  • Is the ONVO L60 actually gonna be the one car that can finally dethrone the king of EV, the Tesla Model Y? What challenges does it face? Is Robert Ford actually a Coward? The world may never know... or they may know sometime around September this year.

    Greetings from Norway, the EV capitol of the world.
    Bying an EV with a fixed battery is stupid IMO. It is the EVs acihlles heel.
    Crossing fingers that more auto manufactors will make a deal with Nio,on their battery swap system.

    Great video! Thanks! I guess for me it always comes down to the fact that both Nio+Onvo are the only choices that offer battery swapping. I believe as time goes on more and more people will see all the benefits a swappable platform brings. As of today, there are still many people in China that don't know about NIO or what a swap station is. I think we are still just at the very beginning of a massive battery swap adoption S curve. When shopping for an electric vehicle instead of thinking swapping versus charging, people will realize only Onvo/NIO can do both! And thats what will win at the end of the day. Thanks Eric! Cheers from Canada 😎

    You asked so here are the shortcomings of the vlog. First, Chinese EV buyers are even more sober, informed and technically focused than you allow. It is not just a broader and deeper range of features that is encouraging Chinese EV buyers to look beyond Tesla. It is the technical obsolescence of Tesla's Model Y and 3 or contrariwise the future proof nature of the best Chinese EVs that is compelling Chinese EV buyers to look at home grown options. So, what technical traits future proof an EV? 800/900V electric architecture is essential - there is no genuinely 'fast charging' without it. Similarly, the EV battery must be capable of 4C charging (at a minimum) if really fast charging is to be achieved. Finally, BaaS/Battery Swapping should be supported in order to guard against long term battery issues - that is the best way to avoid precipitous depreciation. You forgot to mention those things. Even two out of three of those traits is a good thing. That is why Geely:Zeekr/Ji Yue/Volvo/Polestar, Nio:Onvo, GAC:AION, Xiaomi, Changan:Avatr/Zhuge/Deepal, SAIC:IM Motors/MG and Chery:Exeed all look like excellent choices today. Please note, though, it is not only Tesla that has lost momentum in the EV market in China - so too has BYD! Yes, BYD's shipment volumes continue to grow quickly but more due to BYD's PHEVs (the PHEVs are a popular compromise between the old ICE era and the gathering EV wave) than any notable sought after technical characteristics of its EVs.
    Second, the argument you made about the diminished relevance of BaaS in the lower cost EV market is deeply confused. There is nothing forcing a buyer of a Onvo EV, say, to avail themselves of the BaaS battery rental option. The vehicle can be bought complete with a battery included and it remains inexpensive if that is what an Onvo buyer wants. And, if the buyer opts to enter a BaaS rental agreement the initial purchase price of the EV, it should be noted, is reduced. So, there is that. Of course, if a buyer goes the BaaS route expenditure on the vehicle will increase over the long term but if peace of mind is what a buyer wants then BaaS will provide it.

      Focus was Tesla model y because that’s what they focused on. Obviously buyers can purchase without BaaS, the point is that NIO has claimed at various times that about 90% of buyers opt for BaaS… I’m betting that BaaS is a harder sell as you move down market, if you disagree that’s fine but I don’t get the argument, unless it’s “people are terrible at making financial decisions and buy things that are out of their budget too often.” If that’s the case, then I agree.

      @@Eric_Garrison Look, I've hardly got an axe to grind here. But, when you grant that "obviously buyers can purchase without BaaS" that is a big deal. If, when you think of NIO, you get taken aback by the importance of BaaS to NIO then I would say, if BaaS doesn't interest you then think about what does. Now, you assert that BaaS will be a less popular option for lower priced vehicles. I don't know whether people will act as you suggest but I'm pretty sure that whatever transpires in that regard the operative determinants of whether there are lots of buyers for the Onvo L60 (the vehicle you discussed at length) will include the factors I emphasised in my earlier comment. Some people will want the BaaS option, some won't. I'm happy to wait and see what the sales data shows and I care very little about what the balance between BaaS and non-BaaS vehicles might be.
      To recount the obvious, for EV buyers unconcerned about BaaS, NIO BaaS capable vehicles will compete with other vehicles (whether they too are BaaS capable or not) without BaaS ever becoming a matter of concern. In that situation, Onvo will stand or fall on its non-BaaS based merits. Lucky for us, the L60 has plenty of those.

    Interesting thought on the total cost of an ONVO with bass included…for low budget minded consumers.

    You think the number for BaaS can be intimidating? Could be if you're not really informed as a customer, and if NIO or ONVO doesn't push for competitive pricing options. Maybe they should push the association with NIO so there is quality insurance. Like a Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, and Lexus, could help. Like a resort with different room options, just larger price span but quality insurance

  • @Fluxogasm
    @Fluxogasm 3 месяца назад +1

    I think your last point is very valid, and will likely be true. That’s the beauty of BaaS though right, it gives you the extra privilege of choice. Some will want it, some won’t, if they don’t, it gives the NIO products a more premium brand and image.

    • @Eric_Garrison
      @Eric_Garrison  3 месяца назад

      Definitely. I just think it’s a harder sell the further downmarket they go. If firefly sub brand also offers it that’ll really be pushing it… curious to see if eventually they share numbers. They’ve said before like 90% of NIO buyers choose baas.

      If they don't want pay BAAS, can't they buy an ONVO with the battery like they can with a NIO, buying the battery with the car will be less expensive if you keep the car for a long time.

      @@Eric_Garrison I agree that BaaS could cause a problem for middle income house hold only if it's above 700RMB, what if they offer BaaS around 300 to 400 RMB and only deduct 3~40,000RMB instead of 50,000RMB? Can't they be flexible depending on where they choose to play?

    13:20 ONVO with BaaS option should cost less for the customer choosing ONVO without the BaaS option. Here customer is not buying the battery he is not going to own it. Therefore Nio should not add this cost to the price of the car. That way even the 1000RMB per month rental for the battery would make perfect sense for the customer. Let us see how stupid or intelligent people are at the strategy dept of ONVO/NIO. It will be interesting to see the pricing strategy by NIO.
