    I’m currently 37 weeks and was just diagnosed with GBS yesterday by my midwife (She gave me an info pamphlet on this condition along with other possible things I could experience during pregnancy since this is my first baby, but I never expected to get it myself as it’s seemed so rare). She was very quick to inform me not to stress myself out too deeply but to stay informed on the matter and educate myself for ease of mind. I wish I had done my research so much earlier, life was so hectic during my early pregnancy I didn’t even consider this to become a possibility. 😭

    I was GBS positive with my first baby and didn’t know about it until I got to the hospital and they were like, “So you were GBS positive, time for a 4 hour antibiotic drip.” Now, my labor ended up being 32 hours from start to finish and baby girl really stalled out, so I had plenty of time for that antibiotic, but…still. Vitamin c will also help strengthen your babies amniotic sac which is the best defense against positive gbs. I had it my last pregnancy and after doing a ton of research decided against the antibiotics and opted for close monitoring of the baby and would treat baby if need be so that he could have my breastmilk, not all messed up by the antibiotics. The antibiotics lead to a much increased risk for other infections including C. Diff and do not protect baby from post birth infections which made up a lot of that number. Mom and baby can experience thrush. Not worth it

      I am so sorry you experienced this! It’s really a shame how undermined us momma’s can be in this process when it comes to medical care and assistance with pregnancy.
      I’m also a Florida resident not far from Ocala area. If you ever need a recommendation in the future for yourself or anyone else, Riverbend Midwifery has been an absolute godsend for my first pregnancy! I’m 37 weeks now and was diagnosed yesterday with GBS (we were given an informational pamphlet on the condition early on in pregnancy, so she made sure we were mentally prepared for this in advance), my midwife Rosalie was very informative on the matter and even reassured me it wouldn’t impact my home birth plan- that she’d simply bring the antibiotic drip in case it was requested by me.
      She also made sure I was informed on the effects of the antibiotic and that it can strip away the good bacteria along with the bad one. Hasn’t pressured me one bit on my decisions and has kept me informed and calm through this whole experience- even before my diagnosis with GBS. 💞
      I hope this can help!

    Hey Bridget, I'd love for you to expand on how to care for a newborn after receiving antibiotics. I've seen lots of lotions and drops with certain pre/ probiotics for infants and I am curious to learn more about that. When I asked my OB about IV antibiotics during labor, she said the baby is unaffected because they are "sterile" without a microbiome built up yet. Not totally sure what that means! I was GBS positive at 7 weeks, so super early--but later didn't have it... However I am labeled as "GBS positive" and "have to" have IV antibiotics during labor. I'm okay with this, I would just love to know more about how I can help my baby build up his immune system/ microbiome as soon as possible after birth. Thank you for your content! - Palmer

I was at a fence about it at first because I know the bacteria can come and go. One concern is that I am allergic to penicillin, also that my baby's immune system is going to compromise after antibiotics. I don't see a reply to your question, however did you ever find any good information on what to do to help a newborn strengthen their immune system?

      @qnt859 I'm in a similar situation right now. I'm 37 weeks and I tested positive for gbs and I also have developed a uti from the gbs. Currently taking antibiotics for the uti and I feel sicker then i did before. I was told I have to have iv drip during labour bc of my gbs positive result but I've heard so many things about it I'm just not sure what to even do. My midwife's been so vague with it and very rude even, telling me off for "googling" things and said "I can see you like to google things and that it makes you worry when you do. But it's not my fault I'm researching for myself since she hasnt been giving me any important information about it. I'm also allergic to penicillin and have to have different antibiotics, also my first ever pregnancy. This whole pregnancy I've had no end of stress and no doctor or midwife's really been listening to me at all. I have no idea what to do, I'm only 19 years old and I'm having issues, I feel like it's my fault if I give my son gbs when he's born.
      I feel impending doom but no one's listening to me at all. I feel i don't have a choice to not take the antibiotics, they've been extremely bossy with me and basically given me no other options or information.

      @@Nigglesandshitzhey! I am 37 weeks monday, and just found out I’m GBS+. I currently have a UTI and am on antibiotics for it as well. Which really has been quite the bummer and uncomfortable. I think it’s awesome you are Googling and trying to research to make the best decision- I’m doing the same! It’s a shame your midwife is shaming that and I’m sorry you’re having to deal with the negativity. I am on the fence trying to figure out what to do as there are so many pros and cons to both sides. My midwife does support me choosing antibiotics or not, and this is the protocol she just started me on. Thought it might give you a starting point!
      Jarrow Probiotics fem dophilis- take as directed. Can use intravaginally and orally. (I got mine off Amazon)
      Boost Vitamin C in your diet e.g. eat 2 grapefruits a day. Other good sources of Vitamin C: red peppers, oranges, and kiwi fruit. Consider supplementing 3000mg of vitamin C a day.
      Drink a cup of Echinacea tea each day. Alternatively 30 drops 3 times a day of Echinacea tincture could be taken.
      Supplement with Bee Propolis - as directed.
      Zinc as directed
      I also have been reading of taking raw garlic daily and some women put garlic and coconut oil on a pad in their underwear before bed. Also eating foods like sauerkraut, yogurt (foods high in lactobacillus)! I have a meeting with my midwife Tuesday to talk about further options. Praying all goes well and you feel calm the rest of your pregnancy 🫶🏼

