350Z vs 370Z: Which One is Actually Better?

  • Nissan initially came to the US market under the name Datsun for fear of failure. With that Datsun name they brought the 240Z; since then they have been a top competitor in the sports car market. The Z family has changed a bunch over the years, but there are still some key factors that make them all related. Low roofline, squished trunk, and a long hood are features that every single Z has.
What about the most recent Zs? The 350Z and 370Z were incredibly successful sports cars, but which one is actually better?

For anyone watching this in 2019, this video does have some misinformation (always remember to double or triple check info sources on the internet), mistakes, and basically “meh” content. It was one of our first videos and we made a lot of mistakes. Shooting and editing the video was also outside my hands and we’ve learned a lot since this was shot.
Nonetheless, let’s hear which one you would pick! 350Z or 370Z?

About a month ago I rode with a friend of mine in his 370z which is brand new. When we headed home he let me drive back. I have a 2004 350z and I was anxious to compare them. I drove about 40 miles on I-75 and another 20 in traffic. The first thing I noticed was both cars drove the same. The steering was tight and gave me the feeling I was always in control of the car. My 350z gives me the same feeling of control and is much older. I could sense a little more hp but just slightly. Both cars are stock with no mods. It is a testament to Nissan on how well made the Z cars are when you can drive 2 cars that are 14 years apart and they both drive the same

Its more comfortable, feels way more upscale, and feels a lot faster than the DE. Where the 350 wins is the sound the DE made and the steering was nice and heavier. I've owned a '91 300 ZX, a 2006 350Z, and a 2011 370Z, and the 370Z was by far the best car I've ever owned. It had beautiful styling, was very fast, and fun to drive. I traded it for a Cadillac ELR which is an electrical hybrid and very luxurious and very stylish car, but have since moved into a condo with a communal garage and assigned spaces so I no longer have an outlet to plug it in. I want to go back to a 370Z, but they are overpriced right now so I am playing the waiting game. I also found an outlet a few spaces down which I can plug into as long as the HOA does not notice, so with the high price of gas I can run on electric so I am in no rush.

I bought 370z convertible and enjoyed every ride till the convertible top stopped working (common problem with roadster 370z’s). Everything is better on 370z. Exterior design, interior is miles better, 370z is faster and just overall more thought out vehicle in my opinion. Both cars are nice, but I’ll take 370z over 350z any day after experiencing both.

but the handling is not quite as quick as the older Z. As for the 370Z, it is notably quicker then a 350Z. I like the 370Z and that
rev matching thing is pretty nice with a manual. What amazes me is how quick the Z is compared to many much more powerful cars.
I could see this if the car was some kind of weak, super light vehicle that was just designed with 0-60 times like most American muscle, but the
Z is very stiff and handles better then most cars out there while still being very quick in a 0-60 romp. I have driven both the Camaro and the Mustang and
the Mustang is better then the Camaro, but both do not have the balance and feel of the Z. The Z is just plain a better designed and built car.
The only thing the domestics have over the Z is brute power. But, brute power is no substitute for true balanced performance. The Japanese got
it right while the Americans seem to be floundering in the 60's still. I do also a 1990 Mustang 5.0L notch back and I like that car for what it is. As for
newer Mustangs? They are just too big and fat for my taste. Too much engine for the abilities of the car and it's suspension. Probably why
so many end up being wrecked.

Saying a 350Z is better for someone of your age or means is no different than saying a 2010 Mustang is better than a 2017 Mustang, i.e. - you're basing this on price alone.
Also, the Z is an honest-to-God sports car and the Mustang isn't, so that comparison is apples to oranges.

Appreciated greatly! I have racked my mind of what to get (right now I have an Australian Falcon XR6). I have toyed with the idea of an Audi TT(hmm not a two seater like the grille but not alot else) The Peugeot RCZ ( hmmm laughable at best) And the 350Z HR which I love (especially the bonnet bulge which emulates the original 240Z) I cant help but think though that a 2017 370Z in black is for me...Those arches, the stock 19 inch rays, the symmetry (twin exhaust, V6 etc) I've owned about 9 Nissans in my life including two Z32 TT's and consider myself a Nissan man. I am an owner of a '05 350Z... personally, I don't care for the 370 mainly because, of the smaller body on the 370 and, the tire fenders don't have the same flare as the 350. Repositioning the third tail light from a higher position (for safety) was a bad idea. The vehicle is already a low profile car. My opinion, this makes it harder to see from behind. As you stated, there are much more mods you can do to the 350 than the 370.

