Honda Power Steering Noise Quick Fix

- We are addressing a problem that plagued Honda vehicles of this year range. Power Steering Noise due to a failed O-ring on the inlet hose. In this video we walk through the very easy steps to replace this O-ring at home without any professional mechanic needed.
Thank you for making this video. It cost me almost a thousand dollars to fixed my wife’s car, and its still making noise. After watching this video, I tried it with my other car. Only cost me $1.00 for the o-ring, and $5.00 for a 10mm wrench, and the noise when away. Had a hard time taking apart and put back it together, but I did it. Thanks Kial.
I’ve been a mechanic in some capacity for a long time and I love your encouragement for the DIYer. Well done sir.
Just did this fix on my '10 CRV, and watching you do it make this a lot more straight forward. Thanks for the video!
Hi after you replaced it how long did it last?
One of the best auto videos I've watched online. Almost feel like I'm watching and learning right next to you. Very clear and concise speaking. Much appreciated man thanks for the knowledge ❤️
It is CRUCIAL to use Honda-specific power steering fluid in Honda cars. The pumps are designed to only work with fluid of a lower viscosity than other manufacturers; “universal” power steering fluid is thicker and will not let the pump pull as much fluid as it needs, causing this awful noise. Good video.
Ben the Go-Fast Kid it does not cause this noise putting in wrong fluid , what it will mean is your power steering rack will wear out quicker
P
As a Honda tech of 9 years this is just not true
@@iamasmurf1122 I had a third party mechanic put aftermarket generic pump fluid in and that's when the noise started on mine.

Thanks you saved me a lot of money and time. I’d recommend also changing out the fluid at the same time. This car sat for a week and the fluid still had tiny air bubbles in it. O-ring and new fluid made it run like new.
Thank you. Your Quick Fix save me $575 from buying a new Power Steering pump. I have replaced "O" ring cost me $2.75 and that fixed my Noisy Power Steering. Very easy replacing "O" ring. Took me 10 minutes and i was done.
575? that seems a little too much
I’m a recent purchaser of a 2010 Ridgeline. When temperatures dropped the power steering whine began so I found myself on RUclips searching for a solution. Although it may not be everyone’s answer to stop that whine it just so happened to be mine. I got the o-ring directly from Honda for 90¢, replaced it the following cold morning and just like that, no more whine. Thank you so much for posting this video.
Did you need to bleed the air out?
@@supernintendo7579 I did not, the sound went away immediately upon the next start.
This video was really helpful. I was able to fix my 1999 Honda Accord power steering pump that kept whining for days.
Hey Kyle, thanks tons for your video! My wife hadn’t driven her 2010 Accord for the 3 weeks I’d been out of town. The morning after I returned she pointed out that same power steering whining your DIY Video explained. A quick trip to the Honda parts counter, 10 minutes under the hood and $3.19 later and the whining was gone! Please keep your videos coming, Your The Best! I’m subscribing now.
Thanks buds, I’m in Mexico with a 2006 CRV I picked up with the power steering noise.
Your fix was instant. Picked up a wrench and an o ring kit, 5 minutes later fixed.
Awesome. Thanks 🙏 Chuck
I’ve had 2 recalls performed on my Honda, both regarding the power steering and still had the whine. This video helped me finally eliminate the whine. I am SO grateful.
As an FYI, the 1st recall was to replace the power steering reservoir cap, and the 2nd was to replace the host just after the pump, which involved a fluid change.
Thanks for the keeping it straight forward, real approach to us, novices. Hopefully will try today! Keep up great work!
Notes to self:
Power steering gasket upper and entry
Power steering reservoir/filter screen
Power steering line
Then pump if needed.
This simple fix did the trick for me. Thanks for sharing this information. Saved a bundle from not having to replace the whole power steering pump.
Thank you so much! Fixed my annoying noise with not much hassle. God bless!
Thank you for the instruction. You just saved me hundreds of dollars. The whining noise disappeared instantly, after I cycled the steering end to end a dozen or so times.
Your tip got the job done. My pump is quiet as a church mouse. Also Honda Fluid is the right way to go. Thank you regards from Brazil 🇧🇷
Awesome - Thanks! Ten minute job, solved the problem instantly. Regarding comments below, I used the orange O-ring, and just replaced the intake side. The fluid in the reservoir was full of bubbles before, now mostly smooth. Saved at least hundreds!
So my power steering reservoir is filled with bubbles too, will this seal replacement take care of that? Which part is the intake?
@@rotfskywalker2107 The inlet is the hose that goes to the power steering pump from the fluid reservoir.
Thank you for this helpful video, I just bought an 03 CLS and it had this issue, all the fluid had spilled out and after I filled it back up it got quiet. Now I know what leaks to look for and if bad o rings are the cause I know how to replace. Thanks again
I would add to replace the top o ring of the power steering pump top hose as well at the same time. Two 10mm bolts on top, o rings cost $6.30 at dealer in 2023. Honda Fluid is golden in color, so it could be mistaken for an oil leak. Thank you for the video! Noise is gone, saved $$$$$!
