I love this comparison test for families. First time it feels like it's about all car things. EV´s are not an experiment anymore - they "normal" cars and are being tested as such. Great.
Kyle and team. I know this probably won’t get the views of some cool drag video, or off-road, or range text. But as an enthusiast with two kids in car seats I really appreciate yall did this video.
Taking out the seat was a Dad 🐐 move❤
Hope the safety/airbags is all good
Finally an Out-Of-Spec episode that doesn’t only focus primarily at how “spicy” the vehicle is or how a 3rd row is “ideal” for dogs.
I’m 72 years old and have two grown sons and one grandson. I found this demonstration VERY informative and useful for general knowledge. Thanks Nick for all of the child seat work!
Electric van would do it. I owned both a Suburban and a Honda Minivan. The Minivan was far more practical for hauling people and their stuff. Suburban was superior for extreme loads and towing.
I had both too, we went with a midroof 12 passenger transit van and it was like when going from a subcompact to a minivan. Amazing!
When our Pacifica hybrid was in ev only mode(which was most of the time) it was great. I wish it was just the same van with a tesla powertrain and it would have been perfect. We had the pinnacle version and all the features were fantastic and it rode great. Just sucked it was only 35 miles when you were going on a longer trip.
VW ID Buzz is coming soon :)
@@ShiftheadsI loved my Pacifica hybrid! Replaced it w a R1T but miss the 3rd! I have a r1s as a loaner for a month and it’s no comparison to the minivan. W a tall husband and teenagers w friends, there’s really not enough legroom. And getting out of the 3rd without captain chairs is a hassle.
The perfect vehicle w be an ev minivan with at least 300mi of range and fast charging for road trips.
@@Dillingham-I was excited for the buzz. But w the expected high price and low range, not sure it’ll be much of a road tripper.
Cargo Comparison
All Rows Occupied
Kia: 22
Rivian: 27
Tesla: 27

Kia: 45
Rivian: 47
Tesla: 40
Middle and Back Flat
Kia: 84
Rivian: 115
Tesla: 88
These are in cubic feet. They include the space of the frunk.
I left out Mercedes because it wasn’t a contender for me and realistically isn’t for most families.
Thank you for this. If you just watched this video you'd think the EV9 was twice as large inside. Rivian owner was trying his hardest to sell the EV9... Err... Captains chairs
I love how Kyle is like "its really hot out here" yet he still wears a hoodie :)
As a potential 1st timer to purchase a family EV.... And looking at all these options... I gravitate towards the Tesla Model X. Yes. Tesla for me.
Tesla if you really want FSD and don't need the space that badly. If you do need the space, Rivian 100%
Love our X plaid - falcon wing doors are great with kids. If you have the 6 seat version, middle 2 seats are powered (but can’t collapse) so you can still move the middle rows for ingress and egress from the 3rd row even if you have front facing car seats in either the middle row seats.
EV9 utility mode, car can be locked by rolling down drivers window. Hitting lock and window button from outside the car.
You don't need a suburban with big family, you need minivan. It's gonna be lighter, has more space -> more efficient
Thought it was race to Vegas pt. 2 😢
Wrong channel haha
@@KyleConner Haha true clicked so fast I had no time to check lol, looking forward to it 🤘
Thanks for the great content!
Will be released Saturday.
@@KyleConner This race is great concept! Come to Europe with your team and race the: Renault 5, Citroen C3, Hyundai Inster, Mini and Fiat 500e.
But do part of the route off highway (trough cities)?
Man the cargo capacity of the Rivian is really the game changer for me. Yeah the seating maybe slightly larger in the EV9 but the cargo capacity there's no comparison between the 2.
Right? They were working so hard to sell the EV9 but the Rivian seemed huge compared with the rest.
I had a Mom and 2 kids (w/ baby + child seats) in the 2nd row of my R1S today... no issues at all. I'd argue the R1S has better overall people space and cargo space than the EV9 w/ captains chairs.
Of course it does, but this owner seemed to care about one issue only, and it was captains chairs
Great video! I would imagine these car companies could gain some valuable user feedback from this. Great job on that camera too Coleton!
