Velma Dawson was the puppeteer or marionettist who created the Howdy Doody marionette for the 1950s TV show THE HOWDY DOODY SHOW.
I also remember the other cast members, Buffalo Bob Smith, Robert Keeshan, Bill Le Cornec, Dayton Allen and Judy Tyler.
Thanks for joining me on my travels on yet another trip to the past, down memory lane.

Hi friend Steve! Your cemumentaries are terrific. Howdie Doodie is such a marker for those times. Much simpler and slower moving; and in black and white, too.
they sure were simpler times. thanks, Saykhel :-)
It's Howdy Doody time.
It's Howdy Doody time.
Bob Smith and Howdy too.
Say Howdy do to you.
Lets give a rousing cheer
Cause Howdy Doody's here
It's time to start the show
So kids let's go!!
I still remember the song Steve!!
thanks, steve, lol, now i'm going to be singing it in my sleep :-)
What time is it? It's Memory Lane Trips With Steve time! Thanks Steve, you do a great job with these videos.
Lol thanks Ray 😊👍
While my older sister watched Howdy Doody, I was a Captain Kangaroo girl myself, lol. Thanks for another great video Steve. :)
I watched Howdy Doody in the 50's and never knew Clarabelle was Captain Kangaroo! That's really cool! I really liked watching the puppet shows like Shari Lewis and Kukla, Fran and Ollie. It was such a simple time for kids then and it didn't take much to entertain us or amaze us. Thanks Steve for more great memories.
I must have been one of Howdy’s biggest fans. In the days of early TV, not everyone had one, so we kids would gather at each other’s houses @ 4:30. I can still hear the theme song and feel the excitement! It ended at 5:30 and we went home to dinner. Ahhhh: memories of simple, happy times. 📺
Your at it again brightening my day it's raining cloudy and cold here. But here you are bringing a beautiful childhood memory, And your knowledge of your subject is excellent. Keep it up Steve. Stay Safe.
Thanks Brunk 😊👍
I just barely remember Howdy Doody. It went off the air when I was about 4 years old. I do remember Ta-Ra-Ra Boom-De-Ay. It was my favorite song when I was little. Thanks for the memories.
Wow...I had not heard that in a while - I even remember Howdy's brother - Double Doody! Thanks as always - my day once again is made as a bright smile lit my face when you posted!
Glad to hear that William 😊👍
Morning Steve! Thanks for sharing your video!
Thanks for watching them Glenn 😊👍
Thank you Steve for another awesome video. Stay safe and blessed.
Thanks David and you too 😊👍
Thank you for playing a theme song to your videos.. Nothing too spooky lol
I like his music too. This one is upbeat which is great!
Thanks for the feedback Lisa 😊👍
Hi Steve, another interesting Vlog my friend 🙋♀️
I watched some of the reruns when I was younger and remember them. Well thanks for sharing
I’m not in a hurry to move in. Lol
Hi Steve. Absolutely love your videos. Was wondering if you have ever done Bonnie and Clyde graves? Keep up the great work.
Not yet, but they are definitely on my list for the future. Thanks Hairdon 😊👍
Born in 1951, I do remember Howdy Doody, if vaguely. Captain Kangaroo was one of my favorites for a long time. Thanks for the memories!
Steve....Of all the great vlogs of the Memory trips you have done this one is the absolute best. Kudos to you my friend. This show with Buffalo Bob and Howdy was the most cherished show of my childhood. I am now drinking my favorite coffee and smiling with tears of happiness from a memory you brought back. Thank you Steve. Best to your family. Stay safe.
that's really nice to hear, Norma. i wasn't sure how many viewers would remember or be interested. i'm glad to see quite a few are :-)
Thanks Steve loved Howdy Doody cried for days when it was canceled
I worked with and lived across the hallway from Chris Smith at Florida state hospital for five years. I did not realize Chris was Bob Smiths son. One day I came up the steps and there stood Buffalo Bob. I was stunned. He asked me did I know what time it was. Like an idiot I answered “ it’s Howdy Doody Time”. He was not impressed. This was in 1992. Chris and his wife, were great people
Learned a lot . Growing up watched some reruns of Howdy Doody. Watched Captain Kangaroo growing up. Fond childhood memories. Didn’t know anything about Howdy Doody’s mom. Don’t want you going anywhere anytime soon. Memory Lane is a nice place to walk through. Thank you for all these walks down memory Lane. God bless you and your family.
Halfway through its 13 year run, the Howdy Doody show switched over to color. NBC who ran the series, also owned RCA, and in an effort to sell more color sets, they used Howdy to make that happen, as it had a massive audience. It was beloved by children and adults nationwide. As you may or may not know, Clarabell the Clown was mute, that is until its final episode. The last two words aired during that September 24th, 1960 episode, were sadly spoken by Clarabell, “Goodbye kids.” That was a little more than three months after I was born. In other words, I got doody!😢❤ Another great video, Steve… well done!
