  • I was surprised that Ovaltine still existed. I bought a jar and I loved the the stuff. At the same time that I bought the Ovaltine, I also bought a jar of Ghirardelli powdered chocolate drink mix. I preferred the Ovaltine. The Ovaltine jar is empty, and the Ghirardelli jar is still in the cabinet.
In this commercial Buffalo Bob Smith is promoting the vitamin enriched Ovaltine drink mix. Bob Keeshan (future-to-be Captain Kangaroo) is portraying Clarabell the clown.

I always drank Ovaline malt flavored. and it's so good I'm going to fix a cup now. This commercial was before I was born and before clowns were all alleged psychopathic killers and were beloved by children. Who are now all in their seventies.

"Ovaltine. Have you ever had this stuff? Why do they call it Ovaltine? The mug is round. The jar is round. They should call it Roundtine."

Back then, The Wander Company marketed it. Today, Nestle makes it...

According to Stephen Davis' "Say Kids, What Time Is It? Notes From the Peanut Gallery", when Bob Smith rehearsed the Ovaltine commercials, he usually referred to it as "Ovlatrine".

Davis also said that Ovaltine suggested Clarabell speaks his first words doing a pitch for Ovaltine. Thankfully they were ademently refused.

Clarabell is here played by Bob Keeshan, who would go on to be Captain Kangaroo. There were three Clarabells, and he was the first and the best. He was more cuddly and less creepy.

As far as I'm concerned, ALL.clowns are creepy.

The clowns of that era which was mostly before my time are basically extinct. Though of course you can still see some of it on RUclips. Stephen King and all that creepy clown stuff that followed pretty much ended it.
But the 1950s, 60s, even 70s clown was a curious creature. Especially when you look at the Bozo franchise, which was pretty hardcore and even involved training, certification and surprisingly specific dress requirements.
Many of these clowns basically ran their TV shows, with kids and even show staff and camera crew obediently following orders. As a result you're left with this parental, boss-authority-type figure in an outlandish suit, whimsical hair and face and a goofy voice.
I'm not sure what that meant, but it seemed some statement was being made. It was just.... interesting to see lol.

Even back in the 50s, clowns were creepy. Have clowns ever not been creepy?
