  • This is a "real world" look at the methodology of the predominant shillelagh style used by the faction fighters in the old world during the last few centuries. Included are unscripted full speed and force demonstrations of the how's and the why's of this old school style.

We use stick between three and four feet. we are using larger sticks here just to help illustrate the point.

The Irish were at one time conquered by (If I recall correctly) the English, and every single one of them was disarmed. So, Irish men began to carry canes. heavy canes to bypass weapon's control. Golf was invented from these sword control laws for a certain specific type of cane with a large club on the end. Used normally as a cane, as sports equipment for golf, and to beat people on the street if you have to. this is all tradition.

This reminds me a lot of when martial artists practice sword fighting technique with those wooden swords. With weapons laws headed the way they are in the "USSA", I can see stick fighting coming back as a main stream way to fight off thugs especially knife carrying ones! So called "Cane Fu" classes for old folks has risen a LOT where I live!

The only flaw in the renewal of stick fighting will be against whom you will ultimately need to use it. How well dies it work against a thug with what is clearly an illegal gun? An people these days (including the criminal element) may no longer see a cane as "just a cane", because they can also access RUclips.

Very cool. Thanks for putting in the time to create such a great video on this part of Irish culture. In all honesty, I didn't even know Ireland had something like this before I stumbled across your essay.

Well done for keeping our traditions alive. I have only heard of the 'factions' from old men, who heard about them, from old men. while shillelaghs are a common sight still here, thankfully, nobody knows how to use them. ( thanks be to God we don't need them) but well done for the tradition,

Go to the Ballinasloe Fair and you might see a few good fights between the travellers. They still use them a lot.

That is a very unique way of blocking a weapon.

I can only image if someone mixed this fighting style with Shaolin Monk staff fighting style. Dual wielding Irish Guard Stick with Monk long Staff. Epic O_O
