    This is basically what I've been preaching since I bought my gorgeous 996.2 over 4 years ago. The difference is back then people at cars and coffee would raise their eyebrows at me like I was just making excuses for my p.s. cheap Porsche, and now they all node in agreement and lament they hadn't bought one before the prices went up.

      Yep. I had a very similar experince with my '99 that I bought 5 years ago.
      I had a guy with a 912 Targa tell me that my car was less of a Porsche because Toyota was consulted on the production of the 996. I laughed myself silly with that comment.

    Great video! I bought my 996.1 in Ocean Blue Metallic about 15 years ago (for a great deal on an almost new 911!). Previous owner did the IMS and clutch, and also took great care of it. I modified it as well, lowered, wheels, exhaust, etc. I have always loved the car, but there were times I really considered converting the front end to the 997 headlight style. At one point, I almost ordered everything for the conversion, but luckily the seller was a jerk, so I held off. Glad I did, as I ended up appreciating the lights and its "quirkiness" if you will. In terms of ownership, the car has been absolutely amazing. Bullet-proof. I have only changed oil, done regular maintenance, and it's been my most reliable German car, even over prior vehicles I've owned such as Mercedes and Audi. Last year I almost sold it for nearly double the price I purchased for, but once again, I held off. I love it so much, I ended up buying another 911 dream car! Liked and subscribed!

    A word on rust - 996s *can* rust, especially the early (8/98 and earlier build) cars. Clogged drains will lead to rust in the sunroof, deck lid, and hood. Leaves and mud building up in the rear arches can cause rust behind the arch edges, door latches mounting points, and in the sills.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Год назад +3

      Yes! It’s metal, all metal can rust. Even the aluminum doors on the Porsche 928 can develop aluminum oxide, really messes up the paint. The point I was making in the video is that it’s a lot less, and in most cases…a none issue compared to earlier air cooled Porsche’s.

    You mention some points that no one else is talking about. I wanted a GT3 about six years ago. I considered a 996 or 997 GT3. I preferred the styling and interior of the 997 GT3. The 997 GT3 is a bit more civilized. Price was also a factor as 996s were about $60-70k while 997s were $80-90k. In the end I found a mint red 997 GT3 out of California that I am happy with. During the search I drove a mint red 12k miles 996 GT3 here south Florida. It was a beast and for sale at only $62k. How times have changed!

    I have a mint black 03 Carrera with 55,000kms on the clock. Factory aero kit and wheels. No mods other than the IMS solution. Starting to appreciate massively in Australia now. Not that I’d ever sell it but nice to see as they are a truly beautiful car to look at and drive. At least it has character. The 997, 991 and 992 are soulless to look at apart from a few select models like the 997 GT3 RS 4.0. The brand new 992.2 GT3 is finally starting to show a bit of that 911 character but the last decade or so have been boring in the 911 world IMO.

      Thx 🙏🏻 and ohh, Please research if you can and want to , deeply what you know and hear about the spun camshaft issue on the Porsche 997/996 Turbo Mezger engine. What is it and does it happen often?..on many forums it is talked about a lot, but none of the famous Porsche youtubers mention it at all as a con on the model. Only hear pros 🤷🏼
      Is the problem a forum ghost 👻 or is it real.
      Best regards
      Carl

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Год назад +1

      Yes I definitely know about it. All aircooled 911 engines were Mezger engines, so they’re not bulletproof…especially the 2.7’s. So it’s an older engine that was refined over and over, but not perfect. Most problems happen when you up the boost and track the car.. So a stock car is far less likely to have issues. A bigger problem than the spun camshafts are the coolant lines, they need to be welded/pinned…so they don’t blow off under heavy load(upped boost for extended periods).
      Don’t let the internet scare you, the Mezgers are incredible engines. Don’t go crazy with the boost and you’ll be okay! 💯💯

    Interesting view of the 996. A 996/997 will rust in some countries, the UK is quite bad for rust. Rear wheel arches, are very prone to corrosion, particularly the C4S and Turbo models. the sills/rockers where the doors close, a very odd place! and front wheel arches. My C4S is 19 years old, all the interior trim is in great condition, the worst trim section is the plastic console, that can easily covered in leather. In the UK a good 996 is currently increasing in value around 7% per year.