Surprisingly, the shortest one is the EV9 197"
Model X 198"
R1S 201"
EQS SUV 202"
However, with EQS SUV rear steering, that might be the most nimble in parking lots.
That is surprising, the Telluride is the same in its segment as well, the packaging for interior volume and leg room though is just next level.
Videos like this with real people talking through and testing real use cases are very useful. Great content.
Someone really needs to make an actual minivan ev.
Nice review, thanks for doing it, very helpful!
Love these kind of comparisons!
The EV9 is by far the lowest cost of all the EVs that you reviewed today. How you dont include that in your final analysis is nuts
Depends on the trim, the upper trim EV9 is more than the Rivian after tax credit.
@@Cttechexpressnot true as the ev9 is already getting manufacturer discount equal to the tax credit. Also EV9 is now being made in the USA and is qualifying for the tax credit.
Only two of these cars can roadtrip on a holiday due to ccs having poor chargers.
@@wasabi521 It's possible to roadtrip on CCS chargers. I have done it. Maybe it's not as smooth, but you can't say it's impossible.
I hit the like button immediately, been waiting for this comparison
I really appreciate this review. Car seats should have about two inches between the car seat and the seat in front of it. This allows for movement of the front seat during a crash and wont hit the car seat. Anyone over 6 foot would not be able to sit comfortably with a rear facing car seat behind them in these vehicles and they are largest EVs out there. I am super excited for electric minivans to come to the US. Hopefully they will have more room.
It can actually vary based on manufacturer. Always refer to your car seat manufacturer installation instructions for the most accurate information.
Its great to see the evolution of this channel. I would love to also see some commuter tests. Since I would think most people use their car to commute back and forth to work, just how long certain cars would last before needing to charge.
These reviews very much needed. I know it would be a tight squeeze for me to in the r1s but I’m going for it. Lol
Man, we have the revolve slim car seat in our Mach E and the passenger seat it sits behind is basically not usable 😂 Super relevant video for us with a rear facing toddler, EV9 looking very good for the money. Thank you for filming this, I legitimately care more about how the car seat fits than most other stats these days 😅
I checked a Kia EV 9 with my wife today (with 6 seats). It is a big car with a lot of space for familys. Perhaps a little bit to wide for our Garage. In europe older garages have an relativ narrow "door". In the EV 6 and perhaps also in the EV 9 you can activate the clima with your App on the mobile if you are outside the car. But a Petmode in the car would be nice and easier. I like this test. When our kids were young, we went to holyday with 5 kids. The Citroën C8 was the best car we had in this time, because of the space.
What also should be considered is does the SUV have a hitch for cargo hitch carriers and the ability to have cross bars for car top carriers. Those 2 can give you extra storage.
I've been waiting for a car seat test! Thanks for the in-depth review.
Cool test and I generally agree with the results, but would also say I went with an R1S because of the cargo capacity with all seats in place. The small amount of extra room with rear facing car seats aren’t needed for very long and I prefer the upright seating positions in the R1S. Then you get just an enormous amount of cargo capacity on top of that. I get not all families are looking to road trip with the whole family plus all their stuff, but we do and we love it. Especially putting all our dirty or sandy stuff in the frunk, such as all our beach chairs and canopy etc when we hit the beach in San Diego.
Been waiting for this video. Great to see the family perspective
R1S new software made a HUGE improvement to the ride quality.
Great video Kyle! The topic was real life family issues in EVs. Nice! Nice cameo wave by Alysa! :)
Thank you for this video. As a dad this is very helpful. I’m also 6’5” and I struggle to fit in front of my child’s seat in almost every vehicle except for trucks. Thankfully though I only have one kid so most of this doesn’t matter too much. But it’s very helpful.
It would have been nice to see the EV9 frunk space. From my point of view, when discussing space, that's where it struggles. Toss a stroller in the back, and then it's storage is limited. With the R1S you can still put a decent amount of luggage in the frunk.