Thanks for commenting this, gonna try replacing both o rings for $10 today. Hoping this fixes my issue! 🤞
Thank you for the video. I would highly recommend using that towel to catch the fluid, and to catch the bolt. It was great fun fishing that bolt out of the engine in the Honda dealership parking lot.
Great video! I'm going to work on my Honda Ridgeline and see if I can get rid of this noisy problem. Your information and content was spot on. Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for this video you explained and showed perfectly. Def a big help right here not many people would give cheap good fix
Great video and I subscribed. Scotty Kilmer site sent me the link to your video. I have 05 CRV. I'm old and my hands shake so a week ago I had a mechanic change the O rings and after watching your video I decided to try this and discovered that the mechanic had used a larger ring pushed up into the housing and not over the intake line. I changed it with a fairly tight fitting O ring and drove just a little and noticed a difference. With mechanic tomorrow, we will flush the line and put in new Honda fluid along with 10% of total capacity with Lucas PS stop leak. Hope that works. Thanks.
Thanks for the informational video! God bless you bro!
Yep, purchased the 0 ring today. 5 minute fix and it has stopped the whine. Thank you.
Thanks a lot. your video helped me eliminate the noise. I'm not a mechanic at all, I bought keys and rings and I managed to do it in 10 minutes. thanks again.
Absolutely made my day with this! My sons car was doing this exact thing. Changed the o ring and what do you know!!! :) :) :) I am so excited this was the fix! Thank you very much!
Thanks for the confidence to do the fix myself Instead of going to stealerships
Stealerships lol... That's a good one...
Appreciate you taking the time to make this, mins is making that noise right now, im gonna try it
Thank you for the tip, I just bought 2006 odyssey at the auction and has the same exact problem, I'll try that before taking it to the mechanic.
It always quiets down when the car warms up, but it is a wonderful fix to try. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this info! I was certain I would need a new pump until I saw this and thought it was worth a shot.
I bought an o-ring kit from Amazon for less than $10, a known reputable brand of course.
In my case I just could not get anything on that bolt to loosen it. I hate to be that guy that blames his tools but if my 10mm wrench was a little shorter I think it would have worked out. Instead I had to basically remove the whole pump to get to the bolt, so it turned into a bit of a bigger job than this shows, but I still got it done. I replaced both o-rings just because, and whaddya know it immediately made a big difference. After a few days of driving the real reward came. My van is quieter than it has been in a long time. The whine must have been there less noticeably long before it became obvious enough to hear distinctly. In my case the steering had actually started to get very heavy at parking lot speed which is also why I was sure I would need a pump, but it is good as new now. Thanks again for this tip, saved me some cash and kept a perfectly good part out of the scrapyard.
The kit you used, is it available in amazon? could u share the name or link to the o-ring kit?
Thanks, I replaced that o-ring and the noise went away! Appreciate the help.
100% worked thank you! Got the car cheap because of this problem only cost me 3.00 to fix
Great video and very helpful.
Great video, very helpful, thanks!!
Thanks for your precise showing and now I understand about it.
Thank you so much for the video. Took care of my 07 accord. Pump was quiet just a few seconds after restarting the engine. Like many others I thought I needed to replace the pump.
Great content. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so very much Kyle, it worked for me perfectly, not only noise fixed but also smooth turning now.
Awesome video. Saved me alot of time and money.
I just got done replacing my alternator and radiator on my 2003 honda odyssey and my van is making the same noise and when i checked my power steering fluid i had bubbles in it so i thought i would have to replace the power steering pump i guess ill try the O ring first and go from there thanks for the tip. Man youtube is a wonderful thing
Did this yesterday on a 2004 odyssey and instantly fixed the problem. Thanks!!!!
Is there a specific name of the o ring or they all the same when I go to the Honda dealer
Excelent !! thanks for sharing it is going to save many of us a lot of time and money
simple fix
Thank you very much for your great video and very clear explanation, 👍🙏
Thanks. Worked like a charm!
Worked on my 97 ACCORD
THANKS
GREAT INFO!
Thank you for sharing. great job. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
My '09 Accord made the same noise some time last year. I did some research and it all pointed out at the O-ring (the one on the intake suction). It was easy to replace. The noise went away.
Where did you purchased the oring ?
@@kirkfavila8106 amazon
It worked, thank you. I subscribed 👍🏼
This guy just saved me like $800. Thanks man.
Thanks for sharing. Very helpful.
Hey, thanks for checking out the video, I hope it helps you solve your power steering noise issues. Sorry for the camera work, I'm working with a new camera and well... I have a LOT to learn.
I thought your filming was excellent, but your explanation was so encouraging to us DYI folks, really appreciate the help,it really is the little things in life, that help the most, thanks so much for your video.😊👍🇺🇸
Thank you sir. You just teach me how to fix my Honda i have this problem for a month now your video help
Job DONE! Thank you sir!
Thank you very much for the information-very helpful.
Thank you so much man!!! Saved me money!!!
