Very Common Honda Buzzing/Whining/Humming Noise

- This is a very common issue on Honda Oddysey, Ridgeline, Pilot and with the 3.5 Liter engine. many technicians/ Mechanics confuse this alternator noise with a power steering noise. I'm going to show you how to figure it out.
Авто/Мото
I have a 2011 Honda Pilot.....that was the problem!!!!!! My car was humming just like yours in the video. I could have sworn it was the power steering or the idler....but it wasn't. I disconnected the alternator and the sound stopped.....You are the best for posting this!! You saved me from buying the wrong parts! pure genius! Keep it up Hektor!
Gla it helped. Thanks for subscribing 👍🏼
What exactly do you mean the idler?
@@HomieHektor can I run it like this for awhile or it needs to be changed ?
I had a similar whirling/whining noise from my 2007 Honda Civic. It was in fact caused by low power steering fluid level. This noise happened during acceleration and I had no issues with steering.
The very simple way to know if it is power steering is to check your power steering fluid levels. Too easy. Check your manual index in the back and it will tell you the page where the power steering fluid cap is. Mine was in the upper left corner looking at engine with hood open. If fluid is below the two lines, and you can see the fluid shadow from outside, then get some Honda power steering fluid and fill it up between the two lines. If that is your only issue, it will fix the problem with the noise. Be sure to use only Honda power steering fluid. If you go to Auto Zone, they have their own brand, but it says specifically Honda only on it. I’m sure others may have that, too.
This is the quickest and simplest way to rule out power steering or to determine if this is all you need to fix the whirling/whining noise. No sense taking things apart or buying parts you don’t need until you’ve done this first.
This is the exact sound I was troubled by. Now I know what my car problem is. Thanks heaps man!
Did you replace the alternator? I have the same problem
Same here it was your alternator?
@@jdm_em186 the sound somehow disappears. Do not why, but the car is twenty years old .

How do you fix it?
DUDE!!! Ive been hunting this F’ing!! noise for a year how!! The damn dealer refused to admit it was “unusual” that my 40k mile truck made a whine noise. I unplugged it and sure enough, damn whine went away. THANK YOU!!!!!
You ran it for a year like that ? I guess I'll keep running it like that till i have issues
Add me to the list that confused this with the power steering pump. Thanks for doing this and helping so many of us! I've been working on my own cars for 50 years and this one stumped me. I changed the Alternator and fixed the problem! Thanks for helping us save time, money and frustration!
Hey dude... Thanks for taking the time to put this video out there. Was thinking the noise was my power steering pump. NOT , was my alternator.
Charlie Edwards that’s awesome, glad it helped 👍🏼
How long did it take for the altinator to go out ?
Terri Gram I can’t remember exactly, but it’s a common problem specially on Honda
I just changed my altanator on my m35 an it's still making a whining sound when I accerlate car would sound amazing if it didnt do that it drives smooth tho

Car been making this noise for 3 weeks and each person told me anything from, the belt, the pulley, the power steering , even a bad spark plug. I knew those werent correct so I been waiting until someone tells me something remotely close to the problem. Thank you for doing this video because google did not even understand the sound, it got mistook for squealing and screeching.
I tried to describe that it makes sound the same sound as remote car makes, still nothing. So thank you!

To me, the best way to describe what my whining sounds like is a power steering pump whine when it’s low on fluid and/or it has air in the power steering system. It could also be described as a supercharger whine but to me it’s more so a power steering pump whine. Anywho, I have an 06 Accord V-6 and my alternator went out about a year and a half ago. I ordered an alternator from RockAuto and installed it myself. Well, about 3 months ago I started hearing a loud high pitched whining noise when I started the car one morning. I originally thought it was the power steering pump because that is what it sounds like when you’re low on power steering fluid. Well, it’s full of fluid and it doesn’t get louder when turning the steering wheel and I put a long rod on the power steering pump and the alternator and placed my ear on the end of the rod and the alternator was way louder than the power steering pump, which led me to think that it’s the alternator and not the power steering pump. Also, I went to RockAuto to check the warranty on the alternator and it was only a 1 year warranty so the alternator was just a few months out of warranty. JUST MY LUCK!!! So, at this point, I’m going to just drive it until the alternator dies!!!
I got the rewwww rewwww sound and it was my alternator bearings. They were shot. Battery tested fine. Alternator bearing was shot and ran for a minute then failed.
This was gold knowledge man. Thanks for sharing. Isnt there still a faint whining noise after you unplug it though? I think my pilot makes that whining noise in your video after you unplug it.
Our 2008 Honda Civic Coupe started doing this same exact noise at high RPMs. Thank you for posting this vid! It was very helpful.
My Honda Civic is doing this too. Was it expensive to fix?
same!
I have the same noise from my 2015 Honda accord LX .
Thanks alot bro .
You saved me lots of money thinking that I had to replaced the electronic power steering pump.

