@@harrison00xXx I’m glad you had a good time but remember “just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should” my comment was based on his focusing issues and what I was referring to from Canon was “During servo AF, only RF lenses and some EF lenses can be used for continuous shooting at the maximum speed.” RF lenses are designed differently to EF lenses, glass is glass but there is technology involved here and most RF camera users will know they don’t play well with non RF lenses
@@shauneverywhere Are you talking now about photo or video when you talk about servo AF? I didnt find any issues using EF lenses on my RP or my R7, and by using vintage glass the camera shoots anyways full speed (bursts) since the aperture is controlled manually/physically (and the camera doesnt know anything about the lens, no electronic contacts) You might talk about the very negliable issue on the R8 which only affects EFCS/"mechanical" in theory but since the R8s EFCS speed is abysmal, there wont be any slowdown. And the slowdown we are talking about is on my R7 like 7-8 fps vs 15 fps, 7 fps is more than enough, and in fact even my Sigma 150-600C, 3rd party EF lens allows for shooting 15 fps mechanically/EFCS. The "issue" with EF/DSLR lenses is much less than you might think. The biggest issue... you lose the mirrorless advantages such as smaller, less complicated optical formulas and smaller formfactor.
@@harrison00xXx I guessed you were a manual shooter so you wouldn’t notice anything different, all the rest is nothing to do with what I was talking about… I think you’ve lost focus more than the R8 in the video 😄 the constant issue in the video was focus, the point is you need a native RF lens to get quick AF for photo or video on RF bodies
R* Shutter acts just like an RP. go to Clean sensor now and press. When you hear the camera sensor click turn the Power Switch off, Shutter will close. When you turn Power Switch on the shutter will open and you're ready to go!
Canon´s color science is really a pleasure, and it´t more important than 120 fps ff or other spec. Colors look much pleasant than Sony . No need to spend time adjusting colors in post.
It's really something, right out of the camera. Someone once said, "Art? Art is easy, just find a beautiful woman and point a camera at her." Try that with a R8 and a good 85mm lens and you'll find you can produce art in industrial quantities.
Nice one just upgraded the old m50 to a rp but that was looking for something to use for landscapes while I kept the 200-800 on the r6ii but found the rp just too small so just upgraded that again to the R as my 2 nd body plus I’ve got a few spare batteries for the R already so looking forward to trying it out alongside the r6ii and see how they compare
Loved this video, it hit on so many levels with what I am currently contemplating for my next move to shoot video with the vintage lenses I have supplemented with some of the EOS lenses I have for shots I need autofocus with. I like that there are a few affordable RF lenses for hobos that don't jave $3k to spend on new lenses for a new system. Sony a7sIII is definitely a target camera I know would perform well but it is out or reach at the moment and if I wait till I find one used for a decent price we may be living in an appocoliptice world with no more digital media and we may have reverted back to filming on 8mm mechanical cameras in the post skynet wastelands. The R8 looks better than I expected and you've peeked my interest. Great video again! Thanks for sharing this content!
Great review dude 😀Added a sub. People seem to be panicking over R8 not having IBIS where I think that the digital stab does a better job anyway. Had the R6 with the weird warping when trying to use the IBIS with wide angle lens - the R8 with the digital one produced much better results - especially with the Canon 16-35mm f2.8. Even better if you've got lens stabilisation + digital. If you need a proper stabilisation in shots there's no way around a gimbal. As for battery - adding a battery grip totally solved that for me. Also an USB-C battery pack did an amazing job.
I have a 42 inch 4K monitor. The 4K is clearly nicer. The Zeis Lens on the R8 had much better colors. The RF 50mm T1.8 looked more washed out. Now, we don't always want the "skittles" look, but it looked nice in the clip. Apparently, the R8 does not know how to find close things, unless you choose subject detection. The R8 at 4K had brighter colors. Especially in fall that is nice. Might be freaky in the high desert. Glowing green cacti? You should send the Action 4 to MarcusPix. I bet he never got a nice present from somebody, despite how nice he is.