      The rusting issues are much much less than earlier air cooled 911’s, they’re built completely different. Any place with salt covered roads…that’s bad for all cars even here in the states

    Great job! Love the thoughts. I’ve owned two 986s and a 996 and all three had major engine problems by 150k kms (100k miles), also window regulators (they stop dropping), also ignition switch, and fried pcm’s under the drivers seat, and clunking lower control arms and on and on. Inexpensive yes but for good reason. All that said, lots of car for the buck and they can actually be used as a daily driver. Just my 2 cents but the 986 is a better driving experience than the 996 but the stigma of owning a Boxster versus a 911 is a hard pill to swallow. Cheers!

      No stigma with the Boxster here! It’s a great car!!🔥🔥 I didn’t dive into the drivetrains because it turns into a 40 minute video, but 996’s & 997.1’s share the same M96/M97 motor. Prices on 996’s are directly related to production numbers, it was a huge success for Porsche.

    I would be mostly concerned about the most famous problems tied with 996 - and thats problematic engines. Cylinders are cracking and over 200 k km most of them are least egg shaped, headers nikasil coating is cracking which cause your engine will "eat" piece of metal (result is complete destruction of engine), stretched valves, leakings and much more. Cracked dashboards for 1 000 dollars is just paradisal music compared to these nightmares tied to an engines.....
    There is reason 996 is called one of most problematic 911 ever....

      Hi 👋🏻 I hear you! I know all about those engines better than anyone.. I did a video on the M96/M97 engines found on 911’s from 1998-2008 (996-997.1). The video wasn’t algorithm friendly, so we had to put it on private 🤷. Maybe when I get better at doing videos, I’ll give it another shot.

    Early 996 coupe only sub 3000lb 300hp 911 ever. 1999 cars built in 1998 are limited, prices will keep rising. Buy one now.

      When equipped with the original 16” wheels and manual seats, they’re some of the lightest modern cars ever made. They’re even lighter/stiffer than 993’s were, a huge advantage in construction.

      I have a 1999 996 6-speed manual base Carrera. Agreed. It's the one to own.

      1999 is the last year with mechanical throttle, it’s the most responsive feeling!⚡️⚡️

    Only the GT3 and the Turbo have real P engines (Metzger). The Carrera engines are crap..!

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Месяц назад

      Almost every aircooled Porsche is technically a Mezger, because Hans Mezger had his hands in all of them. So, it’s definitely not just the GT3 & tt’s.
      Thanks for watching 👊👊

      That is clear…. I own a 993. What i want to say is that only 996 turbos and GT3 have the „real“ engines..!

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Месяц назад

      They’re both great engines. The best thing about the Mezger engine’s is simplicity. Simple to service, to rebuild, and tune.

    • @alsoadriver
      @alsoadriver Месяц назад

      ..the Metzger engine is developed by an engineer without restriction in cost. Just quality and a real sportscar engine. The 996 Carrera engine without the dry sump lubrification system is a „budget engine“. Also the cylinder coating is not worth to talk about. Most of these engines don‘t even last 100k km..!
      This are 2 complete different worlds.! The Metzger is top calss….and the regular 996 Carrera engine is not worthy of Porsche.

      Haha 😂 I actually listen to RUclips vids at 1.5X speed! Try slowing it down to .75x. I know it’s not for everyone, still figuring out how to make videos. It’s been a learning process..

    The truth is the 911 is the poor man's 928. Sorry - I gotta call balls and strikes. the 928 was European "Car" of the Year 1979. No other sports car including the 911 has ever won "Car" of the year. The 928 has won 2 production car land speed record at Bonneville (1986 and 2020) - the 911 has exactly won none. Even 911 enthusiast Magnus Walker has started his 928 collection - its Now or Never for the 928 still the biggest bang for the buck in classic Porsches. Singer/RWB/RUF could easily reimagine 928s - its just a matter of time before someone specializes in customizing and outlawing 928s - There is no substitute.

      Love the idea of a RUF/Singer type Porsche 928, it would be killer! ⚡️

      …Are you sure?… 928 was meant to replace the 911 for good, which goal has never been achieved…as truth in 2022 is 911 is still in production while 928 has long ago disappeared from production as 944 & 968 did!…

      The current 991/992 have more in common with the 928 than the old school air cooled 911’s ever did. So yes, Porsche basically turned the 911 into a grand tourer…like a 928.

      @@HernanSpeed - Well, as for me I’d put a 928 with its front instaled V8 engine rather in the same "league" as a Mustang, than a 911 with its inherent unbalance of 40/60 distribution weight, due to its flat-six rear instaled engine, resulting in a completely different car behaviour, compared to whatever front engined GT car on the market!…
      But ok, different drivers = different aproach to the matter…

      The 928 has a perfect 50/50 weight distribution, an engineering masterpiece….definitely no Mustang 😎🤌
