Nice collection but there is one key model missing, and that’s an early pre facelift C2 manual coupe. Nice simple recipe, lightweight and beautiful to drive, 300bhp and a quarter of the price of the GT3.

Old guys like me want to own the cars they dreamed of when they were younger. It's not about speed and being the best, It's about the experience. I giggle like a schoolgirl every time I drive my 996 GT3. Every GT3 generation has the special sauce but the 996 gt3 series are as close to a cup car as you can get for the street. Very raw machines that love to be driven hard. I used to own a 996 c2 which was also a great car but very different. I also own a GT4 but honestly much prefer the 6-gt3 because it's just more fun.
As an owner of a 996.2 GT3 Clubsport I am a bit in it. So what you have here is the 996,1 GT3 withe 360 PS. The next gen had 381 PS. Although like Andreas Preuninger says, the 1. gen often were a bit shy of 360 where the later gen was very much between 395 and 410. It was just politics to be lower then the turbo. So they say the 996.2 was quicker not only a margin. Anyway that car is such a joy to drive, everything is so crisp raw and you can rev it to 8200 - which makes a phantastic sound. Only thing is, that the front is sneaking very close to the ground.
I have a 1997 996.1 plain Carrera 2 with a 2018 factory new engine (M96/01AT) and a new 6 speed manual gearbox G96X.. practically new car with all the improvements on the engine and box for less than 30k. If money was no option I off course would have a GT1.2 Strassenversion .. the one with the eggs✌
One missing from the mix. 996 40Jahre. 2 wheel drive, manual (of course) x51 engine pack (makes a colossal difference) M030 suspension (ditto) and turbo front spoiler. Effectively the ‘GTS’. Amazing on the road.
I had a mildly modded Gen 1 996 GT3 and was by far the best car I've owned. Had the Manthey K400 upgrade so putting out close to 400bhp (360 stock) and was setup for track work. Miss that car very much.
8 years ago I did a crazy thing, I bought a 996 Carrera 4 without knowing anything about 911's. I overpaid, had to replace the clutch, IMS, exhaust , all 4 rads, and much more since. Every winter my brain goes crazy thinking of what better, newer, more powerful 911 to replace it with, every spring I get in the car and drive the thing and realise how brilliant it is. Its a keeper ( at least for now...)
My choice would be GT3, I own (and love) a 996 C4S. Very different cars though. I need another garage space first as I would want to keep the C4S. It's such a great alrounder!

996’s are great cars. I’ve had a 3.4, 3.6 4s and now a turbo. The 4s was slightly underwhelming but incredibly pretty. The 3.4 was perfection to drive but not look at. I’ve had the turbo for years and it has been superb and completely reliable.
I have a 3.4 and a 3.6 and couldn't agree more that the 3.4 996.1 C2 is perfection to drive. It's a daily driver with the most smiles per gallon. And personally, I LOVE the looks. Mine is an early build (3/98) with amber lenses. 24 years later the look is pure modern classic in my eyes. Plus the early built 996s were hand assembled along with the outgoing 993 gen on the same line so they are tanks. No squeaks or rattles. And mine still smells like the beautiful Connolly leather that was still used at that time. Get a well-sorted early build 996 C2 with a cable throttle and you'll never regret it.
@@pshame4466 yes I agree. Build quality is better. I didn’t like the looks at the time (over 15 years ago) but it’s aged well so I swapped for a 4s which was a mistake. Heavy and slow. But I do love my turbo.
I love the analogue nature of the 993 gt3 with less electronic nannies to dilute the purity of driving experience, all these are captured in that mechanical engine sound coming into the cabin. This car is a time capsule in terms of its vintage status and the focus is on the drive, if one can overlook the somewhat unique look of the headlights then you got a gem. I concur that 996 is a miss for me, I will take the 964, 963 and the sweet spot 997 generation. When Compared to with its siblings 996 is not ageing as well as other classic Porsche due to its unique headlights imo. Thanks Pete!
Brilliant video, really enjoyed that. Great cars all but the sweet spot for me is the 996 Turbo. Going to have to have a serious chat with my bank manager on Monday but don't tell the wife...
Love and appreciate all of these great cars. I’m fortunate enough to have owned a 2004 C4S with the X51 package which gives a near GT3-like performance at a much lower price. This is my choice. These are little-known gems that provide 345 BHP and are great fun to own and drive. Excellent power, suspension and sound. It’s a Porsche.
Came v close to buying a silver 4S from my OPC about 15 years ago. It was about £35k then but I chose an M3 instead. Missed opportunity so I’d jump on it now!
I've got a Black 996 C4S Manual Coupe and also a Speed Yellow 996 Turbo X50 Manual Coupe which is essentially a Turbo S as its got the bigger GT2 turbo's and intercoolers etc. My favourite though is still the C4S. Although the Turbo is much quicker I prefer the NA drive the C4S engine offers.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I love the analogue nature of these cars. We lose sight of how far things have come in the last few years in terms of BHP!
