Spouse and I will be taking a 3900 mile road trip late September in our Tesla driving from Chicago to Vermont (fall colors), back to Chicago, and on to Arizona. We will be taking our time and camping the whole way. The packing is a bit more challenging with two people, but the Model Y has an amazing amount of cargo capacity. We like to stay at state parks along the way sleeping in the car and charging from a 50A electric post when possible. Our setup includes a Luno air mattress, TesCamp window blinds, and a Crown Shades popup canopy which we set up at our campsite for protection from sun and rain. We buy our food and drinks along the way cooking our evening meal outdoors in camp weather permitting. We stay at the campsite for a day (two nights) or more, then drive a full day covering about 500 miles to the next campsite. The car provides late evening entertainment (e.g. Netflix, RUclips), and Tesla's Camp Mode keeps the perfect interior temperature all night for sleeping. Navigate on Autopilot, along with a couple 30 minute charging stops, makes driving a 500 mile day a snap. It's a fun and economical way to travel.
My wife and a I are both 75. We got our Y in February. We have 13000 miles on it. Our first three trips were 2000, 2000 and 3000 miles. We live in Boulder and travel to Vermont a couple of times a year. The trip to Vt and on to North Carolina this spring was 5000 miles. We are going to Vermont at the end of September. We stay in motels. We have had no problems charging. It’s fun driving our YLD.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy As a current ICE driver, the concept of not filling to 100% every time is confusing. Can you shed some light on that? Hoping to join the Tesla community in November. 👍🏻
@@73av8r5 The idea is simple: you only need to charge enough to reach the next charging destination. If you are going from place A to place B, and the computer says to reach B you should leave A with 60% state of charge, then there is no reason to charge past 60%. Don't worry, there is a margin included so that you don't arrive at B with zero percent battery. Additionally, the time it takes to charge is not linear. When the battery state of charge is low, charging is very fast. As the battery gets more "full", the rate of charging slows. Justin, I have to say, this was the most practical real world Tesla video I’ve watched… and I’ve watched dozens since ordering my MYLR (which I pick up in 3 days) I watched the whole thing and learned a lot of things despite all of the other videos I’ve seen for others. Some items included map calculation nuances, how much charge camping mode takes per hour, how to handle it when you get to a low output charger etc. While subtle, these tips add up. This is my favorite vid so far related to a Tesla. I am planning a 900+ road trip in a few months and this has been really beneficial. One tip for you: … next time pack a night mask so even if one of the windows is leaking light, you’ll never notice. I am curious what your perfect goal is for charge left upon arriving at a destination. I am guessing 10 to 15%?
You’ve made me want to drive my model 3 from England to southern Spain to my little villa… thanks a lot! 😂😂😂 it’s only 1400 miles each way for me though haha

@@radicalradzik I have the 1 piece and the 3 piece is new. The 1 piece will be harder to install, but will not have lines to line up. The 3 piece will be easier to install, require less stretching, but will also require lining up edges on the various pieces.

Late to the party... but, recently (Sun, 8-21 @10pm to Mon, 8-22 @10pm) did a 24hr trip from Bel Air, MD to the REI in Columbia, SC to pick up a INNO Wedge Plus 865 Rooftop Cargo Box in my '21 MYP. 1,118 miles in total. My 1st ever experience w/ Buc-ees (in Florence, SC) was an AWESOME rest/ charging stop on the 95 corridor. Enjoy your content🤙
I think one issue some people may have driving long distances is having to stop every 100 or so miles to charge for 15-45 mins whereas in an ICE car, you can drive longer and have shorter stops.
Looking at this video, very informative about that EV experience, but stopping at every 100 miles can get old in hurry. 200 miles seems to be the sweet spot for me.
Wow! You got to charge at Buc-ees! The ones I’ve been to don’t have chargers (yet), but it is the most natural location ever. I will stop there almost every time.
Funny story. We have stayed at that Holiday Inn in Willcox, AZ twice. That's some of the darkest areas in the lower 48. It's a great place to do Astrophotography. I love Tucson also! Amazing place.