Love this video, really helpful for long father of 2 kids ❤
Our Model Y struggles with AC distribution to rear-facing car seats. We had to get sun shades because our kid was roasting and we’d pick her up sweaty even with cold on full blast.
value on the ev9 is crazy good too. i wouldn't mind seeing something like this for mid size suv's
Really appreciate the real world use case for parents and car seats. That was the primary reason we got the X was b/c of the doors and ease of ingress and egress even though we already had a 7 seater Y. Ended up getting a X Plaid since we wanted the 6 seat configuration and price delta was that much back in September.
EV 9 is the easy choice for me if I needed a 3 row suv. I like it better and is way cheaper. I’m seeing good deals out there.
It's really hot out and Kyle is wearing a hoodie and long pants. 😂
Same when it's freezing.
It was almost 100 out! Crazy guy
yes, only in america
No wonder he claims 68° is too warm at the end of the R1S segment!
When installing a car seat or seat base it's much easier if you use one hand to push the seat down into the cushion while pulling the strap to tighten the car seat.
Love our X plaid with 6 seats. Makes getting the kiddo in and out so much easier and 2 ways to get to the 3rd row ( in between the middle captains chair or electronically move and tilt the middle row captains chairs). One advantage is you can still tilt the middle row captains chair without having to remove a front facing car seat.
Good to see you stretch out on topics unfamiliar to you. This is important stuff for families. Keep it up
Huge thanks for doing this video. Kids charging devices, having friends, cousins, other family, etc is why we have a Palisade but kind of miss our Oddessy. I get to replace the Accord soon and want a truck for hauling the boat and kayaks around, hopefully a Ranger like truck is available by then.
Well done guys, excellent review video.
Kyle, EQS small correction. You can keep AC on after leaving vehicle, but they don’t call it dog or pet mode. I use it frequently in Florida when going to a second grocery store.
You can also turn on AC from the app. When out to dinner with friends, I dazzle them returning to a cool car. Of course , this nifty feature is also available in every Tesla too.
I love this comparison. Being someone with one kid and another on the way we are looking at third row EVs. My kid in a front facing car seat cannot be behind me when I am driving. It would have been cool to see John's car seats in the rear facing position in each vehicle. Those are the larger car seats.
I don't use my frunk much. Actually, adding length to the front to increase frunk space is a lot less efficient than adding length to the back to increase trunk space, because of the height difference. This is also why minivans are so spacious: they chopped down the hood length and added length to the rear.
Good point
I haven't watched the video yet but EV9 💯 1:17:45 This is very important testing, families care about family stuff, the numbers are just icing on top of the important stuff. 👍
We have the X with the 3rd row seat that we use all the time (4 kids). With the 3rd seat up, we can easily fit two large luggage pieces. We removed the divider long time ago and I don’t even know where it is and don’t need it
Exactly. Pretty sure for passengers the EV9 is probably more comfortable but if you have passengers and Luggage the Model X offers more space especially considering the front Trunk too. It’s not too far off the R1S for space I think. It’s just amazing how much space the Model X offers for traveling. The EQS with 3rd row is basically only usable for passengers because there’s no space for luggage left
Great video, one of the best.
As an owner of a 2019 X, I feel like the frunk and rear under-floor storage were glossed over here. The EV9 has tons of space, but without those 2 storage spots, is it really more than the X or the Rivian?!
Own a Tesla X. But seeing the space of the Kia, man is it bigger than the Tesla X to a point its making me think of getting rid of the X for the EV9.
Trash CCS and no compatibility with NACS....
Thats true. One of the disadvantages but its still tempting
They should be changing to NACS eventually
The problem is that there’s still exactly ZERO Supercharger NACS stations that support 800v charging.
Appreciate the review. What are your thoughts on taking the EV9 on snow/camping trips ?
I need to see that too. 😊😊
Just had to say that I LOVE this video. As a new dad of a 3-week old, she fits just fine in my model 3 with her stroller/bassinet/bags/etc. But getting everything in and out multiple times per day, I can tell is going to be painful so I’ve been cross-shopping electric SUVs lately even though I won’t buy one before the end of2025 when we’ll have multiple options with built-in NACS (and the daughter is approaching 2 years old). I was already leaning toward the EV-9 and this has done nothing to dissuade me of that notion. Still want to see the Blazer and I’m waiting for the Hyundai equivalent to the EV-9, and of course the ID Buzz, but this video has REALLY helped me a lot already!
