  • Unfortunately the audio and video isn't great but hopefully it gives you some insights into the ute from a drivers view.

I have had a Cannon X for a few months. Dislikes include jittery suspension. It seems something of a Chinese thing but the cars they produce never have good rebound damping control on the suspension. Good to drive on really smooth roads or slow really bumpy roads but bad on most Australian single lane roads and highways. Spring rates are okay but shockers are a future after market change item.
The Cannon Utes don’t have a courtesy light in the back. The front light doesn’t shine in the rear seat so getting items out at night can be problematic.
Major dislike, the Lane Keep Assist comes on every time the car is started and you have to go into the menu to switch it off. Should be off until you need it.
Electronic dash is confusing and not as good to use as the analogue dash in the L.
Heated seats are nice but there is no indication they are on and they don’t go off when you turn the car off. I have had a roasted bum after the wife used the Ute and I didn’t know why my crotch was burning for a few minutes until I realised it was a seat issue. 🥵😳
There is a weird fuel connection piece which sits lower than the chassis rail in the mid point of the car. It’s just begging to be bent during 4wd manoeuvres.
Not enough tie down points in the tub.
Likes, engine is fairly smooth for diesel and much better than expected on highway. I think 8 speed ZF has a bit to do with it.
Yep it has turbo lag but I found if you drive in ‘sport mode’ around town you don’t notice it so much.
The dash looks nice and the touchscreen is as fast as any I have used on other vehicles. The seats are comfortable in the leather but as I am on a farm I have seat covers on them.
It tows much better than expected but if you don’t want it hunt up and down through gears use either ‘economy mode’ and use accelerator to keep up pace in cruise because when in economy mode it will slow down to 15 to 20 km/h slower than what you set on any rises or hills and won’t pick up the pace, even on flat roads for a long time. Alternatively use manual and paddle shifters if it’s a heavy load. ( the Ranger with the 10 speed does this too)
Tub is large and easy to use. Soft lowering tail gate and steps are a god send. Should be in all utes.
Headlights are good, tail lights are great.
Having to put on seat belt in drivers seat is probably a safe idea but on one part of my farm I have to open 4 gates in a row about 10 metres apart. So get out, open the gate, get back in, put seat belt on, move 5 metres, get out, shut gate, move 10 metres, repeat. Pain in the err…grass.
Room in front and back is excellent. I’ve driven a few utes recently including new BT50, Triton, Amarok, Ranger and none are as good. Amarok is a great Ute to drive but kids in the back need either shortened legs or rubber hips to sit comfortably in the back AND NO REAR SEAT AIRBAGS!1 in a 2021 car?
. I figure my children are worth more than any Amarok, so I had to have rear air bags.
Centre airbags in front seats of GWM are a great idea.
Paint, panel gaps and general fit and finish is very good. By Ute standards. The 2021 BT 50 was no better finished and barely any better to drive than a 2007 one. I compared them back to back. Most utes have what can only be described as cheap and sort of cheerful dash, fit and finish. (To be fair, paint finish on BT50 is excellent) Hilux paint is pretty good too. (Great Urban Myth: Hilux is most reliable of all utes. It’s used exclusively in mines. It isn’t and isn’t. Mines buy large lots at best price. All poverty packs. They don’t care whose. Cheapest is best. How did Toyota get their reputation? Toyota spent more on marketing than next 5 brands combined. It worked. I’ve had And used various Toyota’s over the years in remote areas. Nice to drive, bloody expensive to repair and maintain)
GWM Wheels and tyres are good looking, good quality and handle pretty well. For a Ute.
The various configurations of the back seats and the room underneath them are practical. Most utes are not.
I didn’t paint the grill black to mask its size and in your face chrome, but I did do some judicious use of black 3m striping to break up the outline by taping the grill bars which makes each look like two bars instead one large one. I narrowed the top grill bar by taping where it joins bonnet by about 25mm. Narrows it and makes it look much thinner. Basically it’s about breaking up the bulky lines without drawing attention to the lines you add to it.
I have found that as it has broken in over the 5,000 kms I have driven it I have come to quite like it and sometimes use it as the town car to do shopping or pick up kids even when my Kia Sorrento GT line is available. (Wife’s car now) The utes size makes it difficult to park, especially ranking car parks where it barely fits some times but outside of town, it’s quite nice to cruise along in. I would not recommend it as the sole transport for a family living in a city but as a second vehicle in regional areas, a tradesman or primary industry vehicle it is unbeatable for the price.
All that remains to be seen is it’s reliability. Should be okay, most is fairly old proven tech, ie ZF gearbox, Borg Warner transfer case, Isuzu chassis, Steering copied from Toyota and a fairly tried and proven engine. The only question mark really is the electronics which should be okay as GWM has been building a lot of cars in recent years.
Now if they can just fix that Lane Keep Assist issues and stop it coming on every time the Ute starts.
Note I didn’t once say, ‘good value for money’. It’s a given at the price.

GWM tune their suspension for Chinese roads, which are generally excellent. They should invest more in localization. What works in China doesn't always translate elsewhere. The lack of cupholders in the rear and reach adjustments for the steering wheel are prime examples.

In software engineering, there is unit test where each unit of function get tested, like you said engine, gearbox etc etc, they will probably work fine within the unit test. There is also an integration test, which test how all components work together, I think there is a bit of catch up job for them to do.

Thanks Chris for the kind words and the subscribe. I just completed my first "road trip" of 800kms and it out performed my expectations. I'm starting to wonder if it really is 120kw and 400nm as I gobbled up a Ford Raptor yesterday. Whenever I see/experience something that isn't as I'd hoped in the car I just remember it is $30k less than my Amarok was knew and then smile.

Great video. Very informative. I was seriously considering one until I drove my mates…though still like them. 1. The accelerator pedal is very touchy at low speeds. 2. The Ute is completely different when towing. We had a 2t caravan, gear in the back and four adults. It still did ok, but the fuel economy decreased by 30-35% and 3. when towing, the gear changes up/down are insane. It never stops. My mate is still happy and hoping a fix comes for the touchy pedal. If you tow a lot, I wouldn’t pick this.

Yeah, I've not towed anything yet so that will be the big test. I've done my first 1000km road trip in it and am still very positive overall.

Yeah, hopefully these help others who like me thought about it for months with some reservation. I mount my phone to the right of the steering wheel on top of the dash and whilst you can't really see it on the videos I have a cable that is wrapped up along the underneath of the drivers well to the phone which I then plug into my phone. The google maps is my go to map.

Does anyone know how to keep your digital speed display up without lane departure and cruse control radar alerts always popping up? You always have to press OK for it to go away only for an alert to pop up again every 10 seconds later. Very annoying.
