- The Howdy Doody Show was one of the first and by far the most popular children's television shows in the 1950's and a reflection of the wonder, technical fascination and business realities associated with early television. www.millcreekent.com

I googled Howdy Doody for a piece I was writing about when I was on the show in 1951 and discovered, to my dismay, that Howdy was a puppet. I never expected that the first piece I would open was the one I was on. I'm the fifth little girl they pan over in the first row, wearing a plaid dress with a white lace collar, and short dark hair.
He was a marionette, not a puppet. I loved his show.
You were so pretty 🙂
You know Susan, you really weren't all that enthusiastic to sing the "Howdy Doody Time" song. You're kind of just sitting there with a facial expression which says "What the Hell am I still doing here?" I guess you were somewhat bewildered to learn that not only was Howdy a cheap marionette, but his voice was that of Buffalo Bob Smith sitting with all the children in the Peanut Gallery. This was probably your first "this is bullshit" moment in your life. After over 70 years, I hope you have been able to recover.
it's always cool to find people that were involved with these old shows on RUclips and hear their stories! thanks for commenting Susan :)
Pretty cool!
This was a mistake watching this at 1am...
i just made the same mistake
i'm watching it at 1am, i'm craving some rice krispies right now
found it at 5 in the morning. im doing intermittent fasting so no rice crisps
ANY time is Howdy Doody time ... or, at least ... ruclips.net/video/DIslhp9vqqw/видео.html

All the children in my neighborhood (including me) would watch this show every day at a neighbor's house; they were the only house which had TV.
I loved Howdy Doody as a kid. I was born in1955 & there wasn't a lot to choose from as the medium was just starting to branch out.
my twin brother and I were born in 1947. Our younger brother in 1952. Mom told Dad to buy a TV to help keep us occupied. And it worked. And you are correct, not much to watch "back then".
I love how people are reacting like this is the creepiest thing. It's early low-budget TV with one of the least scary marionettes of all time (seriously, Google some of the others. I'd hate for those folks ever to stumble onto an episode of Pee Wee's Playhouse.A lot of those kids in-studio are so genuinely excited to be there.
Man this was 1954 what do u expect..but its beautiful..i Like old film and old show
Pee wee is a god
This is the inspiration for woody’s roundup in toy story 2
That's the Reason why I'm Here. And "Cowboy Crunchies" the Cereal that Created and Sponsored Woody's Roundup was a Parody of Rice Krispies (The Sponsor of Howdy Doody).
Woody's Roundup also inspires another puppet western show called Four Feather Falls
i was on this clip! if you stop this at 0:46 I am the kid back row neck tie.
Did you all rehearse the song beforehand?
For real?
Really????
That pretty kool
Wow you myst be popular
I don't know why, but I suspect this show might've had some subtle product placement.
BTW does anyone else have a strange craving for rice crispies?
lo nope. Not after this ad.
rc0ll1 the show itself is supposed to contain ads in it it was early television and Kellogg’s owned the rights of Howdy Doody and there broadcasting content
It's 2020 and Rick Krispies is still part of my cereal
We used to put our ears to the cereal and listen to the snap crackle and pop. Definitely not my favorite cereal. The flavor was boring. You had to work at getting into it.
I only know this from Back To The Future III
me too. haha
Bro why do think I'm here
What is the point of this channel same typing this while watching it 😅😅😂😂
Mr. Hedgehog same haha
Mr. Hedgehog and Indiana Jones
My grandma told me she would watch this show when she was little
HOWDY DOODY TIME!
Date: Sunday, November 13, 1955, 7:01 a.m.
Last night's time travel experiment was apparently a complete success. Lightning struck the clock tower at 10:04 p.m. sending the necessary 1.21 gigawatts into the time vehicle, which vanished in a flash of light leaving a pair of fire trails behind.
I assumed Marty and the time vehicle were transported forward through time to the year 1985.

Came here from "Pogo".. the man who was in my game room (Pop-it) was Howdy Doody's Grandson!! Lives in Florida and is 58 yrs. old. I remember in the late '50's my cousin had a Howdy Doody Doll .. and I was soooo jealious!!! He had a room full of toys while my brother and I hardly had 3 each. I remember feeling like I was walking into a toy store.. and yet afraid to touch anything.