Had the same issue, at first I thought it was a power steering at one point the noise was coming by the transmission, had no check engine light .... replaced the alternator with oem honda parts from Napa auto parts, no more loud noise
.....thanks for your video 👍
I know this sounds like a dumb question but did it affect your shifting in anyway way?
@@mercadoalex0909 , yes because alternator wasn't producing enough power so it does affect the performance of the engine.
Wowow more people need to see this, there's too many hondas being misdiagnosed for this kind of noise. The alternator, i would have never thought. Good video Homie Hektor!
I just replaced my pullies and timing belt because of this sound....
Question, my alternator makes this noise. Is it safe? As in, will it cause any damage to the car? To be honest I don't care about the noise, I just don't want to damage the electrical system. This is on a 2008 Honda Civic which I only purchased 2 months ago (yay)
Thank you very much for the vid! I had that noise on my 04 Accord 2.4 I4 and I could turn the noise on and off just like you did by unplugging the alternator.
There you go now are you Gotta do is change the alternator
The noise is louder when accelerating too. It was driving me crazy. At first I thought it was the belt noise.
Thank you! Been hearing the same noise on my Pilo!😢

It sounds like one of those Hitachi "Magic Wands!"
You nailed that! Thanks for the video man. Respect, you know your shit.
I am getting a humming noise similar to that so I will check it out. Thank you so much!
Had same whine after 3 months of use of napa replacement reman alternator on 2010 Accord EXL v6. thought it was ps pump bc how could a replacement alternator go bad in 3 months?... (Factory Honda one lasted 125k) When ps pump replacement didn't stop noise I used a 2x4 to the ear and isolated the alternator.. pissed...napa rebuild just cost me 2 hours labor plus $150 on ps pump and another 2 hours labor on r and r this alternator for the 2nd time...(pulling elect fan sucked)..found your video and did the connector pull and that confirmed it.. also multimeter at full load was 12.7 old alt and 14.5 new... I just started hearing this noise. I did your test, and i was able to confirm it's the alternator. So, the question is. How do you fix it?
Replace the alternator
@ramblinman7153 yeah, I did replace it. Problem solved.

Hello, congratulations for your work and your youtube channel. I have a question about disconnecting and connecting the green connector of the alternator with the engine running, does it damage the alternator, the ECU, or something ???. I saw that in your scanner it said open diode and I want to know if that was caused by disconnecting and connecting the green connector of the alternator with the engine running ???. since I have a problem with a similar sound in a 2008 honda CR-V and I want to do that test to see if it's the alternator but I don't want to damage anything. I wait your answer. Thank you
I would unplug it with the engine off and then start the car. You would still be able to tell if the noise is gone or not.
I have a Civic doing this. Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks Homie Hektor - nice work! I have a Honda Pilot with this exact noise. Can I just replace the "diode" and not the whole alternator -- will that fix my problem? Will that be cheaper than fixing the whole alternator? Is replacing the diode difficult ?

I don't even need a loud muffler the whining noise makes people move outta my way. 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you! I pulled the connector on the alternator and the noise stopped.
I think this is my issue too , sorry if I missed it but how is this a problem? If it’s just making a noise but it’s all running fine. Or does this mean the alternator is on its way to failing?

