Thank you for taking the time out of your personal vacation to produce this video for all of us. Fantastic info. Sorry but you daughter stole the show from you today, she was priceless!
it was so funny she kept coming into the garage all morning as I was packing saying not to forget this or that... then this one came out right as I started the video!
Well done! I never thought about road trips with kids where regular stops would be mandatory. That makes EV road trips so much more doable compared with the 12 straight through no stopping trips. Good pacing and length.
Amazing road trip video, Chris. Thanks for taking the time to film your experience and put together the stats. Your family is a blast to watch, and the X looks great for this trip.
It's always fun seeing a Supercharger that I've been to...my wife and I stopped at the Florence one on our way to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. 600 miles a day is my limit and if you're not pressed for time it really makes road tripping easy.
Great video! Enjoyed seeing your cute kids. Buc-cees was started here in Texas where everything is bigger. 😊 Can you imagine what it was like when he presented his business plan? We have a new one 9 miles from our house with 24 version 3 superchargers!
I have used your assigned garbage can at the Ypsi Meijer, and will be using it again soon. I always have something to throw away at chargers (and gas pumps for that matter). Thank you for your service.
I really enjoyed this! I’ve planning on renting a long range model 3 for a trip from LA to Vegas soon and this has really helped me have less range anxiety!
Wow, I just click your videos without looking at the time. I didn't even realize how long it was untill I saw a comment with a 30min timestamp after watching. That flew right by, great video!!!
Ditto. I’ve been watching your channel since way before having your kids… I really enjoyed watching this and seeing them. My little girls are in their early 20s now… But we’ve taken many road trips in the past, so this was fun for me Thx for sharing. Btw, I live in Florida, sorry it’s so busy!! This is precisely why I hope to be moving up north somewhere before too long.
Love your RUclips videos. We (my wife and I ) are almost your neighbors. We have been spends our winters in Florida for the past 10yrs. Watch your trip is has been fun. Keep up the good work. I only wish you could talk my wfe unto an EV lol
We love Buc-ee's and stopped at the one in Florence, SC on our trip to Florida from the Philly area. Your video is bringing back great memories of our recent trip in our new Model Y.
I disliked London KY for years . I was JUST there again in August 2022 for a road trip and now it's a premium spot that's cybertruck friendly! That's what's up
I've really only done two mini roadtrips in my Model 3 LR but I really enjoyed both. It's fun to see how many miles you can go in your car and how long (timewise) and I find going to new superchargers exciting. It's fun to see how long you have to charge to move on to the next one too and the time flies by and I usually overcharge because I get caught up in the rest stops with my wife and kids doing stuff (usually just the bathroom breaks eat up the time and then getting drinks and snacks means I charge longer than I need to). I love Tesla roadtripping.
Great video! Just did a 1200 mile (each way) road trip in our 2023 MY LR. Used FSD at between 80-85MPH. Almost all V3’s (peaked once at 257kW) and arrived between 6-10% at each of them. Super fun!
Ypsilanti Michigan. Wow I have not heard that name for a long time. 30+ years ago, I rented red brick house on the out skirts of the city. Cool to hear that name again.
If it makes you feel any better, for me to drive to Edmonton, Alberta its 935km and there is only 3 superchargers on the route. Two of them are 440km apart after an hour drive so I have to charge for 40 mins to get to full then drive 5 hours to near empty and charge again. Not optimal either but soon Telsa will FINALLY put in a couple more supercharging stations along the route and cut down on charging time by about 30 mins.
Been to several of the chargers you were at! The Meijer is great and the London must’ve been updated because that was a barren lot the last time I was there. Little travel center had some interesting things! Great video!
A few months ago me and my fam went from South Miami to Orlando in a 2016 Model X with AP1. It’s honestly astonishing how good such an old system is. (didn’t realize AP1 moves over when passing trucks on the highway, was a great surprise) From Miami to Orlando and back, 0 TAKEOVERS! Just incredible! I started to feel extremely tired and like I was going to fall asleep around 4am, so I stopped for a quick break. Was deciding if I should sleep for a few hours but remembered I have autopilot. After engaging autopilot, I felt like a passenger just watching the car and after a 5 hour drive barely felt tired at all. Was sold on autopilot after this. My only complaints - one of the falcon doors kept malfunctioning and hit one of my passengers on the head. Also there was a lot of road/wind noise, more any other car I’ve been in. And I’ve driven over 8 Tesla’s in the past including a 2016 Model X. Other than that, it was great!
