  • It is in the village of Shillelagh in South County Wicklow, Ireland, that originates the famous Irish Blackthorn Fighting Stick. The unique qualities of thses sticks were first developed by the Siol Ealaigh people of this region more than 1200 years ago.
The unique properties of blackthorn are ideally suited for its use as fighting sticks. Over the generations numerous different fighting styles were developed using sticks of differing shapes and weights.
The Olde Shillelagh Stick Makers continue the age old craft whereby locally sourced blackthorn, is seasoned and hardened, and fashioned into the finest quality walking sticks, clubs, cudgels and ornamental sticks available.

I've bought two staffs and one cudgel from this gentleman. All of them loaded. Each one is an individual beauty, sturdy as hell and will last longer than I ever will. A guy below is commenting that the price is quite high. Each one of these takes the guts of three years to make and will last your family generations not to mention each one is, simply put, a piece of Irish art. Consider this and then look at the price, suddenly they are excellent value. One of the staff's I bought was a gift for a friend and the other was for me. I take my staff hiking with me every weekend and it is now a reliable friend for life that I would have gladly paid twice for. My friend also never takes a walk without his.

I bought one from Liam about 3 years ago. It is truly a friend, and has served me well. I was able to defend myself against attack while in downtown Pittsburgh at twilight from would be muggers,(for my wallet.) I was able to hold them until police arrived. I never think of it as a weapon. It isn't.
However it's s great to know that if you need a self defense item it is right there at the end of your hand while walking along.

I carry my Blackthorn in my right hand like you, but with the tip forward. A stout whipping motion, either forehand or backstroke, applied to a angry dogs snout, or an aggressive two-legger, will get the job done and drive that angry dog away. It is also useful on the trail to knock foliage out of the way. The small knob on my stick is ideal for leaning on it but has never been used for striking.

Impressive function & heritage. Among honored fighting tools, the true shillelagh has properties difficult to replicate. They hit hard, and blend into daily life nicely for surprise deployment if needed. As walking sticks, there might not be a better style all things considered. Olde Shillelagh has the patience, knowledge and discipline to continue making these for real, whereas some suppliers don't fully dry or properly seal the blackthorn.

I have ordered a few as gifts to the men in the family, each complete with a special inscription near the knob. I suspect they will be used and shown off, cherished, and handed down to other generations.I know I will love my little piece of Ireland, made by a true Irish craftsman. The problem lies here; Upon the death of the recipients, the fight will be about which son gets the stick! As for the proprietors, Liam is very accommodating and very easy to work with.Thank you Liam, you have Made My Day!I will see you when I make the trip!

I rejected a "genuine Irish blackthorn shillelagh" from another source in the US within one half hour of opening the package. The outcome could not have been better because I found Mr. Kealy's shillelagh store on the net. I ordered a walking stick from him, and it immediately impressed me with its quality. It balanced well in the hand, the weight was exactly right and it was quite sturdy. In short, Mr. Kealy brought out the best out of his County Wicklow blackthorn

(post button hit by accident). The fit and finish were no less than elegant with a beautiful root ball and a shaft straight and full of thorn stump character. My wife (being able to compare Mr. Kealy's work woth the disgraced and quickly returned item) called Mr. Kealy's stick by turns gorgeous, beautiful and a work of art. It is just that. The price is modest considering the work and patience he put into it, and the ability to purchase such fine work is very scarce these days.

Have purchased multiple shillelaghs from Liam 'Olde Shillelagh Stick Makers' and they are beautiful, functional pieces. I would offer a few recommendations; if considering purely for a walking stick, stand in the shoes you would be wearing and hold a stick at your side w your arm relaxed with a slight bend at the elbow and where the stick hits your wrist .. this being the approx length you would want. Weight is a bit of a consideration, especially if you're considering training in Irish Batairacht stick fighting. Too heavy and the stick is difficult to maneuver quickly. I've found the 'sweet spot' to be around 325-425 grams. If not, weight is simply a matter of preference and aesthetics. The other consideration is lead loaded or not. I have both but consider the legal implications if you use the stick in self defense and it is lead loaded and how that could influence a judge or jury with regard to your intent. Also not sure about passing a loaded stick thru TSA screening, hence my decision to purchase non loaded.

I have a little question. I looked into the history of the Shillelagh. And it seems that because of british law, is was shortend and therfor converted to a walkingstick. Now my question is, how long was the Shillelagh originally ? Some use the term staff then, but I find references as to how long they were before the britsh interference.

Auto Didact Yes, I am aware of the Scot's Irish roots, and the use of the shillelagh, but at the time of golf's invention, while the kebbie stick was still very much in use, it wasn't technically a shillelagh because it wasn't made of blackthorn, it was pretty much just a shepherd's crook. The Irish can't exactly say they invented the weaponized stick, either.

The stick is made from the taproot, the blackthorn is more of a scrub bush

Harry Williamson .. A more abundant and just as strong type of wood can easily passed off as Blackthorn. . Hawthorn grows everywhere here in UK and if the thorns are thick enough, they can be sanded into knobbles and stained darker, then a once over the stick with black car spray and you would need a psychic to call it fake.. Very dense strong heavy wood and it grows as straight as broomshanks in sheltered areas. Blackthorn can't be beaten but it can be faked..

Jay M .. Legend has it that the original Cudgels were made from oak,.. I once made one from a strong branch of oak and after a few years seasoning it, I thought it felt light compared to Blackthorn. Oak heart wood would be a lot heavier and strong but Blackthorn is still more interesting to look at with the scars buffed up and crimson blemishes in the bark.

I am traveling to Paris this coming month, and I understand that my rights to carry a firearm are left at the east coast of the USA. I will feel a bit light on the right hip, and wondering if I can pick up a stick in Paris, as I might be limping a bit from the lopsidedness of it. My Irish wife, with her waist length red hair flowing and not covered, might be a target for some one who needs to learn a little western values in their journey. Any suggestions?

"might be a target for anyone who needs to learn some western values". Everything you've said is a caucophany of meaningless. You're a bigoted idiot. The fact you're unaware of your own idiocy is the most astounding thing however.
