Panasonic S5IIx Pros and Cons vs Sony ZVE1 and Canon R8

- Panasonic S5IIx review. Brutally honest review vs the competition. Is much different vs the S5II? What about the Sony ZV-E1 now, is the S5IIx already dated? Canon R8 has full frame 4k 60p vs aps-c mode for S5II, and 180fps HD with autofocus vs no autofocus in the S5 IIx. Are these extra codecs worth it if you can't use any of of them in camera? BRAW does sound awesome.

Noob question: Can Still images be written directly to the SSD drive as well?
I think They can't record raw internally because of RED patent on it. Apple also lost that case against RED.
I''m old and sick with cancer BUT, you give me lots of laughs. Thanks man. Keep em coming.
@@Tensentities Thanks, I appreciate that.
you can beat that thing. God bless. Jesus heals.

Hope you feel better. Sending good thoughts man!
🤔 I don’t know man, that S5IIX is looking good.
That crop though
Just use a wider lens. Dollar for dollar I know of nothing better. @@JeffBourke
@@avarmadillo yeah, got the 24mm and I can go 60p with the super duper stabe after the last update, focus is amazing now second only to sony and it's awesome!!
For the first time in YEARS of watching your channel I have to comment on the AMAZING colors and tones of the Panny!! Wow!!
My 20-60mm (was the kit lens with S5) and 70-300mm both operate smoothly, but then again mine aren't stunt lenses for performing falls onto hard surfaces.
Ye same my kit lens was smooth as hell when I got my S5. Might be a bad batch out
My kit len's zooms' jerk like removing a corkscrew!
@@misterabroad123 I must admit, I tried the S5ii in the shop yesterday and that one was stiff as well.
Yep my 20-60mm and 70-300mm are smooth too.
As I was watching the review, thinking that there are a lot of things to be a little disappointed in (cropping, no AF in high fps modes, and a low 180 max fps, less than quality feel to the lenses) but then I saw the actual video images and they are pretty amazing!
You can make me watch reviews of cameras I’ll never even consider buying. Your comedic style is genius. I appreciate you.
S5IIx looking objectively better every time
@ 1:10 into your video I was on the floor laughing. Nice one numbnuts...... Keep up the good work, always fun to tune in and watch you.
Man, your videos are so awesome, best scene... camara drops... F..... ** ......... C ....... ** LOOOOL Love it! Great video, very entertaining as usual!
Well done Pannyboy. Can't wait for the updated M43 camera.
That was the best wildlife footage I've seent on this channel
Noticeably better than the Sony
I let you watch Gerald. Then I watch you.
Love your videos my man. They always make me chuckle. I have the s5II and love it. Never seen the benefit in the x
Congrats on the new X3000. The standard frame rate footage is actually amazing.. killer camera.
It would be amazing to see Panasonic's new autofocus tech trickle down to a possible G85 successor in the near future. Maybe a crop sensor version cut down from the full frame, instead of m43. Split the difference.
G9 mk2 is it.
This is the kind of content that makes me hit that bell
Can’t wait for your V10 thoughts!
LLLMMAAOOOO that dual camera wielding street crossing scene.... GOLD BABY !!! GOLD !!!
How does this guy not have multiple brand deals?!?! Love my camera conspiracies t-shirt!
Probably because his vids are long AF, and I'm sure many don't care for his delivery?
I think he's funny, but I just can't take 20-25 minutes of it.
The wildlife footage you got looks so good
Appreciate the Panny experience again. Looked great!
You are great man...the Chihuahua part its to much hahaha, well done with the review btw
X3000 for the WIN!! Seriously nice to have that back on the channel. Panny looks pretty great to my non pink eye.
The only reason there is more toneh on the BMPCC is because the whole image is soft lol
Yes, no details are sharp.
Still going strong with my G9!
Yo!
A very nice review. Fresh and fun way to do it! Cheers Mate!
best wildlife image quality i ve seen by you mate, good job panny, i think that you will like the sigma ...as they say all L-mount lenses are like 1st party.... go get em tiger
I'm really really waiting GH7... if they bring all that glorios stuff to M4/3 system.
GH7 same size as GH5, with amazing IBIS, and the new autofocus system? Would be the killer camera.
YES! I agree with you here. I’ve invested a lot of money with my M4/3 pro lens collection, All the great upgrades added to a GH7 would be perfect 👍🏻
@@iSpike 😂😂😂
Ma gh6 II should have the new AF, so im excited
Excellent video
there is something about the panni codecs for wildlife, they just look good. I keep returning to the g9 even if the AF is subpar, vs. Sony or Olympus. For a basic FF hybrid, it is difficult not to go for the s5.2 with that kit lens. Lets see now a GH6-like fast readout version.