The contrast of charging when going from watching Out Of Spec's Lucid Cannonball run to this. Charging the Tesla is a footnote, charging the Lucid cost them the Cannonball record.
Great video, pretty much the exact experience we have taking our Model 3 with our 5 year old on road trips. Gotta love getting the free charging at hotels lol
It’s crazy to think to have been subscribed when “Big Baby 1” was introduced on the channel. Nothing but health and prosperity. Have you done a total cost of both vehicles for a year. Any maintenance including cleaning. What charging would cost with your current Solar setup and without (typical home), Use your states $ per Kw/hr to get a number.? Any battery degradation since point of purchase that you’ve seen (real life what you’ve experienced)
Well thanks for sticking around so long :) I do have some videos reviewing the Y and X (Y ruclips.net/video/dcYVMnM8v8I/видео.html and X ruclips.net/video/sEsmKINb84c/видео.html) and am currently working on my Model X one year review. I do include costs in those videos to an extent. Let me know if you'd like more detailed information. Since you asked and have been around so long, I will go further into it. I actually would love to produce more of those types of videos. But they take a lot more time, and they don't get nearly as many views as FSD Beta videos, so driving videos take priority for now. But, more non-FSD videos will come over time. Thanks again for all your support over the years.
I stop at a buc ees in GA on my yearly vacation to Cherokee NC from land O’ lakes Florida and it is always my favorite supercharger stop. I love all the different food options I can have while charging we need more. One is coming to Ocala FL but still not close enough to me lol.
Had a hair raising battery management experience traveling east on I-70 to charge at Idaho Springs, CO. Car said we'd get to charger with 15% battery. But there is an 11,158 ft high pass about 35 miles west of Idaho Springs. The battery was at 12% as we went over the pass. I was a little worried. But, the downhill to Idaho Springs allowed the batter to charge back up to 15% during the last 30 miles of the leg. Whew.
Hey Chris. Hi from Ireland. I’ve been watching you for years. I love all your content. I especially love the road trips when you do them. I have to tell you the plural of fish is fish. There is no such thing as fishes. In case it comes up in conversation with one of your lovely daughters. And they start talking about sheep. Please remember the plural of sheep is sheep and not sheeps. Please please don’t hate me. Regards Séamus
Say there are 100 goldfish. You would say there are 100 goldfish. But if you have multiple species of fish, it is correct to say fishes :) And thanks for sticking around all these years.
I live in NW Ohio and have a place in SW Florida. So, I'm no stranger to this trip. I've been to all of the chargers that you've shown here, other than the Florida ones. I will say the Lima one isn't as bed as you stated here, while it is at a Hotel and there aren't many stations. There are several restaurants just across the street. You can also go into the hotel and use the restroom in there.
I know you pack a lot of stuff but have you considered getting a something like a folding lawn cart? I have one I can unfold and pack stuff from my Model Y I take on road trips. It helps me to avoid carrying a lot of stuff, especially when staying at a hotel. For the autopilot, make sure you cameras and sensors are clean and maybe consider doing a camera recalibration. I don't know that it will help or solve the issue but surly it won't hurt to try.
What is that arm for the charging cable? My cable is in the way for the guy collecting our garbage, so would be nice to be able to keep the ground clear. And how on earth can you skip the part where the pancake is done, I was waiting for the outcome, I have never seen such machine before. We should have a website for all Tesla Owners, with a rating system for every supercharger. It should include rating of food, bathrooms, if there are garbage cans, crowded, anything worth spending time on while supercharging and all sorts of useful tips.
Not a bad vehicle to road trip in! It's been a while since I tuned in and I last remember a model 3 with you showing the buildup of the dirt road coming out from underneath the plastic underbody piece. To my surprise I see you with a Model X! Very cool! How's it holding up with the local roads around here?
I wanted to setup a cleaning and care company for charging stations. Like a 3rd party cleaning service for companies that had chargers or even the DC chargers. Keep spaces clean as well. The whole 9 yards. I would like to get charging stations a bit more "outfitted" than they are now. Sounds like Michigan is ahead of me already. Haha! I also looked into designing and building my own charging company to start and get chargers. It's so obvious from the other charging companies that Tesla is 25+ years ahead on price. It's not even a comparison. One of them wanted $400k for just a single charger stall. No installation, nothing else with the hardware. Just the hardware. Tesla will own the world in 15 years. Great video! Looks like your family had a great time and Tesla made it happen!
