Porsche 930 Turbo S update; We put it on the dyno to find out just how much power it really has

- After the trip to Spain, my tweaked 'Sonderwunsch' Porsche 930 Turbo S was fully run in and once Jaz Porsche had completed its first service, I took it to Lichfield Motors where they put it on the dyno to see how powel it really produces.

Don't ever be concerned with being geeky. Pretty sure that's part of what most of us are here for!
I certainly am. 👍
Correct
Amen💯
Agreed. Love that Harry uses scales to weigh cars!
Precisely!
In that last shot of the car accelerating away, the exhaust sound was great. To my ear, it sounds more like a race car than a road car. You can tell right away that there is a lot of fun to be had with that car.
Fantastic video and really liked the outcome of the dyno run but with those engine mods it’s not surprising. Glad you’ve worked out the issue with the “supposed “mpg.
Fantastic video! Loved the details.
You should get one of those GPS Dragy or V boxes to give us some performance figures for cars like this 911. It's not really necessary for modern supercars, but classic cars like the 930 or Testarossa it would put the performance into perspective for us. That 911 is definitely a keeper. You did well to get a hold of something so unique and special...especially as you bought it before prices went so high.
Great video Harry
What a huge relief on the mpg!👍
Very informative, one of your best
What a beast! It must be so amazing to drive
Who’s a lucky boy!
harry please do a real world comparison between your car and a ruf yellowbird
Brilliant
Do the black headlight bezels look weird to anyone else?...Chrome for me....it looks like Robert Smith..:)
Who’s a silly boy Harry will you ever live that down.
So in theory you've got a 930 GT2!
Arguably, one of the best looking 911's of all time.
Without a doubt. Such a beauty
Don't have to argue with me, I agree completely.
100% !
The rear picnic table looks a bit crap.
@@Pete-z6e Nah,its forgivable to let people know what it is.A true legend👍
I love Harry's content, my 7 year old boy loves Harry's content. Who doesn't enjoy a Harry's Garage video on a Sunday!
Paint looks great.
You have brought him up well!
Sunday is best day.
Lol. I was brushing my teeth this morning and I thought to myself “oh boy there’ll be a Harry’s Garage video today!” Harry is the man!
Don’t forget Harry’s Farm that’s good too👍
Not to mention an episode from Iain at Tyrell's Classic Workshop!
What a good end to the weekend :)
The reason for the low MPG is so funny and unique, it just adds to the quirks and loves on this car.
Great content as always, cheers.
Wow! 391hp with a car that light! I would LOVE to be able to drive something like that for a day. Incredible machine!
Did you see how quickly it revs! Fantastic car👍
crank up the BOOST
@@Freimopp777 I was looking for this comment :-)
Here we are 30 years later and modern technology has brought us identical weight sports car from Gazoo "RACING" with... wait for it... 228BHP!! It never trickles down for the blue collar worker. Only the rich "deserve" real sports cars even 30 years later.
@@idokwatcher2062 Gazoo make porsche parts?
Cracking car and history. Never realised Litchfield was that busy a place so must be doing something right.
@@integralevideo Utter rubbish.
Yeah - marketing
Yes, crazy busy. I was shocked at number of ramps and cars there.
Had my Ariel Atom serviced there a couple of times as the Ariel factory were quoting several months waiting times (pre-pandemic) and always found them excellent and competitive on pricing. Lots of interesting exotics (including supercars etc,not just Nissan GTRs) to go and browse around while you wait for your car to be done. MM
To be honest based on the results they get from GTRs compared to the rest of the world their work is pretty average.
I read recently that the 78 930 was tested by a US magazine when new. The numbers they got were over 250 HP AT THE REAR WHEELS. Even accounting for less loss because its an aircooled rear engine car, (no water pump or driveshaft) that is impressive considering the factory claimed power for the US model was 265 HP MOL. But this would probably not be the first or last time that Porsche was "conservative" in their claims.
Finally!! I’ve been waiting for this follow-up on this and your doing everything I wished, mainly dyno and explanation of the 11 mpg, which really annoyed me
I'd have thought the figures on Harry's paper maps vs the odometer reading in Spain might have given the game away much earlier?
Where is the Lancia Harry ?
What a car (you have been maligning) Harry! Very special and an even better buy than you initially thought.
Brave of you to admit this faux pas, but a relief at the same time.
I love this car, a worthy addition to the garage.
Great video Harry, regarding the speedo, I think it would be difficult for anyone to ever assume that this modification had been carried out.
As an ex-Porsche tech, I would advise to fit a cover of that “brilliant idea” of the three uncovered fuses in the rear left of the engine bay. There isn’t a Porsche cover but I recall they are available from several Porsche specialists in Germany. There is also a cover for the relay board, another Porsche “brilliant idea”.
