If you want to go fast in racing games, learning momentum driving is critical. Not only is it key to driving slow cars fast, but it’s also extremely fun and rewarding in sim racing. This is how to drive slow cars vs fast cars.
In beefy, powerful cars that don’t turn so well, it's typically faster to sacrifice cornering speed to increase your turning ability, allowing you to easily put the power down much sooner. This is point and shoot driving. Otherwise known as slow in, fast out.
However, in cars that don't have the power to accelerate out of a corner like a bullet, we need a different style of driving, focused on carrying our momentum through the turn. Or, medium fast in and out.
There are three main techniques to momentum driving. Gearing, Braking and Throttleing
Let's start with gearing.
On this corner, with point and shoot you'd usually shift down into third, allowing you to rotate the car easier through the turn, but sacrificing mid corner speed. Then you use your power to regain your lost speed whilst exiting the turn.
In a slower, momentum based car,, we'd turn in much sooner and leave it in fourth gear. The earlier turn in means we need less steering input, resulting in scrubbing off less speed. And staying in gear us to carry more momentum and build up our revs throughout the turn for the following straight. The speed you carry through the turn becomes your corner exit speed.
Momentum and point and shoot cornering styles are at about the same pace with equal drivers. But with this, you might embarrass someone in a much faster car that’s even slightly worse than you.
If you want to double the embarrassment, you'll need to learn momentum braking.* With a point and shoot style, you’ll be braking in a straight line a lot of the time. But with momentum driving, we actually need to brake whilst cornering, this is called trailing the brakes.
Not only does it help the car turn into the corner at higher speeds, by loading the steering wheels with weight. But, it also allows us to brake much later than usual, because we’re blending our braking and steering.
Whilst trail braking, i want you to imagine a piece of string tied to your steering wheel and your brake pedal. As you turn the wheel, less braking action is available. And if you do too much braking and steering at the same time, you’ll break the string, as well as your car, probably.
And if you want to TRIPLE the embarrassment of the blokes with all the gear but no idea, listen up. Because im going to tell you how to use your throttle whilst momentum driving. The jist of it is: FULL THROTTLE AT ALL TIMES BABY.

Takumi after beating everyone in a fast car with an 86:
Pretty much
Fast in fast out
Everyones asleep vs takumi lol
There were a few opponents that should have destroyed Taco meat sadly. The GodHand one still irritates me, but still love Taco meat.
I guess you could argue takumi kinda does momentum driving while drifting but I wish they showed him learning grip driving as I feel they hinted at it heavily towards the end. Especially with the wrx looming.
I love driving slow cars in simulators
It's really fun to just control your momentum through the turns
This is what the fools complaining about it being "too easy to get a good car" in Forza don't understand
Simulators? I'm doing it IRL, with an Elantra '09, pushing it to its limits
i like it because it's relatable to me. super cars don't feel real to me because i never driven one hard in real life. so i have zero connection to it. i hate super cars in racing games. for me, it's either "slowish" cars (a evo X being a perfect example) or actual race cars. in-between sucks. and the faster they are, the worse they suck. hypercars being the worst.
@@djvic4u I'm currently using my Golf V well beyond what it was designed for. I love it
and once you swap back to your actual car the switch doesn't feel so jarring
1:59 That's an odd place for a brake pedal.
thought that as well, but probably easier to move with the hand for filming
LOL! The same principle goes for accelerating as well... Less turn on the wheel for more acceleration
these videos are only 2 minutes long but hold hours of information.
it's got to be done when the average youtube viewer has a 10 second attention span xd
@@TSRB goes to show it works pretty well. I mean you see the video is about 3 minutes long and you click on it cuz why not. Especially knowing that this guy (you) makes quality content. I know all of these stuff shown in the video but i still watch it cause y e s.
@@TSRB not to mention ive never seen other channels point these importances of driving out. Your channel is quite unique in a way :D
@@TSRB true that bro
You just showed up in my feed randomly and while not a sim or even a sim-cade racer, all these videos of yours are incredibly informative and highly engaging. All of the info is extremely useful and the next time I hit the track in any racing game, I'm going to be thinking about all of the tips in this and the other videos from your channel.
You've got my sub, keep it up!
most of this stuff applys to real life driving also.
ive never really driven a real car.
but i can tell people are over steering or under steering in their vehicle.
@@beatles42ohgg94 Heh, guess I'll keep in mind all of this all the time; could save my hide in the future if a situation were to ever arise where I need excellent control over my car
the representation of the string attached to the steering wheel and the pedals is very clever, never seen the idea being put this way!!
This is another level of content, be either editing, information and enjoyment, keep it going, you're awesome!
slow cars will forever reign supreme. I dont want to gap everybody, i wanna race em, and if it takes a 209hp civic to do it thats what i drive
My first sim race series is in first gen Honda fits/jazz. Dialing in suspension really helps maximize tire contact which means more speed! Most of the time we just need a slight lift off the throttle to give the car some lift off oversteer and then is back to full throttle
Sounds like a lot of fun!
Been following for a week and i already love your content!
What a lovely and informative video, but then you throw in blue haze by jazz cartel in the background?
