What I Watched In June by Karsten Runquist. I appreciate the filmmaking and it's cultural impact, but it really wasn't for me. A little too many racial slurs for my taste 🤷♂️. 5/5

I really think Barry deserves a larger spotlight, it's such a well done series down to every point, the cinematography, the editing, its humor, its darkness, the acting, tension, the writing, the pacing. It's all so perfect and it's crazy how engaging it remains from start to finish while accomplishing so much good every episode in just 30 minutes.
It keeps pulling off tonal shifts that shouldn’t work, but somehow always do through the writing, performances, timing, and shot composition. It also has just the right amount of surrealism while being grounded in real consequences for the characters
I’m so mad that people don’t talk about Barry enough. It’s seriously one of the best shows of the decade and it delivers on SO many levels.
That's how I feel about Patriot, on Amazon Prime
The weeks when both Barry AND Better Call Saul were airing was heaven for me
@@yash_kapoor best two shows on tv
TG:Maverick is just such a genuinely satisfying break from most of the general blockbuster fare we get nowadays.
never saw the first one, but I was still really impressed with the new one
@@zacharywoloszynski4258 It’s cool that you don’t have to watch the first one to enjoy it. Of course it’s better when you’ve seen the first one but still
Honestly I didn’t really think it was good, still didn’t seem very different from all the mainstream modern movies people complain about. Just a basic story with basic stereotypes as characters. There was definitely some material there, some of the action scenes were well shot and definitely felt powerful. This may be very niche, but I’m angry that not a single person died in this movie, like half a dozen times a character was predictably saved “out of nowhere”. Made me root for the bad guys, they were better at flying the jets and should have won.
Basically I don’t know why everyone thinks this movie isn’t just propaganda and Memorial Day bait.
tgm is the anti-jurassic world dominion; both were unnecessary sequels, but tgm was a great movie made with a ton of passion while jwd sucked and was a soulless cash grab
@@itisinternet1282 it is propaganda and Memorial Day bait, but it’s also a damn enjoy movie
i acknowledge the passing of the months by when these videos drop
it was a slow month
top gun: maverick was absolutely phenomenal. its one of the only movies that had me grinning ear-to-ear all the way through
Just a fun time.
I agree that the action was phenomenal, but I was taken out of it because of the lacklustre story and some use of characters. To be fair, the final act was grinning for me all the way as well.
My mom and her friends saw that movie last night.
I had just watched the first film the day before and while I thought it was alright, Maverick is 100% better in every way
on another note i think it could honestly work if barry ended with a feature length film as it’s finale. a fourth season is already happening, but it sort of feels like a fifth one won’t be fully necessary. that might change with whatever they’re doing for season four, but a movie to finish out the series could honestly be kinda epic. to quote noho hank “i’m just riffing”
honestly that could be pretty cool. Stranger Things season 4 and Game of Thrones Season 7 and 8 already had movie length episodes, why not Barry?
top gun: maverick was the first film that made me want to watch it almost immediately after seeing it for the first time
i better see minions the rise of gru five times on your july video
11:35 on that note that certain scene in the finale (which i’m not gonna say what but if you’ve watched you obviously know what i’m talking about) was genuinely more scary than most horror films i’ve seen recently, he definitely should make a horror/thriller
That whole episode was masterful. Made me as horrified by what we DIDN’T see as what we did see.
The final was just every character being traumatized… and it was incredible
The thing I've found about Cronenberg films is that they're not really "about" any one thing. It's a lot of ideas and vibes. A nightmarescape even moreso than Lynch sometimes.
Agreed, I’m glad he’s still making movies. The world needs more weird movies.
Uptown girls is such a cult classic, like growing up with this has influenced a lot of girls , like dealing with mommy issues , having troubles with food , Diarrhea, (im not joking ), coming of age, trying to please everyone, the choices of living your your life carrying free or obey the rules and be perfectionist. The chemistry between them , the performance.
I love seeing people talk about my favorite show Barry! It's been 2 weeks since the season 3 finale and I still haven't stopped thinking about it.
My favorite thing about Top Gun is the recruitment booths set up outside the theaters!
Tom Cruise is also super awesome and totally not a psychopath, I swear!
yeah im shocked that the severity of the propaganda in that film went right over karsten's head. either that or it didn't bother him enough to knock points off.
@@m.e.p.7223 to be fair, the original film was also propaganda, just slightly less effective in a post cold war era.
