India's Best Airline is Going Away?? Say Hello (and Goodbye) to VISTARA - Business Class on the 787

  • 9 years ago, India welcomed a new airline - but not just any airline - a premium, full-service airline named Vistara. A joint venture between two formidable companies - TATA Group and Singapore Airlines - Vistara sought to provide travelers a fresh alternative to the dated & dysfunctional Air India and Jet Airways - India's other full service carriers at the time. Passengers were invited to "fly the new feeling" onboard a brand new fleet of Airbus narrowbodies, and, more recently, Dreamliner widebodies - all staffed with crew trained to the highest standards of service.
Launching any new airline is difficult - and unfortunately the pandemic hit just as Vistara was taking delivery of its first widebody airplanes - but management's conservative & practical approach to growth meant the carrier was able to survive COVID and ultimately turn a profit for the first time in 2022.
Vistara almost certainly had a bright future ahead of it as an independent airline, but the market landscape in India had evolved drastically. TATA had recently regained control of Air India - taking the flag carrier private after 70 years of government ownership. And of course from a business standpoint, merging the two operations would be a no brainer - the combined airline would realize the benefits of scale, shared resources, and less competition... but it would also mean the end of the Vistara brand as we know it. Now of course, the integration process (assuming the merger goes through) will likely take a number of years, but given I was already planning a trip to India for this year... I had to give them a try.
So I cordially invite you to fly the new feeling with me on Vistara's FIRST Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Mumbai to London!

Air India is not run by government anymore TATA acquired it back in 2022 and has also ordered new 470 aircrafts from airbus and boeing and i recently travelled in their brand new A350 and it was amazing you should try it too

Yep good point - the point I was trying to make is that when Vistara was launched (and for most of its history), Air India was gov’t run, making it less formidable of a competitor and enabling Vistara to better differentiate. And I’m very jealous you got to fly the AI A350! Looks like a huge improvement over the current product (and ofc it’s a stunner from the outside too) 😎

I was in the Adani Lounge on March 5th, flying Business Class on Vistara. Only 5 passengers were there. Nice and peaceful.

Very clean but underrated vid. I recently flew Air India’s A350 from Bengaluru to Delhi. Didn’t take the business class for a 2 hr long flight, but Premium Economy was quite good too. You should try it someday when you visit us again. Hope you enjoyed your stay in India!

I hope the merger with Air India will not affect the service quality of Vistara in a bad way. Air India has a bad rep for in-flight service and bad equipment.

Totally agree- Air India CEO referenced not getting rid of the Vistara brand until Air India can meet or exceed the product/service levels of Vistara, which I really hope is true

Well they wont be integrated until Air India brings up its service level up to that of Vistara's and it was officially said by the CEO

That lounge is great.. used it just before lockdown flying Lufthansa.
As for only 30 mins in lounge, their own fault for only turning up 2 hours before take off.. if I’m flying business, I’m getting to airport 3 hours ahead to make the most of a lounge!!

While they love to claim that they are the best airline of India, my own experience of Vistara showed me that they are the worst of all. I did a trip from Delhi to Mumbai on economy class with Vistara recently and just because the plane was about one hour late, they decided to depart from Delhi without even having all the passengers luggage on board. Most of the passengers who had their luggage left back are on the economy class, because the Business class and the Premium class have a different line at the airport and had all their luggage sent onboard. About twenty passengers + from economy class could not find their luggage at arrival all because the airline had decided to depart even without having all the luggage onboard. The passengers were informed at arrival that their luggage had been left behind so as not to delay the plane anymore. It has to be said that unlike most airlines who ask for feedback from all passengers after a trip, economy class passengers do not have the option of leaving their feedback and this is for a good reason. They clearly don't care about the economy class passengers. If they did, they would be careful with their clients belongings and avoid such a situation. I was supposed to have a correspondance to Mauritius after this flight and I was so lucky that my flight had been rescheduled one day later. Or else, I wouldn't have been able to get my luggage before leaving India. This is why never again, I will book a flight with Vistara or will I ever recommend this airline to anyone. I've travelled on a lot of airlines before but it is the first time I see one plane voluntarily allowed to take off without all the luggage of the passengers. And they do not even inform the passengers about this.
