Dude this is literally the same engine I am swapping right now. I’ve posted on TDI swapped trucks about it a couple times it’s going in my 92 pickup just finished rebuilding it. Can’t wait to see the progress!
Sweet! How far are you?
Really curious to see how you get the bell housing mated to the next transmission ( or gearbox), really awesome work..
I would assume he’s going to just flip it sideways idk though🤷🏻♂️
There are several companies that make adapters, it pretty much is a bolt on.
I had a yr 2000 Passat with a TDi in it. I loved how nippy it was and economical. Only had issues quite often with the mass sensor as it lost power completely. Other than that a nice engine.
Congrats on almost 100k my dude! It's been great to watch your journey so far. You've def earned this
Thank you!!!
12:18 best content to date.
Haha dude that’s bad!
On a more serious note this is the best vid of what you need to pull from anywhere online. I have the exact same Passat in my garage right now this helped.
Sweet glad i can help!!
Love the kid seat strapped to the back of the red truck, riding in style. 47 seconds and ive clicked, hype is real.
Very inspirational, wish I could learn how to understand taking apart a vehicle and not get confused and put it all back into a vehicle. Dang need to build up some confidence in me! But much love for what you do keep up the hard work and grind.
Dude I love your channel. Since 2015 I have been interested in swapping a TDI into a small pickup for utility and fuel economy. BAM and here we are. Bravo good sir.
Sweet man do it!! Thank you!!
Super excited for this. I have the same car out back (with the bad trans) and a stripped 96 Taco patiently waiting. I've already done the B. S. Delete it's just sitting on the engine stand! Keep up the awesome vids really looking forward!
Well get to work haha thank you man!
Why not a Lexus 5.0 V8 Swap? There are some swaps already done. Amazing torque, and wonderful sound note.
Or Tundra 4.7?
@@motochris5459 could be. Not sure about the price of the engine as comparative.
better fuel economy for one. I've put almost 200k miles on my tdi swapped tacoma @ 30mpg average with around 190hp 300tq
Anything but not a diesel!
Soot gets the moot!!
Respect for your hard and tedious work!! Enjoy every minute of it. We need more great people like you!
Thank you so much 😀
It’s getting crowded in here Austin. Almost 100k subs!
Who’s out here putting thumbs down on his videos?!?? Truly disrespectful for how hard he works on these videos
Agree
Nissan owners!!
It's the internet man. Haters, douchebags, and pinecones everywhere.
its the viewers in Australia, their PC's are upside down...so a thumbs down is up
@@MussaKZN this made me laugh so hard thanks 😊
The side nozzle on the lift pump is called an eductor, probably for fuel mixing, pulling slightly warmed fuel from the fuel pump and dumping it back at the inlet to reduce plugging the strainer with gelled fuel in cold temps. Nice job pulling the engine, now I know what to do when I buy a Passat donor for my diesel swap.
Ok that makes sense!! Thanks!
Fantastic! I love the TDI content! Thank you sir!!
Glad you enjoy it!
Love the vids . Please continue to keep us in the loop with the wiring though. Really considering a diesel swap.
Will do! Thank you!
I am putting this same engine in my Stretched JK. (Videos on my channel) Almost to the startup phase.....
Hell yeah another long video! Keep up the hard work. A ton of us are enjoying it!
Thanks man!!
Love the channel. Really has me considering a Volkswagen diesel swap in my Jeep Yj.
T
I know these videos take a while to edit. Mad respect
Thank you!!
Most likely longer than taking the motor out,
Yes it takes some time!!
how much more power can you get from this engine compared to the 22re?
This will be around 220HP and 400-420TQ
HaHa you put the word power and 22re in the same sentence, my one wouldn’t pull the skin off a custard, but still running after 32 years all original that a good compromise !!
@@MussaKZN yeah, they had decent power for their time. I put a 22rte in my 86' 5 speed 4runner. Added a borg turbo, intercooler, and injectors from a turbo coupe and that thing was a blast.
What made you go with this engine instead of the 1.9 alh?
i believe that's a swirl pot jet on the fuel pump. Creates a low pressure area that draws fuel toward the inlet of the pump. It probably also helps cool the motor by constantly flowing fuel past the armature.
Okay that makes sense! Im going to leave it and tie it up in the toyota tank!
That noise sounds like the balance shaft. Most BHW's had this issue and I JUST deleted mine in the past month. Deleting it is a little complicated with the engine still in the car but should be easy once its out!
Could be! Check todays video!!
Check cam shaft and lifters.
I really like this project, I have never had a diesel vehicle and after I have been watching your videos from the red truck I am considering buying a diesel Jetta
Been so awesome watching you and this channel grow. Are you still doing the dirt bike parts full-time as well it'd be cool to get an update video on that!
Thank you! No i am full time youtube now!!!
@@austinniemela man that is so awesome!!! Been loving all your videos!!
