It's funny because I really thought that the ending sequence of S1 was a metaphorical way of expressing that Rue was dying instead of "just" relapsing and I would have loved the idea to end the series there or build the second season upon that. @@RED01SEA I don't really think that Sydney's character is just for fanservice. YOU ARE FROM MINNESOTA!?!?!?!? I DIDN"T KNOW THAT! I am too! I love Fargo :) I reviewed it a long time ago on my channel, what a great way to laugh at ourselves. I also have this weird sense of pride of the Coen Brothers and Fargo.
As it happens I recently saw several of these -- Star Wars last night, Sweetie and The Player a few weeks ago. I love Sweetie, though I understand why you didn't connect with it. I've always had the feeling with Jane Campion movies that you're not exactly supposed to connect with the characters the way one normally does when watching movies. I don't know how to describe it, but I have the feeling that she DOES want to create a connection, but through a skewed angle. Her characters simultaneously seem well-developed, but also appear as if being examined under a microscope -- objectively and without emotion. (No, that's not the right way to describe it ... she's doing something all her own, but I don't know what it is.) Whatever it is that she uniquely does was much more obvious in her early films, but I felt it even in The Power of the Dog. I also recently watched An Angel at My Table -- I absolutely adored it. In that one she certainly engages the emotions more directly, but without sacrificing her alien way of seeing the world.
“People despise this, modern retelling is gimicky” 1. The general consensus has always been very positive towards R+J. 2. Most major Shakespeare companies do contemporary productions, hardly a gimmick.
los angeles plays itself was on the watchlist for my class on la and it was one of the best encapsulations and educations from the whole course material
Don't feel bad about not being able to understand the dialogue in Macbeth as if it were realistic prose dialogue. I'm literally a trained Shakespearean actor and I don't understand every word spoken in a Shakespeare play just from watching it. Nobody does. People in Shakespeare's day didn't. It's poetry, it's complex, there are some really specific cultural references that you just have no way of getting without reading a footnote. It doesn't make you stupid.
I fricken loved Barb & Star, especially as a student and big fan of the Groundlings and character driven comedy. Wish more movies would be willing to embrace goofiness and absurdity and just have fun like that.
Found what you said about The Wind Rises to be really interesting as an animator. I love that film but honestly thought the animation was a lot weaker than most of the other Ghibli films. Maybe I’m just too biased against computer-made animation but a lot of the people ( one of the things you praised ) in crowds were quite awkwardly animated in my opinion, and some of the main character’s movements feel in they’re in a nasty place between analog and digital techniques. Great film regardless though, I was just surprised you’d place it above Princess Mononoke, Castle of Cagliostro, Ponyo, etc.
If you enjoyed Tragedy of Macbeth I’d suggest Edward II! One of my favorite movies I’ve watched this past month. (Also if you wanna know more about the political context behind the macbeth story that the new one glosses over, I think the 2015 one does a very good job getting the context across!)

The First Reformed > The Red Shoes > All That Jazz > Barb and Star progression had me full vince mcmahon meme. All That Jazz is so so so good. It was one of my favorite movies for years until the Fosse/Verdon series came out and there was a scene where Fosse’s daughter gets upset watching Roy Scheider and the ATJ daughter rehearse their heart-to-heart dance scene. IIRC she was upset because it was twisting what actually happened and made it seem overly saccharine. I found it so interesting - that this autobiographical movie I had always assumed to be so raw and open could still have some blind spots and biases in it because of course it would. Anyways, after watching that I actually love it more now.