Whoa. Old school TV shows had one heck of an awesome advertisements
boy don't that bring back the "good old" days
Yes, the sponsors WERE an integral part of the show, 'RJ'. There was such a "waiting list" of them, they had to be "rotated" (let's say, Monday, Kellogg's is the day's sponsor; Tuesday, Mars Candy [3 Musketeers]; Wednesday, Colgate-Palmolive [Colgate Dental Cream]; Thursday, Welch's Grape Juice; Friday, Poll Parrot Shoes- the following week, Continental Baking [Wonder Bread, Hostess Cup Cakes], Sweets Co. of America [Tootsie Roll], Campbell Soup Company, and others got THEIR turn).
Normally a half hour show, the last show was one hour...I was 6, my sister was 8 and we both cried. It was 60 years before I learned it ended because of Bob’s health
Great Scott! Howdy Doody time!
It's from back to the Future 3
It's amazing that humanity survived the cold war.
That damn doll can dance better than most everybody these days.
I remember in the 1950's when I watched this as an 11 year old, good times...
Indiana jones brought me here
How so? Which film?
Marcus Blackwell The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull

I may be 25 but I can see that it's apparent that this is a good show. Everyone seems so pessimistic & critical of a children's show based of a 2 minute clip from a show that ran for 13 years. Let's introduce a little thing called context shall we? Here we go: first of all this was a show produced after the war & the depression area so such " shameless advertising" was necessary due to lack of limited communication & entertainment mediums & technological restrictions. So this was meant to stimulate economic growth & get the message across effectively. The children singing that song represents the hope that the next generation will bring after 2 world wars. As for the dolls, they were crafted with great effort love, time & imagination. In those days a lot of factories were not available to make such things because they were used for contributing to the war effort & then likely converted to provide basic necessities for society to rebuild the economy & infrastructure. So the supplies to make the dolls had to often be tracked down, assembled by hand, painted, carved often without the assistance of a woodshop workshop or power tools. All to say that a lot went into making shows like Howdy Doo & others like it were well thought out & planned. This is true regardless of whether or not we can recognize, acknowledge or validate that. It speaks for itself & those who are observant & discerning can see that this much is plain to see.
Very sensible. I have no recollection of the show but my older sister had a Doody marionette so they were being mass produced in the 50s.
Oh man I would’ve loved this show if I lived back then, I was obsessed with toy story and cowboys
Every morning before eating my cereal --- I use to listen to it!
Even Pennywise would run away in terror from this clown LOL
Lmao
Yes, back in the 1950's Kellogg's Rice Krispies was still around and more popular than ever, and putting 1--% whole cream on your cereal was the best part of it...No such thing as diets or skim milk. Milk back then was sold in glass bottles and delivered by milkmen in trucks and same in a horse and wagon ! Those were the real good old days.
Michael Friedman Yeah it was good if you were white
Shandon De Rose just what are you implying about rice krispies?
wabbitking1 Nothing. The era was a fantastic time to live in. If you were white
The milk would freeze in the winter. Cream would rise to the top. Lucky kid if you got to lick the paper stopper!
+Shandon De Rose Milk was delivered in black neighborhoods too.
“Oh sure great! Don’t wait for me!”
You have to remember one thing about the "brainwashing" of old TV ads, at least they were plain foods that didn't foster hate or violence. The commercials were so important that when Buffalo Bob had a heart attack, NBC set up a one-camera, one-mic studio in his home and microwaved his segment back to downtown. Kids were told that Bob was "on assignment" at Pioneer Village. They would check in with him and, ironically, he would do the commercials. Commercials pay for the show, you know.
GREAT SCOTT!
I'm cracking up, because it's clear that after, "It's Howdy Doody time" (x2), half of the kids don't even know/remember the words and just mumble on through. And the cameraman just keeps on panning over their confused, distracted, cross-eyed little faces. *Then* he realizes his mistake and zips right on up to the older kids who do know the words. XD
Just like adults trying to sing the Star Spangled Banner.
Today they are someone’s grandma or grandpa
@@SeverSTL That's sad.
@@cggg5089 No doubt. Possibly even someone's great grandparent.
The song is written to the tune of "Ta Ra Ra Boom De Ay" so I would imagine the kids singing the lyrics to that song instead. The original was written in 1891!
I remember watching this show when I was a wee one ...
