I know most of you guys aren't here for diesel trucks but I felt like making this video and testing out some new equipment! Hope you enjoy!
Well for sure I am!
Hurst makes a short throw shifter for the stock m5od to address the super long throw if thats useful knowledge I personally have one in my 07 definitely added more cabin noise and more vibration in the shifter. Trough reduction advertised as 30% less
What are you talking about that is a dope build. One of a kind
Maybe not, but at least it’s more original than another v8 swap
@@robertt9342 agreed, basically it's a diy amarok
as a ranger owner and a VW fan.... thank this guy for me, now I know this CAN be done. just gotta find a busted down TDI
junk yard TDI cars are getting more tough to find but there some out there easier if you can get the whole car for all the goodies
If you have the space, just buy a whole tdi car for parts, it's a mk4 vw. You'll be able to make a lot of your money back parting it out
The 1.9tdi engine came in various power levels and in Golf's, passat's, jetta, audis a3s and a4s but earlier models around the 99-05 era and well beyond. Good solid engines ALZ And ALH blocks are stronger and come intercooled from the factory and are capable of serious power with little or no mods and stage 1 on my bora (jetta) alz is the same power as this with only software mods..... Stage 2 is 220hp and 400ish ft/b of torque but needs a mild hybrid and ALH headstuds to be safe
@@kylewise3111 believe me I know, ive owned a total of 4 Mk4's at this point 2 bugs a jetta and a golf. you can make a ton parting them out especially if the interior is in OK shape.
@@markphillips6998 I have one of the "clean" 2.0 tdi's in my Beetle. i figure I can either find an older clapped out MK4, or find someone whos wrecked one of these things and get it programmed back out of "test mode"
When my 3.0 ranger's motor inevitably dies and my jettas body inevitably rusts away. Im going to do this lol.
Exactly the reason I did it!!
That 3.0 will be around a while longer.
My 3.0 Ranger engine lasted 290k miles 🤷♂️
My old 3.0 ranger went 480k until I sold it and its still going. I drove the hell out of it and wasnt very good at keeping up with maintenance on it. It got occasional oil changes if i felt like it.
Yeah, my 3.0 ranger had 375,000 miles on it when I totaled it out in Tennessee on a road trip. You may be waiting for a while
"I liked it, I bought it, and now it's this" that's literally every car guy summed up in one phrase, no matter what you like
This swap seems like it should be something the ranger should get as a factory option.
back in the 80s, the rangers had several diesel options.
Vp 110hp you can make like 250hp with the right tune, injectors pump and turbo, pd/cr tdis +400hp with the same "receipt" as vps tdi's. Magic keyword to tdis "Garrett 2265 vk "
when my wallet fills back up, one will be on order :)
One of my friends had a big turbo TDI jetta that was rear ended. He transplanted the engine into a stick shift AWD Audi TT and its now a biturbo setup
Really like what you did with this ranger it looks really good... bonus points for the exhaust....you should get a jetta TDI dash and modify it to fit... since you can weld and fabricate that would be fairly straight forward that way you could have your tachometer and speedometer.... Just a thought
✏️✏️
Thank you for that idea, ive got a rotten jetta in my yard, and might be getting a 90s ranger next week
as a fan of being different I would drive this thing everyday sweet build
Nice swap. Why would you want the exhaust below your ear?
because i like being a degenerate :)
basically how the ranger was sold here (brazil), with a 2.5/2.8/3.0 turbo diesels
I have a 3L 2014 A6 and 2012 Touareg TDI…..I divide 2k monthly commute miles between the two. Have owned several cars and the one that I want to modify/swap is a cheap high mileage gen 1 raptor (comparable torque) . My XJ and TJ come in a close second. Found a cheap motor and have the shop just need a cheap hooptie…..also open as a third option to gut a cheap Bentley continental GT to convert as a reliable commuter.
