Local governments in the US (cities, towns and villages) rely chiefly on property taxes to fund their activities (public education, police, fire protection, etc.). However not all property is taxed: only land, buildings, automobiles and a few other items of "real" or "tangible" property is actually taxed. The kind of property that is UNTAXED in the US is "intangible" property: chiefly that property in the form of stocks and bonds. No level of government taxes that property. As that kind of property is owned chiefly by the richest among us, exempting intangible property from taxation is a gross bias toward the rich in our system: a scandal always and a special scandal in a time of service and employment cutbacks by cities and towns claiming they "have no money."

I've lived in America and Canada. Paid about the same in taxes but get way more for my taxes in Canada. Most Americans hate the government (hate giving them their money even more) because they've never experienced good governance.

This is why the US should elect more progressive politicians, who know how to manage budgets and give us (yes, pur country's initials literally spell out that pronoun) much better tax credits in return for better public education and better public healthcare. but since these are nonexistent, my husband and I are being guided to finance our retirement and healthcare through a diversified investment portfolio

At one time I owned a 1/3 acre of unimproved property in north Idaho that was in an allodium. In other words it was free and clear of being taxed and had been this way since the beginning of time. When the local tax assessor discovered this he put it on the tax rolls. I've always thought about this and wanted to know. The way I see it is. Once your property is payed in full. You shouldnt have to pay out your money to anyone because you rightfully own it. Example: if you go into a clothing store and you buy a pair of Jean's. You buy them payed in full and that's it you dont keep paying for these Jean's every year. So why do we have to do it on what's already ours. Our homes and property. The most expensive thing we own we have to keep paying on them for ever. It's all bullshit

    • @karenmmcthree

Well said, well said property tax is very unconstitutional though.
This is not the plan that our forefathers drafted when they framed the Constitution..
Taxes were for merchants okay and nothing supersedes the Constitution.
Marbury versus Madison is case law where the supreme Court made it implicitly clear that any state law code mandate or policy that went against the Constitution was null and void.
They list us as a corporation so I said I would pay my property taxes conditionally if they could show me where I can send it to contract with these for profit entities known as the state there's no valid contract with my signature so they must own me which they don't so they are operating fraudulently. Selling tax deeds out of thin air is securities fraud and the Constitution secures our rights. We have to rise up!

Frank, that is a really good idea, it would be very much like what I was thinking, a mortgage tax. When a person takes out a mortgage they would have to pay a sales tax on that mortgage. Just think of how much money our country would save if we could get rid of the tax accessors offices. The sales tax offices would take care of this mortgage tax. We would save billions and have, probably, hundred of thousands of people less in our government. Let the tax accessors go out and make an honest living for a change. Property tax is likely one of the most important taxes you pay. It pays for the things that most effect your day to day life. It is based on the size of your property, the value of your home, the more you can afford the tax, the more you pay.

    • @rkba4923
      @rkba4923 5 лет назад +8

Yup and that's inconsistent with equality because none of us should have to pay any more than anyone else for the same government services. However, Americans need to understand that their right to own real property, as with many others, has been STOLEN from them via FRAUD and DECEIT and they canNOT "own" real property in America (Texas may be an exception, not 100% sure). They can only RENT it from the government and that's how the government USURPED our right to own real property and justify charging us taxes/fees for exercise of what was supposed to be a "right". But, there's Supreme Court precedent that says when a law destroys or substantially diminishes a right, it's unconstitutional and, therefore, unlawful and NOT "law" but "color of law." Hmmmmmm??????!!!!!!!

I think when you are retired and living on a fixed income you shouldn't have to pay taxes on your land and your house anymore, you shouldn't have to pay school taxes either. You've paid those taxes for 30 or more years and you should be left alone to enjoy your retirement with dignity. That way Americans won't have to pack up and move to where it's "cheap" to live after taking a lifetime to pay off their home and when your health goes downhill you'll have the money to pay the medical bills or have the money to get good insurance so you don't have any copays or deductibles.