Chris mentions that stoping to charge with 40% is "not optimal." IMO, trying to optimize charging for the car is only appropriate if you are trying to set some sort of record time and traveling without family. For a family trip like this, I perfer to optimize stops for our human needs, not the car. Just stop at superchargers when you need a break, plug the car in, and unplug when you are ready to leave. Before leaving, I do check what the car estimates the SOC to be at my next stop, but it almost always is plenty.
I noticed you had the rear view camera going. Probably because you have so much stuff in the car that you can't use your actual review mirror. Someone should just suggest to Tesla to make a camera view just for that purpose. I would imagine a long rectangular camera view up top with the map underneath would be perfect. Because that way you can still view the map. Personally it would drive me nuts to not see the map all the time it would be great to have that rear view.
Great video and editing, very enjoyable. We just came back from a 2000+ miles NJ-FL-NJ roadtrip and we love doing it too. We always do 1 stop in NC (kids are older than yours). Compared to previous years like you said, I-95 is full of 250kw superchargers these days, many stalls available and yes... Buc-ee's is insane (that's a beaver btw). We enjoy the adventure and stopping at new places when we roadtrip, even though it takes longer than flying. Looking forward to Part 2!
Compare this roadtrip vs the non Tesla road trips using electrify America. Such a massive in the end consumer experience. It was literally so easy a child could do it. Want an EV that can be road tripped, such an obvious choice at the present state of ev infrastructure.
Thank you for taking the time out of your personal vacation to share this video! Just a few questions: I have a Tesla model y 2023 and bought a subscription-based FSD; the beta option to request is not there! Just a toggle now and greyed out, saw a few things on the recalls, which may have affected it but, just wanted to ask you because you're the Tesla expert.
Your software version is probably 2023, and beta is still 2022. The cars can't go backwards, so once beta gets past your version, you'll be able to enroll! When? No one knows :S
Good insights as to the logistics involved on a long road trip (more than 2K miles) w/ a Tesla (did not know about the not in service stall message on the map, yet now the route planner is live via the phone app). Nice job training the kiddo on charging, there’s NO way that would be possible on an ICE car. Safe travels!!.
YOU BLEW IT!! I can't believe you stopped at Bus-ee's and didn't get the chopped beef or pulled pork sandwich. I have driven 70 miles out of. my way to get them. Give it a try next time.
The benefit of the Lima Ohio supercharger is that it's free :) The only one I know of that's free, the hotel pays for it all. (I'm not sure if that's still the case today but it was for years)
I thought Lima was NOT free now. But speaking of hotel chargers ("destination?") - they are great! You can charge while you sleep (like at home) and be ready to go in the morning. Not sure if you mentioned this....
Thanks so much for show how you loaded the car and where stuff went! My thought is that there must be some logic to it and I’d like to see others’ logic….I did not know about the 12V socket in the rear right side in MX. It’s not in the manual and would have taken me years to discover on my own. Name of motel w charger in Tifton? I used to spend a lot of time there 40 yrs ago and will be headed that way to Florida next year. Also, it looks like I need to add a long screwdriver to my stash in car to clean mud and dirt out of wheels. I drive a lot of dirt roads. Only had MX for 7 months and love it. Sooo smoooth! Thank you.
It was the Comfort Inn & Suites! For the screwdriver, it didn't end up being enough haha and I had to spray the tires out... that fixed it for the remainder of the trip (and then some).
We got a kick out of watching this as we have made the Fenton to Florida (Clearwater) trip (and back) several times now as snowbirds in our Model Y and know those charger stops pretty well by now. We are loving the new Buc-cees along the I-75 route, now WITH Superchargers!! Win-Win! You must try the bbq sandwiches, though. ;-) Also I enjoy their great iced tea and clean bathrooms. I also enjoyed seeing Giant Baby and (Small Baby?). 😍
The mid west were I am from has few to all most no Tesla chargers. Don't usually see a Tesla unless you are in the biggest city in every Midwest state. There is a lot of work for Tesla to do to get small rural and farming towns areas to make the Ev switch!
@@DirtyTesla Exactly. My 68YO husband says he arrives much less tired, with the Tesla (he drives most of the trip), BECAUSE of the forced stops, where we walk around. Of course, we are retired and can take our time. Our son decided against driving his Tesla MI to FL last time because of time constraints and didn't think it was that much cheaper.
