Porsche 911 Resurrected - The Epic Conclusion of Project 996

- This has been a 2 year long, labor of love, with high-highs and the lowest of lows.
In 2020, my friends Patrick, Steve and I decided to find a Porsche 911 that had seen better days and restore it, with a vision that was uniquely ours. With a broken transmission, creaking brakes, aging paint, hale damage, a cracked windscreen and a host of other issues... we spent the best part of 9 months bringing this first of the water-cooled 911s back to its former glory. Unfortunately after a load of word and a paint job, the replacement transmission blew up again but this time damaged the engine.
Now, 18 months later, with its third transmission and a new engine as well as a lot of TLC, this 996 is back on the road.... join me for this epic conclusion to PROJECT 996!
As ever, thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting my channel. Keep the comments and chat coming! More videos coming soon. Cheers!

Congratulations James. That Nick Murray was a doubter but you have shown him!! The rear wiper also makes this car.
Cheers Nick! You’re right, the rear wiper is the sexiest part about the car.
@@AutoAmateur Looking and sounding great, James! Just the rear wiper to delete.
Fabulous 👌 and got to love that rear wiper duck tail combination.
So glad to see it back on the road James! Love the ducktail. Just like mine! LOL!
Congrats! It must be an epic relief to have this complete and back on the road. Looking forward to see what’s next for you and the channel. Keep it going!
Looking good! Can't wait to see the next videos!
Hi James , here Torsten from Germany.
I saw a vid from That Car before i think .
And now this came out so nice 😍
Its a Rolling Diamont id say !
Well done and deserved !
Makes me feel so humble to see People like you , enjoying 996es . They are so Sweet, you could Never stop looking at them 😆
I wish I could come out with you guys on that tour .
But im little too far away 🤣
Until 1999 i used to live in Pittsburgh, lets turn back time 😇👆🏾👌🏽
Stripes will look great. I added them to my 997 with a duck. If you want to be authentic with the stripe here are the measurements. Each stripe is 17.5cm wide with a 3cm gap in between each stripe. Total width 38cm. I got the measurements from a Porsche Dealer in the United Kingdom that had a used 997 Sport Classic for sale. I was surprised they responded to my email asking about the dimensions of the stripes.
Amazing!!! I highly recommend the Numeric Racing short throw shifter, finished with a 997 wooden shift knob.
Outstanding work, James! The color on that car is epic and I love how you stuck with it to see this project to the end (almost there!).
Absolutely gorgeous! The color looks great and of course love the ducktail. Can't wait to see the stripes. Very well done!
James, the quality of production on this video is a HUGE step up in your game!! The drone b-rolls are amazing! Great job, man!! And the 996 looks and sounds great!, wish I were closer, that Rocky Mountain trip sounds awesome! Looking forward to future content! All the best!
One of the best looking 996’s!
Wow! I have a triple dark, navy blues 987.1 Boxster. Love it but I think your blue really pops. And I just powder coated the rims to match the paint w/gold calipers. I think I’ll keep mine forever. Love it that much! Thanks for the video!
Wow, what a transformation of my ol 996 since you got it from me in mid 2020. Its come a long way James. And yes, I figured it was the guy I had do the IMS conversion was the one that didnt do something right. That was when all the issues with the car for me begun. I truely do miss this car but am glad it went to go home and to someone that could fix it up properly. I want to get another 996. Maybe a Turbo 996 this time around. 🤔
On a side note I just got my 2020 Charger 392 out the shop (that I bought new in 2020 off showroom) due to bottom end going out at only 37,8xx miles. Have had it back 4 days now and its already has to go back to dealership because of clanking from under the car and a weird sound coming from reverse.
Damn happy to see you back on RUclips! Missed you James, and again Congratulations with this temperamental 996 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic! Well done. 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Less music, more engine noise! Great looking car but I was dying to hear more of that exhaust
Just well done mate!! What a journey, many thanks for taking us along.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate all the support.
Looks and sounds great James! Can't wait to see the finalized version...
Regards,
ALinCAL
What a beautiful 911. That blue color is stunning. Cheers
Congratulations, James! Can't wait to see this in person soon! Looks absolutely amazing! 👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks Nick! Cheers
Im so pleased you got it back, & enjoying it
Outstanding video! Love the cinematography! For a breath second I saw the nose of my car. 🧐
Ha! That’s right!
Wow! Tons of dedication to this 996 project, well worth it! I was thinking on picking up a 997 as a second 911, but now I want a 996, dam you! Hehehe love what you've done so far
First things first: the music is next level, James. Holy cow. Second: it has to be all kinds of relief to have fully identified what cracked the trans and engine. Third: I still think the stripes need to be a lighter shade of blue. Last: let’s swap keys for at least one mountain pass in Colorado NEXT MONTH!!!