Great video love it
@6:08 That is just so American :D The Rivian is massive compared to most cars in Europe I'd say. Even the EV9 is pretty big.
Agree, Americans what do you do with all that space.
@@paulc6766 I don't know, these all feel small to me. 🤷
North America is a pretty huge place and roads don’t date back to Roman times, but were built out in the ‘50s, when big cars were the norm. The R1S is a substantial piece of machinery, but compared to the average full-sized pickup, doesn’t look oversized. They’re a bit bigger than a Range Rover and I’d get one in a heartbeat, but for the price.
Great review. I'd like to see more about road trip viability comparison. I feel like EV9 and EQS would be last place for a road trip since it can't use Tesla efficiently. I like EV9 a lot but I just couldn't imagine a 2000mi road trip relying on EA chargers.
I have a R1S quad gen 1 and a MX Plaid. Oh yeah, and 3 kids in car seats. They're both amazing cars. Can't go wrong with either. MXP is more refined. R1S has way more space and 1 more seat. R1S gen 1 frunk is huge, and can legit hold 3 sets of walking bag golf clubs plus extra stuff. If I had to choose I would pick the R1S for practicality. Yes, calling the R1S practical is ridiculous. MXP is the coolest car ever. 0-60 in 2.5 seconds with kids in the back and groceries what a great idea
I have both R1S and X Plaid ( 2023) . By far, Rivian for the win. If I want to go fast and look at relatively poor build quality, I’ll take the X Plaid. However, for overall usability, build quality plus recent software updates too,Rivian by far and Rivian for the win.
Thank you for the daddy video. This info is super important video for so many people.
Great video. Thank you!
this is why mini vans are simply amazing family cars. wayy more space behind third row than those suvs
There is actually a way to leave the EQS climate on, although only for a few minutes, not indefinitely. You can press the preconditioning button in the climate menu and it'll keep the climate going while you do a quick grocery run or something
Exactly. It typically runs for around an hour and can be monitored through the App. My wife loves it to keep the groceries cool 😉
11:07 😂 hit a little to close to home, had to change the subject.
These families have little kids, but something they may not realize as as the kids begin to get older the ability to bring friends along becomes a big advantage. Maybe just a couple miles to carpool to school or activities or to go on a big trip. That extra one person capacity of the Rivian can be very convenient on occasion.
That's why I'd lean towards a bench seat VS captain chair on the kia
@@gelu88haha. I go back and forth w bench vs captain in our various cars. I currently have a r1s loaner for a month and I miss the captain seats as most of the time we have 6 pass and the 2nd row bench are one of the heaviest and difficult to use benches. At least w the captain chairs, the kids just go thru the middle gap.
Where to start! I appreciate the review. Some great points, and I think the final assessment is correct, as much as I would want a Rivian as a gearhead. I’ve got three kids, one at each stage of car seat in case you ever want to try this in the Austin area, we’d be glad to volunteer.
My wife trucks them around in a Yukon with captain seats, and I just don’t see any of these able to replace it, except maybe the Kia. I do think we need to rethink family haulers being exclusively SUV’s in the EV era. I recently found my Lightning to be maybe a better road tripper than the Yukon on our beach trip. I was able to keep stuff I wanted clean in the frunk, and throw baggage and things I cared less about in the bed under the tonneau cover. The truck is wide enough to fit three car seats across and has a spacious cabin.
I bet GM produces a Tahoe/Yukon with the big battery and acceptable all weather range for road trips, and it’s going to be a game changer. I’m already looking at the Sierra EV as my upgrade. Looking forward to more reviews like this, in addition to the performance content that landed me on your channel in the first place!
@22:08 - If only there was a way to create a door that isn't over engineered, fully moved out of the way, and kids couldn't open it too fast slamming into parked cars next to them.. Like a door that could slide..
Oh wait, that sounds like something on a car a woman who has kids would drive! Our insecure ego can't handle being associated with women or kids when we are trying to drive our family around!
Thank You folks for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste
🙏🏻 😊 ✌ ☮ ❤
I fit a double Bob Stroller in my Tesla X 6 seater. (need to pull off the wheels) the deep trunk helps.