What was outside the theater? (Haven’t seen it but also not a fan of Tom cruise:)
@@miaserna9096 navy recruitment booths
@@ryguythesci-figuy81 it's so easy for us to look back at old wartime films like that and laugh at how obvious the propaganda was, and then watch every major blockbuster out right now and ignore how they are all just blatantly glorified recruitment ads. hell, most of the marvel movies i've seen in theaters the past 6-7 years had actual recruitment ads before the previews. once you notice it, you never stop noticing it. i'm just surprised at how karsten's probably seen 10x the amount of films i have in my lifetime and hasn't picked up on it.
the only thing getting me through the months is knowing these videos will come 💔💔
Barry might be the best written, shot, and acted television show of all time.
I don’t know I feel like they just know how to frame what acting is supposed to do, but it feels too meta to be the best of all time.
GOD I CANNOT BELIVE IVE ONLY JUST FOUND YOU
Jim Henson really was a movie wizard. The Dark Crystal builds such a convincing and enticing world that just makes you want to be there and explore
Barry S3 proved that some TV series get better and better the more they go. If S4 is the final season by all means I’d be ok with it. End while you’re still good is how I see it. Also Bill Hader and Alec Berg are amazing TV directors.
I'm actually very excited to hear more about what you think of Ozu since my film class last semester focused pretty heavily on his work. Hoping for a longer video on some of his stuff! His humor really hits my buttons, and I love his pacing.
Nice, I wish I had gotten a film class like that. Ozu is so good at making stories that are really emotionally impactful because they're very real and grounded. Like Tokyo Story is about something that happens to most parents, your children grow up and become less and less a part of your life and suddenly they have no time for you anymore. He really knew how to draw drama out of ordinary pieces of people's lives
I saw the black phone in an empty theater with my friend and we had such a great time having the theater to ourselves that we applauded by the end of it. 8/10 movie
Thank you for mentioning Mad God. I saw it at a horror film festival in 2021 and haven’t been able to shake it since. Not many films have had this effect on me.
I watched:
the darjleen limited 9
The life aquatic with Steve zissou 7
Our father 7
Pride 10
Ransom 7
Hustle 7
Argo 9
The craft legacy 5
Little boxes 4
I was eagerly waiting for your take on Barry, I rewatched your video on it as soon as I've finished this season!
What I watched in June for the first time (not so much really, been a busy and rough month):
A Scanner Darkly (2006) 3/5
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) 5/5
Trafic (1971) 3.5/5
Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special (RIP)
Windfall (2022) 1/5
The 400 Blows (1959) 5/5
Series that i finished:
Barry (what a season finale, holy shit)
How to with John Wilson (great and underrated tv show too)
Currently watching:
Six Feet Under (s02)
Veep (s06)
Futurama (s05)
What we do in the Shadows (s03)
If you liked veep you should really watch “the thick of it”
The film that really changed me I would say is into the wild, it makes me cry every time, be more aware of the things around you and your family. there is more I could say but I don’t want a super long comment
I highly recommend the book that movie is based on as well. It's different, but it's probably one of the better books I've read in the last 20 years or so.
a few of my favorites that i've seen this month: 30 minutes or less, the darjeeling unlimited, and of course, top gun: maverick (probably my fav film of 2022 so far)!!! also i've been really enjoying ms. marvel, unlike many other recent mcu projects it has so much style and personality.
I was actually an extra in 30 Minutes or Less! I appeared in the classroom scene (I was ten years old and as a result wasn’t allowed to see in for a few years lol)
you should watch moonknight, I think it's one of the best mcu series'
@@dallasbarringer7029 that's so awesome lmao
@@Kaaaman i did watch it, during the first few episodes i was not invested in the journey at all but after the 4th episode i really started to dig it. and i agree i think it is one of the better mcu shows on disney plus.
In my media histories course, my professor had the class watch Double Indemnity as the example film for the film noir era. Everyone was engaged and my professor said he always has fun talking about the movie afterwards.
I think most of my films watched this June just consists of Coen Brother movies in release order (for story structure analysis) (I'm currently on Inside Llewyn Davis). But then there's also Lightyear, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Turning Red (again), and The World's End (again).
Barry finale almost felt like a series finale. I know it’s not but it felt like it
I saw JW Dominion (2 times because I've grown up with the franchise and it means a lot to me), top gun maverick, and the black phone.
Top Gun is an absolute must-see and is genuinely better than the original and is one of my favorite movies that I've ever seen in a theater.
I went into the Black Phone knowing absolutely nothing and loved it, I'm usually not even a big horror fan.
Dominion was a really fun movie but was definitely a little disappointing considering it's the finale of such a huge franchise and the pacing was way off.
A LIST OF THE MOVIES AND TV SHOWS I WATCHED THIS MONTH:
Better call saul season 6:5/5 I mean that mid season Finale and the build up to was executed amazingly.bravo Peter and Vince for making one hell of a journey. And I can't wait to see it's conclusion. It felt like all it got rid off it's innocence in a snake of a finger.
