    A couple Russians dressed as Irishmen, fighting in an Irish style in black and white... you don’t see that everyday

    The rural Irish used to have huge gang or faction fights, usually at the fair, which happened once a week up until the early 20th century.
    The term 'a donnybrook' is still used in the USA to describe a fight and comes from the donnybrook fair, which sadly doesn't exist anymore.
    The Irish game and national sport of hurling is somewhat like fighting with a shellelagh ( Irish fighting stick or club) but with rules and a ball.
    The shellelagh stick is called after the county Wicklow town of the same name and would sometimes have the head hollowed out and filled with lead to give it a little extra effect.

      Pretty much right but I’d say there’s a fair every now and then over in Donnybrook especially when the rugby’s on in the stadium, but I’m pretty sure hurling is actually older than stick fighting.

      Same here in the rural Newfoundland Irish loop. Around the 1920-1930's. Most of the folks are from west Ireland - Kerry, etc. The fights would happen at the summer parish garden parties and dances. But they were moe into Irish fisti-cuffs. Lots of fighting between the young fellows in the small villages (often over females). Many of the byes signed up to fight the Nazis and Hitler. It was a bigger fight and they were all in on it. Except they got rifles. Those who were rejected went over to Europe with the Forestry UNits and cut trees for the engineers corps. My Dad, a big fighter, used to go rescue his kid brothers who were often fighting.

    I love the Irish sense of fair play; Ulysses, playboy of the western world; never hit a man when he is down; Yeats, Synge, "long Journey into night" - .Les Darcy. So much of what I am comes from another land.

    Отличное видео! Красиво снято и сыграно здорово.
    Правда… немного посмеялся над «самовозобновляемой» папироской. Главный герой в конце видео поднимает почти стлевший окурок, смена кадра, и у героя в зубах уже только что прикуренная папироса. 😉

      What I was told, standing, it comes just above your wrist, other people would measure it with arms outstretched, hold the top and the end should reach your heart (for righties). People would put a brass ring on the end just to stop it wearing down but pouring lead into the top was considered cowardly and sly.

    • @misstinwhistle1
      @misstinwhistle1 5 лет назад +2

      I think a rapier would be too fast, it is very light and one thrust could kill. They have a longer reach. A shillelagh is more civilised though, you don't need to kill or draw blood even.

    • @dansnowberger8823
      @dansnowberger8823 5 лет назад +2

      I'll give the same reply when my buds and I debated a Western Fencer using an Epee/Foil/Saber/Rapier or a Cane using La Canne vs. a Filippino using FMA with a stick or two or machetes. Fencer has the reach, but better hit a vital spot. FMA has the infighting, combos, disarms, etc. So, from my earliest training days, I learned Fencing for the reach and thrusts, and FMA for up close. Mix them!
