You can skip the oven technique and use a spoon or butter knife to pop the flesh out. You can also steam the halves to help the flesh release from the coconut.
Thank you to all my recent subscribers, let's continue to build this family and support each other.
For the books, knives, and kitchen gear I use and recommend, check out the description!
Hey. Thanks for the special acknowledgement.❤️
Instead of baking how can we do it on stovetop? How long should we keep it on the stove?
Steam it so that the shell releases from the coconut.
Thanq, 👍👍
Hiyee 🙋♀️... My father taught me the same way to crack open a coconut...I do it each time I need to do it...😊
Good idea!
Alternate is to ziplock store the coconut halves with the shells in the freezer overnight. Next morning as it thaws the meat will seperate from the shell and also the dark coat automatically. You won't have to peel it and lose so much meat-oil-nutrition.
Also try roll the coconut over flame to burn-remove the remnant coir fibres and wash it before cracking, helps minimise the mess/fibres getting in the coconut water as you drain into the glass.
One more tip, there will always be 3 ridges on the coconut shell, find the widest section between the three and hit it hard with a rolling pin/heavy knife/sickle. It will crack open at once, with just one hit (expertise).
Although we rely on traditional grating tool to grate it fresh holding the shell itself, that way the dark coat doesn't get in the food too much. Namaste from Mangalore, Southern India🙏
Great tips!! Thanks
That... was an outstanding comment. Seriously. I actually just ordered a coconut to try this on. I don't even LIKE coconut, though I have some great baking recipes that call for it. Thank you! Gods, I wish all YT comments had that kind of non-offensive applicability!
I love the fact that even though you have expertise at opening and caring for coconuts, you still proceeded to watch a video on how to open a coconut and tell us your knowledge. True hero. 🙏🏽
@@MB-su4tr um... "nutrients" weren't alive to begin with. Moreover, a large chunk of the "fresh food" you consume now has been frozen. If you're thinking it "destroys" them, HEATING does orders of magnitude more damage to a foodstuff's nutritional value than freezing. Now, REPEATED freezes and thaws, that's bad news, but one or two? She'll be right.
That's great information @RN, thank you! I love coconut but have battled the shells for the meat constantly, lol. Thanks again from Northern Arizona, USA 🤙🏽
Iam from South India a coconut farmer. We use fresh coconut daily in all dishes we make. We just break with a heavy knife open drain the water grate the coconut and use it. Coconut is very healthy food
Sach me :D
Thank you @siva kumar. What is it good for?
Hardly it takes 30 minutes to get get the coconut ready to cook in this method. It's more than the time taken to prepare a coconut chutney from fresh coconut just by breaking and scraping.🤪
@@whiteflame8249 In different parts of India, the coconut is utilised in a variety of ways.
Some examples -
Fresh grated coconut is added to dry vegetable and meat dishes. It lends a nice texture and taste.
In areas where fresh coconut is not easily available, sun dried coconut is used in dishes. It lends a deep flavor.
Also, Coconut milk is added to some regional curries. Plainly ground coconut is also added to many masalas and curries.
Coconut flakes, paste and milk are also used in a variety of Sweets.
IF NO GRATER THEN JUST USE A SMALL STURDY KNIFE TO SLICE THE COCONUT FLESH INTO SMALL PIECES AND THEN USE A GRINDER . HARDLY TAKES A FEW MINUTES FOR THE WHOLE PROCESS TO BE OVER.
Hint: If youo open two holes, one will let air in and the other will let coconut water out in a stream. I grew up in Miami with a coconut tree in our front yard, one whose trunk was curved in such a way as to make it easy to climb. We didn't have knives, so we used the curb by the road and used basically the same technique. We ate lots of fresh coconut. Good video!
There is a tool for eating grapefruits. It's a flexible knife, mine is from plastic. After opening the coconut, drive this between the pulp and the shell, and wiggle your way around. It's safer than a normal knife, and more flexible. Works perfect!
You are right to locate the hole that is softer than the other two, and enlarge it to pour out the water. However, here's a tip that will make the coconut water flow freely every time. Pierce one of the "other two" holes (doesn't have to be very large). Now, proceed with putting the corkscrew on the larger hole. When you pour the water, you will see that the water flows very freely from the large hole because air enters the smaller hole, preventing a vacuum from forming inside the coconut. Happy coconutting! 😁 😁 😁
How does air get in the other hole if they are all on the bottom?
That’s how I was taught as we Puerto Rican’s use fresh coconuts for cooking and deserts.
@@claygirl6133 Yes. We Indians also use a lot of fresh coconut in our cooking.
That’s the scientific method for you, wow!
@@NoBody-ro3xj Tilt it up so that the liquid's surface is between the two holes you made.