The S5 AF is better than the G9, and it's keenly priced right now. At lower frame it rates allows for full frame and "telephoto" aps-c shots with one lens. I use vintage manual glass for video so autofocus isn't an issue.
@@borderlands6606 I have the S5M2, so no need to settle for the S5 worse AF 🙂. But for telephoto I still use M43, I cannot lug around the current FF lenses >300mm, it is just silly.
The way I look a the S5 vs S5II is they are in a completely different price bracket of camera. S5 is at an optimal price to performance level for full frame, the S5II starts heading towards competing with the above optimal camera range, and it's price for the small feature bump shows it. Especially if like me you got the S5 on a super sale when the S5II was coming out lol.
I was considering A7s iv, R8 and Lumix S5iix. Ended up going for Lumix as it represented the best value.
Lovely video man. what about the AF in still photos for action / wild life?
The starling shot is beautiful! :)
I'm proud to have witnessed the cinema!
Bro I own Multiple S5 II and a S5 II x. Love these Cameras and the 70-300 and ever the 24-105 are super dope.
btw, you absolutely need to do more 'commentary' stuff. Very entertaining and funny.
Buuudy!!! been awhile and Im still laughing. Love your content cracks me up. If you are ever in Calgary and want to go for a beer give me shout would be a blast to hang out!! Cheers my friend and all I want is the perfect camera as well haha!!
Thank you for the mirror duck in my life.
I'm infatuated with the stabilization on the Panasonic, only used Canon and Sony cause i use the autofocus to film myself...but man i've got my eyes on a Panny might hold out for an updated 4/3rds for form factor.
I’m curious why would you go with a 4/3 sensor and not the full frame sensor?
Legend ❤
WOW!! Your wild life work has really gotten quite good…
Wow panie boy has done it beautiful. The perfect camera. But I have to get the L alliance lenses. I think it's worth it!! Great job Panasonic. ❤
I got the s5ii, love the image out of it and the stabe is crazy especially with the 24-105. Rigged up - can't even imagine how steady it would be. For casual video, the natural profile looks really nice.
If you're going to get the s5iix, just put the cash down and get that kondor blue ssd handle. It's slick as hell. I'm guessing the in-camera raw is going to be the big daddy model since it's such a niche feature that the main people who need it are the folks with equipment budgets who can write off a new camera. Also heard they're doing $400 discounts when you buy an s5iix and lens together. If it would have been practical for me - that's the deal I would have gone for.
Does s5ii really not have autofocus in slowmotion? I am thinking of this or zve1 as a gh5 user
@@davidvictory9764 it has AF but it's contrast detect up to I believe 100 or 120 frames iirc. From 120-180 it's manual only. The quality of the 180 isn't very good and I would only use it for casual/social media use. It's not going to look good on a bigger screen
@@karikaru oh that sucks. So hard to choose a camera as nothing seems perfect even tho realistocly it's more than enough. I thought I was the only one that thought 180fps looked awful on the gh5 and very digital and noisy. Thx now I know
@@davidvictory9764 no problem! Yeah I'm rarely using slow motion or if I do, it's 60fps so not a big deal for me but I can understand for others it can be.
@@davidvictory9764 I'm in the same boat!
I've been waiting since before the A7iv/Z6ii came out to figure out what I want to throw my money down on!?!?
That has to be a pretty big statement - I have had the money to buy a camera (in the 2-3k price range), plus a good lens and accessories for 4-6 years now, but still haven't - due to , you guessed it - consistent crippling and hammering!
Is the Canon m50 mkii any good? I have an S5 which I like when I can focus the thing. I was wondering if I should get that as a smaller camera that I can use as a lower effort/more reliable focusing when I'm walking the dogs and stuff. It would be disguised as a gift for the Mrs. I do a lot of stuff similar to you minus the vlogging, I take snaps as well. Cheers.
The internal recording options of the S5 IIx on fast SD cards are absolutely enough for run and gun content creators.
Obviously, this whole video was shot like that.
Excuse my ignorance, what card specs are you referring to? Cheers..
@@andrewp1513 V90 cards can record everything expect the ProRes codecs on the S5 IIx
For this purpose S5II without the x is all you need.
@@gnosticone Can we record BRAW on V90 cards
I need that damn GH7 with phase auto focus to come out. it's been 6 years with my GH5.... I neeeeddd itttt
Hey man, if you're shooting at 300mm, and 4k60, etc is cropped in, what actual focal length is it and do you like the crop considering 300 being the longest Lumix lens for the moment???
Thanks in advance!