There are numerous “brilliant ideas” on the 930, it’s just amazing that within its 15 year lifespan, they were never rectified, as virtually all could have been done at zero cost (the car was expensive enough…)
They range from electrical items in the line of fire from road spray, to the atrociously designed fuse box under the front bonnet
Until flashed on the motorway due to false assumptions regarding speed calculations
My 2016 Ford Transit has taken over as king of shitty designs.
Your Spanish trip video inspired me Harry and I’d like to thank you. I’ve been driving around Spain and Portugal for the past week, aided by the Michelin map you recommended and enjoying the scenic routes through national parks and gorgeous countryside. I also took a ferry across the Bay of Biscay, Plymouth to Santander, and I’ll be staying a night in a Parador hotel as recommended by you. The roads here are glorious and as you reported they’re so much quieter than UK roads that one can really enjoy the drive rather than always feeling hemmed in by other traffic. Once again, many thanks for the inspiration.
Good news on the MPG. Loved the Spanish trip!. I found a great vid - "Check out Why 70% of Spain is Empty" from RealLifeLore - explaining why the parts of Spain Harry went through are so empty.
A gorgeous Porsche, a load of GT-Rs and Billy Idol on the stereo. That’s the recipe for a good day.
Smart motorways. Deadly. A child could see that they're a bad idea.
Oh dear! Another 'absolute keeper' in the collection!
I feel a day of reckoning may be coming for the 'one-in one-out' policy!
Love the miles per gallon mistake! Love it to see that even the pro’s can make these human kind of mistakes, thank you for your honesty Harry, great video as always!
I love this car! My personal favourite in Harry's Garage and i've never been bothered for 930 Turbo's previously.
This car could make 100hp and I’d still drive this car. Such a beautiful machine!
Great to see you're having fun with this car, Harry. I am owning the "twin" of it... at least engine wise... for 22 years now and can therefore relate to your enthusiasm very well.
I love those wheels, absolutely beautiful, and especially at speed! And on one of the best versions of the 930 ever. Question though: was the bad relay that caused the cutting out the black one in the middle of the three, that seems to have "Made in China" in white lettering on it?
I must say Harry ive been watching your content for a while and very much enjoy each video but this is my favorite by far. The update on such a gorgeous 911, the Litchfield tour and then the MPG story...i cracked up laughing in the km vs mile discrepancy source....please never stop behing the most humble and knowledgeable auto journo in the planet....
Thank you, Harry. Looks beautiful, sounds beautiful and goes well. Incredible performance hike without any increase in stress. As for being a bit of a plonker? Well, you can't get everything right! But you certainly got a result with this one! ENJOY!
That is a beautiful car. Never sell it 😍
11:17 There's engine HP, and then there's the one that counts - power to the wheels. 329.6.
Its pretty much perfect - well done Harry
The best engine mods you can do with a 930 engine is a Porsche 3.6 crank (to make a 3.45 engine, with correct Mahle pistons), twin-plugged heads, GT2 cams, matched ball-bearing turbo and a Motec or similar engine management system. Hand-fabbed exhaust. Individual throttle bodies if you are a true nut. I've done all but the last. 512 hp/467 ft-lbs to the wheels at 1.0 bar on pump gas. With a bunch of supporting tranny, clutch, brake and suspension mods. These cars are real platforms for stupid power on a light body, but handle with care. You can tell by Harry's voice how much he digs the raw, analog feel of this car...
I am running a similar setup that you have Chris at TurboKraft built my motor but running on E85 with MotecM130, I think we ran 621@1bar543ftlbs with a Arizona out side temp @110f so not excactly cool Temps like these old girls like. Are you on Pelican?
@@kevinbodman1011 I remember Chris. He was at the shop where I got my car built, then left for TurboKraft, as I recall. My builder was Bob Holcombe. When I knew Chris, he wasn't yet a grease monkey, more of a supervisor/customer interface kind of dude. Nice guy, though, a definite enthusiast. I'm not on Pelican anymore. I had kids, and now my track days are pretty scarce...., and this car as built is not a daily-type automobile...
There's nothing better than the air cooled GENUINE Porsche 911. Nothing. The new ones can be faster but who cares. These are the real thing. Normally I prefer 964 and 993 myself but this particular Turbo S must be one of the best looking cars ever made.
The standard Porsche 930 cam timing's like the same they'd fit to Your lawn mower...."
Incredibly geeky? Of course! And that's why I am here. Proper petrol-head content brought to me in proper British understatement-style. It doesn't get better than that, does it?
Oh sometimes it does ..... discussing gearbox-damage or Espada engines with another classic British gentleman comes to mind.
Thank You for "incredibly geeky" in "Harry's Garage", Sir.
And by the way, thank You for convincing Ian Tyrell to start his own RUclips channel.