+Joe Monroe We all contribute to varying degrees, we all benefit to varying degrees.
The libertarian take on tax is infantile. We all contribute because societies with healthy levels of social spending... with decent hospitals and schools and roads etc, are better societies than those where everyone has to fend for themselves - at the mercy of sociopathic corporations - who have created all this "anti-tax" propaganda - this framework that libertarians "rebel within". Libertarianism is a self-defeating inside-the-box rebellion.
Fuck "theory". I'm interested in what actually happens... what actually works - and I've been around and seen enough to know from first-hand experience (in multiple countries, across multiple decades), that the people with the most freedom... in actual, real, measurable terms, are people from societies with healthy levels of social spending.
The American healthcare system is a tragedy. It clearly, measurably doesn't work - but nothing can be done about it because corporations have been allowed to buy politicians.

We keep talking about property tax when it is an unconstitutional, Illegal (Extortion) and very discriminatory tax. Why are we so worried about giving aid to refugees in another country when we are taking homes from people who served our country and spent their lives paying for the very best social security, their home ownership.
Property tax is Unconstitutional because it denies our rights to Life ( having a place to live ) Liberty ( the Liberty of property ownership ) and the Pursuit of Happiness ( we spend our whole life paying for the property, raising our children there, bury our pets there, and enjoy making improvements).
Property Tax is Unconstitutional because it is against the Eminent Domain Laws which state that the property must be taken for a public purpose, used for a public purpose, go to the public domain, and that the owner must be justly compensated.
Property Tax is Unconstitutional because it's process denies our rights to Due Process of the Law. The owner has no say on the price of the taxes and when the property is taken away, the final Take Notice on the property clearly states that the owner can attend the hearing, but cannot redeem the property at that time.
Property Tax is Illegal because it fits the exact definition of Extortion; Exactly.
Property Tax is Illegal because it fits the exact definition of Theft.
Property Tax is Discriminatory because it only discriminates against people who are disabled, who lose their jobs, who have excessive medical bills, or farmers who lose their crops.
We the People who built this Country, Paid for their Homes, Fought foreign enemies to keep our land from being taken by them and We the People are the people who are losing our property in favor of giving refugees a place to live. It's not right in any sense. Anyone who signs a Property Tax Notice should be Arrested. Any Governor who supports the Property Tax should be impeached then imprisoned. We own our property, not you. It's our right to own property without being harassed. We the People have the right to secure our futures by the way of property ownership.
Instead, why don't we have an Internet Tax as former Illinois Governor Pat Quinn introduced and passed a bill to do to protect small businesses in Illinois. Big Corporations are not paying sales tax and they are pushing mom and pop businesses out of business.
When we have a system that is against the people, we have a system that is against the United States and Property Tax is against anyone who spends their life, as we were taught, to buy property to make sure that when everything else breaks down, they still have a place to live. Yet our governments spend millions of dollars on High School Football Stadiums and Millions buying and paying for the electric to run Stadium Lighting, which is extremely expensive. For example, the cost of a single night of running football stadium lighting will pay a whole years taxes for the average home owner.
The big cities who had hyper housing price inflation also had hyper Property Tax Inflation pushing hard working citizens out of their homes.
Property Tax is Anti American, Unconstitutional, Illegal, and Discriminatory. It is Wrong.

"Property tax" is a misnomer. A lawful "tax" cannot threaten, encumber, or transfer property. The sole purpose of lawful government being the protection of the property of each individual consisting of their life, liberty and possessions, it cannot be supported by a method that harms property it is to protect. A "property tax" transfers the ownership of the property from the original owner to the state the moment that it is imposed. The "tax" becomes a rent paid from the tenant or renter to the owner.
Most people think the state seizes your property if you can't pay the "property tax," but in reality, the property is seized upon the levy of the "property tax." The new State owner merely evicts the tenant if they cannot pay the rent.
The so-called "property tax" is confiscation of the property of the people by the state and alters the relationship of the people to the state. In the beginning of the USA it was understood that the people owned the property and created the state for the protection of their property. Now the state owns all the property and the people exist to protect the state and its property. The people have become property of the state. Nothing is more evil than the so-called "property tax."
Further, the evil and the scandal of "property tax" is not that it is imposed unequally or only upon some property and that some properties and entities are excused or exempt, but that it is imposed at all on any property whatsoever.