Nice thumbnail! Hahahaha had to click on it no matter what! Love your videos anyway!
Me too, I REALLY wanna see what the S1H successor will do. That''s what I've had my eyes on ever since the GH6, but im ven more interestd since the S52 came out.
Good vid
I had the s5ii. I took it back and was going to wait for this to come out and get it. But I have since changed my mind. I'm going to save up and I'm going to wait for the s1hii. I really hope they're going to go all out in that camera. I really like panasonics colors. I just hated their autofocus. Now that's a lot better.
Looking forward to the bmpcc IR filter video when you realize all your blacks are red.
Other than the IR polution it is insane how well it compares to a camera almost a decade newer.
Have you tried the CineLikeD2 profile? That’s my favorite when I don’t want to mess with vlog on my S5.
OMG 😂
I have tears in my eyes dude, I still cant stop laughing, catching that tip over on camera was epic beyond epic, we've all done it (sort of) my god the comedy of unintentional errors is the best comedy.
Made my day man cheers.
3:04 yes I was testing the s5 II two days ago and had the same "issue" the zoom on the 20-60 is pretty stiff or how you wanna call it. It's the opposite of smooth.
Hello. Please let us know if Lumix S5IIX has PDAF in 1080p frame rates from 24 to 120 FPS.
That raven with the orange shoulder pads is outside my window right now! Small world.
Nice Map behind you ;)
was just in the middle of a gerald video but i had to tune in
The Sony X3000 had a ton of artifacts in the 240fps mode, while the Pannyboy was nice and clean at 180fps.
😅 I've known for a while that you have this channel but this is my first time watching it. I've been an event videographer for about 20 years. But I've evolved into more documentary style stuff and never rigged a camera before. But I just bought an FX30 and started rigging it up. Ever since I got a cage and v mount I've been experimenting with different monitors, trying different handles, even got a Ronan RS3 pro and thinking about adding it to the cage and handles all crazy, saving up to get the FX3 but holding off well I learn on the FX30 in hopes they will upgrade it which has to be coming please!!!!
8:06 he looks happy 😊
They should just upgrade the G85 autofocus
Have you tried the 180fps on the r6ii or r8? Is it any better? I sold my Fuji for a z9, then blew out my knee and dropped it in the lake 🤦♂️ on the hunt for a cheaper replacement. Going to shoot the sigma 60-600 with it, have to assume canon’s autofocus makes the difference here?
That Panny is just incredible. The things you are mentioning - vloggers so many times - 99 % of people are going to record in 60fps no matter what. Imo whats most important for a vlogger is stabilisation, and hands on, there is probably no camera with better IBIS in this price range than this one. The options for amateur filmographers are there as well with that huge selection of codecs (SSD tho, but you want to use that anyway if doing filmmaking). The only real hit this camera gets is that crop while recording, but sharpness, color science and stabilisation are way over its price league.
I heard that the S5ii doesn't have USB-C streaming, though it may be possible through the HDMI to a Cam Link. I don't know for sure, though. I think the S5iiX does allow USB-C streaming. Maybe I'm using the wrong word. Web-cam? Is web-cam the same as streaming? Putting a video/audio signal directly to the computer.
Wondering if the crop in higher frame rates and 4k could be improved via firmware? Maybe reduce pdaf and eye tracking function for less crop? Or is this not possible via firmware and is a hardware limitation?
This should be a hardware limitation. It's most probably not even be the processor, but the Sensor.
Man you need to try R8 + rf 100-400mm it would be fun . Althought the fun only last for 30 minutes lol
Have you tried a Canon lens EF lens on the Panasonic S5II (with Sigma MC-21 adaptor)?
every one that I have tried work fine including aftermarket ones
Yeah we know, you still have issues with it..... But honestly, I think the S5 checks all my boxes so hard that it wipes them clean off the list! I wouldn't even have a list if I had an S5. Keep in mind though, I can barely use my G9 properly so I'm definitely not ready for an S5, but that won't stop me from buying one if the right deal comes around. Yeah I already have an Atmos 5, and I've got plenty of SSD's which this camera can use right out of the box. You don't need the ninja from my understanding, just an external SSD, but I already have both so I'm good to go! Cheers 🍻
1:05 to 1:18. The most impressive short film ever made!
dont you kind of have to choose between the atomos or the black magic? isnt it either prores raw or braw?
It is Soooo good you got chance to touch the difference.
Can speak for atomosV on a Nikon Z7II recording using 10bit HDMI out (No Log or HLG) into native , pro res HQ (422?),
Yes it is cumbersome and not suited easily to vlogging but the imagery after I put it through davinci resolve 18.4 then convert it to H.265 main 10 and play it (Finally) on my 4K Srgb monitor...
is stunning !