Haha yeah....I hope you didn't think I was just going to smash the coconut on a rock. Tools not in the literal sense but tools that you wouldn't really have in your kitchen.
@@KhalilOmar Yeah... Sorry dude. l couldn't resist the opportunity to bust your chops, all in fun. l've been husking and opening, since l was a kid, and never used any tools. Well... l did have to give 'em a whack or two on a rock. So. l guess that counts as a 'stone age' tool. However, l did learn something new from this video. l love to make crafts out of the shells, an getting the meat out of the shell without cracking it isn't always easy. Heating it in the oven, and then letting it cool is brilliant. So, thank you for that. Can't wait to try it. Take care, and thanks for being a good sport.
@@KhalilOmar Well then the title should not read ' No screw driver' right! Anyhow as for smashing it on rock or a similar hard surface, that's how we do it in India at home. Just crack it slightly on the kitchen platform and it's done! And yeah that's the way as shown we scoop out the coconut flesh too.
@Hemangi Vyas I remember when working in New Delhi, the young chefs appreciated this technique.
It said no hammer or screwdriverr needed.

I agree with your comment! I do like Paula Deen aswell.
(for people who do not have an oven or don't want to use it)just break the coconut into two halves and throw them into the freezer for like an hour or so. Take them out after a while and let them defrost. Pry them with a knife and the meat falls right out. You can take my word because am a South Indian and we eat coconut three times a day and sometimes more. :p
Great technique
I have tried keeping in freezer ,but the coconut comes out in pieces and not a half sphere . By keeping in oven the coconut may become cooked and cannot be used in chutney or wherever fresh coconut is to be added ,i have not tried oven method but only a speculation about taste . This is only for information 🙏🙂
@@pmg48 let it thaw
The coconut will not cook, we're attempting to flash it in the oven so that it steams and can be easily removed from its shell. The shell protects it from being cooked. If you want you can also gently steam it in a bain marie so that the shell releases from the flesh of the coconut.
Tried your method but did not work. Put the two halves in the freezer for three hours, let them defrost, the flesh was still stuck like glue...I was so hoping this would have worked.
If you make two holes instead of one, so that you have an air vent, the water pours out in a quick steady stream, instead of that slow little dribble. Love that you mentioned lots of uses, it's such a multi use nut. Love from the Caribbean. 🥰🏝🇧🇿
I used the screwdriver & ham mer method, and added your tip about baking in oven @ 400° for 15 minutes.
Great stuff. Thank you!
I love this way of opening a coconut. I've been opening coconuts with hammer for years. So difficult. Thank you. Smile you look great on video.
Im from Karnataka in South India. In almost every homes, we use coconut everyday in our dishes and also as a offering to God during Pooja in temple. We just wet the coconut and smash it to the hard surface or ground, it cracks exactly in the middle , u can take the water from it. Again on hitting once more it cracks and breaks into 2 halves, then we grate it and use it.
As a person from Karnataka can attest to this
ok poomer
We also do exactly in West Bengal.
Same in the Caribbean lol...
I love it for hair and skin care also..I make my own coconut oil
I lived in Hawaii as a child. We had a coconut tree in our front yard. My dad would occasionally get a coconut from it and use a hammer & nail to open it outside. He thought it was hilarious that I stood by with a cup to catch the coconut water he would otherwise just let run out onto the ground. I thought it was one of the best parts of a fresh coconut. Glad to see I'm no longer considered an oddball for loving it. I might have to dip those big toasted flakes in some chocolate, yum! 😋
Your dad sounds like a fun guy to be around! I love this story. And that coconut and chocolate idea is genius. Try pairing the flavors of coconut and coffee one day. They marry perfectly :)
Jokes on dad here Linda, that coconut water is sold for about half a dollar /coconut in many places in Asia. It is delicious and very refreshing.
don't waste the coconut water , it is very good for your health, but those suffering from diabetes should be careful. and by the way tender coconut water is sold in Kerala, India, as a refreshing drink especially in summer times. every part of the coconut tree is useful in one way or another, the main trunk of the coconut tree can be used to make furniture , and its leaves are used to make roofs for houses, many of its parts can be burned as fuel, coconut shells can be used to create toys and coconut oil is good for health especially virgin coconut oil.
Coconut water is actually available prepackaged nowadays. Great source of hydration.
@@dennismorritt9192 "pre-packaged" coconut water? !

C'mon man coco water has been available for decades and decades everywhere.
If you make 2 holes instead of just one, I think the coconut water will flow out easier due to air pressure entering the coconut from one of the extra holes.
I love how nice and kind you are explaining each step.
Thank you!