I didn’t know or remember either of those things. Thanks for sharing more awesome TV trivia RH! 😀👍
Thank you again Steve for bringing back some great memories for me... I remember running home from school to watch Howdy Doodie Time... Be Well , Be Safe...
What a wonderful cemetery! So calm and peaceful there.Glad to know you’ll rest with your family there. Thanks for taking us down memory lane.❤️😊
Velma Dawson was my mom’s favorite aunt! She was an amazing woman. Great video! 😃
Thanks for sharing that with us, Michelle.
Nice to see you again that is one show I did not watch. I hope your mom is doing well as always great job
Hey Steve! When I was about 4 years old, my Mom took me to see Howdy Doody live in the studio in NYC! I remember being a bit frightened by Clarabelle the clown. We lived in Weehawken NJ right across the river from the New York skyline. Man...am I getting old or what?! 😁. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane!
Bob Keeshan is buried on Long Island, but he died at Ascutney Hospital in Windsor Vt. A friend of mine was the medical officer on duty the night he died, and it was my friend who pronounced him dead. He always kidded that he killed Captain Kangaroo, and I pointed out he also killed Clarabell. The Howdy Duty show always ended with Buffalo Bob telling the viewing children to tell their parents they wanted to go to Sunday school. Our family was not a church going family. So when I told my father that I wanted to go to Sunday school, his response was "What's the matter? Isn't Monday through Friday enough for you?"
Captain Kangaroo taught me to always say “please and thank you” at the end of the show.
Wow, that would really be weird to be the person that declares any famous person dead. Especially if you were a fan. Thanks for sharing this with us Raymond 👍
awesome memory steve pat yourself on the back you educate a lot of us viewers what type of cameras do you use for your videos
Thanks Bryan! I appreciate you saying that. Most of the time I just use my iPhone 😊👍
@@TheGraveyardChannel thank you iPhone does awesome work i use mine to for the funeral home I work for
This is so interesting
What about Phineas T. Buster and Dilly Dally!!!!! Good vlog Steve👍😷
I went to elementary school with a kid who was a dead ringer for Dilly Dally, and, unfortunately, that was his nickname.
Lol 😂
Thanks for bringing back all these great memories from childhood. I loved the Captain and his crew. Interesting history as well. Take care out there, stay safe. 🙂
OMG, Steve we are the same age your videos bring back a flood of memories! 🎶It’s Howdy Doody Time...It’s Howdy Doody Time🎶
Steve, I quite enjoyed this video. I remember watching Howdy Doody along with Clarabell. I didn't realize when I was young, that Clarabell and Captain Kangaroo were one in the same person. I too started to sing the jingle "It's Howdy Doody Time, It's Howdy Doody time like one of your responders to the video. Thanks too for bringing a smile to my face on a cold Canadian morning!
I watched Captain Kangaroo as a kid and my dad watched Howdy Doody when he was a child. Thanks for bringing back more great memories Steve! I also want to say how much I love seeing the Palm Springs/Cathedral City area, very beautiful. I live in Albuquerque so it’s somewhat similar in terms of climate. Definitely cooler here though. Cheers!!
Hi Steve GREAT Vlog, always just so intresting, informative, refreshing and fun. Blessings of Healing Love and Light for your mom, you and your other loved ones. Hope your mom is happy and feeling good 🙂. 🙏Take Care Be Safe
Good morning Steve thank you for sharing your video 📸 I remember that show I was little but I was mostly into cartoons 😁 but away hope you are doing well stay safe out there.
I learned a lot of new things today. I always thought that Bob Smith created the Howdy Doody marionette. I also didn't know that the Princess was also in an Elvis movie. Thanks for the info Steve!
Glad you enjoyed it brother Tim 😊👍
Buffalo Bob and Howdy appeared in an episode of Happy Days. It’s one of the best episodes
YA I RECALL SEEING THAT HAPPY DAYS EPISODE,IT IS A GOOD ONE!
I always know what time it is when I clink on your videos Steve…reminiscing time ❤️
Great video as always. Little too young for Howdy Doody but right in with Captain Kangaroo. Watched him a lot and was one of the first shows I ever watched. We didn't get a TV until 1965.
Thank you for mention me in your vlog. I really enjoyed this one.
I always love watching you videos and look forward to each new one. Some have more meaning to me than others such as this one. I was a huge Howdy Doody fan and even received a Howdy Doody marionette for Christmas. Thanks for the memories, Steve!
we now have Chuckie...lol...It amazes me how close they get those graves, remembering a vault and casket...and so close together.
THank you for sharing the gravesites of Howdy Dowdys MOm and other gravesites ! I enjoy your channel ! Have a happy Sunday and a great new week !