Agree R1S offers the best of all worlds. Performance software, space off road capabilities and style. Others are really good but there can be only one winner. I'm curious about the Gen2 if they will have a heat for the 3rd row. Great point!
Thanks, guys!
My styling preference runs to the Kia EV9.
My software preferences are with Tesla, which has near perfect software.
I’m not wild about the googley Rivian headlights and snout, which automatically makes it third.
Mercedes is an empty suit that I won’t consider until they get serious about it.
I didn’t care for the Rivian headlight aesthetics either but I’m a function over form kind of person so bought it despite that fact. After owning my R1S for a year and a half it’s clearly a very well designed and the most capable all around EV SUV in my opinion. I would 100% buy it again.
The R1S has significantly more storage capacity compared to the AWD EV9 (including the frunk space). For example with all seats folded flat the Rivian had 115 ft3 vs 83.5 in the EV9. Nearly 40% more.
After having the R1S for a while I am surprised how many people actually comment that they like the looks of the headlights. And back my function over form outlook, the headlights work incredibly well.
@@e2dub It's misleading, Rivian includes all kinds of cubby spaces to arrive to that figure.
Seems like we need an electric minivan NOW.
45:45 you can use the physical key in the fob to lock the doors when you have utility mode on. At least you can in my EV6GT.
Hands down EV9 wipes the floor with those other imposters for a big family. Big= putting 7 people in the vehicle. Not even close. For imposters with 2 or 3 kids that don’t really need a 3rd row it may be a different story as some of the others score higher points for looks, premium feel, off road ruggedness, but just pure big family hauler, EV9 all the way. With that said, we still need a suburban size BEV on the market. I truly think if someone came out with it they could sell 75-100k BEV suburban size vehicles in the US at around the $80-100k level if build quality is premium
The Rivian and the EV9 are really close but for me with no kids, who uses my SUV for Home Depot runs and hauling all sort of stuff the Rivian wins with the much bigger frunk, bench second row flat floor and the absolute must spare tire.
Great video!
I'm really looking forward to the improvements in Rivian and VW as a result of their recent joint venture. How about a video on what innovations we might see from each automaker, Kyle?
So basically if Kia has bigger screen, software rivian has and charging of Tesla it would kill all the others
My kids are grown but I find this very interesting and informative for families. You're definitely going to have to do a test on the ID Buzz and Lucid Gravity of many of the things you did here.
And I agree, as much as super big SUVs like an Expedition or a Suburban don't do anything for me unless I was using them for camping it really does look like a beneficial vehicle for some one 6 feet 4 inches and taller. I'm 6 feet 2 and a half inches and drive a Model Y and it's enough for m but I have noticed that with my seat position it could possible be a little cramped for another tall person sitting behind me.
Kia and R1S for the win but the small frunk and subpar software on the Kia is a problem. I will say that all of these companies should be watching this and taking note. Even Tesla considering it looks like they could possibly be developing their own van. Now, I'm not sure if that will be a delivery van, consumer van or robo taxi. But some of the same concepts should apply regardles what they end up making.
Thank you Nick!
Great idea to remove the 2/3 bench seat. Reminds of old Mini Vans before the Stow 'n Go concept came out. Maybe Rivian can learn from this?
I believe you left out a word in your title, Big Wealthy Family
Model X looks ancient.
Stinks that the EV9 Club seat config you see in the UK isn't available in the US. Would be an amazing differentiator.
58:15 Cabin overheat protection runs for 12 hours not 24 hours, until battery is 20%.
Vinfast VF9 will suitable for big family 🎉
The center 2nd row seat goes down flat in the Rivian to help manage the kids in the back. Wonder if he knows that.
Sorry guys, you missed the mark. Kyle's opening statement was to compare these three family travel vehicles. Then, you turned it in to your usual speed race to Vegas. No family is traveling with the A.C. off, etc.
Great review, although there were two very important topics that were not covered, which are very important for family road trips: Charging and Towing.