      @@Nigglesandshitzwanted to add, be careful starting the vitamin c until you’re done with your antibiotic round. I read the high acid can dilute the antibiotics or mess with the effectiveness. As a nurse, I want you to know it’s perfectly normal to have a GBS overgrowth down there. It is a bacteria that already lives on the body, but does not necessarily belong/originate in the vaginal area. Simply being pregnant weakens the immune system and can cause people to feel symptoms, but for the most part it’s asymptomatic. I am also pregnant and have GBS. If I wasn’t a nurse, and didn’t see how common it is in the labor and delivery units at the hospital, I’d be freaking out, but trust me when I say it’s very common. You aren’t alone. There are tons of different bacterias that live in or on specific parts of our bodies. While they belong and colonize in those parts, they sometimes make their way to other parts of the body where they don’t belong. These things accidentally happen and it’s not anyone’s fault. As this girl says, so many women deliver healthy babies despite GBS. I hope this gives you some peace.

      It should not affect home birth for those who are positive with GBS, I’m currently pregnant with my first with a planned home birth, and was diagnosed yesterday with GBS. My midwife informed me that it won’t impact our home birth experience, and that she’d just be sure to have the antibiotic drip on hand in case I decided to use it during the labor process.
      She was also very informative on the effects of the antibiotics and the fact that it not only takes the bad bacteria but the good bacteria we want the baby to take as well, and did not pressure me either way on what choice was best for me as I wanted to do more research first. Thankful for her and her support!
      I know other midwives may have different ways they do their work and what they provide may be different, though. So, hopefully this information is accurate!

      C-section would have no effect in regards to GBS. Not that C-sections are safer than vaginal births, but in regards infecting your baby with GBS, c-section is a safer way of preventing any GBS from reaching your baby because then they do not travel through the vaginal canal and the GBS has no way of making its way to the baby’s mucous membranes.

      Hi, my doctor kept dissuading me from re-testing and I couldn't convince her. She basically said even if the retest is negative they would give antibiotics to be safe. At the hospital no one seemed to remember about GBS surprisingly, but I was a little scared at the last moment and I told them about it so they gave me antibiotics.

      When I asked to be retested, my doctor went into all the reasons why that was silly and tried to reassure me that antibiotics were fine, but at the end reluctantly agreed to let me retest at 39 weeks because you as the patient have the right to request or decline whatever you want, but I was still positive unfortunately. I asked about a chlorhexidine rinse during labor that is the standard in Europe, but they said even if I do that they’ll treat it as if I had done nothing because I declined antibiotics, and I’ll be strongly advised to stay 48 hours extra for monitoring. Again, you have the power. They can’t force you to stay or be injected with anything, but they can strongly shame/guilt trip you and mark you as AMA (against medical advice) which could affect whether they want to continue appointments and caring for you, and they threaten that insurance may not cover your bills then either… really, the system is set up to bully you when you dare to question anything or request more options and knowledge. But again, they can’t make you do anything, even if the language they use makes it sound like it’s required (“we require”, “if *blank* then you will…”, etc)

      Same. I’m still going to try to get rid of it before labor, so I switched to garden of life probiotic which is stronger than the 5bil cfu one I was taking prior to my positive test. Thinking about taking garlic and drinking kefir too. Really want to retest and see if I can avoid antibiotics. The hospital can do a rapid GBS test.

    Genuinely confused as to why everyone doesn’t receive the antibiotics if you can test negative for it but still could have it at the time of birth?!

    • @EricaGriffin
      @EricaGriffin 2 года назад +1

      Because that would be A LOT of unnecessary treatment of antibiotics in healthy women and infants. It’s a controversial treatment to begin with. This is why the UK doesn’t even bother screening. Most babies exposed to b strep go on to be healthy with zero complications. Antibiotic resistance is dangerous from over treatment from this just like this. We also worry about side effects and long term consequences on infants from interrupting important immune system development. At some point we will have a vaccine for b strep and this prophylactic nonsense will be a thing of the past. 30% of women and infants exposed to antibiotics, of whom A LARGE PERCENT don’t need them, should be motivation enough.

    Hey Bridget, my OB told me the antibiotics don't harm the good bacteria. Do I have to take the antibiotics or can I refuse? I think I need to do a bit more research because I feel a little uneasy about this. She did not swab she told me that I tested positive in my first urine sample. Since you are saying that it changes throughout pregnancy now I am skeptical and don't know what to do. I'm 36 weeks...

    • @Cabbage-dk6nu
      @Cabbage-dk6nu 4 года назад

      So, testing positive in urine sample indicates a very high colonization level that is unlikely to go completely away over the course of pregnancy, which is why they generally consider a positive urine test a fairly definitive sign it will be present during labor as well.

      Antibiotics kill EVERYTHING and on top of that if some remain they are no immune to the Antibiotics used. This actually happens often.

      Don’t be worried I was positive early in my pregnancy then positive again at 38 weeks I was given antibiotics both times first time cleared after antibiotics waiting for results for this time round but I will be given antibiotics intravenous during labour everything will be okay after birth they will make sure baby hasn’t got the infection by keeping an eye on him for 12 hours I was worried but the odds he will have it is quite low. Midwifes are amazing and will help u get through it x