Not only that, but now more cities are adding an "assessment " to already high propery taxes. If they put a new road in front of your home, they add an assessment to your property tax that you are required to pay even if you didn't ask for the road.. It can be a large amount, and with little or no notice.
And unlike regular property tax where you can file for a refund if your income was low enough, assessments are not eligible for any such refund. Even retired or disabled people have to pay them, although they may qualify for a delay in payment, they still have to be paid. I just think it's wrong. It has the potential to tax people out of their homes .

Even worse, when you pay off your property, your tax goes up because you no longer receive exemptions. We dont own our property, we rent it. If a car is purchased brand new and resold 7x, the taxes paid to the government exceed the original value of the car in 10 years. Taxes should only be paid only one time, at time of purchase and no more.

Woah wait a minute. I had to stop at 4:21 when you went into this garbage about not taxing stocks & bonds as being a scandal. I busted my tail working a crappy dead end job for 12 1/2 years. I didn't throw my money away on garbage like new tvs, the latest iphone, a new car new clothes, eating out among other nonsense. I saved up a good chunk of money to start buying stocks so that my money could make money. We are taxed on stocks when we sell them. That's called a realized gain. We shouldn't be taxed on stocks while we are holding them. That would be taxation on an UNREALIZED GAIN and depending on how the market is moving taxation on a stock sustaining an UNREALIZED LOSS. That would be a disaster. Not only rich people buy stocks. There are people like myself who chose to delay gratification instead of being a typical consumer and invest my money instead.
I will say this. Property tax on real estate we pay is a scandal and highway robbery. Every year the appraisal district has an incentive to find properties in neighborhoods that have sold for the most money to use as their metric for jacking up values for everyone else. Then the tax assessor gleefully assesses their levy against homeowners like myself who own their properties free and clear. Sure on the surface it looks nice to see your property go up in value. But what about if I want to continue living in my property? I have to pay and arm and a leg to stay in my own home that I have known for 15 years or face the alternative ordeal of gathering all my stuff-lot's of family heirlooms-and engaging in a logistical nightmare to find somewhere else to live with a lighter tax burden. Usually it entails moving to the boondocks away from civilization. Essentially when our taxes go up we are being taxed on an UNREALIZED gain because until we sell our homes we have no access to that added value. Not to mention in my case I have not updated my home in the entire 15 years I have lived here. Now I can't even afford to update my home because I have to save it all for my property taxes. It's outrageous. But to suggest that owners of stocks should also be taxed on the value of their holdings whether they have an UNREALIZED gain or have shouldered UNREALIZED losses is absolutely absurd.
By the way those much needed services the city provides that our tax dollars pay for are below par to say the least. I've got pot holes all over the place where I live and many of the public schools the bulk of our tax dollars are paying for are underperforming. Not to mention I don't have kids in public schools so its ridiculous I should pay for a crummy school system I don't use.

Being when I did have school aged children there was no way I was going to send them off to be schooled by that evil hearted libral foolishness. That's why I would put such a tax only effective on value above $100K or $250K.
And make it very cheap like 0.5%.
I'm not a fan of taxing unrealized gains either. Dividends a different story that's income. And again, I'm for the first $60K in dividends not to be tax especially for retired peoples... but really the first $60K or $40K in dividends and/or interest shouldn't be taxed. Then begin taxing in brackets as we do ordinary income.
And ordinary income shouldn't begin being taxed on Federal income tax until after the same $40K to $60K.
Payroll taxes all income should be taxed (social security and medicare) as it is now, no deductions. That's going to a specific thing: medical and a pension.
State income tax and sales tax shouldn't be more effectively than 10% to 12% on income $60K and under.
Income brackets on higher incomes including dividends/interest should be taxed the same progressive tax as ordinary income.