Immaculate dnb taste as well. Subbed!
The fact that you give so much information about cornering in only 2 mins is INSASE! Thats why the video was in my youtube reccomended section
It’s nice seeing you use a Honda Civic for this video, I don’t have asseto, nor any racing sims, or even a PC but I do ha w a Honda jazz. Watching this video I can relate to a lot of these techniques from my time “tracking” my car up the local hills and it’s nice to see how realistic racing sims have become
small Hondas are perfect for this type of driving, put some sticky rubber on them and they are a ton of fun and can surprise many more expensive machines with their handling capabilities
Honda Jazz is perfect for this kind of driving. Realistically people aren't going use all of their power in a powerful car - since speeds well above 100kph are just kind of dangerous.
Jazz is small so easy to place with accurate steering, responsive enough chassis and just enough power for momentum driving at 100-120kph max in hills. It also has safe handling at the limit making it easier to exploit those limits with confidence unlike say someone in technically better RWD cars.
I love pushing my Fit and chasing cars with 2-3x the horsepower
I love how rewarding slower racing can be but also how much closer it tends to be since you’re not relying on downforce etc, even if someone makes a small ish mistake they don’t have to be out of the race necessarily
I’m so glad this high quality sim racing Channel exists
that string /grip analogy is brilliant nice vid
Understood everthing the first time watching, thanks for explaining it quick and easy!
And this is what Gran Turismo tried to teach you during the license tests. I just learn how to do momentum driving and it makes me appreciate slower cars even more. You don’t need a stupid fast car to have fun driving, you just need to be a better driver.
The noise coming from the tires is a good way to gauge you level of traction and the limit you can push. Ideally, you should be just on the cusp of your tires squeeling. Squeeling is indicative of wheel slip and slide and both those things do not make for the fastest possible cornering as your car is sliding outward slightly (increasing the radius of your turn this the distance your car has to travel) and the loss of grip lowers your braking and power effectiveness which will further slow you down. Tires must be stuck to the road at all times for maximum effectiveness. Regardless of technique, the driver who knows how to maintain the most grip with their tires will be the fastest.
I love these style of videos but I have a question, when are the more longer format videos coming back?
love your videos, man. entertaining and super irnformative
thanks!
Also slower cars usually have thinner tires. So turning sooner really helps.
Man ! I love being a member 🏆✨. TSRB hitting Bangers on bangers . How do you come up with such excellent content 🙌
Hey, great video! This is some really usefull information! Could you please tell me what track mod this is?
Ahahah I love the throttling sound at 0:47. Amazing touch
Good tutorial!
Incredible song choices
you accurately described my daily comute to work!
I have an EP3 irl and love it so much
I have a 2017 civic si irl. That car has taught me so damn much about carrying speed....its an underrated drivers car tbh
very helpful. love to drive na hondas
I do something like this. I drive fast cars slow. Cornering is usually approached with a slow in slow through and slow out mindset. I get lots of trail braking practie this way
I started sim official because of your videos I want to thankyou as now I have a purpose to work hard for skill to the roof
The trail braking technique, I never knew it actually exist XD, I thought I'm the only one doing it in racing games probably because I rarely play multiplayer and AI doesn't do that
brooo the editing!
*sound of all the Altima drivers furiously taking notes*
I'm doing a Daihatsu Midget only run in TXRD2, and it's utterly brutal. Your videos have given me a lot of techniques to try out to help me.
As a Corsa driver, I can definitely relate to this style of driving much more lol. I rely so much on momentum that if I can't get up a hill going at least 30mph, I have to come to a complete stop, then ride the clutch and go up at 1-3mph. Which is why it really pisses me off when people decide to brake uphill or ride their bikes uphill in a 60 zone.
Will definitely try this in my 90hp Audi 80
The 82 rabbit is ready to run
In the section where you talk about embarassing a fast car in a shitbox, I remembered a story of mine.
I never considered myself as being a "Great" driver, but I like to think that I'm good to some extent.
The story:
I once joined a public lobby on I don't even remember what modded track, I chose the MX-5. Yeah... The puny lil' Miata MX-5. I finished practice, not meeting anyone and on the starting grid in the actual race now, I saw 3 Lamborghini Huracans, 2 Ferrari 458 GT3-s and an F1 car mainly. I think there were porschs too, but that is besides the point. I started 5th place in about 10-13 racers. The F1 in first, he launched it, all the big boys near me. One Lamborghini in particular, got close and personal. He was super agressive, and kept attacking me. By the second corner he attempted to overtake me like 5 times, so I let him be. I managed to overtake him a few corners later, and byy the end of the race, I left him in the dust with about 2.3 seconds of distance between us. He kept trying to beat me, but I put up quite the fight. He even made it clear he was hunting my little MX-5 in the chat. He spun me out the second race but I still won lol.
Can do this as good as possible irl with my car, but in the sim, I lack of precise and small inputs
hi! great video as always! 1 question, does this work with all car drivetrains? or is it for RWD and AWD only?
FWD you mong.
