2019 Mustang GT PP2 vs Camaro SS 1LE // Battle Of The Track Packs

  • James and Thomas take the new 2019 Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack 2 (PP2) and pit it against the Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE. They are price-matched, and both V8 rear wheel drive powerhouses. They've also been given the 'track treatment' by their manufacturers. The boys explore the cars driving dynamics and what they are like to live with every day. Can visibility of the and icon of the Mustang compete with the Camaro's performance offerings? Exterior and interior styling comparisons help figure out which one takes it in the looks department, and the back roads do the rest. Watch to see the outcome. SUBSCRIBE!

Not a daily driver for me so it’s ok. The only time I have issues is backing up, tight areas with curbs, and looking out my 4 or 5 through that tiny window. Normal lane changes are easy.

They compared a track car against the non track car, if they ran the mustang 350R against this car it's car for car, and that GT350R would be a better match to Chevy's track car and we ALL know who boss car for car, it's the GT350R in this case. But if you want Chevrolet to win something you must pit a modified or specifically spec track car against upgraded standard GT, enough said?
Or do we take a fiberglass 2 seater (Corvette) against a GT 350 as well in which in most aspects the GT wins, even in a straight line. If they went GT 500 against the ZL1 Vette, it's GT 500 all day? Too much said.
If you knew cars the Vette was created to compete against Ford's two seat with a monster V8, now hear this, it was the " Thunder " bird, in that case Thunderbird wins too, because the other TWO seater V8, the 426 and 427 Cobra would dominate anything and was the fastest production car ever made until release of Jaguar's XJ220 about 1989. So let's keep the apples with apples. The GT 500 beating a Vette is extraordinary because again a 4 seater V8 against a two seat V8 and it's fiberglass too, so put that in enthusiast pipes and smoke it.

I have an ‘18 1LE. It’s an absolute dream to drive. I’ve owned Mustangs, Porche’s and various other sports cars but this out paces them all. Granted I’ve made some small performance mods since new but even stock it’s a tremendous bargain. The Tremec is rated for 700ftlbs of torque as is. Also, I’m so tired of people commenting about the visibility. Next time you see someone with a Camaro ask them about it. It’s not horrendous. You just learn to look around more. I can’t say from experience but I bet it’s about the same as a Lamborghini or some Ferrari’s but you don’t hear auto journalists whining about it in those cars. After rebates and a negotiated sale price, I paid $47,250 for a 2SS 1LE. Where in the world can you get another new car with stats to match?

Same like you I owned a Porsche 911 Carrera, '11 Mustang GT, '14 Camaro ZL1, Corvette C7 Stingray Z51 and now my 6th gen Camaro SS. GM raised the bar in performance compared to my previous cars. My preferred one in this order:
      1.- 6th gen Camaro SS
      2.- 5th gen Camaros ZL1
      3.- '11 Mustang GT 5.0 track pack
I hated both my Porsche and Corvette, they were very unreliable.👎

    ‘87 GT
    ‘03 Mach 1
    ‘11 GT500 SVTPP (traded a ‘08 M3 on it...worst decision I ever made in cars)
I drove the ‘18 2SS 1LE and the car won me over...it’s really a great car and the 2SS has blind spot monitoring that really mitigates any visual issues while using it as a daily driver. It’s such an awesome car, I highly encourage at least a look at these special cars before you plop down your hard earn $ for some ridiculous brand loyalty...you may miss out on a great ride.
I just drove the 1LE 850 miles from North Louisiana to Florida with my 11 yr old daughter (she LOVES the car) and it did wonderful all while getting 25.4 mpg...I couldn’t be more pleased with the car.

However in every other situation I prefer the mustang, it’s ride is nicer, the visibility is better, I like the look better and I like the sound better. As a long time Mustang guy, having owned five of them, I can tell you the Camaro 1LE is the better car, hands down. It's basically a Vette with rear seating for very small children. Sick baby blue wrap on the comparison car, but I'd go all black for a 1LE. The '18 looks amazing in black.

Austin Powers - I’ve driven both PP2 and 1le there isn’t a difference that big to make a claim like its “hands down the better car” without pushing both cars to their limits. And there actually isn’t a difference at all driving on the street except for feeling like your sitting inside a tank in the camaro because the visibility is absolute trash. And the Mustang you feel every bump on the road with those massive tires. Other than straight line speed is up to the skill of the driver and on the track there are too many variables to say which one would be quicker. So yeah I think the hands down comment is 100% bullshit

leeleelee I just sold my GT-350 because it was the most overhyped car around. The vibration of the flat plane crank Voodoo engine was horrible and would rattle your fillings loose and it had no bottom end. It tramlines over every road surface and the fits and finish on the exterior were abysmal. After borrowing a 1LE for the weekend, I knew which was the better car...the Camaro.

Revealing comparison of these two powerhouses. You really got me with the way you go about presenting...entertaining, personal, humorous and informative. I actually like the both of them; but maybe I'd give it to the Mustang - this iconic styling and the very typical exhaust note...you can always tell it's a Mustang that's coming or cruising by, not only a (great) V8. Addiction and cure at the same time as Coyote or Voodoo.
    Addendum:
As overall package, I now consider the Camaro in (2)SS 1LE trim the best offer. Quite a few reasons for it, the price tag only adding to it. The iconic status of the Mustang stays untouched.

@@zacharytrull4665 that's not his point. He's saying that calling the GT a "gt car" instead of a sports car is completely incorrect. Having driven one, I agree. It overheated because the real "track pack" of the Mustangs are the gt350 and gt350r with all the extra coolers that also come with the 1le. To keep costs down, the GTs don't come with those. A strange decision by Ford to include slicks on that package instead of chassis stiffening, electronic diff, and all kinds of cooling since only very few buyers would ever purchase a pp2. I guess they didn't want it to compete with the gt350 and hurt it's sales.

People always talk about the stiffness of the camaro vs. the mustang. The reason why Camaros are so stiff is because they are really Corvettes with a Camaro body. That's just an advantage they will probably always have over the mustang.

Thank you for testing a Mustang PP2 no one else has done it as of yet. IMO, I would take the PP2 over the GT 350 just because other then the track there aren't too many places you can wring one out. Get some sticky summer tires like others are going and have at thee.
Early 80s Corvette did something similar as with the Camaro. It was 4+3 and would skip a gear to save gas.

I just checked out a low miles 2019 Mustang GT PP2 last weekend. What a beautiful car!! Not really in the market right now, but to me this is the next best thing to a new GT-350. Has some of the same features, but if you aren’t tracking the car, you can save $10k and get this. And 460 hp is plenty for any public road!

  • @jmm1174

I think that the Mustang PP1 is better as a daily driver compared to the PP2 because their cup tires would hardly last 5K miles. Either way at the track the Camaro SS1LE with is regular summer tires would beat the Mustang because the Alpha platform chassis has superior handling.

Yeah, Ford doesn't quite have the chassis engineering chops that GM does, so they kinda cheated by throwing track tires on a street car. Sport Cup 2s aren't in line with the Mustangs price and daily drivier usability, and next to nobody will replace the Michelins every 5K. It's a magazine racer.

Great review. I shopped 1SS vs PP1 and my takeaways where that the SS felt faster and had a better driving position, and felt screwed together tighter than the Mustang, but the Mustang was very close and actually would have been my choice because it was cheaper and had more back seat space.

@@Raven77844 I didn't want to care about backseat space, but with these two cars, my kids fit in the Mustang and didn't fit in the Camaro. The seemingly small difference in space became a big difference because of that, and while the Camaro was faster, I don't think it was $5k faster, which was the difference based on the deals I was able to get at the time.
