I'm 18 now, but my childhood was this show. I use to watch these episodes to fall asleep. Hearing my favorite character say goodbye was heartbreaking. And I say thanks to them for being such a big part of my life.
I can imagine "Clarabell" standing there during the big buildup to his final words, all the while in his head he's like "Quit smacking me, Bob...quit smacking me, Bob..."
I saw this last show. Missed the 1st one I hadn't been born yet. The show premiered in 1947. I wasn't born till July 1948. I teared up all over again seeing this closing scene. Oh the memories.
Even though the show was pre-taped in advance..and "Buffalo Bob"watched it with his family..at home..the scene..where "Clarabell"said "Goodbye Kids"was too much for him..he quickly got out of the house..went to the gold course"and played the worst round of golf"..he was too upset to watch that last show.
We grew up on this show. And Clarabelle went on .. as Ed Keeshan as Captain Kangaroo ... Such great memories. Princess SummerFallWinterSpring ... It really was the birth of TV.
@@MiketheratguyMultimediayah I thought u were actually gonna hear Keshan Crying mid sentence.. and welling up like he couldn’t make it until the fade out …boooooooo
Many moments in the history of television may rank in the top 10 and this one is up there that Clarabell the clown finally speaks and says two words Goodbye Kids.
It was an eschatological moment which was as memorable as when Kennedy died. I bawled and was still wiped out at the foot doctors when he asked me what was wrong. Clarabelle said Goodbye Kids. Just watching this brings it all back. I have 2 Howdy Doody Dolls and a big Buffalo Bob. Thanks to the whole deceased gang.
Sad, but also slightly creepy. I honestly mean no disrespect with that comment. This was way before my time, but I've heard about it for years. I can see why it would leave an indelible impression on the kids of that time. It's like that moment when all of our collective childhoods ended, and we never knew it. For many kids, this tv moment may have marked that end.
In an age of tv series that constantly try to have a memorable series finale, this tops them all. "Newhart" had a similar moment in its final episode when Larry’s brothers, Daryl and Daryl, told their new wives to shut up.
Came here from "Bonanas for Bonanza", it's a podcast, you won't be disappointed!
Also came here from Bonanas for Bonanza. Dalton was right, I'm going to have at least 2 nightmares from watching that.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAWWWWW
@@Jonnyb3222 You must buy your horse at least as much jewelry you buy your wife. Life and lessons on the range....
A moment in television history that will never happen again.
I can’t even begin to count how many times Jim Cornette has brought to random RUclips clips. Here I am again and not disappointed
Cornette knows some good stuff. He got me here myself.
I assume that is some youtuber you like so that's great you enjoy it. I'm here because i went down a hours long wiki rabbit hole

I remember watching these when they were first broadcast on tiny black and white sets- tiny screens,-huge sets, sad to see the end again.
@@crankyyankee7290 that's neat.
You can hear some kids crying.
...and at this moment you can probably hear ME crying. What an affecting moment!
Can feel the tension in the room…
I wasn't even born
when this show came out, seeing Clairabelle saying
"good-bye kids" almost makes me
wanna cry.😢
Me too…
It was on a tribute to Lew Anderson. 😢😢
That’s because it felt very genuine.

My mom watched this show when she was little. She told us how this scene made her cry so much.
They may have lost Howdy Doody but they gained Lamb Chop. She lives on to this day

Jim Cornette of all people brought me here.
Same here. I'm only a little familiar with this show (before my time) but I had to see the ending after him and Brian brought it up.
Same. It's not nearly as disturbing as Brian made it sound. It's sad!

Ending with Auld Lang Syne was perfect!
You can actually hear the little kids crying at the end. 😢😢😢
Clarabelle brought the entire house (and the entire peanut gallery at home) to tears and all he had to do was utter two words....GOODBYE KIDS.
A fitting final words for the final episode of the Howdy Doody Show.
When they did the new syndicated Howdy-Doody Show they went back to Clarabelle being unable to talk along with a new actor under the make-up.
You can see the tears.

The wiki article described this sequence as "ominous" and I can see why lol. Those poor kids

Thanks to Bonanas for Bonanza episode 35 I am here.
I'm 60 now and I remember Claribell having such a huge creep factor, me nor my brothers and sisters like him🤔
If you look up the actor and what he ended up doing you'll see your instincts were right!

I’ve never watched howdy doody fully but I sure know about it. Just sing that las scene makes sad because much more was lost than at show.
Thanks Jim and Brian . That was creepy af

@@jamessilva7991 because of the credits in the dark room and then an ad for a new show pops out of nowhere.

How many bodies do you guys think Clarabelle had buried in his backyard?
I do not know why they played the new year song at the end, though.

It truly was. Fucked up some kids really good. There were reports of children reduced to tears or vomit, utterly terrified.