Kia and Mercedes are still not able to charge on Tesla Superchargers, and the CCS charging network is unreliable and not nearly as available (Tesla has 60% more charging locations than the CCS infrastructure provides). It’s very frustrating to go on a road trip using the CCS charging network. That’s why Kyle’s Mom, Kathy, had his Dad, Out of Spec Dave, sign a 3 year contract stating that he would sell her Tesla model Y, because the trip to Florida from CT, and charging in Florida is MUCH better using Tesla Superchargers, than it is using the CCS charging network.
And even on Tesla’s Superchargers that have the Magic Dock, which allows CCS cars to charge on those Superchargers, since Tesla’s Superchargers do not support Kia’s 800 volt charging hardware, charging is abysmally slow.
Rivian is approved to charge on most of Tesla’s Superchargers with an adapter, which gives Rivian a HUGE advantage. And the Rivian can charge at full speed on Tesla’s Superchargers, unlike the Kia. The Tesla Model X can charge on all of Tesla Superchargers, plus on all CCS DC chargers, if you have an adapter. So the X has access to the most amount of DC fast chargers, and Rivian has access to the second highest amount of DC fast chargers.
With regard to towing, the Mercedes EQS can only tow 3500 lbs. The lower RWD trims of Kia’s EV 9 can only tow 2000lbs, and the higher end AWD trims can tow between 3500 lbs and 5000 lbs. But if you want to be able to tow 5000 lbs with the EV9, then you are forced to get the captains chairs for the second row, which means you lose a seat, and you won’t have the full capacity of the truck when the seats are folded flat, because of the missing middle seat.
The Model X also forces you to get the captains chairs (6 seat configuration) if you want the fast Plaid version of the X, which greatly reduces the cargo capacity, because Tesla’s captain chairs in the second row of the 6 seat configuration do not fold flat. They don’t even fold 3/4’s. They just move forward and tilt forward.
The Rivian is the clear winner in the towing capacity department, because it can tow up to 7700 lbs, and you get to keep all of your cargo capacity, because all of the seats fold flat, and you still get the bench seat with 3 seats in the second row.
As an EQS 580 owner, I’m very disappointed there is no frunk. I’d love to have the frunk and trunk well in EV9. EQS also has the weakest AC charging at only 9.7 kW. Come on MB engineers, get competitive.
On the positive side, my EQS with rear wheel steering handsomely beats all these vehicles with a much shorter turning radius.
Rivian win hamds down 💪
Tesla could do a model XL with a strait roof instead of slopping down like ti does
That would raise the drag coefficient (e.g. R1S is 0.28 vs Model X 0.24). So the battery would have to go from 100kWh to >115. Doable in a longer wheelbase but not really Tesla's modus operandi.
Quick recap.
The Mercedes is not a family suv, it is a luxury car. The model S can’t open its rear doors in my garage and has its issues. The rivian is a good option, but doesn’t sell in Europe. So that leaves the EV9. Good choice but I don’t like it, but that is just taste. For the price you can’t beat it, you just have to make a few concessions quality wise. Guess the Volvo EX90 will be popular here.
Over here we consider the Mercedes EQB or tesla y more like a family car. My i5 is too big for many parking spaces.
Personally I would prefer the EQS, but it is 160k Euro. But then again, don’t need 3 rows and prefer luxury.
huge model X windshield is great for christmas light drive thru shows
Airport ramps or those that go a round in circles. How each car would handle the turning and flat and slope.
Not sure if they've hit US markets, but Mercedes Benz also have the EQV and eVito (vans). (Though, haven't seen IRL, or too familiar with specs/features.)
Model X six seat config including the plaid, the second row doesnt fold at all. The middle seats are the same as the front. It really compromises the practicality of it as an SUV.
What kind of running boards are those on the blue (John’s) R1S? Sorry if mentioned but it’s a long video; TLDW (all of it)
Kyle & team, question about R1S charging. I saw your ENTIRE 😅 Race to Vegas with the 3-row capable SUVs, and I’m wondering if the Gen2 R1S having a heat pump and purportedly better thermal management (per State of Charge’s video interview with Rivian engineers) will remedy the charging concerns that had Kyle convinced the R1S would finish dead last. I’ve been dying to get an R1S because of the usable 3rd row and off-road capabilities now that it has Tesla SC access… but I got spooked a bit by that video. TIA
