Hey everyone truck is completed and road worthy! Sorry for such a delay but I never forgot about trying to get a final video out to you all. Hope you enjoy the truck!
This is beautiful. Love these trucks, my parents both had 2003 F-150's when I was growing up. Really cool to see one get this much love and work put into it.
We use the 4bt's in our Bandit chippers and let me tell you they do not quit and will take as much boost as you can give them. Great motor and a great truck! :)
Great build guy! Looks great AND hats off to your Dad for the awesome body work. I put a 2007 5.9 in a 2006 Ford F250. I love the love for the Cummins!
Awesome build quality man! Looks beautiful! I've wanted for years to put a 6bt in a crown Vic chassis and I imagine it would be very similar to an F150
Jeff Clark, Thanks very much! And on your build I would imagine mounting would be very similar and you shouldn't have to many trans tunnel issues unless you go with a manual. Those engine bays were pretty roomy! Would you do an air bag suspension to handle the extra iron? Cause that would be sweet!
I have so many questions about your build (beautiful btw) but one thing I am very curious is what gauge cluster is that in the dash? And once again beautiful job!!!
Jimmy Garcia, It pulls pretty hard I have no complaints, just don't go over the rating that the truck itself can handle is all, it's not like she's a 1 ton
Good work man. Gauges look great. I wish they could still make mechanical injected diesels. Im not a fan of the new emission diesels. Too expensive and too many problems with common rail.
Nate Figueroa, Thanks for the compliment! I like the mechanicals as well but the common rail engines are real animals, to be honest if I had the choice between a mechanical 4bt and a common rail I'd probably had chosen the common rail cause their quieter and run much smoother along with have more power stock than the stock mechanical 4bt. Plus the tuning capabilities are endless being able to tune and reflash the ecm along with modifying the engine. I honestly wrench on these engines all day and the problems they may have are actually very minor, just like any other engine they all have their weak points. Yes the emissions stuff is a pain but you can always get it deleted or if you have a new truck then it's under warranty and you don't have to worry about it. I've seen big power come from both mechanicals, HEUI systems and the common rails and I'm a fan of all three whatever their issues may be, I'm not biased lol
I thought about going with a 4BT-6BT for my 5.4L F-350 XLT incase the engine just gave up on me.Mine had 297,000 Miles and since then was sold.At least with yours now with a 12 Valve in there, you got a good two times or even three times on higher fuel efficiency than a gas gussler Triton gets.
sick build, I have 01 5.4 and I love it, tows 10k np, and on the hi way I've gotten 23-24 kpg, not stock tho, headers, cat delete, full exhaust, programmer and intake and a little internal work.
My 99 f150 4x4 crew cab averaged 18mpg driving through Cali all the time, and towing 4500 from SoCal to Utah it got 16mpg. I just say this because I’ve thought about doing this swap because I had a friend getting close to 30mpg at least that’s what he told me. So I was shocked with the numbers a little.
Mr. P.J.Fry, My mpg is about 26, and I couldn't imagine being able to get 16mpg let alone 18 mpg empty with the truck when it was original, you must have gotten a good one.
Jake Wood, That's pretty good those 318's were good little motors. After alot of driving and tuning I've been getting mid 20's and more than happy with the power.
Jake Wood I have a 99 318 5.2 too but in 2wd. and for some reason I run a little lean and get about 16 avg. mpg I feel less torque in my motor. We haul a 20 ft camper trailer once every summer but how can I get a gearing swap so I can squeeze a little bit more mpg?
Automotive Guru I run 3.50 gears and I still have good pick up pulling steep hills and if it's running lean I'd say check injecters and use a one of those small bottle of Lucas that treat 25 gallons and put some 93 in it see how it does and check plugs I run 3 prong bosh in mine but if your motor is leaning out dont run bosh 3 prong in them
"Mr. CHEAP's" OLD MOTORHOME UNIVERSITY, There's a heavy piece of plate steel that protects the front of the filters and wraps around the bottom, haven't had a single issue in 10,000 miles and the truck as you could guess never goes off road.
That’s such a nice truck. Good job man I’d love to drive that every day. For the air filter you can try 2 smaller ones to fill up the space better and have more surface area for less restriction.