Good video bloke.
S5IIX really is beautiful
Man you're a great actor and I believe you know It. Best than lots of them in Hollywood 😎 So, could helpe me to pick a camera? I almost bought a gh6. I'd like something, necessarilly same price, but just around this price (it could be more). Thanks for this help and for the brilliant channel! Thanks, cause I didin't buy gh6. And what a relief! I You're an artist man!
I'm that guy that helps the S5 ii x out.... I've got it rigged up all pretty with my video assist, ssd, and external battery. It's nice having so much power with a versatile form fsctor.
I shoot all my free time footage in FHD prores, and most of my client ahoots too. You can crop in pixel- pixel to in FHD, which gives your folcal length a 3.125 boost. That way, you can really reach out with a 300mm.
I do use sigma glass tho....
I have an S5ii with the 20-60 and the 70-300 and both zoom and focus really smoothly - you've not been playing on a sandy beach have you?
🤣🤣🤣🤣amazing video! the comedy is great
Loved the interface in black magic but hated to color grading aspect
Dude, for the BRAW you need the Video Assist, not the Ninja Atomos.
For birds you dont need BRAW.
But that prores option on the S5iix is the one to shoot at.
I am actually suprised you went for that OG BMCC and not the Sigma FP. It probably cost and weight the same, but the Sigma kill it.
And it can shoot raw internally. Thats right!
The panny looks amazing allthough its a bit souless.
Would wait to see what Leica would bring instead of the SL2-S (a remake of the panny).
The blacks do not look right from the S5iix. Is that a grading issue, or the nature of the sensor?
I've read that the GLIDE escapes if a lens hits the floor.
I bought the S5M2X a year ago after watching this video. I've been using the 20-60 kit lens which has been fine for my mediocre YT channel. I have a 24mm 1.8 on the way since I only really use the 20-60 at 24mm. I'm glad it has the same filter size so I can move my Black Pro Mist over to the new lens when it gets here. Will the cinema finally be ours? Time will tell.
Looks like you hit the JJ before this friend 😂❤😂 7:17
What about Canon EOS M 14bit RAW with ML crop mood?
Panasonic colours, thank you very much
Hi. When are you planning to post a Z8 review?

X3000 FTW!
dude I love the way how you explain the things) keep going ) no mater what the camera)))) you just need a right broom ))) Its super funny even fo russians ))))))))
Thank you for the review of the 70-300 lens. It's an option - actually the only option right now it seems for wildlife. I bought the 5iiX a month ago with the 20-60 kit lens. Yes, the zoom is stiff, but I hear it smooths out over time. For now, it seems adequate for RUclips videos and Panasonic's L mount short lens selection is pretty good. However, their long lens selection is well MIA. I really don't want two systems so help me out here Panasonic. Do I have to jump into another system for wildlife video due to the lack of lens selection??
С байонето l, все объективы хороши. Собирай panasonic
They do have a compact 100-500mm on the roadmap
@@Wildridefilms came here to say the same thing , their coming up with 5 new s series lenes that should go up to 600mm and that would just make the system much more competitive even more
The Black Magic made you look like you have a sun burn. Pany looks great, but the GH6 looked better, especially in slow-mo.
Love your stuff. but yeah there's not a lot of $2000-2300 cameras that will do Prores, Prores RAW, etc in camera. Even if you could, SD cards are ridiculously inefficient in terms of both storage space and price for anything past H264/H265. So i don't really think it's fair to criticize that. After all, for most of the main mirrorless cams in this price range in recent years, you'd need an external recorder AND SSD to do that kinda stuff anyway. Personally i'd rather have the option to record to an SSD i have lying around. I know you're being dramatic, but you don't need a $200-300 SSD to record anyway. You can get old samsung NVMEs that are like 512GB with an enclosure for like...$60 all in? 1TB SSDs, you don't need the fastest ones, virtually any modern SSD is more than capable of those bitrates. I'd much rather just pony up for an SSD than pay whatever the hell they charge for massive SD cards that are also uber fast if i need that kind of data rate.
Truth is that the VAST majority of people are just fine shooting like 100-150mbps H264 and still getting amazing results. Even for paid work it's rarely worth going over that unless it's actually high end. And if you're doing work that really warrants ProRes or RAW, you are basically expected to rig things out regardless, even just to make corporate clients make you think you're 'worth the money'. The flexibility this camera offers is fantastic.
please make a compare video of a7iv and s5ii x
The X3000 is so sharp!
Pana colours look great!
With the exception of the 240Fps, The Sony X3000 does look great ( even though the RUclips compression )