Thanks my honda was foaming power steering fluid and back flowing out of the resivoure. This fixed it.
Just had put a pump on my 07 accord and the noise was still there 😩Thanks for the video👍🏿
Is it the squealing noise that's because the alternator belt probably got some fluid on it you have to replace the alternator belt unless the noise that you're hearing is the actual steering pump whining
Thanks for the help. I was prepared to do the pump but changing O-rings fixed the noise. In better light I noticed the PS fluid reservoir had overflowed (when it was fine before) so an air leak was definitely the culprit. Good thing I watched this video because the pump I was going to get wouldn't have included the inlet tube and gasket, so I'd have had to re-use the (junk) old one and had the same problem. I didn't buy or have a multi-ring variety pack, so I bought a Dorman 926-157 kit (available locally) which has the two correct O-rings. It's literally a 5-minute job if you don't drop anything like a flashlight or the bolt down into the engine bay.
thought our pump was bad. after seeing this video picked an 0-ring for under $2 & noise was gone. thanks for the info
Great video, thanks brother!
My pump looks dirty just like this one. It seems dealer would rather charge $1,000 to replace a power steering pump than $75 for 1/2 hour labor and $2 for a .10 seal. Definitely not surprised by that!
Nice video, I fixed my element in 15 minutes!
Thank you 🤙🏽 will try it on 05 crv ! Be safe!
Does it worked on your crv?
Excellent video thank you for the great info
This video fixed our van. Awesome thing for us. Mahalo
I use a method to bleed out the air in this fashion. Raise the front wheels and manually turn wheels left and right several times with the engine OFF. Another successful method is to use a hand held vacuum pump and to pull the air from the system thru the fill tube on the pump.
Thank you fixed my 2008 accord, so much easier to change, it right on top. thanks again !!!!
What size are the rings?
mine started doing this recently, especially when it's been -20's windchill ... I was ready to order a pump but I'm going to try this first ... I'll post the results, thanks for making this video
Very informative video. Thank you.
Thank you! You just saved me about $250.00 ! Problem solved for $1.68
Beautiful thanks good information
Thank you for making this video !! You saved me over 500€!!

Thanks for the post. I did this and it save me some $$
Thank you your video helped and worked as well no more noise I will flush it and add new power steering fluid as well thank you sir you’re the man
Thanks for sharing this.
This video was very useful
I bought the o ring from Honda dealer and fluid comes to $11.xx
Well worth it
I have the power steering pump from O’Reily that now I have to return $233 😅
Thank you
Thank you , this is very helpful. I have the exact car with that problem. Unfortunately I had to let the car sit in the driveway for about a year and not most of the PS fluid is drained out of the reservoir. I started it today and pulled the cap and it is sucking air like a Quadrajet! I have some investigation to do!
TL;DR: Thanks for saving me $450!
My '02 Accord has been plagued with power steering problems since I bought it second hand in 2015.
First, I had to replace the rack and pinion. That fixed the buzzing noise for about a year. Then, it got cold again and the pump started complaining about it. Every morning feels like I'm waking up the whole neighborhood with my power steering buzz.
I've been going to my Honda guy for 20 years and I trust him. He's taken care of a lot of things for me for not bad prices. However, with this specific problem, he told me that it was a hose leak that was going to take $450 to repair.
I bought the O-rings for $15 at my local auto parts store and spent the morning replacing both the top and bottom rings. The top ring seemed fine, but the bottom ring was dry rotted and brittle. It splintered apart when I squeezed it. Unfortunately, the pump to reservoir hose was dry rotted as well and got damaged in the replacement. I had to go back to the store to get a new hose, about $12, and I have been laughing my ass off all the way back home. It suddenly turned into a much, much quieter drive!
Definitely worth taking a Sunday to fix this chronic problem. Solved it with about $30, some time, and some elbow grease. Much thanks for the video!
What a great job and excellent video !!! New sub here
Your the man thanks for the knowledge. My car sounds just like that.
thanks for your smart feed back, congratulations
Thank you for the tip..
Great video and much thanks. This saved us from having to go to the repair shop and be days without a car and possibly an expensive pump replacement.
You saved me a pump ! No lie thank you !
Did this with my 2005 accord and its very easy, the hoses and bolts are very easy to access on it, the bolts are on top.
You derserve my subcription bro. I got the same problem. Imma try this one out
Thank you for video Sir. Do something v/clip more Sir...👍
Well done Sir!!!!
I'm going to give this a try...For 5 years I''e asked Honda dealers and Honda mechanics about this noise I could hear...and told them it was coming
from this pump...and they basically denied even hearing it. It was never loud enough to be a huge problem...but I give Honda and these mechanics a Big Red F...especially since the previous years had a recall...
Nice job guy 👍😃
Great video
And im gonna thank you in advance 😊 bc im confident it'll work , nothing to lose ,..thanks
Going to change mine, I have a 2011 CRV LX. Making similar noise... Thanks for the video!
Me to a 2014 did you try it?
Great job sir. Very Helpful.
