My dad had an 87 on an e plate carrera - he’d looked at the turbo but he said it was too much poke and performance for the road, even back in the 90s and was definitely not up for tacking it. We did follow an 88turbo down A3 from where the hogs back crosses over to Milford. My dad was chuffed to keep up as we joined a3 from Farnham road - then the turbo came on and it pulled a few car lengths! It was like dropping a gear in carrera then some. He kept his for 25 years and loved it - especially as you had to drive it!
The only way to win Top Trumps ..we just called it the Porsche Turbo Bear in mind most family cars in the early 80's were around 80hp ..this was 300! Today though on a more frugal budget a 996 Turbo would be a good choice for reliability , comfort and power , with some old school feel still there.
It’s an absolute thing of beauty and is the reason why I also have a life long love of Porsche (especially the 911). I’m 50 and I would say that the 930 Turbo (I remember it’s variants, more the 935 I think being in the film Condorman) is responsible for many people of my age falling in love with the 911. Can you imagine having that in the garage to take out on a lovely day.
Acquired an ‘86 930 a few months ago. It is such fun to drive and every time I have it out, it brings thumbs ups, positive comments, and smiles. Get one if you can.
The impact these made on the road was incredible. My dad would be driving us along a dual carriageway and see a 930 coming along, the stretched front arches looking powerful and slightly menacing, then WOOOOSH, what a rear end…. Nothing looked that wide and that imposing on the road.

Now there is a scenario I would jump at. As someone who has just turned 60 I enjoyed the 80's to the fullest as I had just left school and had started working in a Bank for the modest sum of £3000 p.a. That seemed like so much money at the time but I could fuel my motorbike for 70p and polo mints were a half pence and a few years earlier my annual golf club membership was 50p but when it went to a £1 the whole village was up in arms.
I had a 1975 930 3ltr Turbo 4 speed briefly in the 80’s, it was brilliant then and I’m sure still is now. You got used to only accelerating in a straight line and not really accelerating at all in the wet. One of a long list of cars I should have kept! Thanks for a great review and for bringing this memories back. If I could have any Porsche now, I’d not have a new one, I’d choose a 911SC from about 1980, the right combination of everything in my opinion.
Great video. It was so nice to see an old classic porsche. This is one of my poster cars too. It's just stunning and amazing to compare how much modern cars have grown in dimensions. Being next to a big lorry in an old low sports car takes some getting used to.😮 Well done, Ped.
I’ve not driven a turbo, but had a 3.2 Carrera same year which had a 5 speed box. Currently drive a 993 Carrera 4. I would say buy a 993 Carrera 6 speed manual. You won’t be disappointed. I describe the unique smell as leather and petrol. 😎

He was offered first refusal on a colleagues 993 when the colleague was selling it - he leant it to my dad for a week and it did the commute, plus a weekend away, grocery shopping etc. Even driving on some cracking roads, he said that although the 993 was outstanding in every way, and much more refined, he ended up not pulling the trigger. He was crazily worried that it would stop being special to him - I know, it’s a great car (993), but it was almost too good!
I'm sure I have mentioned here before but I have never been a fan of this marque but I do see the attraction of them. I did have a friend in the very early 80's who had a very similar car to the one you drove it was white with the big whale tail spoiler and it was left hand drive. The guy was a police officer and volunteered for any overtime going to allow him to buy stunning cars. I always wanted to see someone I knew when I was a passenger in it and hoped they thought I was driving but from memory it never happened. There were some really smart cars in Aberdeen at the time with oil money feeding the economy but that Porsche did stand out.
That Turbo spurned my desire for Porsche at 10yrs old… now 50+ I was planning on getting a 911 but I just couldn’t go for a 997.2 /991 … they just seem 2nd best to me, so I went and got a ‘15 Cayman S it just suits me better and because a 930Turbo is well out of my budget … it’s the only true 911 I want 🤷🏻♂️
I had a 1979 SC in the 90's and that was for me the best 911 era. That and the above 930 are so lovely 😊 Google MDF 643V and its still going minus the spoiler these days. It was classic gold. Very of the time. Many 930's were gold with the black Fuch's wheels.
Like you this is the era of Porsche that I really fell in love with and think the tail was the reason why. I can remember driving up to the local Porsche garage and drooling over them which brings back very fond memories so suppose you could say my first love 😍
I remember a young guy in the office drove a red one of these in the late 70’s (rich dad), looked stunning. My choice of ‘classic’ 911 now would be a 993 Cab. I came very close to buying one 16 years ago but instead opted for a 996, biggest mistake ever….
It’s great to see such genuine motoring enthusiasm. I’m of a similar vintage and remember seeing and hearing one blast it’s way up the middle of Rickmansworth High Street when I was younger… there’s a hill up the middle and it blasted away from the traffic lights. I think that’s what got me hooked on the slightly madder end of motoring.
Had an 82 one in the mid 90's. Alas we ended up in a field on a shockingly wet November night. The heating was non existent in winter and I was getting 14mpg in winter. By god it made me feel good though
My first glimpse in the metal of a 930 turbo was whilst serving in the Army and posted to Germany in 1979. A rumble behind me when out shopping in Minden made me turn around and see this red turbo glide past. I was hooked and still am today a Porsche fan. My perfect model is a targa with no spoilers to mask that classic shape. One day. Head a chance to get one on my 50th birthday in 2009 but had a wobble and had a then new 997 version as I have no mechanical knowledge and needed a reliable turn key car. Loved it but still hankering for that targa. Turbo targa…. Now that would be perfect.
I keep coming back to the 997.2 as the wise buy. I think that for me it straddles the classic and the new perfectly. Naturally aspirated flat 6, hydraulic steering, quite modern interior and an engine which generally does away with the issues or the early water cooled cars (996 & 997.1). I also think that it is one of the nicer looking generations (personally) and it’s also still reasonably small.