I would have loved to see you drive the 996 C4S to see whether twice the price is twice the car compared to the GT3, i;d bet you'd get at least 80 percent of the experience from the C4S, Go back please, great video thankyou.
Hi Ped What a unique collection.🥰🥰 My choice (difficult) but I think GT3. I was only thinking yesterday it would be great to get back to an analogue drivers car, without all the “chips” which we managed well without a few years back. Now the brand has got under your skin, this collection represents a superb selection depending on your current financial situation. Great, but I hoped you would taken the C 4S for spinn. GT2/3 996 have been reviewed a lot on the youtube. And the Turbos. Looking forward you do a review with C4S. ☺️
Lovely video, a 911 suits you. Although I'd miss out on having a Mezger engine I'd probably choose the C4S, Ive had both turbo and NA 911s (997) and the character of the NA is lovely, the turbo is a bit bland. GT2 and 3 too hardcore for me every day but if you were just buying as a Sunday blaster they would be ok. All IMO but that's what you asked for 😀
I very much enjoyed my 996 it had the factory fitted gt3 body kit .i believe at the time the rear spoiler was £2500 alone !!! Great Cars ..you really must scratch that 911 Itch .
Hello Peter….from that collection it might well be the GT3 but I get a bit worried about older cars at that value…I have wandered many an auction with a few very worrying old Porsche being persuaded from one sale to the next…the owner hoping the rust bubbles would not break out again. A friend paid £10,000 for a 1981 Targa in c.2000 and I remember most the aroma of dying clutch, damp floors and new respray…but he sold it for £12000 after six months….and I see it is still around, taxed, MOT and with the current owner since 2012. So I’m not sure..BUT if I could get a new one…torn…GT3 RS Weissach or MR…but guess the best real world drive…a 992 Turbo S …they would do very nicely thank you!! A neighbour bought a brand new 911 in 1980…he truly drove it as a daily car because it was his only car. In 2002 he changed to a new 996 C2…he still has it, is still his only car….and doubtless has made a profit…two cars in 40 years still worth what he paid! Good luck with the thoughts on buying….is it a Morgan or one of those on sale???😃😎😎😎😎Richard.
I never get in the top 7, i aimed for it this week , but kids dinner etc life got in the way! Still you are always good at replying ! What a wow barn of 911 s fabulous ! My father had a few 911s over the years and he was a rally driver for decades , he always said buying these cars is the easy part but long term - the costs are crazy = his Aston 1973 volante vantage , was a proper classic , but it cost more than my house ! to fix up over 30 odd years ! Which one to choose - Well for me like dad rear wheel drive more power captain! had many laps at brands hatch , not me driving , but my dad and his rally mates - proper tail out -nuts driving , but they had all just come back from the safari rally ! continues.................
I’m in the process of looking to buy a 911 and have settled on a 996. Whilst I like the lights on the 997 my observation is that the interior, more specifically the buttons don’t wear as well as the ones in the 9o6 range, esp in my price range. I think you chose the right car to drive but any of them would have been amazing. Great content.
Ah that's just such a lovely sound. I've always wished I could go back in time and do a rally like the 2004 or 2005 Gumball 3000 and do it in a high-spec 996 911.
Great video and collection of 996's. I personally would go for the C4S NA car. I agree with others on this thread that I'd look more at the 997.2 C4S in that era of cars. Otherwise a newer C4S if money was not a factor. They're all great driver's cars. I have a Cayenne S (more practical overall) and a 718 Cayman S (not as practical, amazing handling, but does have a good amount of cargo space, just not as much in the cabin as a 911).
I can't say I have ever seen the attraction of Porsche until my brother in law turned up in his new Cayenne and showed me what it can do performance wise. Sold instantly but price constraints kicked in. It's crazy thinking of the bhp in todays cars compared to the classics of yesteryear.
Amazing collection Ped! From that selection I’d take the Turbo. Great value and who doesnt want a connection to a rally legend in their life? If I had a free choice it wouldn’t technically be a Porsche 911. I’d take a heritage based Singer. Unlike us it’s something that started life in the 70’s that hasn’t got bits dropping off…😂
A lovely car, but to be honest, for that money you might as well have a brand new Boxter/Cayman GTS with a manual box and non turbo engine... that'd be my choice 👍
Evening all! Hope everyone has a good weekend. My dad use to own a Manual 996 Turbo X Pack (essentially a Turbo S before that was a thing.) So I would have that.
