hot tip, always loosen that crank bolt with the timing belt still in place. This eliminates any chance of a slip up that could damage the lifters or valves. Same goes for tightening the new bolt. Snug it, install the belt then finish the tightening sequence.
wish I'd known that before my 22re valve crunch just a couple grand mistake
I don't own a Toyota or a Volkswagen but I watch these videos like I'm gonna go into my garage right after this and build my own 🤣🤣 love the videos bro! Please keep them coming
Thanks man!
Same here man lol
@@austinniemela Do you recommend this or the ALH for an engine swap. Curious to here the pros and cons.
I love the attention to detail you have. Great work!
Thank you very much!
Thats a big job, not for the faint hearted
Looking forward to this engine coming together. I've been planning a BHW build/swap for a long time.
I'm interested to see how this goes. I'm an ALH fan. I'm especially interested to see the efficiency compared to the other.
I love how crisp all the bolts break free in your videos. When ever I work in my garage it seems the crank a bolt and it snaps in half 😆
My 2005 tdi ran for 460.000 miles when I sold it 2 years ago very smooth engine.
Never seen that balance shaft stuff before. Nice install of replacement components. Enjoying each vid!
Thanks 👍
Another interesting video!
I like your style of putting the content together.
Just the right amount of commentary with the information on what and why you do things.
Cheers from Sydney Australia

So sweet and coming along great. I am also a Tacoma and VW TDI owner doing my own mechanical work so this channel is pretty much my favorite right now! If I lived up near you I would probably be trying to hang out and help as much as possible haha 🍻
That a boy I really like seeing you us your head for for something other than a hat rack. Comen sense most people wouldn't think to rotate the motor ( gravity) getting more imprest the more I watch. I've made mistakes when I was younger and as I was watching I said to myself I really hope he rotates that motor ,well done grasshopper lol.👍👍
Put grease on the treads for the puller no binding, also on the tap for cases like that the metal will stay on the tap trapped in the grease
This seems like it will work good
You make it all look so easy, while I'm fighting some stupid quick disconnect Ford fuel lines.
coming together really really nice!
PD’s ftw
Putting some grease on the drill and the tap will help keep most of the shavings under control too.
Luxury or no luxury always be proud of your brand and try working to improve. I love luxurious lifestyles. All thanks to crypto I just got my first Lamborghini 💝. My advice to y'all invest in cryptocurrency or gold.
Despite the economic crisis it's still a good time to invest in Gold and Crypto
Investing in Crypto now is very cool now especially with the current rise in the market now
Stock are good too
Stock are good but crypto is better
I wanted to trade Crypto but got confused by the fluctuations in price
Ahhh, I just did this last week... Took me 2 weekends :)... Very annoying to do it while on the car still but eazy once its out :) Great video!
Awesome video! I want to learn how to tear down/build an engine. learn a lot from watching you and other youtubers who do swaps/tear downs. Keep it up
Glad to help
Incredibly fascinating stuff!!! Pump these vids out as much as you can haha
BMH turbo swap cost vid is a must! Also a dino pulls or at least torque and hp
Hell yeah another awesome build coming together. Stoked
Was waiting to see the claw hammer beating the gear on. JK nice work bud. 👍👍👍👍
Clean shaven and soul patch!!! Must have had a date night!!!
Hey Austin, love the content, just wondering why you don't put Toyota turbo diesel (Hilux or Prado engines)in your engine swaps? Did I miss an episode?
I said the same thing last episode, and maybe bigger turbo or compound turbos.
From what I understand those engines are hard to get a hold of in the US. Diesel toys used to swap the D4d Toyota turbo diesels into trucks here in the USA and had to switch to an a630 EcoDiesel because the Toyotas became impossible to get a hold of (they have to be imported)
Great attention to detail👍
This is by far my most interesting series on RUclips for me right now. I have the same year truck and have been considering this exact swap for about a year. Two questions I have at this point; Is there anything you have to do to maintain/adjust oil pressure? I don't have experience with the TDI but I know the 2.0l gas motor incorporates the oil pressure regulator into the oil pump/balance shaft assembly and deleting that requires an external oil pressure regulator. Probably different on the TDI but thought I'd ask. Second, if I ever attempt my swap I'd like to keep the 340 auto transmission. What are your opinions why this might not be a good idea or not work as well. My knees are getting bad at my age and I dislike working the clutch anymore and I don't want to tackle the trans swap at the same time too. Keep up the great work. *funny how intrusive facebook and google are in our lives- I was searching market place for a donor car and yours was near the top of the list- and you're three thousand miles away from me. Obviously they know I'm watching your videos.*
Nothing for oil pressure when you swap the balance shaft out! Im not sure about the auto trans, you would need to find some clever way to control it electronically!
Heck yeah I'm interested,,,,, I have not missed a video yet,,,, I subed to your channel when I started watching your first vedio,,, I subed to your channel after I watched the first ten minutes,,,, I said yeah,,, this guy knows what he's doing,,, and I haven't missed a one,,, and it doesn't matter where I'm at or what I'm doing when my phone let's me know you just posted I tell everyone I'm around that I'm gonna be MIA for about the next 30- to 45- minutes,,, so please no body talk to me until after that time,,,, I love your videos brother,,, keep posting them,,,, THANKS FOR THE GREAT INFORMATION YOU SHOW....