I grinned throughout this video. It's hard to understand quite how these cars feel. You've nailed it. I was lucky enough to have one ( the four-speed) in 1990...I was 25. From memory, it cost me £30k. I persuaded a local finance company to attach a large balloon payment to the deal and ended up selling it 3 years later..for 30k. Great value! It was a car that demanded respect...slow in...fast out... super caution in the wet, but wow, did it go above 3.5k rpm. Absolute icon....thanks for sharing Pete 👍

Mid-late 80s 911 in Guards Red with black leather, sunroof and whale tail would be my perfect classic car. The problem with the one you drove is that it's too nice, so any kind of mileage reduces the value. It's the same issue that you have with your Boxter. Not as bad as it would be for a Ferrari or Lambo, but if you can't drive it when you can and want to, what's the point of having it? Great film.
My choice would be a 964 (965) Turbo, the one between the G30 you're driving and the 993. Drove a Carrera 2 when I was 19 and I can still remember that whole drive today (and I'm nearly 47)
I went from a 992 C2S to a 996 C4S Cabrio manual and I have to say I simply enjoy the 996 so much more. Don’t get me wrong, the 992 was a great car, but the 996 feels special. Creaks, squeaks and the odd leak make it more enduring. ‘Classic’ cars are not for the faint hearted as they need TLC and that can be expensive, but to me whilst I can afford it there is nothing that compares. I have a 2022 S3 also so for me the perfect garage (although I don’t have one and am green with envy with your but made up for you building your dream garage dude!)
What a beauty! My ideal version would be the earlier 930 painted in dark, metallic, 1970s brown. It would have to have the three-spoke steering wheel and maybe even a pasha interior instead of the leather. Thanks to your "Vintage Voltage" show, however...I'd be even happier with a regular 911 with 930-look sheetmetal equipped with Moggy's EV conversion kit. That would be my pie-in-the-sky ultimate weekend road warrior. It's lovely to watch you live your dream here, and I hope you can acquire one of these beauties for yourself. Aloha!

I asked my dad to buy one, it was priced £27.777. this was a wee while ago, i remember saying it would be a good investment, he laughed at me, without saying a word. He passed away last year, and I am looking at a cars to replace the loss, sadly this is now out of my budget.
I recall having the Porsche 911 brochure from circa. 1977 and it had a White 930 Turbo in it. Very similar but it had a 3-Spoke Black Steering Wheel and Black Leather seats with Black with White Pinstriped fabric centres. I'd really like a classic 930 Turbo in that exact spec but preferably with a 5-speed gearbox

Funny you mention NC500. That’s what brought me here in the first place a couple of years ago. I live at the start- finish line, and used to drive around those roads in company cars in all weathers.
I’ve always had modern 911’s, but treated myself to a fully restored 911 sc from 1982. The car was stunning but I just didn’t gel with the older cars driving and no air conditioning. Sold it after 6 months.
Great Vid! cant believe I almost bought an 80’s 911 Turbo a few years back, it was on offer for £12k lol….. oh those were the days….. Publicly the cars are 911 Turbo’s I gather only the factory or Porsche internally used 930 designation. I beleive it is derived from the 930 engine code.