After watching all the this Canon R8 and 8 video, it all just blurred together and I have no Idea what camera is what! But great comparison! Btw who is your co-host? Seemed very nice!
Apart from the Canon R, Is there any other mid-range Canon camera that supports the ALL-I compression mode ? This feature is rarely mentioned by reviewers and people giving commentaries, although it affects the quality of the videos. A pity that the ALL-I option has not been retained on the Canon R6. You have to pay extra cash for it on the Canon R5.
By customizing quick menu, do you mean the one that looks like the old DSLR style, with no image preview, or the one where the buttons are around the screen? If you mean the view where the buttons are around the live preview, you can customize the buttons that appear and their placement.
I owned the Eos R and now own the R6 Mark II and it's a huge upgrade in almost every way. Even the 24 MP I find upscales to match or beat the 30 MP on the R. The only downside is that the R had a body more like the R5 with a bigger LCD and a top LCD too. Can't figure out why Canon put in a smaller LCD and removed the top one on the R6/II. The R8 is a much, much cheaper price point than the R when it was released. Internals are better but the externals are most likely not. The R6 is the successor to the R imho not the R8 (which is a RP repalcement).
Interesting that the R8 and R used are comparable price wise. Shame it’s not the case in the UK. I’m thinking of upgrading from my old 100D to either the R or R8
Hey Kasey. You can just buy a cheap 40bucks grip for R8. The grips made for RP fits perfectly fine on R8. Put 2 genuine batteries inside and voila.. You have better grip..better battery life.. R8 is a crazy good camera both for video and stills. The false color is a game changer. Even the semi pro Sony video cameras didn't have it inside. Unlike the histogram it stays on while recording. Just the false color is enough to pick this camera over any Sony. Super easy to get the correct exposure every time. Unbelieve camera for the money! Edit: There is also a workaround for the curtain to be closed while changing lenses. You can go to the menu and choose manuel sensor clean and while doing so shut down the camera. Now you have the curtain closed on the sensor while changing the lens. Edit2: The digital stab is amazing as you said. I think IBIS is only handful for stills and if you need it R6 m2 is there but for video no need for the jerky ibis help in Canon. Edit3: Yes the Canon video codec is hard to edit on most PCs. But buttery smooth with any mac with m1 or m2. Edit4 (lol) : This camera also has much much better rolling shutter performance than most of the other 4k cameras out there. You don't need to get afraid while moving your camera fast :)) Why would I choose a Sony ZV-E1 or even A7s3 over this camera? Maybe a little more dynamic range. But terrible screen at daylight , no viewfinder on mot of them and no false color will eventually force you to buy an external monitor. I am not that much geek sorry :) I will not rig my camera to look pro :)) I am pretty sure R8 will sell a lot.. Canon did great this time!
I see why some people may think that because of the similar form factor and small battery, but Canon themselves stated that it is the successor to the R.
If you were to pick a mid-priced camera for both video and wildlife photography/video what would it be? Seems like the main options are Canon R6ii, Canon R8, Canon R7, Sony A74, Nikon Z6ii/z7ii, PANY S5ii. Any others that you would consider if MFTs are excluded?
Panasonic s5ii the clear winner between these cameras for video. Check out the X version as well for 200$ more if you plan using a ninja V from time to time. Will be my personal upgrade as well.
🤣🤣 i lova your reviews.. I have also bought an R8 with an adapter,. Lucky that they have provided an extra battery ..I have upgraded from canon 550d and find this R8 very tiny and will take me some time to get used to this camera..
I have had the EOS R since it came out. I have always used 4K. I used a Canon 16-35 4L. The video is very good. I have never understood why people didn’t want to use a wide lens can complained about the EOSR 4K. Silly. The 50mm 1.8 RF lens is not in the same league as the Canon 16-35mm 4L. Your test was not a fair comparison. A cheap lens versus a good lens.
Planar rules. One thing that gave the RF50/1.8 away was the horrible field curvature. Thats where the Planar name comes from, being very well corrected for a perpendicular plane of focus.