Ppl don’t like taxes, but they’re not proposing what the money shouldn’t be spent on or how to raise taxes instead for local govts which don’t take income tax.
City budgets are all public and they have public hearings and town halls to discuss them. I doubt the haters truly participate and figure out where their hard earned $s are going.
Not saying it the local govts don’t have wasteful spending; this happens with any big spending agency. It’s that there needs to be an examination from the other side, not just ‘urrgh mah money, tax bad’

This problem with this video is that it misstates facts. He correctly defines what property taxes are and how they are used. Then he says what happens if you sell the property and buy bonds? If you sell the property then you no longer own the property and are no longer subject to property taxes on it. If you sell the property and used the money to buy another property within the same area you would pay property taxes on the new property.

Its not because you own it. the tax is to cover the cost of government services they provide for that property. Don't you want the police to protect your property? Dont you want your garbage to be picked up or have a place to take it? You're also taking up space that could be divided up for more people or used by the public. Most local government has a property tax because they don't have an income tax to pay for these things. Its just like owning a car. Gas stations don't charge you because you own a car. They charge you because you are buying their gas. Parking lots don't charge you because you own your car. They charge you because you're using their space. What they should be charging property tax for is to fund things that have nothing to do with your property like schools, parks, ect.

J Shysterr If that was the case they should just refuse services to you. But let you keep your home and land if you don't pay the property tax. By the very definition of owning something. Their is no lawful way it can be taken from you. It would be thievery. Also you would not have to pay anyone to keep said property. So by the very definition of owning something home and land ownership does not exist in America.

    • @williampennjr.4448
      @williampennjr.4448 5 лет назад +4

Shane Strickland the problem is that the left has taken over the property tax system to pay for additional things that have nothing to do with your property. Plus there are things you cant opt out of because they are connected to your property like schools and parks. They increase and lower the value of your property. You cant disconnect your property away from how other people feel about it, and your property's value affects other peoples property value. You made this connection when you chose to buy the property. Nobody forced you to buy. If you dont like how much your paying then vote for better leaders, join a home owners association or move.

Thank-You for covering this subject. We must ALL understand that the fraud/scandal applies to ALL taxation. Taxation is a form of servitude that has been unlawfully forced on the people. The United States of America is a Corporation. You as a person/citizen are an officer in that Corporation. As an officer is in any Corporation, you have certain rights, restrictions, and obligations. In the Constitution we are given Rights/Choices, one of those Rights is a Choice of whether we choose to be a part of the Corporation. You are a Man or Woman as a man or woman you have the Right to have have a Right to Life, Liberty, Security, and Freedom through Common or Natural Law, or You have the Right to choose Statutory Law which is determined by Legislation and is often exercised in civil Law.. No by Law or in Law are you forced to pay taxes, have drivers license or permit, vote, or follow any law that is in conflict with the Constitution. No Censorship, No Mandated Pandemic obligations, No discussions regarding gun laws, No Traffic enforcement tickets. I am a man or women operating in accordance with the Constitution and all Rights it provides to me under Natural/common law. I am not a citizen, a statutory person, a tax payer, a worker, a fictitious character, a body corporate, or an officer in a corporation. I am a legal man or women and I operate in my FULL legal capacity.

The government has grown WAY out of control and we've lost all the principles we gained after the revolutionary war. If you think taxation on property is fair then you don't deserve to live in the freedom many men and women have died to preserve. Go somewhere else where your principles are already supported and stop enslaving the rest of us that DO want to live by the Constitution and the freedom it protects.