I'm so glad Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is getting some love! One of the funniest movies I've seen in a long while !!
The Wind Rises is both my favorite Ghibli movie and favorite just, movie in general, so I'm very elated to see you finally got around to experiencing it :)
Glad people are discovering Barb and Star i personally found my shimmer in February last year when it came out. OH MY STTARRRRRRR
watched brief encounter for the first time this month! so many earth-shatteringly beautiful moments in that film, and yet the scene i can't get out of my head is when they talked about donald duck with more reverence than i would afford, like, a nobel peace prize winner
Quick note: The 'a' sound in Baz Luhrmann's name isn't pronounced ah, it's A is in 'apple'.
Also, I assumed he went by Baz because his name was Barry (he's Aussie and we call often Barrys Baz in Australia), but he apparently changed his name to Bazmark. Just something to keep in mind.
as someone that currently doesn't have time to watch movies because I'm writing my thesis, I really appreciate getting to watch these monthly recaps. thanks karsten
Tragedy of Macbeth made me wish I read/studied the play in high school. Romeo + Juliet I understand because of how much my English class had us study it…but Macbeth, I wish I learned more about to understand it. I was lost with the dialogue.
I watched “All That Jazz” in a film class 2 years ago… really great movie
congrats on 500k!!!! you deserve it
I remember watching Barb & Star with my family and I was joking that one of the villains mouses was actually Stuart Little and this movie is a prequel to the Stuart Little movies
you didn’t even mention the love story in the wind rises?!?!? that shit gets me crying like a baby
i 100% agreed with everything you said about In Bruges. I watched it a couple times many years ago and remember loving it and laughing a ton at it. then a couple months ago i showed it to a friend and while I do still like it, it is slightly diminished. havent seen mikey and nicky (or even heard of it) so i'm gonna have to check that out!
I love watching Robert Altman because almost all of his films seem to top the one you watched previously
watched 22 films this month! in order...
Magnolia
The Maltese Falcon
Close-Up (rewatch)
Je, tu, il, elle
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage

Your Name.

I was in a L.A specific film class last year that LA plays itself was actually the first week required viewing lol
Watched the documentary Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father and it absolutely broke me. The saddest and most horrifying documentary that was extremely well done and personal.
Just thought about this movie again this last week. I don't think I've ever been so angry and frustrated, just destroyed watching a movie. I'll probably never see it again
@@okamiwolf250 I had so many angry and sad tears when watching this. I don’t think I’d ever watch this movie again nor would I recommend it to a friend lol
Lucky you got to see the Kanye doc 😭 I can’t wait
Congrats on 500k bae
Thank you for admitting how confusing the tragedy of Macbeth is to watch. I felt like I had to try so hard the whole time.
The Red Shoes is an absolute masterpiece. If you loved it, then I cannot recommend Black Narcissus enough too
YES Barb & Star!!! My favorite movie I watched this month, so glad you also enjoyed it. Would love to hear further thoughts.
CONGRATS ON 500K

Going to say this every video where you mention Ghibli - Karsten, PLEASE watch Whisper of the Heart!
Watched it with my girlfriend for the first time last night and absolutely loved it!
I rent Los Angeles plays itself every time I miss going to LA in the summer. Might have to rent it for a 4th time coming up.
Just watched blue velvet and loved it. Also rewatched fargo and it still holds up as one of my favs
Ram Leela is a better retelling of Romeo and Juliet
los angeles plays itself was on the watchlist for my class on la and it was one of the best encapsulations and educations from the whole course material
Always lovely to see a fellow Minnesotan on the rise
Nice work Karsty!!!! You are the best ❤️
Congrats on 500k man, would u consider doing a Coen Brother’s films ranked?
who needs mubi when you can just watch what karsten did!
If you enjoyed Tragedy of Macbeth I’d suggest Edward II! One of my favorite movies I’ve watched this past month. (Also if you wanna know more about the political context behind the macbeth story that the new one glosses over, I think the 2015 one does a very good job getting the context across!)

Congrats on half a milli subs, Karsten!
Congrats for 500k pls
I just saw Moby Doc. It was an amazing documentary!
I’d watch boiling point with Stephen Graham, really interesting watch about the service industry

i hate when people come on here and promote their favorite shows but im about to do it. Y'all need to watch Landscapers. I watched First Reformed last night for the first time, it really wasn't what I expected, it really takes that turn partway through. Pretty dark, maybe a bit too overly morbid. I thought some characters were definitely more cartoonish than the rest, but that's fine since they were relegated to the sidelines. Trying to make sense of that ending. Is the movie about zealotry, finding hope in darkness? Probably both. I thought it was really good, but I probably won't watch it again just because of how sad it was for me.
I think euphoria’s 2nd season is leaps and bounds ahead of season 1, cal’s cold intro in episode 3 is one of the saddest things I’ve watched recently
take a shot every time he says "come on"
I watched all 3 OG Karate Kids, and the Jackie chan one. Also Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane. Narnia Voyage of the Dawn Treader. And Kung Fu Panda!