Waited for this. I got the R8 and bought additionally a Powerbank which can quick charge. I even can run the camera with it, has to be a battery inside but for me it does the trick.
Thanks for this video!! Although there were a few situations in which the R8 in 4k looked better to me than the R in 1080, overall I don't think it is a substantial enough upgrade for me to ditch one or both of my Rs and go to an R8. Very much appreciated! Hate to say it, but I may actually consider trying an R5C one of these days. That might just be the answer to it all, just have to rob a bank first.
Switching to the R8 at 4:40 was bad, dunno if it's a grading issue, but the OG R looked far better. I was considering 'upgrading' to the R8 but the battery is a killer for me, but I guess the R6 Mk2 was really the intended upgrade path for OG R users, that, or the R5/C
The battery is one of the least things you should care about the R8, a tiny powerbank allows to run the camera via powerbank or charge the battery in off position. Also, a single spare battery always charged is enough to be honest beside a "used" battery in the camera, the only issue could be the charging later... in camera only and it takes a while
@@harrison00xXx yea I forgot about the power bank, but it's a bit of a faff and not exactly weather proof. I think it's a great camera, but as with most canon cameras, the cripple hammer needs to hit somewhere 😂
Canon only has 3 EOS cameras that can record Video in ALL-I, the rest record Video in IPB. They’re the EOS R3, EOS R5 and yes!! the EOS R. The EOS R records 4K cropped ALL-I video!, it can also record IPB video. ALL-I has lower compression rate than IPB.
Lower compression rate, yes, but its only "visible" (if at all...) under very heavy and unexpected movements when you pixel peep frame by frame. IPB is just fine, in fact i use on my EOS R7 often even IPB light (about half the data so 2x more compression!)
@@harrison00xXx :“in fact i use on my EOS R7 often even IPB light” IPB is super compressed, hard to playback/edit files, ALL-I frame is better. When I record video, I'm going to want the highest quality camera native clips. Canon eos R give you a choice “ALL-I or IPB”…… EOS R7 doesn’t!!! Take a look at “Canon EOS R vs EOS R6 Mark II 4K Quality Comparison” Here in RUclips, use the link. ruclips.net/video/_HSVmzazj7Y/видео.html&ab_channel=CharlesLuckyProd.
Have realised what a sucker I am for that "contrasty-with-pleasing-skin-tones " look you get from Canon. Nothing quite like it. I haven't owned a Canon since the 5D MarkII but that color science torments me constantly because I can't quite get that look anywhere else. To me they're a one-trick pony, but what a trick... CURSE YOU CANON!! 😠
Thinking about upgrading the Eos R to R6 mark ii, but still love my R, also I have many L Lens but finding myself using tamron 24-70 2.8 95% of the time so still can find justification to move to RF 24-70
I just got the R8 and I agree the stabe on the R8 is better than Sony even my Z-VE1 with Active Dynamic. I don't know what magic they do over there at Canon but the stabe is amazing. I plan to do a Z-VE1 vs Canon R8 video to see which is best. Cheers.
@@PhotoGearFun I gotta see this because I am in a love triangle with the R8, S5iix, and the ZVE1. I am swaying to the R8 since I am in the Canon system and it’s the cheapest right now but the Sony and Panasonic look tempting!
@@Jcwwolf I just watched my Z-VE1 video again and the R8 and the Z-VE1 with Dynamic Active are very close to one another to my eye. I plan to do a video comparing the two at some point.
@@PhotoGearFun I just seen your R8 video with digital Stab with the RF 24-105. I am very impressed with the results and I think I might just go with that. I own a nifty fifty and Ef24-105. My only problem with Canon is lack of third party support.
I hate that the R8 uses those tiny batteries. I was hoping for a budget full frame camera to accompany my R7. I thought the R8 would be it, being toted as an EOS R replacement which uses the same LPEN6H. Alas, it was not to be.