That’s a keeper for sure
One of my favourite all time cars such a beautiful car to look at ❤️
Hi Harry,I have said previously,You are in a league of your own, Truly you are the best at presention,Personal delivery Perfection personified,As you know means can not be improved upon.
Speedo in kmh records in miles, fuel sold by the litre and you work it out in MPG. 😅
That must be a one of a kind gauge...funny and wonderful car. If I won the powerball and could buy any car on the planet, that would be the one I'd buy. Thank you for sharing it with us all....boy I wish I could buy it off you. :) And not, it is in a the best home on the planet by far.
Great car! I owned a 911 Turbo S2 (25 special order cars, re-engineered by Andial in LA under Porsche supervision), and it was a 3.4 litre engine that I had dyno'd at 378 hp. Porsche had it listed at 330 bhp. Not a Turbo S, but a great car (with a bit of oversteer).
BLOODY GREAT BUY THAT ONE HAZZA!!!!! 😜👏😎😘😜🔥🔥💋❤️🔥🐎♥️🐂🐂👌👌👍💪💪
À very special car indeed. That’s a proper racing guru engine upgrade, and still quite a liveable daily driver. Would be a proper GT with a bigger tank for a decent range, despite the still thirsty mpg.
Possibly my favourite car in the garage.
What a beauty, I had no less than a dozen posters of 930s on my walls as a kid growing up in the 80s. Fantastic video, keep them coming, we'll keep watching!
I'm surprised RUclips didn't demonetise you with that radio playing Harry.
I like the red undercoating 🤩
GEEKY RULES HAZZA!!!!!!! 💪👍👌🐂🐎❤️🔥❤️🔥🔥👏😜😜
the engine sound much rawer in the inside shots, in the outside shots when it drives away from the camera its really mild really.
wich is nice.
absolutely love your enthusiasm harry! its just what life is all about....love it
What a hilarious story regarding the fuel economy issue. Proves that every the brightest of car minds can be occasionally fooled. Thoroughly enjoy your videos
Fab 930 Turbo S, must be one of the best ones on the planet. Love the colour and the spec! Great video as always. Thanks Harry!
All things considered, porsche is the greatest car manufacturer in the world imo
When he explained the mpg thing i was like bruhhhh really? :d You really need to start using sat nav :D
I love your 930. Its interesting how Porsche evolved from air to water cooling. A 930 turbo is 300 or 330 Bhp for the S, the water cooled N/A 996 is 300 or 320Bhp, very similar outputs, evolution.
What are you? Like James May's childhood friend?
If anyone else in the celebrity world owned this car I'd hate them for it - but the thing I like about Harry is the idea that I could be there with him and loving it together. He's like my Dad, but with a love of cars as big as my own. No envy at all. Well, maybe a little bit... lol.
This MPG "solution" is wonderful! I'm so glad you figured this out. Never a dull moment with an imported export lol
Those Ruf wheels are still the best looking Porsche wheels ever made.
They’re not genuine Porsche wheels, the factory never fitted them
Btw, I don’t like them, “German back street tuner” wheels
The standard wheels are far nicer
Absolutely loved this video and information. What an amazing car.
Love the overnight 60% improvement in fuel consumption figures.
100hp more than a stock Toyota Camry family sedan and 35 less than a 10 year old pushrod Camaro. Progress.
This is my fave of all your collection. 👌👌
This level of geeky detail is why this is the best motorcar channel on RUclips...
Great that the mysteries of this car are now revealed and good to see that you instincts for great engineering were spot on!
Don't know if it's just me but i love how Porsche's hunker down at the rear when giving it full send.
It's not my car, but I love it!
Thanks a lot for the new video Harry, you're the best! Hello from Finland!
I have watched many of Harry's videos. This is the first car I actually want.
Thank you Harry
Question if I may.
Your barn is about to begin by a tornado and you only have time to get 1 car and 1 bike to safety
Which one of each do you run to save and why 🤔
Great work Harry.
Which were you more pleased with; the BHP figures or MPG figures?
I think that the ratio of these figures is the most pleasing
I covet this car even more now. An absolute beauty.
Me too. It’s intensely desirable.
I think what makes Harry's Garage and Ian Tyrrell's videos so watcheable for enthusiasts is they're the embodiment of what Walter Rohrl meant when he said "You can't treat a car like a human being - a car needs love".
*Very interesting, Porsches often leave me a bit cold but that's glorious*
Best car channel on YT. Its like the old Top Gear, many of us grew up with. Just about the cars, not the silly presenters.
I had a supercharged Range Rover sport and occasionally I did 9mpg… with my heavy right foot…
Not surprised with a Big heavy bruiser like that.
930 Turbo? Come on Harry, are you from The School of Redundancy School?
I LOVE that car! How fabulous to see you have that pleasant surprise, and fall even deeper in love! Fantastic video. Thanks Harry.
