I Took a Chinese Robotaxi and This Happened...

  • No that isn't clickbait, literally nothing happened. Aside from the robot passing me by at the start.
A couple months back I booked a robotaxi to get me across Nanshan District in Shenzhen China. It took awhile for the robot to get there, and then we rode around town a bit, and then I got out at my destination. Probably the most uneventful taxi ride I've ever had in China. Pretty impressive stuff. And it cost me nothing.

These AI cars are still being tested on a small scale, so there will be human drivers sitting there to prevent accidents. In several other small cities in China with relatively uncomplicated traffic, these AI cars have been completely unmanned.

Maybe where you were standing is considered “bus zone” so the robot went over a bit to make sure it wont block buses potentially behind it to go into the station

interesting to see robotaxi in China. I have never taken Waymo in San Francisco, but have seen few. For Waymo, there is no human on the front seat at all. And it drives pretty aggressively. Changes lane quite often, like what I would do. I actually followed them few times and drove on its side to take a look. It is quite impressive. Also, there is no camera inside of Waymo. Local newspaper has reported that in few occation, waymo has to call police to check on the people in the car, because there is no camera. In all cases, it is because passenger was sleeping.
I was in Shanghai in March/April. It was very difficult to get taxi. Not sure what is happening in ShenZhen.
    Cheer. Have fun in China.

cool video, I've seen videos of Waymo, the exterior of the Jaguar they used is quite weird as there are huge sensors all over the car which made it a real "robo-car", this HongQi looks more subtle like a regular car but it seemed the Ai is playing is more safe and seemed less accurate on the pick up spot lol I guess both need some work to be done...

If the worst thing that happens is it doesn't pick you up or drop you off at the exact spot (say, within 100 years on the correct street), that's good compared to how this can go in an Uber for example. And Uber is very tightly geofenced in only a handful of cities.

I think theres a balance in everything. For the disabled and really old people, driverless cars could help them tremendously. I have very often encountered very old drivers here and it’s painful to watch. Way below traffic speed on highways, dangerous driving behaviours because they get scared more easily and their response time is slower. Robo cars are there to help people who have problems driving. It enables them, and make the roads safer for the others.