The Pop is real, and the Canon R8 cannot focus. Peter Gregg has multiple videos where the R8 just sucked at auto-focus. That's why even when I saw an R8 refurbished for $1,000, I passed on it. The Canon system just sucks in so many different ways. It kills you like slow poison. Then, the R8 dynamic range, wow, so poor, nothing like the Sony.
I like cinematic look on cameras released between 2016 and 2020. Since 2020, they look more poppy but I prefer editing my files like on the Sony cameras look (more flat and cinematic and poppy only on brighter light)
I have the R8. It pisses me off that I can’t set the rear dial to exposure compensation in Av/Tv and have it still work in M. Seriously, if you set it up for exposure compensation in Av/Tv it stops doing anything in M. I contacted Canon and they confirmed that it’s working properly. Absolutely stupid. If you have an R, R6, R5, or R3, you can set it this way and the rear dial will still work in M. I can set my 40d, 70d, em5, and G85 this way and it functions fine. Why is the R8 different? Do I really need to spend more money to get such a simple feature? It also feels cheap as hell.

I cant really agree. I enjoyed my RP with any lens, but one thing is true - RF lenses are the most charming stuff on RP/R8 style bodies
I didnt find any issues using EF lenses on my RP or my R7, and by using vintage glass the camera shoots anyways full speed (bursts) since the aperture is controlled manually/physically (and the camera doesnt know anything about the lens, no electronic contacts)
You might talk about the very negliable issue on the R8 which only affects EFCS/"mechanical" in theory but since the R8s EFCS speed is abysmal, there wont be any slowdown.
Wild how you got 85mm compression on the OG R using a 50 in 4k. 😂 17:27
“I have this do you want to buy it” made me lol
R* Shutter acts just like an RP. go to Clean sensor now and press. When you hear the camera sensor click turn the Power Switch off, Shutter will close. When you turn Power Switch on the shutter will open and you're ready to go!
hahaha want to see some sharp, its my knife)))) killed me from the beginning bro)))
Canon´s color science is really a pleasure, and it´t more important than 120 fps ff or other spec.
Colors look much pleasant than Sony .
No need to spend time adjusting colors in post.
Thanks for the video. Still rocking the R in 2024.
😂 the beginning skit was hilarious and informative.
On my 32" 16:9 4k Benq, there is a noticeable difference between 1080p and 4k. Even on my 16" Wacom. On my phone, not so much.
Canon really does have nice color science. I might try one. I’m no good at color-grading.
It's really something, right out of the camera. Someone once said, "Art? Art is easy, just find a beautiful woman and point a camera at her." Try that with a R8 and a good 85mm lens and you'll find you can produce art in industrial quantities.
I am in hysterics--the slow mo focusing killed me
If I only want to do portrait photography what should I choose between R, R6 (mark 1) and R8? All 3 have the same price in my country
T-stop and not F-stop? Are they accurate fr these lenses?
Nice one just upgraded the old m50 to a rp but that was looking for something to use for landscapes while I kept the 200-800 on the r6ii but found the rp just too small so just upgraded that again to the R as my 2 nd body plus I’ve got a few spare batteries for the R already so looking forward to trying it out alongside the r6ii and see how they compare
One of the truly GREAT intros, you little whippersnapper! 🤣
Please review the pocket 3.
I want to get the R8 but I would also have to get a whole new set of lenses coming from apsc.
Does gopro 8 count as scrub status?
5D v < Ra < R5 < R5ii < R5iii andd....
6D < 6Dii < RP < R8 < R8ii or R6
7D < R7
The R has better video codecs than R6 and R6ii. R6 and R6ii don't shoot in ALL- I while the R does.
@@wpkambiancesounds In which modes the R allows for All-I?
My EOS R7 also allows for ALL-I... in damn timelapse mode, so not really "video".
@@harrison00xXx The R allows All I in most video modes. I still use the R but for video i got the A7s iii.
Yes a huge upgrade in cash as well
Is the Sony A7iii still worth buying used (900$) or ist the R8, XS20 or S5II better value for money?
