  • Taylor Guitars started in 1974, born out of a small California guitar shop called The American Dream. From those humble beginnings, Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug worked diligently crafting acoustic guitars and building a company. Along the way they faced their share of challenges but continued to learn and adapt. Bob Taylor and Company have embraced that "can do" attitude again, in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic to produce a new series of affordable American made guitars as the American Dream Series. Utilizing the Grand Pacific, round-shoulder dreadnought body, the American Dream series takes a focused approach to the acoustic guitar with thin and resonant finishes and fantastic round tone. The series has a total of six models available. The AD17e comes with a Spruce top with Ovangkol back and sides and is also available as a satin blacktop version the AD17eBLK. Either guitar can be purchased without the ES2 system as the AD17 or AD17BLK. The AD27e and AD27 feature a Mahogany top with Sapele back and sides. Each guitar includes Taylor Guitar's new Aerocase.

As an old guy who has had many different guitars over the years, here’s my advice. If you feel like your music is a high enough priority, just save your money twice as long ... good things come to those who wait. The difference between a 700 dollar guitar and a 1200-1500 dollar guitar is stunning, not subtle. The enhanced playability, response, dynamic range and tone will be very apparent when you get it in your hands. I can personally recommend these American Dream Taylors as well as the Martin 15, 16 and 17 series guitars (compare the Martin DSS-17 to this Taylor AD17 Black Top). Blueridge has some nice ones too (but go for the solid wood models). So, sacrifice a little bit now to procure an instrument that can take you to another level of musicality. If you settle for something less now, you’ll probably sell it at a loss later and end up paying more for what you really wanted in the first place. Just exercise some budgetary maturity and self control - it’ll be worth it. Anyway, I had to learn this the hard way! In any case I hope you find a great guitar that speaks to you at a good price. Keep on pickin’.

Good advice. This is usually the rule, but there are exceptions. For example I just bought a 200$ yamaha fg800 this year that is absolutely amazing and I like it just as much as my D18ge, hd28v, and Guild D20.
I don't expect them all to be as great as mine, maybe I got lucky, but you can have a very great instrument for a lot less nowadays. And I believe the gap in quality is closing more and more every year.

I’ve checked out the 300 and GT series and they were at the top of my list. Then today I went out on a whim and tried an AD17 even though I wasn't sure I'd like a Dread/GP. I was blown away, it had the best feel and sound of anything in my price range and was much cheaper than the 300 series. I fell in love. And thanks to my wonderful wife I now have my early 60th birthday present.

I just got mine yesterday from Alamo Music in downtown San Antonio, TX! Nick hooked me up with my new love. This beauty is almost impossible to put down. The value and quality of this guitar is RIDICULOUS!! I got the natural spruce top and I didn’t think I would like it because of the pictures that I saw. Plus, next to the black top (which steals the show) I thought the natural looked lame...BUT I WAS WRONG! They are BEAUTIFUL...and it’s a subtle beauty. Andy Powers is a true artist! Also, I am a married guy with two babies (VERY TIGHT BUDGET), and to know that Taylor made this guitar for people like me in this time of COVID19 has made me fall in love with Taylor as a company. Seriously, I’m a overwhelmed with gratitude to Andy and Bob for doing such a thing. The guitar plays and sounds INCREDIBLE!! It hits me in my soul every time I pick it up and strum it. I’m straight up in love...I’m going have to be SUPER intentional about showing my wife attention over the next few months. THANK YOU AGAIN NICK @ ALAMO MUSIC!!! You really took care of me!!

I'm a huge Taylor fan. Love how they shifted gears so fast to pump out this American Dream line which is thinking outside the box and provides USA made affordability. I speculate the Grand Pacific was used to boost its sales and acceptance within the community, and is a good guitar although too big a body for me. Expand the American Dream line to GA or Concert and sales will likely increase more (even to a GS-mini that blacktop would be awesome!). The key that draws me to Taylor guitars , other than their product satisfies my personal requirements, is their resistance to not be contained with traditional parameters and quality is always #1. Every Taylor looks like it was replicated from a Star Trek replicator but each is unique and doesn't look like it was printed out on repeated HPL.

I agree completely with your comment. However, I doubt that these will ever be available in the Grand Auditorium body style because that steal sales from both the 214 and the 314, but I would love the have the black top one in a concert body style. It would definitely make a cool GS Mini too. I just bought a Koa GS-Mini in March. I didn’t know about the Plus model until a few days after I bought mine, but I love mine so I don’t know if I’ll upgrade or not.