Nice unique build bro 😎 👍🏾 big fan of engine swap
Man I Love the Ranger...I have two maybe I will try this thanks for posting
I want to do this in the worst way 😭😭 I love that tdi motor
I really want to do this swap on my 1998 Ranger. I was leaning towards the TD Conversions adapter for an OE (Mazda-made) Ranger V6 2WD 5-speed, but I'm not in love with that transmission after driving them for several years.
I saw they will be coming out with one that matches the small block Ford V8 bell housing, so I'm tempted to wait for that and mate it to a T5 transmission.
What final drive ratio are you running? Mine is currently a 7.5" 3.73 LSD, but I want to find a 4.10 Explorer rear, which would give me 1,900 RPM at 65 MPH with taller tires. It's also 1" wider than the Ranger rear, so I can chop my wheelwells to carry 4x8 sheets flat on the floor with 225s.
I used the TD Conversions adapter running the M5OD-R1HD from a 4.0 95 truck, 2wd. 5th gear 0.79, rear end is a 3.31, but my tires are just shy of 27” tall.
Don't be a follower go with a vr6 swap these are great motors
Notification squad 🔥🔥, we are excited to see you post , happy holidays
Thanks for sharing! Sounds great!
Makes me think to keep my 2006 jetta tdi and 2005 beetle tdi wanted do ute pickup conversion ... But then remember everything brakes constantly. And want the p.o.s's gone
i mean ill take you pos VWs for free.99
Awesome Ranger build!
This thing soumds so badass
That’s badass you got a new sun bud
Then u could put all the rest of the Guage read outs on a tablet mounted in front if the radio and heater Controls and maybe a GPS unit for the speed o
always wanted vw pick up tdi
Your mustache is fine bro
It's really weird it really weird...It's a DIESEL! LOL
The stock numbers that he gives for the Ranger's OE engine are waaaay off... I'm going to assume that it came with the base 2.3 4 banger, and that engine had 143hp and 154lb-ft of torque, which was fairly par for the course as far as base 4 bangers in compact pickups went back in that time period. Sure, those aren't earth-shattering numbers by any measure, but they're a far cry from the "100hp and 120lb-ft" that he says that the engine had. I have respect for the skill, talent and perseverance that he obviously possesses in order to get this swap done, but I can't help but call out such a vast discrepancy.
So if you pull up to a car meet, who you going with? It's an American truck made by a Japanese manufacturer with a European engine
im gonna go with my mom likely
Cool truck 😎
Looks like an Explorer front end?
Love it!!!
So cool!
4 wheel drive on the fly too?
I have to ask what the transmission is?
Does anyone know what adapter and clutch and flywheel setup he is using 1.9 tdi and 1.8t are the same pattern and I really wanna put my built big turbo 1.8t in a ranger now
Whst did he use for a bell housing adapter
Awesome video! I'm planning to do a TDI swap on my 82' BMW 320i. Any thoughts?
Why not go with a n57?
@@LoganC278 I'm just trying to get the car to run and want to keep it affordable if that makes sense. And it would be fuel efficient I think.
@@jesusruiz1081 the fwd engine to rwd chassis will take some thinking a fabricating. But that’s also why I’m here got a nice e46 shell that could use a diesel turbo
funny.... i just picked up a '91 325i, between a PD TDI swap or a k24.... you would def need to either swap transmissions or get an adapter plate made. TD conversions is hypothetically making one for the CD009 out of the 350z, which is likely what i would be using on either swap!
@@walkerchild7414 funny how a good bmw has honda or vw parts with a nissan trans😅
I’m wanting to do the same engine swap but I really don’t know how to start. Got any tips?
Austin Niemela has some great videos on doing the actual swap, as well as 2 full tacoma swaps, thats where i got most of my info from. Highly reccommend taking a look there.
How did you get past emissions?
