    Hey coach I would love to see a video where you analyze some of the less athletic players in the league, and how they make up for their lack of speed and jumping ability. Players like Steph or present Melo seem like obvious choices, but you obviously know a lot more about that than me. Thanks coach, love your videos

      Eh, while Steph is an absolute snail when it comes to straight-line speed, he's elite when it comes to lateral speed and agility. There are few guards better at cutting and stopping on a dime. That's why he's so good at getting himself open off-ball and creating sideways space for shots. Steph is actually pretty damn athletic, just not in a conventional way.

  • @agregs30
    @agregs30 6 лет назад +38

    Bumping or “scramming” is an excellent technique but it requires multiple defenders to be on the same page and have great anticipation. The margin for error is very slim. It’s no surprise that the Warriors and the Celtics are able to execute it frequently.
    However, offensive players with great anticipation and awareness will be able to identify the weak spots that occur in split seconds. Take the play at 3:24 for example. When Draymond switches onto JR in the post, both Steph and Klay execute a switch onto Tristian but I’d say a hair too late. Tristian is able to box Klay under the basket and get a possible easy look but JR misses the opportunity and the defense is set.
    It’s so awesome to see the anticipation battles between players with high IQs

    • @bballbreakdown

    • @hoanghale2671

    Steve kerr is so Smart and so lucky at the same time. He knows how utilize Draymond defensive prowess making him best defender in the league. He knows how to set screen and role with 3 to 4 players moving while the 2 best off ball players Curry and Klay continue to find an open shot.

    It baffles my mind how some coaches still have jobs when they cant make there players do a switch on the pick and roll. I underused the miss matches on the pick and roll switch but the nba pays the players millions of dollars they should at least try to switch and stay with the man they pick up

    • @joshuahart153
      @joshuahart153 6 лет назад

      Sometimes it's a personnel issue (they don't have enough defenders that can switch pick and rolls) and sometimes not switching is a decent strategy... sometimes you can blitz the ball handler, or hedge with the big man before going back to the original assignment, or things like that. It becomes a problem when you don't try to do any of that simply because guys are becoming so good at shooting off the dribble, so you can't just go under the screen anymore.

    Thing is, Steve Kerr isn't really hiding any secrets, this is just common sense on defence. If you have an unfavourable matchup you need to switch in order to better the odds. The difference is that Golden State has a very effective way of implementing switches in the middle of a play without giving up an open lane or open shot. Doing this away from the ball is also a testament to their discipline.
    A lot of teams are busy trying to figure out lineups and maximising their offensive capabilities, but they fail to pay attention to these key defensive principles that provide them with an opportunity to execute their offence in the first place. I've always felt that Golden State can play the way they do because they are so tuned in on defence that their offence just comes naturally to them.

    If they pre switch can’t you just bring the other guy up too for a double screen.

    The fact that Steven Adams was a better option in the PnR defense than Melo is just sad. Melo has been in the discussion of top 10 players for the longest time and can't play any defense.

    most of those 90's heads that say there's no defense today don't know what's going on and since they don't see bodies flying on the floor they assume today's game has no defense lol

    Melo joined the rockets to stop getting exposed just like Tucker was signed so he’d stop defending Harden

    why would a switch away from the ball be illegal 15-20 years ago? Just curious.
    edit: nevermind.