@@trabant3060 man, I gave 2 options and I am still wrong hahahaha
Actually helped me beat a R34 in MR:T two times in an AE111, thank you
as someone who mostly plays rally games, i was wondering why ai drivers seemed to brake so early lol, this is just how i race all the time
the names of the driving/cornering styles sound like rally pacenotes
thank you bro im stuck in the novice series 1 in assetto corsa and i just recently got a wheel. ty. still coming last :(
You'll get there
What’s cool is that my friend made that civic mod 😅
if anybody wants to know the background music in the start (which is in a very low volume) is the Miss you from Oliver Tree and other composer that i forgot the name. pretty banger ngl (0:00 to 0:44)
they stole the remix from Southstar though, so listen to his version instead
@@TSRB lets be honest, both versions looks good
I don't know how to do any of those except the throttling bit
The gist of it is,"FULL THROTTLE ALL TIMES BABYY, YEAHHHHH", dying rn😂
In Ireland we have the Backroad Bandits - Driving slow cars fast
What is the first song that you used in the video?
What momentum car says to me after each and every corner ... "C'mon, just a bit faster next time!" ;)
I swear I see a more cursed thumbnail each time than the last.
Yeah, this one was downright criminal.
Aight imma tell you
After you told how to drift fwd now I swing civic at every corner available in game
Please make a full video of how to drive like a pro, it would be helpful
just watch all of these videos back-to-back
Lately I've been racing B class on forza, and although i tried so many cars, rwd, awd, high hp, the car I've been winning the most races in is a CRX SiR, a fwd, bit less power than the average B class car, so u have shit launching, somewhat slow acceleration, but lemme tell ya, in corners, its so fucking fast, full throttling through corners is so fun too
With the string brake analogy he says "attached to your brake pedal" but im pretty sure thats the accelerator pedal its attached to in the video... which one is actually meant?
I watched this only because you've used 7th gen civic in red, and I own one, so I tried to image how would I take those corners with my 90HP engine.
I love this video because my track car is a Honda fit/jazz
oh it's a civic
yeah they look similar
I'm glad to see everything I learned while driving my 90hp Peugeot on small roads is actually true.
On chicanes your car will most likely lack the power to actually require you to brake on the second and third corner, and your G will be lower than what your maximum grip can handle. Which means you have to carry this speed through the corner by staying on the throttle, which changes the balance of your car compared to what you would have experienced on a fast one.
My favorite kind of driving!
it do be fun
typer ep3 is my car in real life and I think there are a lot of slower cars🤣 but I was amused to see it on video. by the way, in the real world, the typer can keep up with much more powerful and expensive cars
It's roughly the same speed and acceleration as my BMW Z4, and it definitely can't keep up with more powerful and expensive cars. Unless the guy in the faster car is a bad driver, and you're taking corners like I said in the video.
I drive a Saturn Sl2. Can confirm, full throttle at all times.
bro that dolfin boy
"Slow down? We don't do that here"
-Me when that one guy with a camaro ss went for a drive with me in my 116 hp audi
Gran turismo , Driving Licences was the best teacher
I learned the same way lmao it was surprising to see the results after two weeks of trying to get perfect score in all challenges twice (I have two psp and I play gran turismo in both of them, dunno why)
@@umrasangus ahhh nostalgic childhood times
what song was in the starting of the video?
This is just the way I've always driven in games, hold that throttle and give er at all costs
What is the song playing in the background through the first half of the video?
Also what is the second song? Sounds like some great breakcore
thanks to you I was able to improve my lap time around 22 seconds in 62km long circuit what means I manage to do it under 14 min 50 sec
P. S. the track isn't real and the game is not a simulator but it still helps me though
Damn what track is 62 km long 💀

@@TSRB thank you :")))
Does this work irl@
Have to try it real-world tomorrow in my rocket Peugeot 406 kombi 110hp shitbox 😂😂
I wish I could full throttle in my car through corners...... it's not that it's powerful, but the traction control will shit itself and brake, making the back step out of line. Not a nice feeling to experience
Mw2 quickscope sound effects 🤣

Where i can get this Honda civic ep3 mod for asetto corsa?
Momentum driving can be done with a fast car too.
The secret to driving slow cars fast is to make them faster with more power
Im curious why some engineer never built a fast car but also built the handling so its better turn
If you're talking about street cars, there are some cars out there that have both power and surprisingly low weight, allowing for better handling, like a Praga or a Lotus. However, for the most part, its because at that point, those cars serve more as a status symbol, so handling never becomes important. Luxurious accessories and heavy engines are emphasized more, but they add weight, which doesn't help handling. Bummer honestly
Intro song name?
what if you do this with a fast car?
Fast car also unpredictably spin out expecially the car was RWD. So that depends driver skill
Do you actually have the brake pedal on the right?
no but the same theory applies to the brake and accelerator
No half sends
man, the thumbnails these days feel like shitposts but for educational videos
You strung the steering wheel to the accelerator pedal...
What if you just drove the Corvette like that?
I can't get it with the gt86 or ae86
Slow cars be like: full Leroooooy Jenkins mode
the Type R is not as slow as my EP2
driving my car in real life ive embarrased bmw m4s forester xts ss commodores falcons etc, just because i know how to carry speed through a corner (and a bit of setup of course)