Amazing. I love Volkswagen diesels, may they RIP. What kind of fuel economy are you seeing from this build? I am curious what you got while towing that Ram work van, as well as your mileage when you aren’t towing anything. Again, very cool build. Definitely liked and subscribed!
I got about 24-26 towing the van, 4th gear around 65mpg at 2800rpm. Unloaded I get between 40-45, usually closer to 40 from pressing the fun pedal too much!!!
@@walkerchild7414 bro that thing is sweet…Definitely motivated me some more to swap my ‘86 XJ
@@chrisguillen1495 pitter patter bud! its a great swap and i know you are going to enjoy it!!
@@walkerchild7414 You straight up just convinced me to do a diz swap into my 99 ranger. I got MB 300td that is going to become the donor.
Should i reinforce axles, maybe pull em from my old 01 f150 roller? Im just not sure if the stock front would be able to handle that weight.
@@alext8610 You lucky bastard with your 300td lol. I would have done that if i could find one!!! front should be fine, unless you have some big tires like +33", rear i would def do a swap from the f150 for the bigger axle shafts, aftermarket support, and most importantly, friggin' disk brakes on the rear lol!
I had a 97' VW Polo 1.9 SDI (non turbo) about 15 yrs ago. That's the most economical and reliable car that I've ever had. Fuel consumption was between 3.7 - 4.8 litres/100km witch is 63.5 - 49 mpg 👍 And the 49 mpg was when it was -35 below...
Tell Uhaul it's towing a 91' Civic. That's the universal joke at Uhaul.
this is incredible. i own a TDI myself (a 15 Golf, one of the very last VW diesels sold in the US), and i cherish it. i love seeing people putting these small diesel engines in other non-VW vehicles…very cool!
They make a swap kit for a jeep Cherokee xj to fit the tdi vw engine
awesome build i have the same motor swapped into my mk1 rabbit ,
your switch for the pump is that a lift pump to get fuel from the tank ? my tank has bottom feed so i dont rum a pump but wondering if it gives any other benefit
🤷♂️
the stock ranger tank is a top feed so it requires the "lift pump". If you run larger power numbers, its required as the bottom feed doesnt apply enough pressure. id say anything 180+hp probably needs a pump in line
Ford's 3.2 Diesel 5cyl would actually be an insane machine in one of these. What a badass swap with that TDI
I just loved the guys face every time he revved the shit out of it, and then him tryna tell him not to without actually telling him.
just a tad worried about the 300k miles+ timing belt!
I was like, it's a diesel, not a miata 💀💀 He even told him the powerband lol
That turbo and exhaust sounds pretty good. The main thing that turns me off from TDIs is the anemic sound
Just gotta straight pipe em and they sound sweet
OM 605
I’d rather have the anemic sound then loud exhaust of those trying to compensate.
@@robertt9342 not the loudness that matters
@@robertt9342 they arent that loud straight piped, the turbo quiets it down. now the turbo noises on the other hand, are semi loud
TDIs are actually rev happy if you strap a 3.0 TDI turbo on them :)
Don’t worry, one will be coming soon!!!
👏👍
Another option is a holset waste gate turbo. An HE200 (or HE211, HE221) is legit. I have one running 30lbs of boost on my ALH with a manual boost controller. I got fed up with VNT turbos after dealing with an overboosting 2056 from a sprinter van. Anyway, nice build build man!
@@stevehitch581 amen brotha you know what’s up hope that engine is treating you fairly keep her clean she’ll last forever
GTB2260
Can you imagine a world where shit like this is
illegal in the eyes of the EPA
Make sure you sign the RPM ACT
Unfortunately its illegal in most states now, i couldnt register it in colorado where i lived because it wouldnt pass their emmissions because its not a stock motor..... so i moved back to michigan!
Just move to Florida
Anybody have a link/reference to the list [of states not allowing diesel swaps]?