Eyes wide shut:5/5 it's so rewatchelable.I've seen it for 5th time now I'm still asking questions and I was also still finding new stuff in the Film.
Mindhunter: 4/5 this show really needs to get renewed. The writing and directing was great.Fincher has a way of making the viewers feel like they're in the scene by him doing that every Interegation scenes made me feel disturbed and anxious.
The meyorowitz Story New and selected:4.5/5 this Film feels Real to me because of it's dialouge Noah Baumbach dialouge really did a good job capturing how people speak, act and react.
I actually watched every Jurassic Park movie for the first time. The first one is a 5/5 classic and I even Jurassic World, warts and all. The other four though… oof that was rough. Especially Fallen Kingdom.
I watched "Breakfast at Tiffany's" for the first time. It's on youtube for free , with ads.
Couple of new watches this month:
The Bob's Burgers Movie: Loved it. While not perfect it succeeded in keeping the comedic style and heartwarming nature of the show, which is exactly what I wanted. Also the animation is gorgeous.
The Kings Man: Been meaning to watch it for ages. It was a pretty draining watch. Had one moment in it I was surprised with, everything else fairly mediocre. I did enjoy Rhys Iffans hamming it up as Rasputin though.
oh i'm so happy you liked empire records. it's an underrated fave of mine that no one really talks about. ♥
I love that movie too, although I've always preferred the theatrical cut as opposed to the extended edition. Is that weird?
The Dark Crystal is probably my favourite film ever. I love it soooooo much! 💗
Please make a video on Barry. Everyone needs to know how this is the best show on TV right now.
I watched everything everywhere all at once and faces places and I loved both of those a lot!!
If you enjoyed Free Solo, other climbing docs I'd recommend are The Dawn Wall, Meru, and The Alpinist. All are special for their own reasons.
Also, now that you've seen The Dark Crystal, you have to give Labyrinth a go! Definitely one of those ones it helps if you grew up with it, but you have to give it a shot!

I have no life 😢
I thought it was really cool! If you're passionate about films and enjoy watching them that seems like a good life to me haha!
yeah you don’t 😂
@@MichaelTurner856 thx bro
Holy shit. You're awesome.
I saw late spring for the the first time in cinema last November. Groundbreaking for 17 year old me
Full video for Barry season 3, please! The scene with Hank in the dungeon actually had me shaking. Still recovering from the last two episodes
Top Gun: Maverick is amazing. Same with Double Indemnity and Red Rocket.
Great video, thanks bud!
If you like climbing now you should watch The Dawn Wall!
Really exciting and much more character driven than I was expecting
i think it’s better than free solo , needs more recognition
I agree with the other comment, that I think The Dawn Wall was better than Free Solo, even though I really liked Free Solo. What those guys did on the Dawn Wall I thought was even more impressive, and the film is incredibly compelling. It makes a great companion piece with Free Solo.
The dark crystal is incredible
My new fav channel :)
I watched crimes of the future it felt unfinished to me, a lot of scenes were just characters talking with nothing going on and no importance to the setting. But the gold moments of the movie I just couldn’t get enough of, I’ve never seen any film like it.
I've had time off work so I've had a lot of movie nights lately. I ended up exploring different iterations of stories this month such as the remake of Rebecca (2020), the two oldest A Star Is Born, Pygmalion (1938) and Cyrano de Bergerac (1950). I fell head of heels in love with Cyrano. I rewatched Roxanne (1987) afterwards and, while charming in it's own way, it cannot compare to the grace, eloquence and intellegence of José Ferrer's Cyrano. There's another twenty-something movies including the wonderful My Man Godfrey (1936). Another man who stole my heart.
I watched
The Conjuring (rewatch)
The Conjuring 2 (rewatch)
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
The Wicker Man (1973) - best of the bunch
Mean Streets
The Addams Family
Corpse Bride
And today I plan on watching Spider Man: No Way Home.
Thanks for the videos, love your voice :D
Finally watched Greener Grass this month Karsten. Was da bomb
FINALLY, THANK YOU FOR CHANGING THE BACKGROUND TO A DARK COLOR.
Maverick seems like the type of movie that would be all "bro 5's" but turns out more wholesome than Grama's pies.
I was just here waiting for. your opinion on Barry and I am pleased
Here's a list of what i watched this month.
- Bo Burnham Inside Outakes: more songs to add to my favourite songs playlist. For some reason I didn't like Chicken as much as everyone else haha.
- Topgun Maverick: I almost cried in the theater at how good the film was. My heart was full of joy and happiness and excitement.