The 930 Turbo started my love for the 911 back in the 80's. As I get older, I've started looking at older 911's with so much affection. If only I didn't need six figures to buy one 😅
Yes wow...said it before I was priviledged to drive a 911T sportmatic, bronze in colour. Couldn't get over how sensitive the sreering was and consciously having to keep my hand off the gear stick unless actually seleting the next gear. After that experience getting back into my pride and joy of time (mid 1970's) which was a Chrysler Valiant Town & Country utility with a large 265 cubic inch Hemi straight 6. Low ratio diff but good for the magic ton. Could carry a couple of trail bikes in the tray which the Porsche couldn't haha. I do covert the analogue dash in those Porsches. Hi Ped That is surely near the top of the Classic Porsche car list. Stunning car and fantastic spec & condition. Never driven one, nearest I got was a 2.7 R/S, again a never to be forgotten driving experience. You now have a suitable home for this gem, but do you have an understanding bank manager.🤭
A guy I spoke to on a Porsche group trip had a 1985 911 and owned his own garage business. He basically stated if you’re handy with the spanners and only do shorter drives then go for it. If not then they can be expensive to maintain and a pain (literally) to drive over long distances.

This is one of favourite Porsche's and one I would love to own, considering the price of these things which have gone up considerably in the last 3-4 years, its very aspirational. Even the non turbo variant of this car, I would love to own. Im not sure white totally suits it, its a bit too Miami Vice for me, each to their own.
Yep, pretty much perfect. A local dealer(Tom Ferguson) offered me a genuine factory flat front for £11995; yes, im that old, with a generous allowance for my SC. I test drove the 930 Flachbau and decided it wasn't for me! What on earth was i thinking? I bought a 924 Carrera GT instead
About 5 months ago these rare beasts were £105k & that was for a 100 thou miler in immaculate condition though. Now you will have to pay 125 to 130k. So yes they are going up. My poster car along with the Countach.
Well this is a must watch for all car nuts, the 930 is one of Porsche's best for serious drivers. My 993turbo of 10yrs was a little bit more controllable. They have to be respected!! Hence the name widow makers, when the turbo boost kicking in. I prefer the 993turbo drive over my 992GT3. The driving emotion is incredible. Maintenance wise, they can cost, so do your homework. Thats lovely example has a whale tail, the tea tray doesn't have the big lip, it's flatter.
OMG! Yes one of my faves too, though these days my preference would be closer to the earlier Rennsport that you drove. But that could perhaps extract about a third of a mil from your bank if I'm not mistaken! Hmm, 20bhp more power than a JCW Countryman and only 20kg heavier. And I'm guessing maybe 3 feet lower cg? But you need to haggle Pedro! The sunshine roof lining is baggy, and when you showed the low angle shot at the rear, the bumper is out of line!! So offer them sixty grand!
Breaks my heart….. Around 20 years ago I bought a 1988 ‘E’ registration Porsche Carrera 911 Convertible with only 29,000 miles but with 7 owners! It was the Yuppy era in the 80s when Yuppies would buy one for a few months then sell it… Mine although not a Turbo was White with a Blue Alcantara / Leather interior & a matching Blue Roof. It was mint condition & foolishly , even though it was a weekend car I sold it within months not appreciating what I’d got! I paid £29,000 for it in around 2004 & it flew even though it wasn’t a Turbo. I shudder to think what it would be worth now if I’d kept it 😢
If I could afford a classic and fully restored Porsche, I would take any model of the 1950s 356. Alternatively, its relative the VW Karmann Ghia would be equally good as both are lovely cars.
The last Porsche meet up at Ace cafe saw some beautiful classic Porsches, the flat nose Porsche convertible turned up in its glory, the Porsche SC, 964 and 993 are old money and are cooler than a polar bears claws. I agree the new money Porsche from the 991.1 upwards appears too bloated and missing the essence of a sports car mainly with the turbo engined Porsche.