Get a pd130 out a a4 b5. They are longitunal engines and their tuning potential is absolutely crazy. 150 headbolts. ported head. 270cam. and a gtb2260vklr turbo with vaccum conversion. power tdi hf100 injectors plus a good fmic will net you 300+ hp and around 650-680 nm of torque! And it will do this all day. (With forged pistons and rods it will hold 380+ hp with a larger turbo)
Iirc no PD130 made it to the states. Also, i believe that TDI's pistons and rods are forged from the factory
@@jonytube Well. Tbh I've never heard they come forged but you might be correct. It is normal to upgrade the pistons to more heat resistant ones and also stronger rods as they tend to crap themselves at higher hp 350+
But did the US get any of the pd engines ?
@@patrickbernard5458 all tdis came with forged rods :) as for the PD engines, I think ATD and some other PD100 (BEW?), not sure as I'm from your side of the pond
I’m getting E36 vibes when i’m just seeing the front 1/4 of the truck from the side.
My two favourite manufacturers coming together beautifully. You know what they say, if the badge is blue and white, you’ll be alright!
You should look into using the Toyota Prius power steering motor. All you need is 12 volts
That’s like a bass test through my subwoofer at idle😂
You can actually use the Volkswagen powering steering pump with the ranger rack and pinion. Easy to do but why go through all the trouble of an engine swap and not do A/C
I've got a 95 with the old OHV engine, and I've always been thinking about doing something like this.... I'll have to start looking in the VW aisle at the pick and pulls. Thank you for this.
Where the accessory drive belts...why no accessories. Looks like you had tons of room for a power steering pump.
Super cool. I remember back in the 80's cruising Cooper Street in Arlington, Texas seeing the sea of tuned mini trucks. It was a very cool time. Love seeing mini trucks live on. Cheers!
Now this is rad!
look into the volvo electric powersteering pump swap. takes power, ground and an switched ignition source. I put one in my 302 swapped e36. love it.
hi Now what `bout VW 3.oltr v6 Turbo Diesel DID [direct injection ] or the Ford DuraTorque DID or World Ranger 3.oltr or 3,2ltr 5cyl
Both of these double the Hp and Tq you have currently easily
Not.... The 3.5 5 cyl is rated between 200-220 HP and like 345 pounds of torque , I own one, they are great trucks, but they don't double this swap power. And this 1.9 TDI is super reliable.
I own a 2.8 TD ranger too, 2006 model, 114 ho, 134 pounds of torque, now... This swap doubles my engine, and still reliable. I want this swap! My 2.8 TD is all mechanical.. this swap could be a great swap.
I had a b5.5 Passat with the 1.8 turbo I really love that car but literally a day after owning it the whole turbo blue a massive hole in the block.... So $5,000 later and 160,000 mile motor it still would blow the Piston injectors like every couple thousand miles.... Shop will never fix it that car was nothing but a damn headache but I really loved it. And weirdly enough that car was kind of like the diesel it was good down low but after like 5,000 RPMs it's nothing like literally nothing....
I have a 4wd 3.0 TDI Mazda B3000 (International Ford Ranger) and I love it! Such a great little rig, the US really missed out on diesel rangers and Mazda trucks
Stock?
What kind of MPG do you get out of it?
And any guess on what your towing capacity is now?
My husband and I have two diesel Jetta sportswagens and we love them! Best engines ever made!
i saw this thing on fb market place awhile ago almost bought it
Pull that freaking headliner down and either spray it with rubber sound dampener or recover it haha 😂
Sick truck tho!!!
"make cool with what you got" rat fink
The last bulletproof engine from VW
Bruh... you got my wheels turning. Now I want to swap my ranger. I got flat bed ranger on 15s and lowered. Is there any way I can get in contact with you to get a dollar amount on how much this build costed and what I would need to do for it all to work properly? I'd love to have a diesel ranger that's so bad ass.
@tdiswaps has info
Should look at electric steering
There actually was a Ford that came with VW engines from the factory. The Ford Galaxy van.