5pm on a Sunday is the new 20:00 Sunday evening. Fascinating content as ever and keep the technical stuff coming Harry.
I would love you to have a go in Phil Morrissons rwb porsche to compare to yours 👍🏻
Here we have a true Unicorn 930: a car that spent a large segment of its life in California and yet it wasn’t “enhanced” with all the usual California mods of the day, like the chisel nose and so forth. It may be the only 930 survivor that wasn’t molested.
Good show.
Loved the bit about the kmh/mph problem. Reminded me of a Tulip navigation run I did with my wife which requires dead reckoning using the trip meter. Unfortunately the trip reset and the mph/kmh switch are next to each other in an S2000 and my wife inadvertently switched to kmh! Needless to say we got quite lost!
heel and toe: easy fix on a G-series Porsche. you can adjust brake and clutch pedal heights with a couple of spanners
My favourite in your collection. Fabulous
I hear your explanation about the MPG, but on a long run, the 22 MPG is still on the low side for a long-haul trip. For City Driving, 18-22 would be acceptable, but the long hauls you did in Spain should have given you minimum 25 MPG and as much as 28. I still recommend checking the AFR for through cruising, and WOT on boost. Also, ensure your Cats are not blocked. I've tuned a 930 that made 450 WHP and 450 lbft torque on 1 bar, and it was smooth and perfectly well-behaved. It had forged pistons, and I believe the turbo was not stock. We ran EFI with 2 injectors per cylinder, but the 2nd set never came on as we never had to pass 1 bar to achieve the 450 WHP. The engine tune at high rpm sounded like a Honda V-Tech smooth rather than a Horizontally Opposed engine, which is rather a compliment.
Go to 11:03 to avoid all the waffle.
280hp for the 930 Turbo at the crank, 330hp for the 930 Turbo S at the crank, 390hp for your 930 Turbo S at the wheels.... that's a hell of a lot more than 30%, that's like 455hp at the crank with a simple calculator, so that's approximately/almost 73% increase 😅
My favorite car in the collection. A shame Porsche did not put more time and effort in developing the 930. This car and the Ruf BTR perfectly demonstrate the true potential. Just love it.
I wonder if having a mileometer mecanism, counting miles instead of km, on a km/h speedo is a hack for "low km" on the counter.
If only the face was changed, the speed readings would be very low (38% lower). So every "km" that car adds is actually 1.61 km.
Thank you for your videos, Harry, I´ve been enjoying them for years.
Hello Harry:
Greetings from America. Your 930S is truly "weapon grade", beautiful car.
The dyno # of 391hp; is that at the wheels? If so, the crank #'s would be somewhere around 420-440hp. Very close to Ruf CTR numbers. Would you happen to know which K27 turbo is used. That turbo could be spec'd with different housings depending on the desired hp curve.
Best wishes,
JP NY.
One would have assumed on the trip to Spain you were getting the MPG from fuel used + distance traveled. When those numbers didn't gel that would have triggered the idea that the distance being recorded wasn't right. But we can forgive a man on a great driving holiday producing so much fab content for overlooking that.
Interesting … The Litchfield dyno seems to state 0.843 efficiency from engine to wheel which is 15.7% losses. It feels a bit low figure but be it so. In some other vids Ive seen 996 loose about 18% via gearbox, final drive, half shafts, wheel and contact. The 930 5 speed gearbox is supposed to be 930 (or later G50/50 ?) … I wonder are the teeth cut straight?
According to the Frere/Dron bible 934 cams are:
Inlet 45 btdc/90abdc (315)
Exhaust 95 bbdc/49 atdc (324)
The overlap is thus huge 94 degrees for a turbo.
And 3.3 Turbo S has
Inlet 20 btdc / 70 abdc (270)
Exhaust 72 bbdc/ 30 atdc (282)
And the overlap is 50 deg.
If you then consider the 964 Turbo S 3.6:
Inlet 2 btdc / 54 abdc (236)
Exhaust 43 bbdc / 3 atdc (226)
Giving a very “modern” only 5 deg overlap and probably a lower consumption (?).
You can still accurately weigh with 1 non-working cell: use all 4 as normal (one won't read); note down numbers on 3 working axles; swap non-working cell with one that works, and take reading in the working cell's swapped position. (The 2 other working cells will read the same.)
Hence, you have now 4 good readings, after a slight bit of faffing.
You could work with just one working cell, if you swapped this to all 4 corners in turn...
Proper gentleman and baller rounded into one.
For a 911 or 930 running a 915 or G50 transmission, generally accepted dyno correction factors for drivetrain power loss vary from 9% to 15%. Using this range, Harry's 930S is probably producing HP at the flywheel from 363HP to 388HP. The midpoint of that range is 376HP. Any of those figures are very impressive for a single turbo mechanical wastegate air cooled engine from 1989.