I purchased an AD27e back in November. I had just started to take lessons again after a long, long layoff. I found that my old Epiphone Calabro was too beat up and broken to effectively play and learn on. I am so glad I purchase the Taylor to restart my learning. The sound is pleasing, it is easy to play and after almost 5 months of ownership the AD27e is finally begun to settle in and stay in tune with just minimal adjustments. Once I realized that I liked learning to play again I took my old Epiphone to a local Luthier and he put the guitar back in great shape so I now have 2 decent acoustic guitars to learn on. If you think this guitar might be the one for you do yourself a favor and go to your locally run music shop, such as Alamo Music Center, and try one of the AD series in the shop. I went to an old trusted music shop in the DC area and received a great deal on my Taylor.

I don't completely understand the criticism directed at taylor and its new guitars. If you don't like it, don't buy it. It does not seem to me that they have claimed to be helping beyond the ways that they can. I think taylor have a good enough track record of being conscientious of the people on both ends of their supply chain, for example, their sourcing of ebony.

      @AlamoMusic  4 года назад +8

They are both really similar guitars! The 314 CE is easy to play has a great tone, low action, and a cutaway to help you reach high notes. The American dream differs in the fact that is has no cutaway. I wouldn't recommend one over the other, but the American Dream is a great value for the price and I would say it can play up there at the same level as the 314 CE. It has also have a very warm tone! Hope this helps!

I love when competition drives new products to come about, but let's be honest, this series is all about Taylor putting a product out in the market to compete with Gibson's G45 series. Nothing wrong with that, it's just clear that's one of the factors at play here. Kind of a hole in value market for a Taylor round shoulder, now that hole is filled. Hope Alamo Music Center is doing well and I hope you guys sell a ton of these, you make great videos and I always look forward to watching whatever you put up next.

Wish Taylor would make more affordable 12 fret guitars. I’ve got my eye on the 322, but it’s more than I can comfortably pay.

I am very new to guitar but I understand that different string types sound and feel differently. Why did Taylor switch from Elixir to D'addario strings for the American Dream series? I'm just now learning about different strings, so is there a musical reason for this switch or is it a cost savings?

I havent seen one of these here in Canada yet let alone played one. I was curious about playability. Another review said that the neck was on the "chunky" side. Has anyone who may have played one of these found the same?

      Hello from
Canada and i bought the ad27. The neck is beefy but not chunky. I came from playing a skinny neck 1.68 nut width. It took a day for me to get used to the 1.75nut and beefier neck.

I always love your videos. They are enjoyable and educational! This is exceptionally good. I own 614ce, 714ce and Spruce Top GS mini and love them! However, I’m still looking for a more traditional and bigger sound with less treble harshness, like AD, Grand Pacific or a Martin. I can’t get to a music store to test them out. I would love to hear a video comparing these guitars with the other grand Pacific guitars. I have a good friend that swears by his Martin D 18 and it does sound and feel really good to play. Can any of the Grand Pacific shaped Taylors provide what I want to hear? Many folks seem to prefer Martin dreads for their sound. I mostly fingerpick and sing but some strumming.

Hi What I can say here is that the Black coloured one sounds best to me but with regard to my own possession to keep at home, I would like to own the Mahogany one as it is pleasing to my ears as the very high pitched sound is not there as felt in my ear unlike the other two. But I will prefer to the Black coloured guitar if I wanna perform on the stage as it has more chime. That's my own feeling.

Alamo Music Center Ease of playability, full sound( which I heard when you played the Martin 15M . I kinda lean towards Martin as I’ve always wanted one and this historic one is a great price! I know you’re a Martin man too, so I really trust your input. After playing both the Taylor and Martin, did the Martin do it for you more than the Taylor. I’m thinking yes lol Alamo is lucky 🍀 having someone like you who is so knowledgeable and talented. It helps that you communicate so clearly! I watch all your videos! Tell your boss 😁. Is the Martin 15M in stock? If not what’s the timeframe for ordering and receiving one. I live on Long Island, NY. Any information would be appreciated. Stay safe 😷

    • @AlamoMusic

They are both fantastic open sounding guitars with a very warm tone. The Martin has a lot of roundness on the attack. The Taylor, while rounder than other Taylor models has more articulation than the Martin. It depends on your playing style in which would be better. The Martin could sound dulled with some playing styles. The Taylor might sound too bright with others. If you strum a lot you light lean to the Taylor but either would be great. The Martin factory was closed for a longer period of time than Taylor and guitars are going to be more difficult to find as a result. Thank you so much for watching btw!