Thanks for taking the Southern route. I live in midwest and during the winter months I use the I44/I40 corridor with my ICE vehicle. I'v been waiting for someone to do a long trip in a Telsa. I consider a a long trip to begin at 5,700 miles which I have done many times. I am watching this to see how you do crossing the Mojave. The last time I made this trip Mojave ICE stations were down due to a power outage and I had to pay $7 USD/gallon for gas.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Flat tires, minor accidents and bad drivers are a common site on a 5,700 mi road trip so I am glad you included that in your video. Just so you know with the exception of AZ. I find it easier to drive the Interstate highways rather than diverting to state roads. Reason, many ICE fuel stations are disappearing and I waste time trying to find open ICE fuel stations as many have closed.
Great video! That was quite a trip damn... you are way nicer than I am, I would have chased that honda until I ran out of battery lol I never considered electric cars, never even looked at them, thought they were pimped out golf carts, a complete waste of money and time. Last weekend we drove to the city to shop for a new car for my wife, we drove past a tesla showroom, my wife really wanted to test drive the go carts, I didnt want to but figured meh it'll make her happy, she'll hate it and we'll never talk about it anymore... well I discovered a whole new level of customer service, I found out why there is almost a cult surrounding tesla, we fell in love with those cars so badly that we drove back out of the showroom with one the same day... even the kids fell in love, and they're used to the space/ comfort of minivans. I cant believe I waited that long to get into one, I cant wait to have some free time so that we can take the tesla on a long trip, those things are so fun to drive, the planning and navigation to chargers etc. makes it feel almost like planning a flight. I've always considered driving to be a waste of time, so we'd always try to take the plane instead of driving, especially on vacation, now it feels like driving somewhere will be a fun part of the trip, your video got me even more pumped! minus the crazy drivers out there...
In my experience driving a bit slow at 75 mph enables each charger lasts 3 hours of driving for about 200 miles. That will eliminate one stop for every 600 miles. With auto pilot 3 hours of non stop driving is about right.
Yea, there are some good strategies for balancing speed vs charging. It equals out in this situation because its 7.5 hrs to drive 600 miles at 80 mph, and 8 hrs to drive 600 miles at 75 mph. That extra charging stop is about 25 minutes, so about the same.
Awesome trip. Seems like the Hondas followed you to the garage. Glad you got it all sorted though with the wheel. You were my inspiration to upgrade to the model 3 rwd. I hope to have exciting road trips as well. My mini can’t keep up with road tripping. It was a great training car to learn more about evs.
When we in the UK we pick up a pebble on beach of the nothing sea and and take it across the UK to through it into Irish sea. Also people have started driving from John o groats to lands end and timing themselves whilst charging I think as proof usually doing the trip in one day.
Great ride coast to coast! Thanks, BTG. Just FYI and not to be disrespectful, the towns you mentioned are pronounced: Cabazon = ka-ba-ZONE and San Luis Obispo = san-loois-o-BIS-po. Also glad to see you are headed to Pismo Beach (PIZ-mo), it's a nice little beach town - growing leaps and bounds but still lots of local atmosphere. Cheers and drive safely.
Nice work Justin, enjoyed the whole trip , Feel bad 0:02 for the Honda mess. I hope honda insurance covered your damage. I am Not a Tesla owner yet but thinking about jt, I work from home so I hardly drive 10-30 miles a week lol, I was about to buy Y but hold off till January as I extended my lease for few months as there is lot happening g with Tesla and Y, HW4 l, new HL and may be a new battery, APR might come down, so I think I took a right decision to hold off but hooked watching Tesla video, specially yours, shock to see you do not get mileage what you should at 80% battery but I get it it depends On speed, elevation.
Great video! When you are done charging, how do you pull up that list of all the upcoming Superchargers? Thanks for all your awesome, informative videos !!
if you press the top left ribbon that shows your next turn, it will expand the upcoming turns and chargers. Tap it again to go back to the zoomed in version.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I see and if I click on a different Supercharger, instead of what the Nav wants you to go to, will it put that in your route and just recalculate your trip from there?

@@BeardedTeslaGuy I’m no expert myself, but there’s some amazing bbq places in Texas. Blacks in lockhart, blackboard bbq in sisterdale, Cruz in maypearl, coopers in llano… just to name a few. Rudy’s honestly is pretty good in my opinion, but any of the above would put Rudy back on the sidelines.