It's a no brainer Ped. Considering that you don't really need to own a car because you always have Press cars, you really should by a classic instead. It's money in the bank and miles of smiles on the dial at the same time.
F.Y.I. the later 944 Turbo’s, which were 4 cylinder cars, were detuned because they were as fast as a 930. Porsche’s first cars were 4 cylinder e.g. 356 which used mostly VW parts not to mention the 914, 924 and the aforementioned 944. If you want to experience pedals which are bottom hinged try an original VW. Just saying, the 911 isn’t the only Porsche ever made just because it has a flat 6.
Many moons ago a car salesman chum let me have a go in his 911 Targa because i told him he looked like Mel Gibson ( because he did). Now i can drive i'm no novice and i took it to my limit and what i learnt was this car demands respect or it will give you a proper good hiding. If you genuinely like cars you and your mentally measured enough seek out and have a go you will be in for a real treat.

The problem with the one you drove is that it's too nice, so any kind of mileage reduces the value. It's the same issue that you have with your Boxter. Not as bad as it would be for a Ferrari or Lambo, but if you can't drive it when you can and want to, what's the point of having it?

Like you Ped, this is the Porsche of my youth... The modern ones don't hit the spot like the 930 does.
My choice would be a 964 (965) Turbo, the one between the G30 you're driving and the 993.
Drove a Carrera 2 when I was 19 and I can still remember that whole drive today (and I'm nearly 47)
I went from a 992 C2S to a 996 C4S Cabrio manual and I have to say I simply enjoy the 996 so much more. Don’t get me wrong, the 992 was a great car, but the 996 feels special. Creaks, squeaks and the odd leak make it more enduring.
‘Classic’ cars are not for the faint hearted as they need TLC and that can be expensive, but to me whilst I can afford it there is nothing that compares. I have a 2022 S3 also so for me the perfect garage (although I don’t have one and am green with envy with your but made up for you building your dream garage dude!)

I sold my late 80s 3.2 recently, and I kind of miss it. You can just go out and drive these regularly, they're all the better for getting used. 👍

My ideal version would be the earlier 930 painted in dark, metallic, 1970s brown. It would have to have the three-spoke steering wheel and maybe even a pasha interior instead of the leather.
Thanks to your "Vintage Voltage" show, however...I'd be even happier with a regular 911 with 930-look sheetmetal equipped with Moggy's EV conversion kit. That would be my pie-in-the-sky ultimate weekend road warrior.

I asked my dad to buy one, it was priced £27.777. this was a wee while ago, i remember saying it would be a good investment, he laughed at me, without saying a word.
He passed away last year, and I am looking at a cars to replace the loss, sadly this is now out of my budget.

I recall having the Porsche 911 brochure from circa. 1977 and it had a White 930 Turbo in it. Very similar but it had a 3-Spoke Black Steering Wheel and Black Leather seats with Black with White Pinstriped fabric centres. I'd really like a classic 930 Turbo in that exact spec but preferably with a 5-speed gearbox
Wonderful memories the 930 for me as well and i loved the 911S cabriolet or Targa 23:30 which from memory had a 2.4 2.7 engine variants ❤luv the old porches great video. Dave from downunder 😂
It was a groundbreaking car back in the day. Now, it's ancient history, but still a nice car to look at. I don't see many however.
Funny you mention NC500. That’s what brought me here in the first place a couple of years ago. I live at the start- finish line, and used to drive around those roads in company cars in all weathers.
I’ve always had modern 911’s, but treated myself to a fully restored 911 sc from 1982. The car was stunning but I just didn’t gel with the older cars driving and no air conditioning. Sold it after 6 months.

Great Vid! cant believe I almost bought an 80’s 911 Turbo a few years back, it was on offer for £12k lol….. oh those were the days….. Publicly the cars are 911 Turbo’s I gather only the factory or Porsche internally used 930 designation. I beleive it is derived from the 930 engine code.