No
I am shocked to admit… the R „feels“ more cinematic and nicer to look at, than the r8.🤷🏻♂️
Nah, crunchier contrast gives it a mild saturation boost that's all that's happening. It looks like it's got aps-c dynamic range. 😂
The R8 with Zeiss is nice!
You don't need to get afraid while moving your camera fast :))
Why would I choose a Sony ZV-E1 or even A7s3 over this camera? Maybe a little more dynamic range. But terrible screen at daylight , no viewfinder on mot of them and no false color will eventually force you to buy an external monitor. I am not that much geek sorry :) I will not rig my camera to look pro :)) I am pretty sure R8 will sell a lot.. Canon did great this time!
5:30 at first picture seems too yellow, but then i realised that you were looking so much younger
The R8 is more of a replacement for the RP than the R.
I see why some people may think that because of the similar form factor and small battery, but Canon themselves stated that it is the successor to the R.
@@gavthane We dont think it, we SEE IT...
@@IliasKoureasThanks for that. I guess the main issue with S5ii is lack of lens options, especially in the long telephoto zoom realm.
Regarding money, the crop one is the only choice here. Regarding good shots, any 40+Mp model for crop in post.
@@hervedelnorte7928 that's true.
I could listen to these dialogue clips for days!
🤣🤣 i lova your reviews.. I have also bought an R8 with an adapter,. Lucky that they have provided an extra battery ..I have upgraded from canon 550d and find this R8 very tiny and will take me some time to get used to this camera..
Buy a battery grip
I like the R8 vintage better, i chose that one. Looks more like a documentary, professional
Yessir
the Planar looks much better than the RF 50 when you are in focus. The background blur is more pleasing.
The lenses are the same price... Budget modern prime vs budget vintage prime.
What is f2.8 and f1.2? Has Toneh changed..??
this man is hilarious but very informative !
Planar rules. One thing that gave the RF50/1.8 away was the horrible field curvature. Thats where the Planar name comes from, being very well corrected for a perpendicular plane of focus.
The R8 with I would think the RF50 (I know my RF16f2.8 does) would correct the distortion when shooting video and stills except in raw mode.
Straight to the meeting 🎉😂
As an upgrade from EOS RP, that's way better! not bad at all. You have more RF or EF lenses, aren't you? Let us hear thee blessing of reviews.
The wig thing killed me dude. Hahaha
i kinda preferred the one with jacket sounds. it feels more right like it's supposed to be there.
I think it would sound much more natural if you would add some silent artificial noise after doing the voice isolation run.
Alll these fancy 4k comparisons. Now I have to get 4k monitors to follow along. Can you actually tell the difference in youpoop?
Waited for this. I got the R8 and bought additionally a Powerbank which can quick charge. I even can run the camera with it, has to be a battery inside but for me it does the trick.
I'm torn between buying the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7iii. Both have their pros and cons but I already have a 24-70mm for the Sony.
“1080p is the sweat spot you little shit!” Hahahaha Love it!
How about testing the biotar 58/2?
@@harrison00xXx :“in fact i use on my EOS R7 often even IPB light”
IPB is super compressed, hard to playback/edit files, ALL-I frame is better.

Cheers.
What about Dynamic stab tho?
@@Jcwwolf that is what I meant Dynamic Active if not better it is every bit as good.
Alas, it was not to be.
itulah yg bikin aku bingung. aku sekarang menggunakan 80D yg spesifikasinya tidak jauh berbeda. apakah aku akan ke eos R ?
Looks like the R8 colors are snappier and a little more contrast
the digital IS on the R8 is really exceptional
Agree VERYYYYYYYYY impressive 😮
This look is sick bro
This is the video I needed im in between both 😂
1080 p Is the sweet spot u little s word 😂😂😂😂❤❤it!1 classic
4k vintage lens vs HD new lens. Genius!
This young man his SOOO entertaining 🙏🏾😂😂
The R8 has a violet-ish tint on the black(?) jacket - not overly convinced by the colors ...
That's the hammer at work.
It is possible to put a 3rd party battery grip on the R8 that was made for the RP