Thank you kind sir! And absolutely, let’s trade keys while we’re on the road in Colorado.
Looks great and sounds amazing!
AWESOME save! I remember you considering selling or parting it out. Looks great! Looking forward to see its progression. Cheers 🍻
Jay, thank you so much for sticking with the car! It sounds like misalignment when the trans and engine mated up, then as bolts were tightened it multiplied the problem. Could also have been the wrong flywheel, and once the trans and engine were tightened the input shaft split the housing and engine castings. Just a theory. I guess Porsche didn’t like the way it was going together and advised new clutch components and flywheel?
Wow just wow👍 congratulations James you have done it proud sounds & looks amazing sir!
Thank you kindly!
Beautiful car! Hello from Alexandria, Mn, western Minnesota. Not many Porsche’s here.
It’s beautiful up there! My wife’s aunt lives there. Greetings!
Great job james thats one of the nicest 996s ive seen! I knew something wasnt lined up at least the garage found it! It must have been driving you mad! Ps love the mood lighting in the garage😎😉
Happy for you.
Happy for you.
How awesome. Congrats getting her back on the road!
Thanks so much! Appreciate it.
Job Well Done !! Season have finally started here as well, KW suspension and powerflex bushing upgrade starting soon 😀😀😀
Nice video and pretty car. Your editing has come a long way from your early videos. They're looking great! The music and action shots on the outro are so good. 👍
I definitely like the sport classic stripe idea for that car -- that will be killer! Also, good to know that you and your diy crew weren't the cause of the bellhousing failure. Wish I could see the car in person. Maybe in Indianapolis at Porsche Sports Cars Together Fest?
I’ll be there!! Cheers!
One of the best videos you’ve done. If I could press like more than once I would
That’s very kind! Thank you!
Gorgeous 💙
Ooooohhhh my duck tail is at the paint shop right now. This makes me even more excited! Congrats on the rebuild!
Thank you!! Hope you enjoy it!
Best news I’ve heard all day.
Bring it to Porsche Parade 2022 in Pennsy 👍🏾. Would love to see you and Jay.
Sounds great.
Nice work Boyz and Girls..996 Saved.
Well doneJames! Finaliy!
Well done, James! Can't tell you how happy I am that you repaired this car. Maybe a Porsche restoration business is in your future???
Ha! That sounds like an absolute dream, but I’m not sure I could make any money from it! Thanks for all the support.
Gorgeous 👌🏾
Thank you!!
Yes love the 996 content I'm back watching 🤣
Last Summer I bought a 2002 996 Cabriolet with just 47,000 km (about 30,000 miles). While I was having the clutch replaced, I also had a new IMS installed. Plus I had a PCCM+ put in place of the OEM stereo. I prefer driving this car to my previous 997 and 991 as it is much more engaging.
great video as always. if you exchange the control arms strongly recommend to replace the rubber bushings with shore 85 type bushings. similar to GT3 spec.. once installed you may never have the opportunity to do so again. it costs around 100usd to have them replaced. 2 bushings per control arm, inner & middle. helps to stabilize wheel geometry.
Thank you!!
i'm soo ready to get a duck tail its just looks "smexy" Dove vid as always bless up!
Cheers, James! -Mike
Glad you found the root cause of the problem and got it fixed correctly. Enjoy it!
thats a beautiful garage m8
Congrats! I must say though - make those calipers the same blue as the car. that would look sweet!
So, what's your favorite generation so far? I love the work you did on the car!
Nice looking car. The front suspension, sway bar or as we call them in the UK anti roll bar links, are easy enough, the front control arms, aka Coffin arms can be a pain. UK and East coast cars the bolts seize up and often need cutting off.( It depends how much salt you get on your roads) you may also need the fork control arms, worth changing whilst you are in there and top strut mounts, then its all done.
Epic
Doesn't it now need the Nick Murray copy roof delete?
That 996 sounds swell, good to see it on the road.
Lower control arm removal can be an absolute nightmare if the bolts are rusted into the bushings, which they often are. You need to cut through the bolts (without damaging the delicate subframe mounts!) to get the arms out. Be warned!
You’ve created a gorgeous looking car James. I wonder if you have considered painting the inside of the headlights black to help hide the shape of these lights. I know most purists will disagree with me. Love your work.
Thanks Werner!! I've considered a few different options for the headlights but I think factory is fab in this case. :)
Looks great James! I installed new suspension bits on my 996 about 2 years ago, very easy to do. I am 20 minutes from you if you ever need a hand on it. Also, what became of the core engine?
Congratulations. I really like your car. We have very similar tastes. I want to install duck-tail and front bumper like your car.
