Warrior Monks
Просмотров 2212 года назад
A fun look at some very hard work this past summer. The staff has always represented control in western cultures , and so we use it to train self control at our club. The time for actual warrior monks has past but there is still a lot that can be learned by the systemic practice of self control and form. We couple a serious topic with fun and humour tod try to make it as fun and as memorable as...
Some Constructive HighlightsFrom the Bind.

A few examples from last practice. We have been focusing on the bind all summer and here are a few ways to successfully get out.
Good to see a Shillelagh stick fighting video from you, Mr. Sullivan. I saw the other HEMA you were teaching and was worried that you hung up your shillelagh fighting!
We will be eating tomorrow morning as usual, i might get some pics up.
What are you using for sticks? There appears to be flex to help with safety. Definitely see some longsword guards appearing occasionally.
nice to see you back
WOW!!! You're back!!! Your biggest fan from Switzerland here!!! After first seeing your videos, seven or eight years ago, I got my hands to the nearest broomhandle (in this country they're usually of solid, sturdy ash) that same day, started flourishing the thing, then came across some escrima videos (wmpyr &stuff) sawed the bromhandle into half. started practicing the Sinawali, stole a 6 foot oak handle from the shovel on a road construction site, used this as a bo staff, long story short, I never left home without a stick since then even once. I would never call myself a stickfighter but I practice some serious stickplaysometimes for hours each day and it made my life the exciting adventure it was always meant to be. I had a good reason for this because I lack the good loock and also the money to make pretty girls smile at me so I decided I'm gonna impress the most pretty one with skills, and well it worked, for quite a good time at least but the good thing about skills, compared to, let's say money is this, you don't loose any if she leaves, well you still do a bit of crying, but anyway... Besides it cured me from some serious back pain (the stickplay I mean) I slackened a bit as of lately but not enough to ever let the sticks leave my hands again! Ok. Now I go into my archive and take another look at your old stuff, God I liked those when you were practising in some basement or garage. PS I'm a Swiss a true Native, so to speak but I love the fact that i can claim a little bit of Irish in me from my Great Grand mother! You bet my Daddy told me of the potato famine before I could read or write! All my best wishes to you boys!
We have taken the last seven years to study longsword and the similarity between them and stick. WE have also developed gear that will see us trying to spar with full staff. Keep posted it means a lot to hear people are watching.
Its great but you would have to be in great shape or gas quickly. Practice, practice, practice I guess.
15th century Celtic?
The oldest known shillelagh is about 5000 years old. These modern things look more like hockey-sticks but that is because they made it into a sport. The shillelagh was used for thousands of years in Ireland, the shillelagh walking-stick is a disguised weapon, not a cane that can be used for fighting. Try Francis McCaffrey, he makes them and he knows a lot about the history of shillelaghs.
I think the three types of stick should be called: 'Ow!'. 'Ouch!, and Oh hello mate! I was just on my way past! Have a fine day ☺
Thanks for the informative video.
where are yall based and how would I learn more about you?
Intriguing.
I cut one from scrub oak here in South Georgia and for hardened it for a night. Never sealed it, and never got around to varnishing it like I'd planned on. I carved a socket into the head for a Celtic knot medallion, and have other projects planned for that particular stick. It's never cracked on me, and remains stiff and stout. I figure I'll clear coat it after I carve the runes into the shaft.
Fire hardened*
Happy st paddys day
What is "The Cuticle"? And where can i buy some Black Thorn saplings to plant? Excellent work and very very cool
beautiful
these are literally the only guys on you tube doing anything legit with sticks. aside from the dog brothers.
That is a very unique way of blocking a weapon.
This kinda makes me think of a mix between Eskrima and fencing. The only major difference i see is that they don't get quite as low as eskrima fighters do
You're darn right about the workout you get with the rasp/file. I think that, after my first session using it, weight training was no longer necessary.
One thing I particularly find impressive is JP's fluidity of motion. to me, it's a demonstration of his mastery of the art as you generally only see fluidity like that at the higher levels. he makes it look almost effortless as he flows into the counter-strike of whatever his opponent does... reminds me of my old kick boxing coach.
great info but the music was a bit loud to my ears in the beginning of the video. fyi....
All of the blackthorn is really gorgeous. The grown sticks are where the character is at, for me.
Wish I knew about this when I played hockey!
Beautiful . I think yew would make a good stick , very tough .
So you use your Irish lilt and charm, and while they're still charmed, you clock 'em in the head with the stick.
You don't say how long the sticks are meant to be.
Please, please, please make more of your great Shillelagh tutorials. Long live the Shiner faction! PS. I like the other videos too!
This looks awesome. What are the rules? Are there any shillelagh manuals or are people just adapting sword techniques?
grandmaster JP fantastic video very informative the south African sjambok is good protecter too smart dog you got I always say animals are smarter than some people I have 4wild foxes where I live in UK come eat out my hand I trust them more than most people were I live
is there video of the tourney?
This is excellent! I've never seen such a good example of Irish Stick fighting
1:20 - "Failure to accomplish these three factors will result in you being injured or worse, losing the fight." Dude! Priorities.
Nice job, looks therapeutic and rewarding [not to mention professional].
I was expecting to see hurling from the title
You still sticking it where the sons of Ireland Shine? I'm Game
where is this group located id seriously like to spar with you, ive studied rapier and german long sword and have tried to integrate it into shillelagh stick fighting im curious how i'd actually stand against others.
Damn good advice J.P. ;)
Nice job
I really like your work but I wouldn't call it an art of criminals! Come on, criminals according to who? invading rapists ? They were defending their own with ancient know how. If it's rough around the edges that's just the product of real life poverty and persecution. It was a serious art for men not criminals, monks included. In fact the monks were probably the one's who developed it, alone in those thick green forests with nothing but sticks and wits.
Keep using vasoline but any oil will work. The idea is to slow drying down
I guess the moral of the story is do not feck with an old Irish guy and his Shillelagh.
This is some great fecking shite. I am now gonna start carrying an Irish Walking Stick (aka Shillelagh). I need to start using a cane due too health issues might as well be one that if I had to defend myself it wouldn't break. Just ordered one today.
Great! Pure Gold! Thank you, I enjoy your videos very much.
Just wish every wannabe on RUclips presented instructional videos that were as comprehensive and clear as this one....
awesome .... thanks for all your work at informing us.
Thanks for that. Brill. I've not seen anything like it before.
Good video, but damn man, don't you have a scale that weighs in Real Units-like Pounds and Ounces? I hate the Metric system. I had to resist the urge to cut you off right then and there. Real Men use Imperial Units! .....RVM45
cool logo!
this should be made into an Olympic sport.
+merritt geddes Don't know if serious but I'd prefer something like this to sport fencing.
This was a very funny video! Did you get many people out to the seminar? If I had seen this then I would have attended for sure! It would have helped my social life :)
Excellent!