- Fire Island: I think the film's ok but quite forgettable for me
- Kiss of The Rabbit God (a short available on youtube): I love the style and theme. Quite impressive.
- Em and Trinh (a biopic about a late respectful songwriter in my country Vietnam, everyone here was going to theater for this film): I don't think I watched the same film as everyone else really. Everyone on the internet was bashing it, but I think it's very good. I love everything about it and don't think it's as poorly written as everyone thinks.
- EEAAO: My country was late to the game lol, theaters here have just bought it recently. Tbh, it didn't live up to the hype to me. An extremely fascinating film tho.
Karsten, you gotta watch Marcel the Shell. I just saw it last night and I absolutely loved it.

Karsten - how about a “italian movies ranked“ video? Or something more specific along the lines of Italy to make it less of a broad topic…
Your ranked videos are always amazing!!I’m a German moving to Italy soon. Would love to see which movies you think are best 🇮🇹😊
I was just at the Music Box theater tonight for Mad God! And I caught Space Odyssey in 70 mm. Amazing
I've really just been binge watching Babylon 5 this month. Surprised I haven't heard of it until recently. Very well written show(though dated special effects)
Smiley Face is a film I've been meaning to watch, as it looks right up my alley.
Edit: I just watched it, and I LOVED IT!
I watched that Chip N Dale movie and I am not familiar with those characters by any means but I gotta say it was actually pretty good and an overall cute movie. It reminded me of Roger Rabbit because of all the animation styles so I think for that alone it deserves some praise.
I normally type out most of what I've watched and my score for them in these comments
But I watched "A Brighter Summer Day" for the first time this month. So yeah, that's all I've been thinking about. Please please please watch this film if you haven't

Guys, a bit of a newbee question, so sorry for that. Where can I find some kind of definitive list of genres and movies worth watching? Preferably listed chronologically. I'd like to get into cinema myself, I have watched some classics and know how production works, but now I'd like to systemize the knowledge and expand my movie "vocabulary", I guess. Appreciate all the answers in advance. Stay safe and stay hydrated!
I feel so validated that you loved Top Gun :)
It’s hard to say late spring and Tokyo story which one is better, because both are masterpiece!
Wow! A Smiley Face shout out?! For sure- for certainly, a gem.

I’m at 3:03. Paused. I’ve had this thing where it’s like “why hadn’t I seen films that feel different?”. Almost like all the films I see kind of feel the same and blend, yet also don’t. Yet I know there’s just more that I’ve occasionally seen.
I think I might have just connected the dot that though cinemas have a aspect in this, the dynamic is also heavily played into what I watch on tv. The tv guide shows either literal repeats of films or films that now that I’ve seen and keep seeing all of them, feel like this.
Huh.
Been watching the man who fell to earth, love it so far
Went through a Wes Anderson watch this month from Rushmore to French Dispatch
watched the bear on hulu and wow i didn’t think i’d love a super character driven show about a busted kitchen in chicago but here we are
ive watched Django Unchained, Enemy, Dr. Stranger 1 and 2 (really enjoyed 1 but god was 2 a mess), first half of Ant-man, Top gun mav, The Batman again, Elvis, About time and JW unfortunately. also been watching The Boys, highly recommend; such a fun and dark show. oh yeah and Gilmore Girls on the side lol
i was drinking water while stating the vid, being told that is the greaatest ego thrill i was not expecting. i am now overpowered as i am hydrated
I wonder if he's going to still feel the same way about Late Spring after seeing more of Ozu's movies especially considering that several of them have basically the same exact plot and feel like just slight variations of the same movie
I really recommend going to see the Black Phone it’s not a scary film but it’s a good film.
would love to see you break down ‘the nightingale’ by jennifer kent. watched it for the first time & it shocked me more than any film ever has for me. sick film
Mad God 5/5 by God you are a trooper I had to watch it 5 times just realize that I shouldn't
Check out the Marcel the Shell With Shoes On movie, it was fantastic
barry is so fucking good ong
we need a Barry season 3 video please!!!
Agreed!!!!
Yes please! I would love to see a deeper analysis from Karsten, I know he would do a great job and RUclips is very lacking in Barry season 3 content right now.
I watched being john malkovich. No movie has gotten more giggles and "wtf"s out of me in recent memory. I do think that on a second watch the novelty will wear off and itll be hard to sit through because the unexpected insane plot points are one of its strongest aspects.
I watched it recently and really liked it but I felt like the first part was so much better than the second, great movie anyway, that low ceiling office is just pure genius
I watched Harold & Maude, What’s Up, Doc?, and Priscilla: Queen of the Desert
this is your best month