Thanks for the information. I'm still trying to figure out if more and frequent super charging stops is overall faster than going a little slower but extending the distance between super charging stops, seems illogical to have to stop after only 80-90 miles. If I keep it around 65-70 mph I can get consumption around 250w per mile, I don't have free supercharger miles so try to reduce consumption. On a recent 1,300 mile trip from MI to FL had only 6 SC stops and stayed overnight at motels with Tesla destination chargers. It was a very doable and easy trip.
@@Superman-xr1oh because you take advantage of the charging curve. By stopping more often with a lower battery you get peak charging rate and you unplug once that peak goes down and off to the next charger.

@@XDBREEEZY I have my RED Model 3 (RWD) on order since June. My est. Delivery is Sept 12th! I'm so excited. Question.. I was wondering how 'quick' the RWD is?? I know its not a PERFORMANCE but does it have a nice SPEED to it?? Glad you enjoy your new Car!
@@SanDiegoTeslaGuy Have you driven one? I guarantee you it’s quicker than anything else you’ve driven. And silent too. 🙏🏻
You've been crushing it....Keep It Coming!!! Tryna grow like The Beard Man!!!!!
Appreciate you
Well done! Enjoyed your video!
Cheers
That's a trip we would too bro! And ya, EVs are here to stay. We ride EUCs already! Careful on your drives. Driving a Tesla helps for sure!!!
Cheers
I have the same fridge, its the perfect size and the electric scooter is super useful for getting around town.
Cheers
so peaceful to watch 😀
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video! Glad you made it with only 1 moderate concern.
Seriously. Otherwise it was uneventful. Freaking Honda
I am guessing 10 to 15%?
glad you enjoyed it! I usually like to arrive closer to 5%, anything else is just charging too long in an ideal world
Just got my Y. Great video, makes me want to take a road trip. I also have a Onewheel pint on order for longer charging sessions.
Nothing better than a Tesla road trip!
Dude I live in orlando also. And the thought of getting on 528 to head in the opposite direction of my route is insane. That’s commitment. 😂😂😂😂
Haha, I had to do it though!
Sorry this is my 6 year old son making comments. He loves your channel and is obsessed with Tesla. Lol.
Well I appreciate him! Reach out to me on Twitter or IG, I’d like to send him something in the mail
Your best video yet. We'll done!
Glad you think so!
Hahaha all those Pringles!!! I’d have them all eaten in the first 24 hours 😂
Lol
Crazy!!! I think I was behind you in the Mobile, Alabama tunnel. BTW, D'Iberville, is pronounced "Dee-aber-ville" :)
Haha if you saw the Florida plates, it was me!
You’ve made me want to drive my model 3 from England to southern Spain to my little villa… thanks a lot! 😂😂😂 it’s only 1400 miles each way for me though haha
Do it!
Epic trip....can't wait for Part 2
Appreciate you
Congrats on the amazing trip! Glad you’re safe and that the ppf turned an incident into lower cost fix. And then…. The Honda. Hope the repair goes well.
Cheers
@@BeardedTeslaGuy question for ya - looking into doing drive protected ppf myself. Would you recommend the one piece bumper option or multiple piece bumper option? What are the pros and cons of these options? (Model Y EDD is getting closer - pulled in from Sept - Oct 23rd to Sept to Oct 15th. 😀)
@@radicalradzik I have the 1 piece and the 3 piece is new. The 1 piece will be harder to install, but will not have lines to line up. The 3 piece will be easier to install, require less stretching, but will also require lining up edges on the various pieces.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Thank you! I'm digging Eric's install videos. Lots of great tips and wisdom. So jazzed that we'll likely have our first Tesla - 2022 Model Y in 6-8 weeks.
Congrats on the Coast to Coast. Really sorry about the fender bender. It would be cool to have a gather of Tesla owners doing some thing like that annually. Gather & Go convention. Tesla Trek.
Would be cool for sure
Late to the party... but, recently (Sun, 8-21 @10pm to Mon, 8-22 @10pm) did a 24hr trip from Bel Air, MD to the REI in Columbia, SC to pick up a INNO Wedge Plus 865 Rooftop Cargo Box in my '21 MYP. 1,118 miles in total.