For swapping Passat b5 1.8t to tdi pd has be changed wiring harness dashboard
I don't know much about VW stuff but I have a guy who passes my house in one of these cars to and from his job , first time I heard this thing I thought it was my buddy in his F-250 , thing sounds like a monster and I've recently witnessed him get on it “passing" someone and i have to say I was impressed
I need the charge pipe that comes off the turbo and the clips that hold it on
I have that! Shoot me a email austin@avrcustoms.com
Wow. That was a serious disection of a VW.
Leather heated seats would make nice fronts for the Tacoma
Hi, you need to look up darkside development in the UK. They do brilliant work and they get the vag deisel engines singing.
Keep up the great work. 👍
Mad respect… seriously ima do the same… one issue… I have zero experience
You are the best mechanic sir austin
I’ve wondered if those seats would fit a Toyota pickup /Hilux..
I’ve got Audi TT roadster seats in my Hilux which are made by recaro VW and Mercedes also have recaro seats I think it would be a very easy modifications,
Hey Austin, why don’t you have a car lift? You’re healthy it seems but it would be great to keep ya that way. LOL hope you and the fam are well.
In Australia Toyota turbo Diesel engines are everywhere
Loving this build series
Respect man! I know how much time it takes to edit a video like this.
i bet all the trans needed was a fluid change and filter. i have an 05 mk4 body tdi with an auto and it did this same thing. but regardless ima be here on your page binge watching everything because i just found your channel haha
Solid effort Austin! I would have just imported a hilux, I don't have ur admirable patience and determination, lol.
Another stellar and efficient video
really enjoy watching your videos
Ever thought about a 4bt swap? I don’t know much about it but It’d be cool to see it done.
I'm already looking forward to a future common rail swap lol
T
Wow u r amazing u did whatever brand of cars...idol Austin
You’re obviously a diesel guy as apparent from your other builds, have you ever considered the Cummins 2.8? This is a great motor and with all the support from Cummins, this swap would be a breeze! Love your videos and can’t wait for more!
Yes they are just expensive!
nice engines, very expensive.
If you're parting it out, I might be interested if the wheels are 17 or 18's 5 x 100?
So exciting!! Great job as always!! RESPECT!🙏🏼
Thanks so much!!
Sooooooo, you want to work on my truck while you’re at it???
Awesome Videos Sir.
thank you for turning the music down
Also it would be pretty cool if you did an American diesel swap, like a 4bt Cummins
What if you turbocharged that 3.4 5vz motor that was originally in the Tacoma?
Could’ve made a ton more power and kept the reliability
So I’ve been pondering now that I’m almost finished with the one tons and double triangulated front and rear. Vw tdi or the Mercedes tdi 4 cylinder vs 5 cylinder
*Pondering*
Looking for the manual, for a 2011 Audi A4 TDI swap I want to do...
Is there a reason that you went with this specific engine? Or just a good deal?
Love to watch these man!
What’s the trick to getting the plugs in there under the ecu out?
Great work Austin. As usual….
When will the mtga in Grey large shirts be back in stock
Next swap…….Those passat seats Into the Tacoma …..They look comfy
Very nice!!!!!!
Found something on the security..
" Pre-2001 has no immobilizer. 2002+ has Immobilizer requirements (ECM matched with key and cluster....custom chip tuning can overcome that). "
How does it read the key? is there a coil around the lock cylinder to "read" the key chip? I'm curious since I will be doing a diesel swap and want to retain the immobilizer.
@@abpsd73
Not sure which setup VW's use...
Some use a ring around the key to send to pcm others have different ways it sends the signal...
I had to fix my Olds Alero a few years back ..it had a keyswitch sensor and it was like $300 for the parts...i would have to use a scanner to program it ( i don't have one yet that can do modules ) so a $150 Stealership was quoted ( i had no local shop who could do it )...even the it was like $75 - $100+ ...
I finally found online it needs a resistance...so figured out what that was.. Ohmed out the wire to pcm with key in old switch etc.....bought $10 of resistors....
Put the value needed ( probably less than 50 cents ) and it started forever after....money light was on still...but i could dial that in with a $4 potentiometer if required later ( mechanic friend helped get that info from another tech at work...)...
It started if you disconnected the battery and started it..but wouldn't restart next time....was a cheap solution to a stupid problem...
I would have to change the Switch the Tumbler part and reprogram my keys otherwise...and was like $400 - $500 for trying to start my own car with the proper key and who knows what failed...maybe a scanner reprogramming it could have fixed it too..my GM tech said he usually replaces all those parts and reprograms it ..he couldn't scan it either ( has those at work only )...
I worked with him over a year fixing cars at a dealership...the scanners for GM were nice...
@@abpsd73
I just recalled they had security issues on tdi engines
As i was looking at engines to swap for my Ranger project...
Still plan to tackle that but too many other projects and repairs right now to start it....i would like a decent cost swap....so TDI is nice but depends on cost...NA is probably easiest but power may be lower...i want mpg not performance...hoping around 30+ mpg...better than 20 with gas...
@@garymallard4699 A Ranger is what I'm going to be swapping a TDI into as well.
