The "American Dream" is dead....I bought my home in Missouri in 2019 just before Covid hit. My taxes went from $750/year to $3500/year. I pay more for my taxes and insurance then my actual house payment is. The taxation is out of control. Elderly living on social security are having their homes taken from them. Imagine paying 30 years on your home to have it taken by taxes.....We need to put a stop to this.

I was in 8th grade in the 1950s and when our home room teacher proudly proclaimed "We are getting a union," I thought, oh great, this can't be good. I got married in 1972 and the mortgage was $252 a month on our dinky little home we bought in 1975. $12 of that was escrow for the taxes. Now, just the school tax is $1849 and add another $800 for county property tax. So we are close to what the mortgage was before. We are all renters, whether we realize it or not. Fortunately, we decided to wait until we could afford kids before we would have any. Well, I am 76 now, and still waiting. At least I'm not a walking cadaver like the guy in the White House.

Mostly driven in WI by the out of control spending on these $200M schools they build for kids who don't appreciate them. Pole building, AC and heat. Pay the teachers better, dump the huge amount of admins they don't need. And these "kids" that keep voting for these referendums can pay for it themselves. Being in our mid 50's and early 60's we shouldn't have to pay for your little plague carriers school. At least not a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired wood and glass building that cost $10M a year to maintain. Off my soap box...

A lot of people can't plan for increases that big in such a short amount of time. Those who are retired or on fixed incomes, get especially squeezed. I'm in NC and haven't seen much of an increase in the 11 years I've been here. I believe it's coming, though. Renting isn't better, as someone has to pay those taxes and it will just be passed down in the rent. It's no different than "making corporations pay their fair share." That "fair share" isn't paid by corporations, it's paid by the consumers who buy products they need/want from those evil corporations. Sounds good in a stump speech and some people are too ignorant to see the problem.

The freedom of ownership is long gone, but there are still places in the world where you actually own the land/house and property tax is symbolic, such as Poland, Croatia, Israel, Thailand and more.

My house payment went up 200 Xtra a month from my property tax and Property insurance. I am not in Illinois, but I am in Midwest. This is coming from paying for illegal immigrants the G. Funding them so they are pulling it out of our property taxes and the insurance is going up from all the crimes they are committing on property and commercial properties and homes. Insurance companies are paying out the roof on claims. And car insurance went up 50 .00 extra a month again due to hit in runs and stolen vehicles from illegal immigrants. The insurance person told me this is the reason. They are also supposed to start taking more money across the borad from people's pay checks in federal and state taxes. In Illinois the biggest problem is the crazy pension system setup. Problem with it is in 1970 Illinois (Illannoyed) passed a amendment to the state constitution - the pension protection clause. That section reads:
“Membership in any pension or retirement system of the State, any unit of local government or school district, or any agency or instrumentality thereof, shall be an enforceable contractual relationship, the benefits of which shall not be diminished or impaired.” This makes it very difficult to change an unsustainable pension system.
As far as renting, they will ding those property owners and your rent will skyrocket as well.