Thanks Homie Hektor this is exactly what is wrong with my CR-V saved me a lot of time and money👍👍👍👍👍
What if you use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope on the alternator , would that work instead of unplugging the alternator?
Would this give me a high voltage read when it's hooked up to a computer may sound stupid but I don't know anything about cars and trying to learn
Good trouble shooting Homie Hektor, you broke it down simple- thanks
Thank you my brotha !!
Thanks for the video!
Homie Hektor. thank you for posting this video. question. i just replaces my 2011 honda civic power steering pump due to a huge leak. now, the wheel turns normal and there is no noise like when the steering oil is low or empty. However, i now paying attention to a noise like what you show on the video. it only makes it when i start driving from 1 to 40 miles and it goes away but it sounds like the noise you described. If i unplug the alternator and the noise goes away, should i replaced the alternator?
actually, the generator can be fixed, but people always change not fix it
Can just doing a belt job with tensioner eliminate the humming?
It happened to me twice in Honda Odyssey 2007. The alternator was making whining sound, battery charging was too low and alternator was getting too hot after a short drive.
I had to replace the alternator both times. I noticed that it happened due to jump starting the van. Due to parasitic drain, the battery got drained, I used a jump starter to start the van with almost dead battery, that caused the diode to short in the alternator.
So anytime if the battery is too low, never try to jump start, instead charge the battery first or install a fully charged one. Jump start the van with almost dead battery will fry your alternator. Although if the battery has some power left, where it can provide power to all the accessories, but just not enough to crank the engine, it might be ok to jump start.
But as a caution, I don't jump start my van anymore, and my alternator is healthy.
💯
I have the same problem with my Honda Civic 2007 after I installed the aftermarket stereo. As I start driving, when it reach 3000rpm or more, it creates the reeew sound. I checked my PS steering, they look in great condition. If the problem is the alternator, Is it possible I can still keep driving it for a year? Gotta save money for the new alternator replacement if that’s the problem.
I also have a 2007 Honda Civic making the same noise when driving it. I wonder if the alternator can be fixed or if I have to replace it
My 1.8 civic does this. It also makes a horrible grinding noise when starting the engine. Any ideas? Alternator and starter?
Did you find your problem? I have the same issue.
@@languso13 still there sadly. I don't really like the car so plan to replace the altinator then sell it
I'm having same issue. Swapped alternator, new PS pump, o rings and fluid. Still these 2 noises. I've briefly heard it could be the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) but I don't feel like that explains the grinding at start up. Did you guys figure anything out?

A Raps yes I wasn’t 100% sure I was told the alternator also told it was the tensioner pulley so I replaced both about a month ago... car hasn’t been this quiet since it rolled out the dealer.. after removing the old parts the alternator had a slight rattle... and the tensioner definitely had a ring to it when I spun it..
Finally someone was able to tell me why my damn Acura was going reewwwww rewwww lol

You’re welcome 👍🏼
That sounds exactly like the noise my 05 CRV is making. It does sound like steering pump but the vehicle steers perfectly. I am hopeful that you may have diagnosed this for me... fingers crossed.
I have an 04 and it does this also does yours get slightly louder when you steer by any chance?
2019 honda accord: without starting the car when i engage the parking brake I get a short whirring sound. Is that just the electronic control engaging the brake or do i need to take it in and have it checked?
I’m a Honda tech that’s normal that’s electric motor on rear calipers spinning to engage piston
I currently have a whining sound in my 2010 CR-V. I watched another video that it could be related to a worn o-ring on P/S pump. I will check and I can only check if the P/S reservoir is pumping too much, i.e. there is air and bubbles present.
If not, I will disconnect the green plug of my alternator. Is it safe to unplug and plug back it in while engine is running?
I don't have a check engine light or battery low voltage.
Is there a risk if the alternator is passing AC current?
Thank you so much. My car just started making this noise and smells like burned wires. Time for another project.
Reeeewwwww was the best description. I got the same problem. Thanks bro
Damn. I thought those pesky squirrels installed a supercharger in my Accord. Turns out it was the alternator like you explained
So what did you do? DID the customer want the battery and alternator replaced? IF you're gonna do one might as well do both because 1 will still have the issue regardless afterwards if they only do one thing. Why do cars have to be so simple but yet so complicated these days....
Dale N The only thing I did was replace the alternator because the customer was complaining of the noise.

But is this open-diode sound(electrical) is also the same sound as a defective alternator bearing? As when the alternator's plug is disconnected, either of the 2 sounds above will stop.
No they bearing would still make noise
I have the same sound coming from my Honda. The problem is I went to check my alternator and the man said it works perfectly. Charging voltage is right, and the battery in top notch state. Could it be I have shorted diods producing this sound without any other electrical problems whatsoever?
Yes. Did they try disconnecting the plug at the alternator?
@@HomieHektor I just tried that and the moment I step on the gas I still hear that high pitch whining. I would like to hear how that car sounds (from your video) after you replaced the alternator.