Awesome video Peter. I was lucky enough to drive the C4S back when they were new. Love the looks but a bit slow and underpowered in my opinion (I drove the tiptronic so the manual may be 10-20% better). . I also drove a 996 Turbo manual. Love the looks but not the nicest gear change. For me the pick of the bunch on mechanical purity and price would be the GT3. I hope that a 911 will make its way into Ped ownership someday soon.
Hi Pete, Mmmmm now you’ve got me thinking , think this Porsche would go in my ultimate all you really need garage. 1/ Ford transit lifestyle crew cab (put the bikes in) 2/ LandRover defender 110 latest variant for bad weather driving 3/ Porsche 911 carrera 4S just for fun Sundays. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 What more could you need.
Great video! Thanks for sharing... I love the 997.2 GT3. I think these will rocket in value in the coming years. The gen II is the sweet spot for modern looks, but maintain the analogue feel, before the electric steering came in on the 991. The last of the raw breed IMO. Also, super reliable!!!
I just acquired a 996.2 6-speed Coupe. While I would love to have a GT3 I'm so in love with this car. It's way more than I thought it would be and the headlights don't bother me nor does the interior. I do want to get the taco wing on it. For some reason when the cars have big spoilers The Lights seem to fit better.
Great collection. I enjoyed that video more than the 992 one last week. I too am pining after a 911 and also really like the 997 as it’s aged a bit better in my humble opinion. Of the 996 range on show today I’d probably go for the Turbo. If you like 996 / 997 Porsches I can thoroughly recommend the Friends Green Porsche You Tube channel.
Wow..... what a day out ! I'd probably be looking at the turbo Ped.... spending any more & i'd be wanting a 997 of some sort. Of the current range a Carrera 4S Targa would be a nice usable daily if I had the money. Hope they do stay together, what a collection
There all very pretty cars. I agree the headlights shape is a bit off putting but could be looked past. The gt3 wheels I don’t like. The wheels on the rest are the designs I’d rather have lol. Great review and so cool to be able to do a whole generationally video of these cars! Not that I could afford it but I’d want the turbo s
1973 911 RS always my fave.Light, underpowered by modern standards but small and quick enough.Need your wits about you though. As a daily that 996 4S would be good. More track focused the 997 GT3,road liveable. The GT2 's have a well earned reputation.
Always had a problem with the headlights but you don't see them when you're having all the fun behind the wheel no? Would go for the 4S as a daily. Cheers
Would take 996 gt3 or 997 gt3 all day. 996/997 perfect platform for me. Aircooled ones have nice sound but overall did not enjoy them plus the prices... 991 onwards too bulky for my liking. But they are all great cars.
Ditto. I could have gone for 996 or 997, but a 40 Jahre 996 in exceptional condition came up & it chose itself! GT silver, extended leather, alcantara headlining, full electric seats, X51 (345bhp?), LSD, MO30 suspension, shot blasted chrome-look wheels (I think they’re a tight cast aluminium and polished, not coated), updated PCCM+, contemplating PSE, too. It’s got such a low mileage that I can’t justify replacing the stock shifter with the 997 GT3 all metal short shift. Even three up (my wife in the back) on the test drive, it’s quick enough. Looks, drives & even smells like a new car. Lucky to find it at the perfect moment in time. Not too powerful but enough to give me a grin each drive. I had been considering RS3, but I’ve had two S3s and couldn’t get excited about an RS3 any more. It’s also “too good”. Everything is electronic, and the newer ones have that ghastly black shiny stuff everywhere and an empty space filled only by software when you turn it on. I got a flash of insight that I’d be renting the virtual cockpit. I am never going to have such a car. I’ll be driving modern classics only from here on in (I’m 64, so quite doable). The final option was a A45S AMG but they are so rare that finding one was difficult. And do I need that much power? Not really. The only pang was seeing 997s because I do concede they’re more beautiful than the 996, only just! I didn’t find one in the condition & spec that I wanted. Had there been a Speed Yellow 997, low mileage, well maintained, fully loaded, I’d have bitten a hand off for it. But my GT silver 996 is special to look at and to drive, almost completely analogue. Just ABS & a basic TC. New cars are to me distressingly digital and I’ve particular reasons to be wary of an over digitalised life.
I e no idea why people get so hung up on the headlights , I think they look fine . When your driving you can’t see them anyway , youlll be to busy enjoying the sound of the flat 6 to care! 😎
In the early 1990s when I lived in a Highland glen, my immediate neighbour had a Porsche 911 turbo which he raced against his brother-in-law's Sierra Cosworth. Hard to believe that both of these could now be beaten by many of today's hot hatches
Would be nice to get a comparison with the C4S. It looks like a bargain compared with the other four cars, but is it really much less enjoyable? Wouldn’t it be a good daily?