Holy shit I forgot about this bad boy 996
Great video on a great auto. I do have a question about your upcoming front end work. How did you know it needed new bushings and lower control arms? I'm asking because my '03 996 seems to wander at highway speeds even after I've replaced springs, shocks and 4-wheel alignment. Am wondering what you've experienced. In advance, thanks much.
I was getting a lot of sideways movement at speed when traveling in a straight line which was freaking me out. I took it to Porsche and they diagnosed it to be that problem. I had horrid vibrations above 60 mph but that was because my front struts were shot.
Very cool video. The car looks great! How abou the new seats and steering wheel?
Thank you my friend! I have a video about the seats coming soon…
Looks and sounds incredible. I would copy the 996 sc recreation as that one is a museum piece. Navy blue stripes with a grey pinstripe would reverse the colour specs of the Porsche version
I think you have it backwards, not that it matters much.
I think the engine block was cracked, and vibration from the cracked engine caused the crack in the bell housing.
There's no pressure between the transmission and the engine when the clutch is released. The power is delivered from the clutch to the transmission through a splined shaft. There's no axial load.
It's possible the clutch was somehow out of balance and perhaps that caused vibration which cracked the engine block.
hi James, Great build. What did you do to the engine before reinstall aside from the rubber hoses? Was the timing belt/water pump/thermometer done since the engine was out?
The belts were replaced as were the spark plugs and tubes, but the water pump looked fine. They took the opportunity to give the car a complete inspection top to toe.
Oh man! I know what you mean about feeling copycat! I did the exact same homage to the 997 Sport Classic. I went for the ducktail and similarly painted 2-tone lobster fork wheels. I’m about to add stripes, but I think I’ll be “different” and go with a wide center stripe instead of double stripes.
That blue demon is looking great and sounds even better! What’s up with the exhaust?
Very interesting re the root cause of the cracked engine and trans. When you did the initial transmission swap, did you leave the clutch and flywheel on the engine? Or remove and inspect?
I hit the like button before I watched it because there’s no way I don’t love this! I will report further momentarily. Stay tuned… 😬
😂😂😂
Hey James, just going through all these, love the 996 project! Hopefully going to embark on my own one soon. I can't find anything about your ducktail in your videos. I'm sure I'm just missing it, can you give me a link or info? Thank you! Tom
I didn’t do the installation myself. The body shop did it when they painted the car blue. I got the piece from eBay. I’ll add a link.
Here it is: www.ebay.com/itm/325795201446?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=uRUvRgHgSRO&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=5tJZPVAnSg6&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
@AutoAmateur so kind thanks. It looks really good. They did a great job.
Lovely car James, I have a 964 same colour ,you should of done a Rear Wiper delete on your 996 tidy up the rear of the car 👌
Very good suggestion. It was (is) on the list but didn't make the rebuild
budget unfortunately.
What exhaust are you running? Sounds great!
Thanks! Stock headers, Soul Performance sport / high flow cats and Fister (FD Motorsports) mufflers. It's absolutely epic in person!!!
Did you buy it out from your other two friends?
where is Part two for the upholstery ?????
What happened with the seat restoration 3 months ago? Did you do the blue stitching?
Great question! I’m gonna be doing a video about the interior updates that I’ve done recently, in the next week or two. Stay tuned!
@@AutoAmateur cool!
We don't see many videos on 996 interior improvement, though interior is often one reason the 996 is so disliked (i.e. sticky scratched soft touch)
Did I miss the grand $$ total on the resurrection?
Which duck tail Spoiler?👍🏻
Admittedly, just a random replica from China from eBay for around $400. It looks absolutely mint though!
@@AutoAmateur thank you
Is it really concluded if you still add little things to it?
I dare you to leave it alone 😂
Oh no screw that… Current 996 job list….
- Front & rear brakes
- Momo steering wheel swap
- Front control arms
- Sway bar bushings
- CarPlay head unit retrofit
- Replace wheel well liners.
@@AutoAmateur 😂
Car is nice, but please, readjust doors, 3:24 - moment
Stop saying BELL HOUSING and BUSH! Rude.
Didn’t do the Tiptronic switchover when you were in there, no? I think most people would say it would have finished it off perfectly. Shame.
Otherwise, it looks alright, I suppose.
;-)
Jay, maybe you could have donated the Tip from your "donor car"? 😆😆😆 Have you decided what to drive to Colorado yet???
Tiptronic typically lowers the value
@@erolfox Pretty sure Jay is being a tad sarcastic. In fact, he has a Tip for sale if you're interested!
Oh Jay, there is only one giant bell, and I’m pretty sure he’s a ginger who lives in Connecticut.
@@AutoAmateur oof! 😂😂😂
Not going to lie I was thinking about adding those stripes to the 996 the first time I saw blue and black on it