The 930 Turbo started my love for the 911 back in the 80's. As I get older, I've started looking at older 911's with so much affection. If only I didn't need six figures to buy one 😅
Yes wow...said it before I was priviledged to drive a 911T sportmatic, bronze in colour. Couldn't get over how sensitive the sreering was and consciously having to keep my hand off the gear stick unless actually seleting the next gear. After that experience getting back into my pride and joy of time (mid 1970's) which was a Chrysler Valiant Town & Country utility with a large 265 cubic inch Hemi straight 6. Low ratio diff but good for the magic ton. Could carry a couple of trail bikes in the tray which the Porsche couldn't haha. I do covert the analogue dash in those Porsches. That is surely near the top of the Classic Porsche car list. Stunning car and fantastic spec & condition. Never driven one, nearest I got was a 2.7 R/S, again a never to be forgotten driving experience. You now have a suitable home for this gem, but do you have an understanding bank manager.🤭

A guy I spoke to on a Porsche group trip had a 1985 911 and owned his own garage business.
He basically stated if you’re handy with the spanners and only do shorter drives then go for it.
If not then they can be expensive to maintain and a pain (literally) to drive over long distances.

Actually I found those "sports" seats, such as in this 930 turbo really comfortable, no problem for a long trip.
Drooling here over my keyboard. This is one of favourite Porsche's and one I would love to own, considering the price of these things which have gone up considerably in the last 3-4 years, its very aspirational. Even the non turbo variant of this car, I would love to own. Im not sure white totally suits it, its a bit too Miami Vice for me, each to their own.

Yep, pretty much perfect. A local dealer(Tom Ferguson) offered me a genuine factory flat front for £11995; yes, im that old, with a generous allowance for my SC. I test drove the 930 Flachbau and decided it wasn't for me! What on earth was i thinking? I bought a 924 Carrera GT instead
About 5 months ago these rare beasts were £105k & that was for a 100 thou miler in immaculate condition though.
Now you will have to pay 125 to 130k. So yes they are going up. My poster car along with the Countach.
Well this is a must watch for all car nuts, the 930 is one of Porsche's best for serious drivers. My 993turbo of 10yrs was a little bit more controllable. They have to be respected!! Hence the name widow makers, when the turbo boost kicking in.
I prefer the 993turbo drive over my 992GT3. The driving emotion is incredible.
Maintenance wise, they can cost, so do your homework. Thats lovely example has a whale tail, the tea tray doesn't have the big lip, it's flatter.
OMG! Yes one of my faves too, though these days my preference would be closer to the earlier Rennsport that you drove. But that could perhaps extract about a third of a mil from your bank if I'm not mistaken!

But you need to haggle Pedro! The sunshine roof lining is baggy, and when you showed the low angle shot at the rear, the bumper is out of line!! So offer them sixty grand!

Breaks my heart….. Around 20 years ago I bought a 1988 ‘E’ registration Porsche Carrera 911 Convertible with only 29,000 miles but with 7 owners! It was the Yuppy era in the 80s when Yuppies would buy one for a few months then sell it…
Mine although not a Turbo was White with a Blue Alcantara / Leather interior & a matching Blue Roof. It was mint condition & foolishly , even though it was a weekend car I sold it within months not appreciating what I’d got!
I paid £29,000 for it in around 2004 & it flew even though it wasn’t a Turbo. I shudder to think what it would be worth now if I’d kept it 😢
If I could afford a classic and fully restored Porsche, I would take any model of the 1950s 356. Alternatively, its relative the VW Karmann Ghia would be equally good as both are lovely cars.
The last Porsche meet up at Ace cafe saw some beautiful classic Porsches, the flat nose Porsche convertible turned up in its glory, the Porsche SC, 964 and 993 are old money and are cooler than a polar bears claws. I agree the new money Porsche from the 991.1 upwards appears too bloated and missing the essence of a sports car mainly with the turbo engined Porsche.

It's a no brainer Ped. Considering that you don't really need to own a car because you always have Press cars, you really should by a classic instead. It's money in the bank and miles of smiles on the dial at the same time.
I guess I have to go back a few more years to what I always called a bath tub for my Porsche dream car.
F.Y.I. the later 944 Turbo’s, which were 4 cylinder cars, were detuned because they were as fast as a 930. Porsche’s first cars were 4 cylinder e.g. 356 which used mostly VW parts not to mention the 914, 924 and the aforementioned 944. If you want to experience pedals which are bottom hinged try an original VW. Just saying, the 911 isn’t the only Porsche ever made just because it has a flat 6.

Many moons ago a car salesman chum let me have a go in his 911 Targa because i told him
he looked like Mel Gibson ( because he did). Now i can drive i'm no novice and i took it to my limit
and what i learnt was this car demands respect or it will give you a proper good hiding.
If you genuinely like cars you and your mentally measured enough seek out and have a go
you will be in for a real treat.
You forgot the 964.