If I remember correctly this country was founded as a results of a rebellion against double taxation. We have come a long way as in some areas we have evolved into not only double, triple, quadruple and even more multiple taxation. Take for instance the purchase of an automobile. When you buy it new, you pay tax on the full value of the purchase price. When you trade it in and someone buys it as a used car, they pay tax again on a portion of the full value of the purchase price. And when that person trades it in and another person buys it they pay tax on it again, and on and on and on,The same applies to DMV license fees or any form of tangible commodities that can be resold. Correct me if I'm wrong but that seems to be a lot more than double taxation. Small wonder Americans feel that they're being taxed to death.

When someone has their house paid off and stands to get removed from their property for not paying a tax on it is nothing more of less than that. I dont understand how people stand for this at all.

The worst offenders, where I live in Pennsylvania, are the school districts. School boards have the power to tax and can do so without oversight. I pay about $700 a year to my town and county, that's total. I pay $2,500 a year for the school system. Recently, it was reported that the school board voted to raise taxes to give school employees a raise. I haven't seen a raise.
Maybe the schools should stop buying new computers every year and get back to teaching reading, writing, arithmetic, history and, very importantly, civics. High schools don't need courses in robotics, law, or psychology. Not when you are hard pressed to find a teen who can make change without a calculator.

Spartaculus Jones "Are you saying that we should get rid of unemployment benefits, social security, Medicaid and Medicare?"
No, not at all. I would eliminate all monopolies and all force used to prop them up. No person or group has a right to collect their living at the end of a gun. There is nothing wrong with selling or buying unemployment insurance, medical, catastrophic care, old age care and etc. I think these are valuable worthwhile products. The problem is certain people use coercion to force you to pay for their provision of these products. I am for Liberty. If you want to buy into unemployment from government employee's, fine. If another product is available at lower cost or with more benefits, you should have every right to choose it as well. I am for Liberty, choice. No person has a right to use a gun to monopolize the services they provide. Not the baker, not the unemployment insurance seller, not the health insurance seller - nobody. No special persons. No royalty. No person who can pretend and act committed under protection of armed forces any morally superior to you doing the same act.
"And do you despise people who are unemployed"
Why would I even consider such a weird hate. Are these feelings you have had?
"and desperately job hunt to no avail?"
Who hasn't been unemployed? It feels like shit. It's a constant drain on one's self worth and courage. Sucks.
It is I who argues for a cessation of the use of force and guns against people to obtain services and resources. Yet, you wonder if "hate" emanates from me? I am not defending any use of force against any peaceful person. Such use of force is vile and evil. I wish to interact with others through voluntary cooperation. Of course, there will always be criminals, psychopaths, murderers, molesters, robbers and various predators of their ilk who feel their needs and desires are a claim on the life and property of others. I am for Liberty as the only alternative to slavery.

Does the laborer not own himself? Is he not his own property" Does he not invest in his own skills. Does ne not preserve his own capacity to undertake his profession? Is he vile and evil because he claims to own himself and claims a right to sell his time and labor to another?
In your world, a machine must coalesce out of the vapor. The man who labored to produce the machine or it's components the vile devils of property accumulation. The machine has no value, it is evil.
What you question is a man kinds right to sell it's labor (or corn or metal or anything) for compensation for the individuals own purposes. You argue for slavery. The men of stolen accomplishment cannot rule the world without death and mass graves. You and yours have killed 100 million attempting to steal the accomplishments of others and turn them to your own purposes. The men of stolen accomplishment are the sure path to poverty. here is the funny thing. COMMERCIAL BANKS CREATE OUT OF THIN MOST OF THE MONEY THAT WE USE. They do this by taking a promissory note and turn it into expendable money. So when the promissory note is paid off the money it created will disappear. This means that the only money we have are these promissory notes which are debt. The banks have hidden this debt-money from the general public. Only the very few that actually look realize what is really going on. If every knew exactly how banks operate there may be enough momentum to stop this debt-money system. The constitution never says that promissory notes can be money. Money is only as per article 1, section 8, clause 5. So these banks are siphoning most of the laborer's work, and then steps in the government who is there to take from the crumbs left behind. The government not only want to take some of the crumbs but they are bought to keep people from learning about where their money comes from. The banks buy all these schools and politicians to keep people in perpetual ignorance. Even in colleges they misinform students by teaching them a concept called fractional reserve lending. Banks do not lend from deposits. So the bankers and the government squeeze the people.