Ive own all 3 z’s. DE,HR, n nismo VHR. Out of all 3 i preffer the vhr the motor for my taste is a heavy duty 3.7 motor that can put easy power down. I havent had any problems with my vhr at all. The only problem i have hated in the vhr 370 are the oem oil coolers once you change those you got a heavy duty bullet proof motor with bullet proof tranny and the o2 sensors they go bad quick . On the other hand ive had a DE not very much liked, Lots of oil leaks. Had to get brand new oil pans left and right. Had to spend alot of money on 5qt oil. Bad suspension. Lets just say ive spent over 12k in total on my 350z de in 3 years. Cam shaft sensors were bad as well. Its a fun car to drive until problems start happening, and best believe they happen when you least expect it. Motor had 80k miles on it. Owned a 350z hr as well for 2 years tearible valve gasket i have went thru about 4 sets of felpro valve covers. Over all it was a great car but i dont regret selling. Not many issues with the hr it was solid but for my prefference i can not say it was better then my nismo vhr. Dont comment back saying stupid shi. Cuz ive own zs for multiple years n till this day i still do. Vhr all the way

had an 04’ touring roadster 350z 6-speed. Stock except for a hurst short throw and the possible exception of an upgraded clutch (as the pedal was incredibly hard to push down. Like almost lift you out of the seat tough). Since I bought it used from a car lot (traded a low mile tastefully modded 6-speed C5 FRC Corvette in showroom condition like a dummy; even gave several thousand dollar boot. Regret that to this day. I was young what can I say) I had no way of knowing. It had ~60k miles on it when I got it.
Anyway, I kept it for 6 years or so as a daily driver. I always keep 2-3 vehicles total (usually an SUV, truck, or sedan. But always a sports car) to switch between, but the Z was my main ride. It had over 250,000 miles when I traded it for a BMW.
In that entire time I had hardly a single problem from it. I once had an accessory belt break (quick, easy and inexpensive fix) and it got stuck in 3rd gear twice (neither time was I in the car so I suspect bad shifting of some sort to be at fault. Luckily I have a friend who used to be a Nissan service tech and did the work for cheap. The oil for the manual trannies in 350Z’s is SUPER rare and $100’s of dollars. He just happened to have some of that too. The trans had to be dropped for the fix. In both cases the driving party paid for the fix.) Also the tonneau top developed a 4” tear near the glass rear window, and the folding mechanism would sometimes need a little help raising/lowering the convertible top. That’s it.
It still ran just as good with 250,000 miles as it did when I got it; no squeaks/rattles or warning lights. To be fair, other Z cars I’ve driven didn’t fare so well, even with lesser mileage. Matter fact, every car I’ve owned has stayed “tight”, no matter the mileage or abuse. I am picky about certain things, and even when driving hard, I put effort in to not harm the drivetrain (be accurate when rev-matching, keep an eye on oil temp/level, warm engine up before revving above ~3k, try to vary rpm as much as possible on long highway drives by altering speed by 15 mph or so or going from 5th to 6th, don’t make a habit of red-lining (getting within 500 rpm was better anyway as power dropped off and you stayed in the sweet part of the power band after the shift), don’t overheat the brakes/clutch. When casually accelerating, I would start in 1st up to say 5-7 mph, quickly hit 2nd and go up to 15-25, shift straight to 4th (skipping 3rd). Time it out so a rev match isn’t required; it will slide into gear. Then up to 35-45; 4th to 6th in the same way.
The reason for this was to prevent drivetrain wear and maximize gas mileage. Maximum mileage occurs at the lowest rpm possible (without lugging) in as high a gear as allowed, with *near full throttle (3/4 or maybe 7/8ths). This is because at full throttle your computer will interpret your intention to go fast and will alter mapping/fuel ratios etc., so you want to get as close to this as possible without invoking the aggressive programming.
6th gear is good all the way down as low as 25 or so, all the way up to at least 163-165 - where the governor kicked in on mine. It really didn’t feel like it had more than 3-5 more mph in it anyway on a flat surface. Plus it wasn’t stable enough to inspire confidence above 140 IMO. 160+ was white-knuckle territory on a two lane- 175 was another day in the office in my corvettes, and there was still another gear left.) The nervousness could have been due in part to my all-season tires with 45 sidewalls, or maybe the convertibles aerodynamics weren’t ideal. Or the less than rigid frame, high center of gravity, quick steering, quick rebound from the shocks, brakes that weren’t very strong and would temporarily warp from heat pretty quickly when used at high speeds, causing a disturbing shimmy. Or maybe those things are just normal at high speed, and I am just lucky to have experienced great high speed cars. (I have video proof of 210-212, have driven 200+ at least a dozen times (all in C5 Corvettes) and 180+ too many times to count (In a few different cars, both driving and as a passenger. Off the top of my head there was an 04’ Mustang Cobra with 650+ rwhp, 06’ Pontiac GTO that pulled 11.1 on street tires, a Porsche 911 (997) C4 modded (passenger), C6 Lingenfelter Corvette (passenger, same guy who owned the 911), BMW M5 (E60 with the V-10, speed limiter removed. Was still pulling hard at 185, stock except for exhaust, chip, and Dinan airbox/filter).
