- Gary Oak. Ash Ketchum's original Pokemon Rival. Gary has reoccurring appearances in the Pokemon anime, even having the possibility to show up in Pokemon Journeys. But in every new season of the Anime, Gary has shown to constantly change and grow. From wanting to be a Pokemon trainer to becoming a Pokemon researcher. To being arrogant and cocky, to becoming humble and mature. We see Gary's character growth throughout the series and take a look as to how humility was Gary's greatest teacher in life and how it's the very lesson that he teaches to Ash Ketchum to this day.

I always loved how Gary changed. He's grown much more than Ash. Though Ash being reset every region is not his fault, more the writer's.
But writer has changed after Diamond and Pearl.
Ash age is reset too but experience dont reset
Damn. I liked Gary, but now I have respect for his character. The way you portrayed him is probably how the writers would have wanted and never would I have thought of him this way. You sure have learned a lot with the hiatus you took; it sure was for the better.

He is always one of the best characters for me.
Gary is probably my favorite character from the anime.
Losing dose hurt but it makes a great way of learning to become a better person.
And now Gary looks at Ash as his closest friend. I really loved how Gary tells him "best friends till the end" the last time we met him back in the Sinnoh series.

Great video. It was a little heartwarming for some reason, listening to you speak of Gary's journey. It reminds me that people are capable of great change if they work at it, and maybe, just maybe a tiny bit of hope that we can work at the parts of ourselves we aren't as proud of.

Not Important Person and Green from the Pokémon manga didn’t start out as a peace of shit. He was objective focus and didn’t take red seriously but that makes sense since green spent years in jhoto training under chuck before the series officially started. Red had to work to earn greens respect just as how green eventually did so likewise.

I’ve seen people analyze Gary’s character and I’m amazed every time.
For example, one explains his growth and how it’s usually at night. In Kanto, his appearances are in daytime or with light shining on him. In Johto, his character growth appears at nighttime. Even in Sinnoh, it’s sunrise or sunset.
The posts I read explained it better and his relationship with Ash.
I loved how yours focuses on his humility and how he’s a teacher and friend to Ash. I would love to see him in Journeys.
Same I also wanted his return badly.
He has also come in Pokemon Chronicles where he is researching about extinct pokemons.

*EVEN before the change,* right from the first scene shown in anime, I felt that Gary was a genuinely good lad and that the arrogance was just a facade. He was never truly mean-intended in his teasing, he was like a big brother in this regard. So while Gary did drastically change his demeanour, in essence, he has continued to be a great lad. Also, from what I gather, this is how the author of the Pokémon meant it to be since Gary has a real-life prototype who is also, supposedly, a good person.
Let’s be honest, watching arrogant Gary get his ass whooped by Giovanni’s mewtwo was satisfying.

I’m not sure if I would completely blame Ash’s immaturity for his behavior during their battle after Orange League. Ash can be immature, but he was being rude to Gary during the battle because he expected the same treatment after years of being bullied. He continued to be suspicious for a while even though Gary continued being nice, which is still understandable. I love how eventually Ash grew to be more relaxed around Gary and accepted his kindness. If you watch all the episodes where Gary makes an appearance you can see how well they do this transition.
I'm surprised their friendship now in journeys.
