WASR-10 AK Review (Romania's best, worst, most reliable, greatest, most OK/superior 7.62x39 AK)

  • Here is my submission to the WASR's great amount of internet coverage. Love it or hate it, it is a great AK. Please excuse the audio issues. They aren't terrible so I'm keeping the vid up. It is a slight problem that showed up after export that I didn't catch before uploading! You can still get the idea!

    I did three tours in Viet nam (age78). I carried a Russian ak 47 for a period of time. it never failed . I have 3 wasr 10 ak, 's. one is an under folder like yours and the other two are swing folding stocks. all three were very rough, bold draged on the trigger, and rusty in side. I stripped the rifles down to just parts, deburred, all sharp burrs inside and out. replaced the triggers with an alg triggers, touched up with bluing, and then coated with frog lube. replace the crappy paper clip that hold tigger pins with metal clip. now the ak 's are slick and smooth. steel mags lock up tight. one of the side folders site is canted but still shoots ok. off the bench I get 2 1/2 - 3 inch groups with Russian ammo. few years back I took a nice eight point white tail with my first wasr 10. they shoot like a meat grinder, they are a tool, but very reliable.

      Haha the reliable part has proven to hold 100% true in every conflict the AK's been in from invasions to street wars and more, the only thing funny to me is remembering how everyone used to talk about how indestructible they are. They're strong rifles no doubt, but after working with them and comparing them to say a milled SKS or an FAL, you start to really understand they really are stamped out tin can rifles. After cleaning my WASR for the first time in yeaaaaaaaars and noting the 1mm thin receiver rails the other day I leaned it against the wall and thought "I could probably just mulekick this thing in the front trunnion RIGHT NOW and it would cave in permanently..." After that I put it away before I really got curious. Now that I remember, I had an underfolder Yugo M70 years ago too and I thought the same thing about the stock.

      @@ottokittel709 Your WASRs didn't come with the Tapco G2 triggers? Mine did and the pull is sweet. Mine cam parkerized in good shape but tge wood stock is badly finished. It came with front sight and gas block canting. I "fixed" the front sight drifting the barrel with the sight post and the gas block cant didn't affect function. The thing has been 100% literally since 2011. I use it fondly.

    @walrusking148 Месяц назад +2

    To adjust your front sight drum you'll want to pick up a Magna-Matic tool. Those U shaped ones are often made of cheap pot metal. Also just as an FYI the magwell dimples are for strengthening the receiver (just as the welded plates are), not for magazine fitment. AKs are a different beast, and take some time to get used to them. I took one of my AR loving friends to the range, and let him shoot my WASR-10. We were doing unsupported bench-rest, and he couldn't make hits on the target at all. I can do 6 inch groups at 100yards unsupported, which isn't even that good, but it just shows that you'll get better if you take the time to learn the platform. Best wishes 👍

    • @strongcontendervideo8906
      @strongcontendervideo8906  Месяц назад +1

      Magna-matic, got it. Yeah I didn’t go into a ton of detail on dimple vs non-dimple here nor did I use very technical descriptions of it (guess that’s what I get for going off script hahaha). It’s at least partly for centering mag in receiver and that’s all I was looking to hit. Thanks for the info dude! I love the advice!

    Most problems on the Century AK's including the WASR's, old NPAPS and OPAP's can be fixed. They are not pretty, but by and large, they work (The ones I mentioned) most of the time. And almost all the issues can be fixed fairly easily. Mine has run through 5k+ rounds since 2011 without a jam. If I had to run out the door with a weapon, my 10/63 would be on the short list of weapons I would grab. I trust it.

      The trigger pins are not supposed to be peened in on an AK. They likely just forgot to put the Shepard's hook in which is an easy fix. The action on my WASR is very rough and is fussy on feeding certain ammunition types, the trigger is nothing but mush until it breaks. Having shot my buddies pre ban izhmash AK103 the difference in quality is night and day it shows how much nicer the izhmash is.