I love the 50's
That’s a pretty bad-ass dance.
the deep voice that is singing the rice krispies song was also a singer featured in disney's "grim grinning ghost" song played in the haunted mansion attraction at disneyland resort.
This was a great program that I look foward to everyday.
Holy fucking balls, this is terrifying.
Yoicks. Used to watch this as a kid. Had no idea I was being marketed to. Rather blatant, no?
This shit fucking creep me out.
Slendy Lol. Came here pushed by curiosity, hearing "Howdy Doody" for the first time in American Horror Story season 4 !
Oiseau Rare Back To The Future 3 for me.
Slendy wtf is wrong with the tv shows back then ........ damn there more r rated then movies today
Slendy IKD slendy....!!! your pic is pretty damn freaky!! LOL!!
+Slendy I use to watch Howdy Doody on the TV when I was 5 years old, about 60 years ago....it didn't creep me out then, but now it does...lol
That puppet is so creepy...
I remember watching Howdy Doody as a child. -sigh, now i feel real old-
Ohh. Looking at this through a much different lens now.
I mentioned to my brother where your mind goes when ur single and alone most of the time ;) start to sing It’s howdy doody time . I ask seri to find it : she didn’t know him …. OMG 😅I’m not alone after all ! 😂😂😂😂😂
The great Thurl Ravenscroft singing the Rice Krispies commercial, with his bass voice.
+cub19 Yeah! When I heard it I thought,"Why's Tony the Tiger singing about Rice Krispies? He sponsors Frosted Flakes!":-)
Tony the tiger
Richard Ranke Corporate synergy.
this was the first tv show to broadcast in color
They should make this a commercial for like super bowl or something. This bring back good memories!!!
the commercial sounds like the world's first rap. (and the world's best rap)
Seeing this today, if it were any cornier, it would pop.But we all loved it when we were little!
Now don't give up yet. The Sixties Generation is now going to be the elderly generation...no telling what can happen...Love, Dylan and......still hold true for this flower child...hugs
"Good morning Mr. Doody! How are you Mr. Doody! You look terrific Mr. Doody! Right this way Mr. Doody!"
Who here remember this from "Fridays"?
How is it that my wife has memories of being on the Howdy Doody Show and she wasn't born until 1962? And has never been to New York.
Putting whole milk or cream on your Rice Krispies! Nowadays it would be skimmed milk. These days you can't even get cream for coffee in restaurants, let alone cereal.
And people in those days weren't nearly as fat. Figure that. They really were better times.

Worrying about diets and being paranoid about calories and carbs wasn't a big deal then. Now, in year 2011 - 2015, the scare tactics are all over the place. You have to take yourself AWAY from the mass media (Radio, TV) to become sane and aware again and aware of your own mind and body energy as I have. The Buddha Christ was is awesome in his teachings! Anyway, I enjoyed Howdy Doody, it was a fun and clever show. I ignore the commercials. Some of the small people, which are grown now or reincarnated, are enjoying it all and some are wondering while others look bored. Also consider they're seeing the Marionette "Howdy Doody" which they only saw on T.V. before. If you consider that, now consider whom is pulling YOUR strings in 2011 - 2015; Church, Government, Western Medicine?? Live Free, enjoy the show for what it is...entertainment.
Crazy to think these kids are in their 70s now
Commercialism right out from the start. So glad I was brought up on BBC radio and television.
I love this show
This was my dad's favorite show
When my uncle showed me his howdy doody i screamed and ran
LUV' this show when I was a kid...No wonder I'm half nuts!!!
kelloggs rice krispies kelloggs rice krispies i know that song is going to stay in my head the whole day.
Back to the future 2 is why im here :P
Kellogg's was one of Howdy's long-time sponsors- this is a 1954 opening sequence [from the 5:30pm(et) weekday edition] , featuring Doc Whipple on the organ, with an "integrated" opening commercial for Rice Krispies. And yes, that's Thurl Ravenscroft delivering the "basso" vocal- he was also pitching Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes as "Tony" at the time...Bob Smith had a tendency to sound like a "car salesman" as "Howdy" and "himself", but he was a master salesman!
WHAT IN THE HELL WAS THAT CLOWN LOOKING AT THE CERAEAL
+AssassinBl4de Xx To think, I grew up with this little guy named HOWDY DOODY...wow, I'm getting old...lol
No No He's probably having WW2 flashbacks, poor man
@@StevClifSylv LOL
That was a character named Clarabell, a mute clown played by Bob Keeshan, who later created Captain Kangaroo. Clarabell appeared on every episode of Howdy Doody.
