Omg you saved me a heart attack! I thought it was coming from the transmission! That's the exact noise my 07 TSX is making and I noticed the reservoir was empty. I added some fluid and it went away. I will be replacing the O-ring this weekend ! Thank you Jim !

I'm here in 2023 with the same noise ... 2005 4cyl accord power steering pump is $180 at advanced auto parts ... the Honda PS fluid is $10 per quart ... twin cities area, Minnesota
how is it where you are?

Hi Jim, I am a poor student from Austin, Texas, having a 2004 Honda Accord. I followed your steps and finally solved the issue that the power steer was hard to turn during the cold days when the vehicle was just started, and once the temperature increased to the normal level, it was easy to turn. Less than 3 bucks to purchase the o-ring and a screwdriver to get the job done in 20 minutes.
This problem has been there for more 4 years since I owned the vehicle. The former owner told me to pull in some antifreeze. One dealer told me to change the power steering pump, which costs about $500. Another dealer told me to flush the power steering fluid as well as repair the power steering pump for the low pressure, which costs about $400. I understand people want to make money for their work, but I don't think it is the way.
I appreciate your time and efforts to knowledge guys like me, who is without any experience of vehicle repair and maintenance. Also, I decide to do the regular maintenance and repair work by myself first rather than asking for help from the greedy dealers.
    Wish you a Merry Christmas.

Great work! Saved my bacon! I immediately thought the P.S. pump was going out. In searching RUclips I found your video. Worked like a dream! Had it repaired in 20 minutes. BUT,...your holding up the part # saved me...because the guy at Honda parts desk had NO IDEA what I needed...however, I had him turn the computer screen towards me and examine the P.S. parts legend and BOOM!..found it!
Anyways....just to say THANK YOU! Cost of O-ring: $4.00 ...
You saved me several 100's of $$.
    Peace and blessings to you!

Hey Jim, I have a 2007 Honda Element with 247K miles...great car for sure. I had the exact buzzing noise from my power steering pump and the reservoir had a lot of foam. Mechanic said the power steering pump needed replacement...well, I watched your video and replaced that o-ring ($3 from Honda). Wow!! Solved the problem in less than 5 minutes, no more buzzing and the Element drives perfect. You saved me a LOT of money! Oh, if anyone is getting a P2646 code with the VSA, !, and check engine lights with the rpm not able to go over 2,800 rpm, it's probably the VTEC solenoid needs replacement. Warning!! Do NOT buy an aftermarket solenoid, buy a new OEM Honda solenoid ($162) from the dealership. I tried to save money and bought a Dorman solenoid ($100) from Auto Zone and another off brand from Amazon ($45)...both worked for about 20 miles before the failed. The OEM part solved the problem!! Thank again Jim for your professional videos!! U Da Man!!!

Thanks Jimthecarguy.....after watching your how to do it video my power steering is now fixed.......BUT as i looked at the video and you in your NAPA hat i only assumed that you were a NAPA mechanic soooooooooo i went to NAPA for the "O" ring.......(NOT smart) it was $11.47......so I'm thinking it is a special part and would cost a little more ,well i go to install it on the pump...i dropped it down somewhere around the motor and couldn't find it soooooooo now I'm thinking I'll have to put out another $11.47 for another one.soooooo i went to Honda for the "O" ring i work not too far from there and surprise surprise, surprise, 😲 .........OK this will hurt a LOT, the "O" ring price 0.97cent............all was my fault I did not LOOK before I Leaped...let the buyer be were. IN all it was worth it, my power steering is back to new.so THANKS JIM

Thanks so much! This fixed it exactly. Bought a $10 o-ring kit from the local parts store and had it fixed in minutes. It did take a little bit of driving to purge the air and get the noise to go away. Two days later after only a few miles of local driving, the noise is completely gone. I had this noise for a while, and even then, it apparently didn't damage the pump thankfully. If I do have to replace the pump down the road, the kit came with two o-rings - the 2nd one I'll be able to use the high pressure side.

Thanks! I did this repair on an 07 odyssey and it took care of the noise. The dealership parts guy called the o ring, RDA. I only replaced the suction side o ring, the orange one. I didn't expect the old o ring to be black, and it appeared slightly thinner in the thickness of the ring. There was more fluid leaked than I expected would be! I had a bunch of paper towels underneath it, so caught most of it. That bolt was really difficult to get at. I had just done a reservoir replacement and this might have been easier to do along with that. If only i had known it was needing to be done too.

That was a simple job, and I have had that problem on one of my current vehicles and had it checked out. I know there are many others who had the same problem also since I hear the noise from other vehicles when we meet, and know they have to get that checked out. Thanks for showing us how to take care of that with just the O-ring replacement.

I know I've said this before but these videos are going to help lots of people. If you ever get a judge that says you have to do community service for a crime you can just tell him to go to your channel and tell him "I already did my community service"!

I also had this problem not just with the O ring but also air was getting past the clips on hose.
A bit of gasket sealer spread on the 2 unions where tube joins the reservoir and the pump completely fixed this!!

Just changed both o rings on my v6 yesterday. WOW. What a difference! No more loud whining noise on cold mornings. It purrs like a kitten now. Make sure you change the top and bottom one, and bleed the system with the cap off and move the wheel back and forth lock to lock.

Just did this on my 2010. I ordered the orings and pump, did the rings first and it worked. Some say the 8th Gen doesn't have this issue but mine did and had the old black oring.

I did this on my 09 Honda Accord during the winter months. I thought I needed a new drive belt or pump. Got the O ring from the dealership. It worked perfectly. I think the airing is orange so they know the change was complete.