Quality as always🤙🇮🇪🇮🇪
That’s a nice ass car!!!! Good vid.
This is great stuff man!
Now we are cooking steaks! Good vid!,
I read with TDI you need all the Security stuff too.... Read this awhile ago but i think the dash cluster has some things you need?
Maybe the Key Switch and whatever Security VW uses ??
Make sure you got it all before the donor car is gone....
Maybe you know all this ??
I was looking at VW Diesel swaps into Rangers and so on ...still looking at doing it...as i have a Ranger already...
You don’t need any of the immobilizer stuff, it’s all deleted in the tune!
@@austinniemela
I thought you had it figured out..ok thanks... What does a tune cost???
Do you know how i can get a 00 Ford Exploder auto transmission to work with a VW Diesel?? Or where i could find that info??
@@garymallard4699 TDConversions sells a kit to mate with the 4.0 bellhousing, they've done a Ranger with an auto, they probably could give you some tips.
@@abpsd73
Thanks...i looked at different kits for my Exploder and Ranger ( 5 spd ).
I know you can mate the auto to a diesel but not sure what i need to hook it to the computers etc..yet...
My Exploder has the Timing Chain of Death coming someday soon ( not too bad yet but rattles both front and rear chains...( 4.0L V6 issue )...
Thinking a Diesel would be better mpg but i can fix the timing chain too cheaper lol
The Ranger is my main Diesel swap project anyways...
@@garymallard4699 Luckily my 4.0 SOHC hasn't started the rattle of death yet.
I wonder if that unknown item on fuel pump keeps the water in the fuel in suspension by constantly circulating the fuel in the tank.
Could be! Im not really sure im just going to leave it!
this motor should be paired with a manual trans and stuck in the 4runner - to become the FunRunner
I think you should have done a Toyota diesel swap with bigger injectors and turbo, maybe even compound turbos.
My new favourite RUclips channel
Wow thank you! Im glad you enjoy it!
Awesome Job man!!
Thanks!
how is an engine for a little sedan powerful enough to replace a small truck engine? Is that passat pretty damn fast?
torque and driveability. The TDI will make its max power at cruising RPM. to get the same power out of the gas engine you would have to rev it up to 5k rpm. It honestly isn't more power, its about the same, but more useable because of where the powerband is. so when you're cruising along and want to pass someone, rather than downshifting and reving it to 5k, you just need to plant your foot.
@@MonkeyWithAWrench ohhh gotcha, thanks man. is that TDI a 2.4?
2.0L tdi. It should be around 220 HP and 400-420 TQ
In Australia The first generation Vw Amarock which are large duel cab pickup
Came out with a 2.0l turbo diesel!
The 2019 to current Hilux 2.8l turbo diesel 180kw 500nm
El motor del wv durará muy poco , no es fiable espero quede bien en la tacoma
Love from the PNW
Hello from Serbia /Europe/ I have same car TDI PD 96kw AVF engine code,6 speed manual gearbox, pull strong 20 year from new :) Love your videos
Very nice! Thank you!
Would you be willing to ship all 4 rims if si how much you want for them ?
Yesss!!!
Move to Hawaii 🤙🏽
I had a jetta with the 1.8t with that trans I blow my 1.8 up put a 1inch hole in the block changed the engine to find out 100km later the transmission did the same thing and ran out of cash trying to fix that car
awesome work...
Thank you!
Put the seats in the taco
What’s ur next build gonna be?
swap the seats from the passat to the yota!
6:08 lol
i need motor n transmission for 1997 hilux..
Let me know how much to bring with me when you get this one done. I want it.
Ahhhhh I’ll probably keep this one
Nice
Austin, did you go to Wyo tech
No I did not!
181,000 miles. Just run in?
Just curious why is it you want the diesel motor instead of the 3.4L V6? Not complaining about the videos they are always awesome and you are very meticulous.
More power and torque, better mileage and more smiles per gallon!
@@austinniemela 🤣 you couldn't have answered that any better right on! 👍
@@austinniemela What kinda of mpg are you expecting?
and tune up that engine in tacoma :)
I hope you saved that diesel from the passat
Wife is getting her hands dirty
My man is there a reason you went the VW engine over like a Cummins or a duramax ?
Apart from cost and availability lol
I know from the looking around I did for my future project, the R2.8 Cummins is expensive and has a bunch of extra emissions stuff on it, a 4BT is just so damn heavy and becoming hard to find in some places.
@@abpsd73 plus you can buy 4 or 5 tdi's for the price of one 4bt
and weight, noise, fuel economy, ease of working on etc. TDI is a very power dense package which means it punches way above it's weight. It's literally 1/4 the mass of a 6bt yet can pump out a reliable 300hp 500tq while knocking down 30+ mpg in a compact truck or jeep.
The thing on the pump is the relief valve for pressure
Mad respect on all that wiring Austin. What amount of torque do you except from TDI?
Should be around 400ft lb!
@@austinniemela It's total worth the swap, more then double that Toyota V6.