My 1st ever experience w/ Buc-ees (in Florence, SC) was an AWESOME rest/ charging stop on the 95 corridor. Enjoy your content🤙
Sounds like your living the right Tesla life!
I think one issue some people may have driving long distances is having to stop every 100 or so miles to charge for 15-45 mins whereas in an ICE car, you can drive longer and have shorter stops.
That’s the mental hurdle for sure. For me, I like the breaks but some people claim to be able to drive 1,000 miles and only stop once
@@BeardedTeslaGuy We are planning to drive from Fresno CA to New Mexico and Texas with our model Y. A family of 5. We will want the stops!
Yea it’s a cool place
It's pronounced uh-latch-oo-wa. It's an old Indian word that means sinkhole. Cool video! Getting my model Y next week and I'm super excited.
Yea, if you have never heard people say the name of some of these locations, it is really hard to guess pronunciation. It was an amazing trip though!
Funny story. We have stayed at that Holiday Inn in Willcox, AZ twice. That's some of the darkest areas in the lower 48. It's a great place to do Astrophotography. I love Tucson also! Amazing place.
That’s a good tip! I did some night photography on my way through and it turned out pretty decent
Wow doesn’t do it. An amazing video. Love your disposition and how you seem to take things in stride. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ouch, that’s steep gas prices
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Flat tires, minor accidents and bad drivers are a common site on a 5,700 mi road trip so I am glad you included that in your video. Just so you know with the exception of AZ. I find it easier to drive the Interstate highways rather than diverting to state roads. Reason, many ICE fuel stations are disappearing and I waste time trying to find open ICE fuel stations as many have closed.
Really enjoyed watching the trip. Hopefully I can make the same trip next year.
You’ll love it!
Thanks for the excellent road trip...
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video! I've always considered driving to be a waste of time, so we'd always try to take the plane instead of driving, especially on vacation, now it feels like driving somewhere will be a fun part of the trip, your video got me even more pumped! minus the crazy drivers out there...
loved the video, Justin!
So glad to hear it
This is fantastic man!I’ve always wanted to do sth like this. I live in Boston, would like to drive to cali one day.
You’ve gotta do it
So funny you felt the urge to go to the coast before setting off properly. Shame about the windshield cover, thank goodness for Target and PPF.
Indeed. But it all worked out in the end
What a fun video! Thanks for documenting. Sorry about that Honda (my non tesla vehicles are Hondas, but haven't done anything like that).
Lol
In my experience driving a bit slow at 75 mph enables each charger lasts 3 hours of driving for about 200 miles. That will eliminate one stop for every 600 miles. With auto pilot 3 hours of non stop driving is about right.
Yea, there are some good strategies for balancing speed vs charging. It equals out in this situation because its 7.5 hrs to drive 600 miles at 80 mph, and 8 hrs to drive 600 miles at 75 mph. That extra charging stop is about 25 minutes, so about the same.
Awesome video!!!💯💪🏾 I own a model y.I will be doing a video also from Florida to Pittsburgh.
Cheers
Sorry to see you experienced Phoenix drivers. You're welcome for the wheel... thats my service center.
The saved me
Awesome trip. Seems like the Hondas followed you to the garage. Glad you got it all sorted though with the wheel. You were my inspiration to upgrade to the model 3 rwd. I hope to have exciting road trips as well. My mini can’t keep up with road tripping. It was a great training car to learn more about evs.
These cars have changed my life
When we in the UK we pick up a pebble on beach of the nothing sea and and take it across the UK to through it into Irish sea. Also people have started driving from John o groats to lands end and timing themselves whilst charging I think as proof usually doing the trip in one day.
that sounds like fun to me!
Cheers
I believe the one is pronounced, ka-ba-zon.......no long "O" sound.
Awesome video! You're not quite a Floridian yet. Alachua is uh-LATCH-ooh-AH
Haha I can’t pronounce them all just yet
Well done. Nice tips and details on going on a long trip. V3s are quite a bit better than V2s.