And how many coconuts have you prepared in accordance with the instructions during the last year. And how did the taste/cost compare with shop-bought coconut flakes. Honest answer now
If you're going to process dozens of coconuts, (restaurant setting), then this would be the method to do so. Especially if you want to keep the flesh in tact as halves.
Thank you, this was so helpful. Much easier than I anticipated.
I've been opening and eating fresh coconut since I was at least 4 years old and that's a long time ago. I eat the brown rind too when I get it out of the shell. I did find the baking the open coconut in the oven of interest and help. Thank you

Génial. Une des rares vids pratiques. Et la qualité ne se discute. Merci Khalil. : )
Merci beaucoup :)
Hey good job, just found your video after buying my first coconut and wonder wth to do with it.
followed your video and was very happy. In fryer now on dehydrate for 1hr. can't wait to see the results.
This is such an elegant way to open a coconut 👏 Awesome video !! 🥥
Thank you :)
nice. i remember my dad doing this as a child, but didn't remember how it was done......i've tried bottle coconut water. it tasted nothing like i remembered.
Definitely the water straight from the coconut is superior! Just put a straw in one of those holes and enjoy :)
We could break it by keeping in the freeze and taking it out when needed and placing it in a cool place for 8 hrs, then you will see the crack appear in the coconut. This is because the flesh expands due to change in temperature.
Great technique man!
That sounds really simple! Gonna try this next!
Excellent! Thank you. (75 yrs old and still learning)
RUclips at its best! Thank you. I now feel confident enough to buy a coconut.
In the same way, but with a bit of more work, I also open one of the other two hard eyes, this making the pouring much faster and easier.
Great vid, thanks.
Yeah its definitely a bit more work. Their was some meat on the sides of the hole which slowed everything down. Each coconut is different and have to make sure that hole is clear from all obstructions :)
@@KhalilOmar Thank you for responding back. The underlying reason, however, why pouring is slow or no out flow at all on just one hole is because of the vaccum created inside the coconut as liquid comes no air goes in. If no liquid is coming out of the second hole, air always goes in, no vaccum, liquid flows out.
Ps People should not drink the water straight after it is poured out. They have to wait until they open the coconut and check that the flesh is not mouldy and taste good.
@@AlexSmith-fs6ro thanks for the comment Alex, the reason why it poured so slowly was because their was coconut meat around the hole that wasn't removed, causing it to obstruct the flow. As for the coconut water being rancid, you can simply smell it, if it smells sour and of alcohol, it has gone bad.
Opening two holes will speed up the drainage of the coconut juice.
So usually 1 hole will be soft enough to actually puncture, the other two are pretty woody.
Correct... You needed passage for Air going inside coconut. Air will replace water inside. Yes other two holes are little harder but softer than shell.
Thank you!!! I will buy coconuts more often because of this video❤️❤️
What a hack. I have just now ordered for an oven, cork borer, and a good strong knife!
I was taught a similar method.Drain the juice/water. Then heat your oven to 350 and put the coconut in the oven on a sheet tray. The whole coconut. Bake it for 10-15 minutes or until large cracks emerge. Remove the tray, use a hammer or pot to hit the nut a few times and the shell will crack and fall off. Its alot easier that it sounds. No knives necessary, so for sure its safer.
India: "Bolo Jai mata di"
*Smashes the coconut on a rock and breaks it instantly*
Leh!!
Leh, Lol
Excellent Video,
I've always Knocked out 2 Holes so the Air Goes in One and the Coconut Water Flows Freely.
Absolutely, Drinking Fresh Coconut Milk is a Mini Tropical Vacation.
Never knew About the Oven to get Meat out of Shell and love the Peeler. I Have put Coconut Meat Through My Juicer Which Expels the Pulp and Dryed it in my Oven.
Thank You
For Presentation
Chef.
Nice, I dealt with coconut my whole life (I'm Indonesian), but I truly learned something new from you tonight, thank you so much! 😄👍❤
Amazing 2 new subscribers 🙌
Glad you're apart of the channel!
Thanks for sharing explained very well
Brother thanks for a wonderful tutorial on coconut. It was just great to see .
I feel like such a dumb ass after watching this. Thanks for teaching me how to not do it like a total ape. 😂
😅glad you enjoyed
Do you know if freezing or baking will cause the coconut to lose valuable nutrients? Thanks for the video! Very informative 😊
@@CapnNapalm Literally would rather not, but thanks.
@@hcnevils Sure. Just seems like the effort would be better spent asking the same question on a platform built to give you an answer. There's a massive wealth of knowledge out there whether you want to use google, wikipedia, or a more dedicated collection of scientific journals. RUclips won't guarantee an answer, and when you get one, you never know if its even real. Thats why I specified where I found the info so you could check yourself
@@CapnNapalm I know how to search the internet. Not sure if you actually thought that anyone wouldn't know how. I asked the question for myself and others that may have been wondering while watching the video. Eventually I did my own research and found the answer. I know it seems I'm being rude but in person you don't typically say "literally just google it" to someone asking another person a question. That's rude.
You’re 100% right. I came off as a total jerk there. I was worried about the open ended question leading to more misinformation about food and nutrition, which was why I responded the way I did. but if I was trying to help, acting like that was not the way to do it. Sorry. If you would like me to change my original answer to not be so combative, please let me know
@@CapnNapalm Wow. That was really an honest and kind response. Thank you. No need to change it....I think this conversation is good example of proper social media dialogue.
Speaking of nutrition and misinformation, what are your thoughts on an animal based diet/Carnivore?
Thanks for this. I've been able to open them, but struggled to get the meat out. Thanks for this tip!
That corkscrew is brilliant! Thanks 😊