I have a request that I'm really curious about with FSD. On I-40 in North Carolina near Mount Sterling there's a strip of road that gets some big turns, and traffic usually flows around 70mph (anyone going less hasn't driven it before haha) but it is a relatively dangerous strip of the highway. I would really love to see how FSD handles the area, especially with Semi's, construction zones and backups happening fairly often. Side note, this place often gets referenced as "entering the gorge"
They are building a new Bucky's next to my home. When I checked the plans submitted to the city they have spots for electric car charging. I hope to have a supercharger next to my home soon.
Your life will never be the same again. if were in your position, I would be checked in to rehab to treat my addiction to their chopped beef and pulled pork (even the turkey) sandwiches..SOOOO Good!!!! You'll see!
LOL I'm so sorry I actually did have video of the finished pancake but deleted it to make the video slightly shorter haha. I figured everyone knows what a pancake looks like but I see I've made a mistake in editing 🤣 🤣
I test drove 2 different 2023 Model X's today and noticed front suspension issues on both. Vibration and shaking coming from the steering wheel, and some noises from the front end. Seems odd for 2 "new" vehicles to have the same suspension issue. Have you experienced this?
I noticed what looked like Enhanced Auto Pilot in this video. Did you recently add that to your X? At $6k, do you think it's worth it? I have a Y with standard autopilot only, and honestly am considering EAP for the lane change feature alone. Having to re-engage autopilot after every lane change on the highway is probably my biggest (and only) gripe about my Y. Thanks for the great videos!
We subscribed to FSD for one month to use it for this road trip. The goal was to have FSD Beta, but it was not available to our X in time (and still isn't actually...). The features included even of EAP are very nice. I'm not sure it's *exactly* worth $200, but we enjoyed having it for thousands of miles and used it 95%+ of the time!
Was this trip on the Interstate highway system for the most part? We travel to Orlando from northern Minnesota at least once a year for the resorts. We normally travel 1100 miles on day one. That stop is usually only the 4th stop of the day going roughly 350 - 400 miles between stops. And maybe 6 stops total to get to our resort. How much should I expect that to change on a roughly 26 hour drive time to Orlando when we get our Tesla?
Check out the website A Better Route Planner and put in the Tesla you want to get. It's a bit conservative, but it's accurate enough. For this trip, the most we would get if we really pushed it was ~300 miles in between charges.
Part 2 is finally here! ruclips.net/video/hZvgEKTxvo4/видео.html

Haha, FL spring break madness.
That's a great idea for a business!
Partially to see, but partially for the video :) I love your idea tho!
I'm so relieved you didn't forget to put your daughter in the car
Great video and editing, very enjoyable. We just came back from a 2000+ miles NJ-FL-NJ roadtrip and we love doing it too. We always do 1 stop in NC (kids are older than yours). Compared to previous years like you said, I-95 is full of 250kw superchargers these days, many stalls available and yes... Buc-ee's is insane (that's a beaver btw). We enjoy the adventure and stopping at new places when we roadtrip, even though it takes longer than flying. Looking forward to Part 2!
That's great! And yes, stopping at these places is kinda cool. We wouldn't have seen them otherwise!
@@DirtyTesla Thank you for the response!
appreciate the honesty about the frequent service at the beginning. Would appreciate knowing what the service issues were? thanks
Here is detail on that: ruclips.net/video/sEsmKINb84c/видео.html
Good insights as to the logistics involved on a long road trip (more than 2K miles) w/ a Tesla (did not know about the not in service stall message on the map, yet now the route planner is live via the phone app). Nice job training the kiddo on charging, there’s NO way that would be possible on an ICE car. Safe travels!!.
YOU BLEW IT!! I can't believe you stopped at Bus-ee's and didn't get the chopped beef or pulled pork sandwich. I have driven 70 miles out of. my way to get them. Give it a try next time.
In part 1 we got food and it was very good :)
Oh sorry lol didn't realize I was commenting on part 1 :P Part 2 is up: ruclips.net/video/hZvgEKTxvo4/видео.html
The benefit of the Lima Ohio supercharger is that it's free :)
The only one I know of that's free, the hotel pays for it all. (I'm not sure if that's still the case today but it was for years)
Yeah I'm pretty sure it's still free!
@@DirtyTesla man, you've been responding to me on Twitter and RUclips im humbled lol 😃
I thought Lima was NOT free now. But speaking of hotel chargers ("destination?") - they are great! You can charge while you sleep (like at home) and be ready to go in the morning. Not sure if you mentioned this....