V3 makes all the difference
I also was planning on getting an eScooter when I eventually get my Tesla to ride when charging! LOL
It just works lol
Every non EV person needs to see this. So tired of the FUD out there
So much you can do in an EV
Nice work Justin, enjoyed the whole trip

Feel bad 0:02 for the Honda mess. I hope honda insurance covered your damage. I am
Not a Tesla owner yet but thinking about jt, I work from home so I hardly drive 10-30 miles a week lol, I was about to buy Y but hold off till January as I extended my lease for few months as there is lot happening g with Tesla and Y, HW4 l, new HL and may be a new battery, APR might come down, so I think I took a right decision to hold off but hooked watching Tesla video, specially yours, shock to see you do not get mileage what you should at 80% battery but I get it it depends
On speed, elevation.
The covered the repairs, not the diminished value though
Great video! When you are done charging, how do you pull up that list of all the upcoming Superchargers? Thanks for all your awesome, informative videos !!
if you press the top left ribbon that shows your next turn, it will expand the upcoming turns and chargers. Tap it again to go back to the zoomed in version.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy
I see and if I click on a different Supercharger, instead of what the Nav wants you to go to, will it put that in your route and just recalculate your trip from there?
@@antneed15 You can select to add it to your route after clicking on it and it will recalculate your full trip with that supercharger in there.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy perfect! Thank you! Keep up the amazing videos!
Awesome trip! We did a Colorado Springs to Orlando stopping in San Antonio so a lot of these stops were the same.
Yea it’s pretty desolate out there so you don’t have a choice in some areas lol
I can see a future with v2 chargers aimed at campers. Perhaps breakfast and coffee in the morning!
Agreed. The city chargers (72 kW) are so underrated
Great video!
btw, Cabazon = Kah-Bah-Zone, emphasis on the Zone. Spanish for big head.
Edit: 1:08:10 I thought for sure the Honda was back to get you again! LOL
Haha yea I have never heard of that place before lol
You had to say...."it was a RETROACTIVE Honda!"
Hahahahaha. Have I gotten the message across on rebates not being retroactive yet?
@@BeardedTeslaGuy lol BESIDES REBATES, HONDAS CAN BE TREATED THE SAME IF THEY ARE YOUR WORST ENEMY
Very interesting, thanks
Very welcome
How is it that I've already watched 5 of so of your travel videos?! Very engaging. Can't wait for my Long Range Y to arrive next month (but who knows? 7 delivery date changes already! Grr)
Its cocaine for Tesla reservation holders ha.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy It really is lol. That's all I do all day long is watch Tesla videos. I guess I'll have to join the club of content providers once I get my car :-)
A OneWheel fits in the fronk of the Y and is a much more fun "goof off/travel around" vehicle for supercharging stops.
I have considered, but the wife cant use it so we went with the scooter.
Would have love to see this trip with the Rivian you rented….that would have been epic! 🤙
Some day I will have to do a Rivian road trip for sure. Will be interesting to see how the really long range couples with the less than ideal EA charging network.
Rudy’s bbq… you haven’t even scratched the surface of good Texas BBQ 50:47
I need to be taught! Always up for a BBQ lesson!
I look forward to hitting the road in our Tesla one day!
Wawa started out as a convenience store without the gas station. They than added on the gas part. I’m in NJ and have Wawa all over.
Yea and it’s great!
Nice video great content. Next time should take picture of front bumper see how many bugs you hit for a journey of that distance
Haha it’s mass genocide on the front bumper
Thanks for the information. I'm still trying to figure out if more and frequent super charging stops is overall faster than going a little slower but extending the distance between super charging stops, seems illogical to have to stop after only 80-90 miles. If I keep it around 65-70 mph I can get consumption around 250w per mile, I don't have free supercharger miles so try to reduce consumption.
On a recent 1,300 mile trip from MI to FL had only 6 SC stops and stayed overnight at motels with Tesla destination chargers. It was a very doable and easy trip.
Stopping more frequently for shorter charge is faster way to travel
@@BeardedTeslaGuy How is stopping more frequently faster? Isn't it taking twice as long to get to your destination?
@@Superman-xr1oh because you take advantage of the charging curve. By stopping more often with a lower battery you get peak charging rate and you unplug once that peak goes down and off to the next charger.
@@desolater010 Thanks!
Mad respect for this guy, who drove 85 miles to the opposite direction just to prove the reliability of EVs.
Had to do it! Coast to coast baby!
Great vid please do more like these
Also if you had a gas car you would save like 48 hours
Haha I think charging was about 8 hours total for this if I remember correctly