Because I've sifted through a lot of material about Howdy, and read Howard Davis' "Say Kids, What Time Is It?"- probably the best "inside" book on Howdy you'll ever read, 'mick'.
YEA FOR HOWDY DOODY. I GREW UP WITH HIM.
Once upon a time clowns were beloved children's entertainment.
No, Thurl Ravenscroft was the voice of Tony the Tiger, also he sang the song at the Beginning of the "Grinch" TV special and was the voice of many characters at Disneyland.
jajajaja I've seen this in Back to the Future, part 3.
Is it just me, or does Howdy Doody remind you of Paul Ryan?
Michael DeSantis he actually reminds me of Comey. Disturbing.
That just made me mildly nauseous.....lol
The show came on TV early afternoon on Saturday, if I remember. I never really liked the show as a kid. He scared me actually. And Buffalo Bob looked creepy too. But I cried at the Easter Bunny too, (like most kids). The only time I watched the show was when my Dad gave me and my brother haircuts. My Dad thought I liked it I guess. I never talked back to Dad, oh I really wish I had.
Wow - I totally just watched a video on RUclips about Comey and Howdee Doodee - that's why I came here!
Crazy!
Daniel Jeffery The guy sitting w/ the kids looks like a younger version of him.... that is CRAZY!
I barely remember these but they were all we had back then, I was born in 1953
I love his little dance/trot it's so cool. Great example of early Americana television.
The inspiration for Woody's Roundup.
My teacher right now, he has a howdy doody doll, but changed his clothes and its name to Charlie doody
Howdy Doody literally terrified. The shit.Out. Of. ME
Me too. Born in 1959, I refused to watch it.
Sarah .I I'm watching this at 12: 39pm at night holy fuck this is creepy as hell...I'm scared as fuck rn
one of my favorites....had all the dolls. wish I had them now...
tony the tiger voice doing the rice krispies thing?
Bob Smith did the voice of Howdy Doody for the American version of the show. Since Smith wasn't a ventriloquist, he recorded Howdy's lines beforehand, and they were played on the show. In the commercial, you can hear Thurl Ravenscroft (voice of Tony the Tiger for over 50 years), and probably the Mellomen, along with Smith.
Love it!
its sad that this will never fly on tv today
Maybe I was not in the know, but when I was a kid, I never watched Howdy Doody. I do remember its replacement after it got cancelled, The Shari Show. That was a good kids show.
If there is a civilization 73 light years away this is the radio message they will receive from Earth
pretty shameless advertising
randy joble LMAO. Not much different from RUclips's advertisers, except the technology's better.
so its basically youtube in the 1950s
But it works don't it?
@@t.b.w6609 but much better
Thurl Ravenscroft's voice on the Rice Krispies jingle. Nobody else has a voice like Mr. Ravenscroft.
Imagine getting a late night cereal meal at 12am. Then you get your spoon turn around and see a clown right above your cereal.
Esta es la inspiración de Woody :v que pinche miedo X'D
Great Scot...
Howdy Doody time.
I watch us a lot as a kid and really enjoyed it. Peter the pumpkin eater
When watched back to the future 2 or 3 i saw this
De este personaje nació Woody de Toy Story
I was in the first row of the Peanut Gallery. I'm on a mission to check out all of them to see if I see myself. If I do, I'll probably freak out lol. I remember that day very well.
I was waiting for the Marlboro commercial.
i dont know why, but i suddenly want to eat 7 boxes of kellogg's rice krispies
I was not the only one thinking of Doc Brown.
So...this is what inspired showdown bandit
Holy cow. I was wrong. It was Thurl Ravenscroft. I forgot that the jingle was recorded on the west coast while "Howdy" originated from NYC. Dennis
Woodys round up was inspired off this show
Hey kids what time is it? It's Howdy Doody time!
@ very beginning:
YOU'RE WRONG! IT' AIN'T HOWDY DOODY TIME, IT'S MORPHIN' TIME!
.....haha, I said "doody" :P
Am I the only one who is craving Rice Krispies after this
Personally, I think the strings are a little too obvious at times, but otherwise it’s pretty good.
Great Scott! Howdy Doody time.