I have a 996 4S that's a great car. It truly is that good middle ground. It has the wide body, all-wheel drive (to save me from wrapping myself around a tree lol) decent level of comfort (it doesn't beat you up too much) and enough speed to "feel modern". Personally I would wait for prices to drop. The prices for 996s/Caymans are absolutely absurd, these days even the high mileage examples.
… It is a great daily, specially with the tip box, even if I don’t daily drive mine, as I use to drive an A8 company car. And don’t be afraid about all that tiptronic internet bashing, since with its less than 5kg/bhp ratio, you’ll still be playing in the "Super Car Champions League"!… 👍👌
The 996 will always be my favorite 911 generation.
Nice collection but there is one key model missing, and that’s an early pre facelift C2 manual coupe. Nice simple recipe, lightweight and beautiful to drive, 300bhp and a quarter of the price of the GT3.

996 GT3's will keep going up to £100k + for sure. The Turbo is insanely fast and not such a harsh ride but the whole 996 range is brilliant.

Stunning collection, would be great if they were kept together 👍🏻
good review, but there is no carrera s in the 996 range..😄
Thats a great road from bury hill roundabout down towards Amberly great review Petrol Ped
The turbo!! 😍😍😍😍
Wow, that's no bargain!! He seen you coming
They are so analog that is what is great about them
You lucky so and so Ped!!!!! 🤣
Unlike us it’s something that started life in the 70’s that hasn’t got bits dropping off…😂
I enjoyed watching the Video. A very good Porsche Coupe
996 turbo would mine my choice
A lovely car, but to be honest, for that money you might as well have a brand new Boxter/Cayman GTS with a manual box and non turbo engine... that'd be my choice 👍
Evening all! Hope everyone has a good weekend. My dad use to own a Manual 996 Turbo X Pack (essentially a Turbo S before that was a thing.) So I would have that.
Beautiful
I’ll take the silver one! 😍
1/ Ford transit lifestyle crew cab (put the bikes in)
2/ LandRover defender 110 latest variant for bad weather driving
3/ Porsche 911 carrera 4S just for fun Sundays.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What more could you need.
yes enter the worm hole
ive had my 996 one year now and i l;Ive it
Great video! Thanks for sharing... I love the 997.2 GT3. I think these will rocket in value in the coming years. The gen II is the sweet spot for modern looks, but maintain the analogue feel, before the electric steering came in on the 991. The last of the raw breed IMO. Also, super reliable!!!
It's a hard life Pete, don't know how you cope to be able to see a great collection and get to drive one.
I would go for the Turbo s or GT2.
Nice 👌
GT3 is the one to have to use and enjoy. Whole range choice would be a 964 RS.
FGP have some lovely 996/997 models in stock!
Great collection of cars Peter
I would’ve picked the GT2🙂 Sounds like the one you’re going to drive, later is modded. Will be interesting!
Wow..... what a day out !
I'd probably be looking at the turbo Ped.... spending any more & i'd be wanting a 997 of some sort.
Of the current range a Carrera 4S Targa would be a nice usable daily if I had the money.
Hope they do stay together, what a collection
Just go for a boggo 996 c2 coupe. Pure and simple and such great value.
Metzger engine with a Tubi exhaust. Heaven!
Hello sir, wow, that’s some collection being sold.
Gt3.1 the first of the type… in 20 years time it’s gonna be worth a fortune if history is anything to go by
What a collection! I'd pick the GT3 if I could afford it!
Great video, I'd have to go with Richard Burns car.
Imho the best deal is the ex Burns Turbo.
The Turbo S, cause oh the 4WD!
I e no idea why people get so hung up on the headlights , I think they look fine .
When your driving you can’t see them anyway , youlll be to busy enjoying the sound of the flat 6 to care! 😎
True. I own one and all what counts is the sound when revving to 8200 👌
So much in common with my own car it's uncanny.....silver,German,no buttons on steering wheel,no sat nav.......the list goes on 😅
In the early 1990s when I lived in a Highland glen, my immediate neighbour had a Porsche 911 turbo which he raced against his brother-in-law's Sierra Cosworth. Hard to believe that both of these could now be beaten by many of today's hot hatches
I thought the video was in black and white with all those grey cars ha! nice collection tho.
😂😂😂
Pete that was top trumps on steroids , lovely collection would be a shame to break up that line up 👍
The turbo, having owned a 996 Carrera 4 they do get under your skin but the nagging IMS rear seal issues are alway present.
Thankfully neither of those issues apply to the Turbo and GT3 variants.
I would be driving that gt3 home 😃
😂😂😂
The market is absolutely nuts, fair to say these are 10-15K more than 2y ago?
just right for the end of a heavy week...
I liked the Turbo and TurboS - that GT3 looked overly lowered at the front.....?
Lost you when I saw the Yamaha Vmax behind whatever you were talking about!
That turbo was at a horsham dealers before...wonder why its being sold so quick again