When I first saw the title of this video I thought there was going to be a discussion about how the property tax itself was a scandal.
When people buy property it is referred to as “real estate” and that is usury not ownership. If you really owned your property then there would be no tax. The scandal is you aren‘t holding true title to your property and you don’t own it, only paying for all the liabilities and you’re using it.
The country wasn’t founded on property tax. In fact, go read about Shay’s rebellion and you’ll see the Founding Father decided not to have a property tax and instead went to an alcohol tax which caused Shay’s Rebellion.
The idea that someone actually made a video talking about property tax and then converted to a rant about stocks and investments not being taxed… are you kidding me?!!! I can’t believe I wasted 5 minutes of my life watching this nonsense!
Stocks and bonds are already taxed! Just because it isn‘t called property tax and the cities aren’t taxing it, who cares, they’re taxed?
The whole property tax issue is the fraud! Property tax is a relatively new tax in the United States. Government began thinking about it in the 1890s. Yet when my parents were growing up through the depression they didn’t have property tax.
We need to own our land and get rid of the property tax altogether!

as he said it was done once before. If you look at Trumps tax proposal it would lower taxes for the rich and his marginal rate would be something like 3 percent. Lowering taxes has never done much for the economy. While I am sure the rich complained about it at the time from the 1940's until about the time Nixon became president the marginal tax rate was 95 per cent for the richest people in the country. Granted we needed the money to pay for the war effort and for some point after. Of course we got involved in the Korean War and then Viet Nam. Those war efforts had to be paid for. And even with those two wars, the economy was pretty good here. Not many people had to work 2 or 3 jobs. It wasn't so necessary for women to have to work. Of course in those days, it was probably hard for a woman to become an attorney. Sandra Day O'Connor couldn't get a job at a law firm when she graduated. My mother didn't work. We were by no means rich, but we had a nice home, two cars, were sent to college when you didn't have to take out a big loan. I don't know why some people here are bitching about taxes. The real reason to bitch is because per centage wise the rich pay so much less and sometimes nothing. Most people are not heavily invested in stocks and bonds and if you do own any it is probably a few shares. Look at social security. I wonder how many people commenting here make 118,000 dollars. Once you reach that point you don't have to pay anything in. Hardly fair. Finally read David Cay Johnston's books, Perfectly Legal, Fine Print and Free Lunch. You might think a little differently.

The problem with (most) property taxation is that it doesn't take into account the ability to pay. When you're young and earning, you can budget yearly property tax costs into your buying decisions. But as you get older and income drops, the property tax calculation (often) doesn't take that into account. Result: old people having to sell their life-long home. Much as people complain about California property tax system - it is remarkably fair for long term home owners.

3 things certain in life :
    1. Death
    2. Taxes: Federal/State/Sales/Property/Estate taxes, And if you die before you can claim them, they keep all your Medicare and your Social Security taxes too
    3. Insurance premiums/co-pays/deductibles until you reach your out of pocket maximum

The real scandal is the taxes that ARE collected. It was only a little over 100 years ago when there was NO federal income tax, In 1913 it was initiated and it was ONE PERCENT. Now we have 10, 20, 30% PLUS medicare plus medicaid plus social security plus the employers portion of social security. Add up all the fed, state, and local taxes and in many cases half or more of the money people earn with their labor is taxed. And guess what??? ITS NOT ENOUGH. These drunken sailors demand more. They are even willing to go into debt on your behalf. Now there's your SCANDAL.

I never thought of stocks and bonds as "property" but it is! You can touch stocks and bonds. It's tangible. Learning something new everytime I hear Prof. Wolff speak.

I don't want intangible assets to be taxed. Your Social Security isn't taxed. I want the property taxes to be reduced.

You are easy to control if you have no money.