Keep in mind my Z was a roadster (convertible). These had slightly shorter gearing to make up for the acceleration loss due to the extra weight of the electronics/motors/structure for the top, along with additional chassis bracing for chassis rigidity. (This likely made it easier to lug around in higher gears). It did pass the infamous convertible “pinch test” at least.
      At time of trade:
All electronics worked. The seams in the heated leather seats had loosened in the same spot (about 6” in the middle of the seam that ran from the left to the right bolster on the bottom cushion; there were no rips in the leather anywhere) on both front seats exposing the white foam. The seat warmers still worked on all 3 settings.
      Here was my upkeep schedule:
•oil changes every 3k-5k miles (much of my driving was highway so 3k was overkill. I would check the oil level and color every so often). All fluids checked along with windshield wipers and air filter (replaced if needed), tire pressure checked, washer fluid etc. every oil change. Sometimes added Lucas to the oil and a specific treatment to the gas every so often.
•tires (would occasionally let them get pretty bad before replacing)
•battery (would wait until the current one would no longer start the car)
      •brake pads
•brake rotors (either turn rotors or replace)
•thorough hand wash 1-2 times per week. Every 2 or 3 months I would fully detail it. Here is an overview of my routine I highly recommend to anyone wanting to maintain their paint quality:
Wet entire car down (windows up!). Mix 1-2 cups purple power w/ 1-2 gallons of water in bucket (ppb). Put high quality auto detergent w/ water in another bucket (acb). Another bucket with just water (wb). Spray diluted (1 part pp, 2-3 parts water)purple power from spray bottle onto front bumper, side mirrors, side skirts, bottom rear quarter panels, rear bumper, windshield (anywhere bugs or grime build up). Take a netted foam pad dipped in ppb, scrub that junk off and rinse before it dries.
Wheel acid, tires scrubbed, leather/interior plastic conditioned, carpet cleaned, top cleaned/occasionally conditioned, metals polished, etc.
•93 octane gas (although I would have to run 87 or 89 from time to time if I couldn’t find premium). Would go out of my way to run non-ethanol gas as much as I could (maybe 25% of the time).
•2 major services (spark plugs, valve adjustment, air filters, belts, alignment, radiator flush, etc).
The car was wrecked 3 times. Twice by friends:
•one was pretty minor; hit a small animal, replaced front bumper
•one major; $6000 in work, not counting replacing the transmission out of pocket that insurance wouldn’t cover (don’t ask me how that happened). He was drunk driving on the interstate in the rain and a car wiped out in front of him so he swerved in to a bank to avoid it (supposedly).
•I hit a deer at ~30 mph. Replaced headlight (for anyone interested, replacement headlights for a 350Z is $300/light for halogen, $1500-3000 per light for HID. I had HIDs, switched to halogen to save money. Later realized the only difference was a 2 prong plug for halogen and 3 prong HID. Aside from that, a $100 ballast and bulb off of eBay and your in business.)
Dented hood, front passenger quarter panel, and passenger door. $3500 in damage (fixed for about half of that).
Out of those 6 years and 200,000 miles, many of which were driven pretty hard (I am quite talented behind the wheel, often drifted at 65+mph, redlined often, brake hard and late into corners while heel/toe downshifting, clip the apex and power slide out. Would see the ~165 mph fuel cutoff pretty often. I live in a rural, hilly area with few cops and plenty of great curvy driving roads with smooth pavement; I definitely took advantage of this (in the event of meeting a boy in blue I’d wish him luck and hit the closest county... hypothetically. This was during the Crown Vic days). Let pretty much anybody that wanted to drive it (one friend took off in it for almost 2 months). I would literally leave the keys in it at my house in case someone wanted to borrow it. In other words, it had the sh*t ran out of it, although mostly in a loving manner. 350Z’s are tough cars made to last.
It didn’t have have power of my Corvettes, or agility of my Porsche, but was somewhere in between and was enjoyable in its own way. I imagine with a little suspension work, a hardtop model with some chassis bracing, Brembos, lighter wheels+wider/stickier tires, and 50-100 more horsepower, they would be close to perfect. Especially if you could remove a couple hundred pounds from one. (Remove A/C compressor, power steering pump, air bags, replace heavy seats w/ recaros, remove sound deadening (optional), remove spare tire/jack, remove cats, add 1/2”-5/8” spacer to the intake manifold to help all cylinders breathe, replace all rubber bushings with metal, get a good LSD (some came with one) with short ratios, underdrive pulleys, oil cooler, transmission cooler, 160 thermostat, electric fan, customize aero underneath of car for less lift at speed, maybe add front/rear spoiler, short throw shifter, raise compression, stronger valve springs, raise rev limit 500 rpm, port/polish intake manifold, exhaust headers (high flow cats/test pipes), CAI, larger fuel injectors,