Initially I wanted to do a 5.0 swap on my ranger. But if someone was able to do this. Id be willing to pay someone to do the swap for me lol
if you have the ability to stuff a 5.0 in a ranger, you can DEFINITLY do a tdi swap. Wiring is easy, plumbing is simple, all you need is a trans adapter and you are good to go!
Out of all the good looking small trucks a Ford Ranger? Come on dude! At least pick the 1992 Ranger those were "fire" ! Just kidding I had a 1985 Nissan 4x4 I wanted to TDI Swap bad and never had time to do it.
Is there a step by step on this process? I'd like to attempt this
Austin Niemela here on youtube has some really good videos on the whole process, hes done 2 tacomas now and everything applies, just have to alter things for the ranger side.
In the first 15 seconds of your video, there is reference to God at least 4 times. Jesus,Holy,Holy,God.
I’m putting a 2.1L Stroker 1.8T into my ‘91 S10 but down the road my friend said he’d like to purchase that Stroker off of me eventually for his Jetta. If he ever does buy it off me, I’ll most definitely switch over to the TDI instead of the little gasser.
some people here commenting on ford diesel how many do you know thete are in Europe a Ford Maverick suv that's really a rebadged Nissan Terrano td , in S.America plenty of ford Rangers 2.5TD Maxion diesel engine also in Europe Ford cars powered by Peugeot TD engines and before that rebaged VW Sharan as Ford Alhambra 1.9TDI , I have been a car guy for 60 years and have travelled half of this world
Super cool to see ! It took me the first 10 seconds to realize you guys are in Rochester mi! Super local to me which is so sweet , I’d like to see this out sometime
I've got a whole 2006 BRM Jetta and the parts to fully rebuild it in south Carolina, if anyone wants everything. I just want what it cost me and can give you receipt copies. The car is drivable to get home. Already stand alone tuned Malone stage 1 for a Ford Ranger.
My wife was wrecked in her 2013 CJAA wagon, so I bought a parts car to fix hers, and am using the motor out of it for my ranger swap. The goal is to have the same maintenance parts between our two cars.
Got a old 1980s ford ranger 4x4 perfect body motor bad want to do this swap. I have a Volkswagen diesel jetta just need a guide. Once it's bolted in I want to do a mechanical vp44 from a 4bt cummings making it direct mechanical injection to rid the electronic want mechanical.
Sorry but in a jeep Cherokee I will always chose the 4.0 over anything. It makes more power and torque than the 1.9. Maybe its thirstier but that's the engine it came with. If you're putting a 1.9 in a jeep you need to look at yourself in the mirror.
The power steering is pretty easy to hook up to the VW pump.
stock rack was depowered by previous owner, but electric power steering is coming soon!.....ish
Thank you. Happy to see 1.9 in a ranger. Im Doing it
Surely it’s faster than the crappy 2.3l 4cyl. I driven a couple of them. They don’t have enough power to get out of their own way.
I once had an old 1986 Ranger with a Isuzu i-mark diesel engine swapped into it. It was loud but it was a lot of fun.
You keep revving it out as he's telling you that Diesel's make power down low. Cognitive dysfunction?
This is sick
Please show us more about that cruise control. I've been thinking how to make a cruise control for my ranger but nothing comes up
"It's a diesel, so its powerband is tops 3100"... reviewer proceeds to Rev the piss out of it 😂😂😂
Someone should make a bad ass TDI swapped ranger crawler. I could imagine it
That's really cool. I never understood why Ford stuck all those under powered motors in the rangers.
This is a KP39 for the BEW 1.9 TDI… the 06 BV39 turbo is top mounted
People that say pro tip are not a pro at anything and makes them look like a weeness! Stop saying it, it is dumb! Nice truck though!
You’re my hero! Always wanted to do this to my Mighty Max when I had it. Maybe some day in the future lol
lol stock 4 cyl ranger is 145hp dont be that mean