I watched both Howdy Doody and Captain Kangaroo but never realized that the Captain was also the clown on Howdy Doody. Great information in this vlog!
This show was before my time but another excellent video, thank you! Brad Dexter also played in the movie Run Silent, Run Deep, one of my favourite movies.
Hello,
You always outdo yourself
Your just a walking wikipedia
I think we should call you steve the walking walkapedia😂lol
Although i was still in diapers then i vaguely remember seeing reruns when i got older.once again above and beyond you get an A+ today yes you will have nice view and nice neighbors.(just dont be in a hurry) you got a long way to go✌️🕊️👍🙂
Lol i’ve had worse nicknames 😂👍
@@TheGraveyardChannel me2🙄👋
This was interesting! It was before my time but I knew of the show because of my Dad. Never knew how it all began. I looked up what $300 is in today's money and it is over $3500. It's pretty cool to see all the famous people where your grandparents are.
Thanks, as always, for sharing with us Rhetty 😊👍
Such wonderful shows and good times. Thank you for the memories.🤔
Thank u steve for another lovely video hope all is great with u an family
I never saw the show, way before my time! I do know that Elvis was pretty broken up when Judy Tyler died just a few weeks after finishing filming Jailhouse Rock. Surprised that Ole Blue Eye's does not have a bigger memorial like some other stars! Thanks Steve!
Great video Steve. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. 👍👍
Thanks Garren and you too 😊👍
Thank you Steve,
i remember sharing your future resting place when you visited Garths future resting place
here in oklahoma, safe travels, wow, i don't remember watching Howdy Doody maybe
to young to remember.
Another great video. Thank you Steve
Hi Steve! Great job on this video! I remember Howdy Doody when I was a youngster! I am also so happy that Frank has a new headstone! He deserves it!😀👍
Thanks Bill! Looking forward to seeing your next video. It’s been a while.
Hi Steve, Thanks, Howdy Doody is a little before our time, but I always heard about it.
I heard that Elvis would never watch Jail House Rock because of the death of that young lady, so sad. Thanks again 👍
Hi Steve,
Great vlog👍Interesting story about Brad Dexter and Sinatra's friendship. I'm pretty sure Dexter was also in Von Ryan's Express with Frank. I admire Sinatra's loyalty.
I'd be very pleased to be in the same Cemetary with those names also👍
Steve. You see the reruns on RUclips l am 63 years old l can remember watching. It as a young child when first started to do the reruns of the show did you know Jackie Gleason helped put the show on the air he. Put money into the show he got a percentage of the show for that he had the show do a episode. Live on his show.
I remember they brought Howdy Doody back on in the late 70s. My father would remember the original show. I agree with you on the cremation. I'm going direct, no viewing, no muss, no fuss. Just stick me in a cardboard box and toss me in.
Thank you for remembering Howdy Doody's creator. Some don't remember the people who made the marionette that entertained the children.
Thanks for sharing this great video. I don't remember Howdy Doody but I did love Captain Kangaroo! Very nice and interesting video! Blessings to you and your family!
Thanks Diane and same to you and yours 😊👍
I love this video Steve, I have learn something new I never heard of that puppet but funny that my 11year old son while i was watching your video he walked by and saw the picture and said “oh I know that puppet “ 🤷♀️ I’m so glad that Frank got a new head stone I love him! But I like the epitaph he had before better ! I think they should have keep it and add these new words , also your resting place for the far far away future looks really nice !!!
I love watching all your vlogs , Steve. Thank you for all you do.
I remember watching old reruns of Howdy Doody with my youngest brother. Brought back some great memories...I also loved watching Romper room with my brother. ❤
Omg, I forgot about romper room. I will have to add it to my list for the future lol 😂👍
I was surprised by Frank Sinatra's grave marker.... I was excepting an ornate private mausoleum, Italian style, not a simple flat grave marker. Ole' Blue Eyes was easily one of the most successful and influential entertainers of the 20th Century - no doubt!
Good video Steve, especially when you showed your final resting spot. I'm glad that you'll be interned near your grandparents. I'll be laid to rest among my family members as well.
Great production, you sure did a lot of research on this one, lots of interesting facts on the history; not only the people but the show itself. Too bad she only got $300, how sad.
Well done Steve. Best-Ron
Hi Ron, thanks for the comment. I don't know how I've missed your channel, but I just recently discovered it and you do an amazing job. You are a great story teller and you've inspired me to try to be better at story telling. I just subscribed to your channel. Better late than never, I guess!