I’ve done this from Warren to Naples in a sr+. I75 has a good amount of super chargers and the one in Lima is the best ;)
It’s nice to get out of Michigan and into states that have many more v3 superchargers.
FYI Reason why Lima is the best is it’s free :)
I just got back from a 1300 mile road trip to FL in my Model S. I stopped at a Bucees also. 🤣
Ah… you stopped in Knoxville, that’s where I live! 😂
There is a Bus-ees in Texas with 48 Tesla stalls
We got a kick out of watching this as we have made the Fenton to Florida (Clearwater) trip (and back) several times now as snowbirds in our Model Y and know those charger stops pretty well by now. We are loving the new Buc-cees along the I-75 route, now WITH Superchargers!! Win-Win! You must try the bbq sandwiches, though. ;-) Also I enjoy their great iced tea and clean bathrooms. I also enjoyed seeing Giant Baby and (Small Baby?). 😍
Yes small (or smol) baby... she was very small when she was young, but she's caught up and is at the top of the charts for her age lol
The mid west were I am from has few to all most no Tesla chargers. Don't usually see a Tesla unless you are in the biggest city in every Midwest state. There is a lot of work for Tesla to do to get small rural and farming towns areas to make the Ev switch!
Your daughter is so cute!
In addition,
Please pay attention to your physical condition when driving long distances.
Thank you. That's another reason superchargers are pretty nice. You get a chance to walk around and refresh
Have you thought about taking I75 most of the way?
It is only 23 minutes longer to frive
They are building a new Bucky's next to my home. When I checked the plans submitted to the city they have spots for electric car charging. I hope to have a supercharger next to my home soon.
Your life will never be the same again. if were in your position, I would be checked in to rehab to treat my addiction to their chopped beef and pulled pork (even the turkey) sandwiches..SOOOO Good!!!! You'll see!
Bucee is a beaver😀
16:44 what!!!! Wanted to see the finished pancake!!!
LOL I'm so sorry I actually did have video of the finished pancake but deleted it to make the video slightly shorter haha. I figured everyone knows what a pancake looks like but I see I've made a mistake in editing 🤣 🤣
Here you go lol ruclips.net/video/JDVV-67Ll3s/видео.html
Awesome 👍👍👍
The Lima Supercharger was free up until recently! It was the only free Supercharger I’ve ever seen.
It's not free anymore??
@@DirtyTesla Apparently no longer free as of last July 😫
TIL people are still wearing cold weather clothes
- Florida man
dude cheese and yoghurts and stuff... screw that road trip, I'd be eating all day
36:00 "SuperCHarger"
[hehe] Howdy to your beautiful lil girls! ...and [HUGZ] for them!
Howdy to Steph! Great video! I'd love to see the trip home!
It's coming!
I test drove 2 different 2023 Model X's today and noticed front suspension issues on both. Vibration and shaking coming from the steering wheel, and some noises from the front end. Seems odd for 2 "new" vehicles to have the same suspension issue. Have you experienced this?
Great trip! I have one question. According to the charging data in the video, Full Model X Battery is only 88kwh. Should it be 95~100? What happened?
They did shrink the battery a bit from 100kWh on the refresh, and some is held in reserve.
Nice
Sorry but I’m mad that you didn’t show us how the pancakes came out. Were they good?
Great video! But I cringed when you called the WHEELS* tires. 😅
🤣 Yeah I do that sometimes
@@DirtyTesla ….. thank you. At least it will give me an idea as we shop around.
Great video, you went to the city right next to mine (Port St Lucie) Enjoy your time down here, lots of EVs here
Love the video. I'm curious on the wh/mile. Do you have that stat by chance?
We traveled 1,336 miles and used 395.6kWh so ~296Wh/mile
Wait, why aren’t you using FSD?
He doesn’t have it on model X only on model y
@@janja3268 right, forgot
He explained it a few times... Mainly because of incompatible software versions..
Isn't that the same buc ees the guys from jet lag the game went to for the challenge?
You missed stating the most important stat of Wh/mile.
We traveled 1,336 miles and used 395.6kWh so ~296Wh/mile
Just curious what was the “steering issue” light or warning that came on please just curious if it was anything or it went away , thank you
🤷♂️ Went away. We've seen it a few times now and just ignore it 🤣