Thanks for the comments! So much has changed with the truck since the last update. I will try to post another next year once the weather warms up over here.
Probably torque-e-er (no real spelling, lol) than the 5.4 2V. How's the top end on the highway? You pretty much have unlimited power with the 4bt. Where did you find the donor block at? I work for Cummins, so this is one of those projects that I have customers come in with that always intrigues me.
@@caseymogensen2579 it's going to go in my 89 xlt. The motor is spent and been wanting another diesel. Looking for a 4bt but it's like finding a unicorn by me. I may ask for a pointer or two if you don't mind
J Dogali, eBay is a big place to find these engines. A lot of them come with Allisons. And if you get an isb they come with computers for engine and trans. Alot of places will ship.
J Dogali, more HP and TQ from stock. Quieter, run smoother since they’re common rail. Plus if you want more power just go to a Cummins dealer and have them throw a military or marine flash file in the ecm. And throw injectors and a turbo on it with a high performance cam. These engines are rear geartrain though is all. You can convert them but it takes some time and resources
Liquidisata, Haha well thanks, I didn't spend nearly as much to get the fuel mileage, but as one of my play vehicles the mileage is one of the perks of driving it.
Great work! I want to do this with a 2003 F150 Supercrew after college. I'm curious about a couple of things. After the conversion were you able to keep your air bags functional in case of an accident? And how did the extra weight affect the braking? Love the clean factory look of the install.
J Wind, Thanks for the compliment. And to answer your question, yes, all of the oe safety equipment works as it should along with the option of using the key to turn off the passenger air bag. As for brake performance with the added weight, which is only about 200 more pounds, there is no brake power loss compared to the gas engine.
TheBackpackcountry, Good idea, I was going for keeping the truck as stock appearing and subtle on the changes I wanted to make. I'll be doing another video soon for HP and TQ numbers, bit I have changed my intake since this video. Thanks for the compliments!
You drive crazy fast and still get okay fuel mileage. Have you ever just driven normal 65 MPH ? You'd get 30mpg i bet. If I can ever get my dad to part with his 91 F150 Id love to drop a 4bt in it
Looking to do the same thing wondering how much do I have to fork out to get this build. Mines a 03 with 255000 on the dash love my truck want to keep for life but also love the diesel sound
In the end the truck is still a half ton so putting a motor that came out of a one ton truck in a half ton chassis didn’t make a whole lot of sense. Now do like an international DT360 swap in like an 08-10 F350 now that would be awesome!
Lol nah man, 1200 really isn’t as bad as you think, it’d only be hard on her if I ran 1200 degrees for extended periods of time. With my new setup I can barely touch 1200
when it comes to like the wiring and wiring harness and everything what did you do? Did you have to order a kit? I'm interested in doing this and I honestly don't know what all I will need other than the adapter plate.
Daniel Nunnally, The wiring harnesses I used were the factory 5.4 engine harness stripped down for just the essential sensors, for the trans i used the factory 4r70w trans harness and used it to splice into the pcs trans harness you need to buy, that way my backup lights worked on the truck.
Edgar Martinez Destroked sells a tach kit and as far as the trans it is a built 4r70w with billet shafts a larger clutch drum and a performance valve body. The trans is controlled by a PCS-2000 controller which is all laptop based tuning to get shift points correct along with converter lockup and those things. Yes the o/d button in the shifter still works.

I would love to do a 4bt swap into a Tahoe or a Suburban. I'm looking for something that is huge (family hauler) that won't be towing, but has an efficient diesel in it. You think it'd be possible to do it for under $25k?

This is cool, I think it would’ve been more suited to throw in the 7.3😛
Fløw Franco, It crossed my mind but so did the severe extra weight haha
My bucket list idea is a 67-79 Ford body on a gen one Cummins frame....with the 5 speed. Most gen ones are sad body wise now.
Are you still doing these swaps?
Could you please come up with a list of everything you needed to do the 4bt swap?
Logan Jansen, send me an e-mail. The link is under the about tab on my profile.
Logan Jansen, can you send me another email, I can't get the one you sent to come up to resend the list I made for you.