@@TheGraveyardChannel - hey there Steve, so glad you made it over to our place. I think you do a great job, you don’t need to improve anything!! You have inspired me. 👍
Hi Steve! I loved that show. Many happy memories. Ok, is it just me or if Howdy Doody were a person - I'm thinking Ron Howard from Andy Griffith and The Music Man and Happy Days. Cute as a button and adorable optimism. Or is that just me?.... excuse my rambling. Blessings - Judith 🎭🎵
Lol I think I saw a picture of Ron Howard posing with howdy Doody. So you are definitely not the only one to notice the resemblance 😂
Hey Steve, thought you would appreciate this. I just purchased a headstone for my 3rd great grandparents Bretta and Lars Bjorkman, originally from Sweden. They are buried in the same town that Phyllis Gates was from, Dawson, MN. The town she’s buried in’s funeral home is the one that helped me purchase the headstones for my ancestors. I’ll send you a picture when the headstones are placed. Bretta died in 1914, and Lars died in 1901 and until now have been in unmarked graves. I thought it was the right thing to do to purchase headstones for them to honor and remember them. Hope you are doing well.
Howdy from Australia Steve, I never saw the Howdy Doody show. But I remember Judy Tyler who played Princess summer fall winter spring.
she was tragically killed at only 24 in a car accident. Love your videos bye.
thanks yogamantra!
Thanks for all the memories.
Howdy Steve 🙋🏿♀️✝️🛐☮️💜👍🏿. 😃
I always wanted to be in the peanut gallery.
Me too!!! One Halloween my grandfather made me a box with a little horn for my Clarabelle costume!! Beep- Beep!
Captain Kangaroo and Shari Lewis were my favorites when I was little. I was born in 1956, so I don't remember much about Howdy Doody.
Hi Steve thanks again and for your time doing this 🤙
My son has a howdy doodle doll, I have it put up. Love this video...❤
Hi Steve! Super vlog and very interesting ! Always learn something new! Thanks for vloggin ,stay safe and keep on vlogging!! Deborah Winnipeg Canada
It doesn't look like you've done "The Rockford Files" yet. That was a wonderful show. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!
It’s definitely on my list Ron and I’ve already visited one of the cast member gravesites. Thanks for the suggestion 😊👍
My mom watched the Howdy Doody show back in the day. I remember seeing Captain Kangaroo as a kid on tv.
So interesting and educational as always.
Thanks Steve!
My mother in law, played princess summer, fall, winter , spring.. She is an actress by trade. She has starred in many, many tv shows and movies...
Howdy came to Wright-Patterson AFB and did a show from a building I used to work in.
Glad you’re not ready to check in! Thank you.
Oh no. Now the Howdy Doody, song is stuck in my head🤣🤣
Lol me too 😂
Wow 👏 😮 👏 Steve hope Everyone is Great
Great Job as usual. I really enjoy your video's. take care.
Thanks Steve!!! Another great video!!
I don't remember Howdy Duty but I liked Captain Kangaroo a lot and his side kicks like Mr. Green Jean's and the moose. My neighbor and I call another neighbor Mr. Green Jean's because he thinks his garden is so great. We don't want to tell him the truth so we go on admiring his "garden". thanks for another great video.
Hi Steve Really enjoy all your vlogs. Enjoy your week. Joanne 😊
Thank you for doing this one
Was a member of the peanut gallery every afternoon. Have fond memories of the show. I may be mistaken but two bits of trivia on Judy Tyler. One that she died just after the edit of Jail house rock was finished. Elvis Presley was so broken up by her death that he never watched the final cut and I'm fact never did. I also understand she really doesn't have a true final resting place of her own but her ashes are in a in-laws family mausoleum.
Thank you videos of very education when we enjoy them
Awesome Great Job Bro.....
*I Appreciate It* ThankYou !
I remember Howdy Doody But never really watched it. I was more into Romper Room. Enjoyable just the same. 😊
Very good 👍 vlog buddy 👌 like I said before I learn something new every time I watch your vlogs
Always glad to hear that David 😊👍
Steve - FYI, the longest running "Clarabell" (1954-1960) was the big band leader Lew Anderson. He died in Westchester County in May, 2006 and was cremated.
thanks for sharing that with us AO!
Many are supposed that a number of celebrities retire to this area Steve, but a number have over the years. I never met met either Buffalo Bob Smith, or Dayton Allen u fortunately.
Nice story on Sinatra, and Brad Dexter. Was unaware of this.
Production companies, puishrts, and studios often get by with absurdly ll ow payments to creators of famous characters. The during creators of superheroes often have to go to court to receive shared of film, or TV profits today, including theate legendary Stan Lre.
That was so sweet, they don't make shows like that anymore, even though I am Captain Kangaroo generation if it wasn't for Howdy Doody, we would not have my generations wonderful shows...That was so cool Steve, thank you as always!😀💖
I would sit in my high chair and sing the 'Howdy Doody' song.
Awesome video, Steve!
Thanks Carol 😊👍
On the Howdy Doody Show, one segment included silent movie comedies and Buffalo Bob gave the actors new comic names which always broke up the kids in the peanut gallery.