Thanks!! I’m glad you enjoy the channel!
Great content, thanks Austin, from New Zealand 😉
You should have done a 4.7 swap. That would have been awesome!!
Love this swap series bud. Excellent videos
Glad you like them!
Is there any reason you couldn't simply plug weld that oil hole instead of the tap and bolt method?
Nice lower end upgrade.
Good stuff bro keep the videos coming
Thanks! Will do!
I like your job sir austin
Another great video sir! Keep em coming! Huge diesel fan here, super jealous of overseas availability of diesel options! Would love to get my paws on some of the Australian diesels and the manual trannys they have to offer! Wish the states would come around and start using more diesels!
Australia and the rest of the world is phasing out diesel engines
@@catsbyondrepair yup, In Oregon they want to make it illegal for diesel to be sold by 2027. Thanks a ton all the ass hole democrats, and spineless republicans.
@@nathankoroush7918 nah blame the assholes that tune thier trucks to roll Coal
@@catsbyondrepair partially blame them.
Are you going to put this unit for sale after you finish everything or are you going to keep the Tacoma in the fleet?
Damn! How does a channel like yours not have over a million subs and thousands of likes on your video? Keep Up The Good Work! I reckon in a short period of time, you will be at Chris Fix level of subs & likes.👍🏾
Thanks I appreciate that!!
Hey I’ve got a BHW I’m looking to put in my 1987 Toyota pickup and suggestions on an adapter kit I can’t find anything
Very interesting channels from u genius Austin..have fun vlogging
Awesome that you're doing a PD swap as well! I'm definitely going to be using this vid to piece my BHW back together! #PDGang
Can't wait for the next episode
What sprocket/gear did u swap on the oil pump?? I’m about to do the delete but I don’t know if I need to swap out that gear?
Austin, I thought that you were in Hawaii at Cams and Hailey's wedding? This is a great build series! I can't wait to see what you have planned.
Yes we just got back!
Cool. I wasn't aware of that. I'm glad you got there and back safely!
Any chance of getting approximate costs on these upgrades??
Looks like it is coming along great!
👍
I’ve been spending a lot of time here and I don’t even own a truck lol
I’m just wondering when you’re going to get your hands on a v10 or v12 tdi. Expensive, but inevitable right?
Excelent work 💯
Great job
Wow! I've never been an OG subscriber before hahah.
👍
Wonderful job👏👏👏
15:10 omg i would've totally grabbed that hot gear dude
You gonna put jeep axles and differential in it to didn't you have enough trouble with the last vw seems like I seen you pull that motor out more than once and rebuild it lmao
No way!!!!!
The best Works!
very interesting series. I have a similar project in mind, so it is very helpful to me! I was wondering where you got your BHW diesel from and what i need to expect to pay for one. Whats the best way to buy one?
But the whole car man! I paid 1200 for a good runner just had a bad transmission
@@austinniemela thanks, I expected a lot more!! Did you buy it from an ad?
@@kululv yeah Facebook marketplace!
@@austinniemela thanks a lot!! I appreciate your time very much!
I love it!!!
Why do you have to remove alh oil pump gear and put a smaller one on?
It builds more oil pressure!
Oh ok I was wondering I didnt get that outher gear in the kit I got from kerma did you get the gear separate or did it come in a kit?
Hi...why do you do the balance shaft delete, just curious.......
They fail and wipe the whole motor out!
21:28 Don't you need to replace that plastic chain guide? Just asking. Thanks.
Yes that is the new one!
@@austinniemela ok. Thank you for the response.
My mans looking like he’s 44 today 😂🤦🏽♂️
Could this be done in a 2nd Gen Tacoma? Would the motor be powerful enough for it?
The 2nd gen is a bit heavier, i would say power is enough but EGT might be a issue pushing a heavier truck!
@@austinniemela Gotcha. Thanks for the reply sir.
I think BMW e92 3.0 turbo disel engine m57 could be better in tacoma than vw
It would be more expensive to use that.. Most likely...and there are always alternatives others prefer...
why did you pick a diesel VW engine over a toyota gas engine?
More power, better mpg, more fun to drive, cool noises lol
@@austinniemela Ok got it. You make it look very easy to work on. Keep up the great job. Your videos are awesome.
@@midnightzombie2811 thanks!! 👍
Loudest ratchet ever lol
Did you sell the green yota yet?
No not yet!
@@austinniemela You should post it on KSL classified it’s Utah based but if your tryna sell it for max return Utah truck prices are STUPID HIGH.
Dude, you could have been a surgeon.
Here’s a crazy build idea…. An STI motor in the next one
Why not just rebuild it why it’s out then you know exactly what you got
@@jakedewald is that this engine is everything that is not a toyota, it has many faults.
No he usado ni trabajado en los motores pump deuce, pero los ALH funcionan muy bien si se cambie el aceite cada rato y no se permite sobrecalentar. Y este tipo es perfeccionista.