      Do you know about when yours was manufactured? Somebody else commented earlier about Cugir having some rough eras of QC. Mine is honestly really great besides the sight post being very stiff, and honestly that may be an easy fix. I guess the trigger issue would be on Century though. Loved the intro. The Wasr 10’s are great rifles, just don’t buy one from 07 through 08. They dropped the QC to push them out like crazy during the election crunch. With that being said I love good Wasr’s. My 83 is probably the best one I have had over the years.
    Put some heat on the base of that post and see if you can’t tap it over, and pick up a front sight post tool. Set the rear sight ladder at 200, zero at 25 yards and then check your zero. You should be good with a belly hold out to 300, and then top of head at 400 without touching the ladder.

    Subbed for the intro, crazy amount of effort for a guy with less than 250 subs. I see you going places bud.
    As far as your front sight, get the “magnamatic” tool, it’s O shaped and wraps fully around the front sight assembly instead of U shaped and won’t snap, also not made of pot metal like the UTG and all the other cheap ones are. I got mine out of the AKOU store. Maybe consider applying a little penetrating oil too, not a ton, if it doesn’t move with the magnamatic. Don’t do crazy though, it is supposed to be tight, friction fit is what keeps it from moving.
    You must have been shooting a really tiny target if the front sight was completely covering it at 50 yards. lol. Shooting on my little home range, I can clearly see an 8 inch (roughly head sized) target at 75 yards with AK irons.
    Also, if you bought the WASR new, you won’t be even close to shooting the barrel out, that’s only at like 15-20k rounds where it will be to that level. Maybe more if it’s sporadic shooting and not burning the barrel out.

    My first AK (Or any of that style of rifle at all really) was a GP-WASR10 which I bought right after the AWB Sunset. It was... not a good rifle. It was sorta shit with canted sights, tons of mag wobble, the receiver rails started to fail and the the carrier would occasionally pop out of the track as a result (This was after probably 6000 rounds or so). I sold it and bought another one a few years later (WASR10-63). Wood and finish were nicer, but the gun was still sorta trash with haphazard rivets, sights were still slightly canted (but in spec) and the rear sight didn't quite sit flat. I ended up trading it for an A1 Bushmaster later (Along with some cash).
    With the Polish and (especially the Zastava) guns coming in country for basically the same money... I don't know why anyone would pick one of these up these days.
    If you are looking for a Romanian gun, do yourself a favor and stay away from these new WASR imports and look for a deal on an old SAR-1. That's probably the best deal going on a sub $1000 AKM. I was able to pick one up at a gunstore 6 months ago for about $600.00.

      @@strongcontendervideo8906 Yeah, the SAR family of rifles (SAR-1 7.62/SAR-2 5.45/SAR-3 5.56) were all imported during the ban in around 2000. They lack a bayo lug and a threaded barrel but they are also essentially a full on Romanian Military Spec AKM that was actually issued (in Semi Auto form) to their border patrol.
      As stated in novarata.net by Linx310...
      "The SAR (Semi Auto Rifle) series of guns were once the flagship Romanian rifle series until importation ceased in late 2003 and early 2004. These rifles were as close as you can get to a general issue eastern block AKM. They are so close in fact that the stampings to drill the third sear hole are even on the receiver.
      The SAR series came in three “flavors”. The SAR-1, SAR-2, and SAR-3 from which all were imported from 1999-2004.
      Getting a straight answer on why the SAR series ceased importation is hard to come by, most believe that Century Arms and CUGIR could not come to an agreement on price. The other, and more probable is that the BATF gave Century Arms a “Cease and Desist” on SAR importation because when they came in they were not 992 compliant from the start."
      They are truly the closest thing you are going to get to a true Com Bloc Mil Spec AKM.

I don't like the underfolder, but try the kci 20 rounders, you can flip the dong around so it faces forward. I've seen some people shave it down. Me personally I like the Magpul front handguard. The wood makes it too front heavy. If you want a quality mag you can also go for the madsen or the Croatian bho and there were another brand I can't remember but we're also good.
