coach i know "positions" in the NBA are pretty much obsolete, but could you please do a breakdown of every position on how they're suppose to play (give an example of the best tradition player of that position) and then how they play now and give an example of the best....for example point= CP3 best tradition/ James harden best now

If you're seriously impyljng that you prefer 80s defense over today's, then you're way off.
Offense went way up, defense went way down, the former mostly due to fantastically sophisticated coaching and the latter due to rule changes and abysmal judicial criteria introduced in the 2000's to boost popularity.

You guys need to watch more Euroleague, this play originated from serbian coach Obradovic (Fenerbache) about 2 years ago, now almost every european team plays like this!!
And the way to defend it is: after the first screen bought of the guards just swich (backscreen defender takes guy with the ball and ballhandlers defender gets to the backscreener ) and the big guy needs to get through the backscreen by him self+ the week side can always help the big man while he gets back to his guy.

In fact, I'm going to review the tactics from earlier Spain games. I've always had the feeling that most of the recent success is due to the heavy work done by the 2006 team and coach. The team almost ran on its own for years after he was fired for not putting up with bullshit from the federation.

BBALLBREAKDOWN Only problem I have is, it's Lazy Offense designed to keep the ball in the initial ballhandler 's possession.

3 biggest influences in NBA: European style of play, Steph Curry, Analytics
The origins of this play come from Zeljko Obradovic,one of the greatest coaches of all time and definately an upcoming hall of famer. He was the first that ran the spain pick n roll with Panathinaikos Athens back in 2002. His team won the euroleague title in 2000,2002,2007,2009 and 2011 where with players like Diamantidis,Sarunas Jasikevicius and Mike Batist, spain pick n roll became poetry! The Spanish team decided to run the play and so they called it spain, the truth though is a little bit different.I personally feel blessed to Zeljko Obradovic for changing the way basketball is played with his incredible intelligence and creativity.We must give credit right where they belong to,so credits to Greek and Serbian basketball,where the game is still pristine.
That's not what happened according to Sergio Scariolo... he said that he came to this play naturally in 2009 when he was coaching the russian team Khimki. It was a way to take advantage from Mozgov, who was his center in Khimki... when Scariolo started coaching the Spanish National Team he just started using that play massively and that's how american coaches imported it into the NBA, and started to call it Spanish pick and roll...
@@JulioLeonFandinhoType: Zeljko Obradovic Spain pick and roll. He used it way back in 1996 with Real Madrid. And he wasn't the first to run that offense. His former coach Duško Vujošević used it in the late 80s. Same thing with Shammgod - there's some random guy from college who used it in the 90s, but in reality it is Yugoslav crossover. Dejan Bodiroga perfected it in the 90s and early 2000s, but it was used A LOT by Danko Cvjeticanin in the 80s, but it was Serbian/Yugoslavian legend Dragan Kićanović who used it first in the 70s.
Coach we like the videos like this where it doesn't necessarily break down a single game , but we'd also like to see those too. Breakdowns of big games was what brought em to your channel back in 2015

Would love to see kd as the ball handler with draymond screen setter and curry as the back screener for draymond the options would be crazy with klay in the weak side or Javale as the screener and draymond strong side and klay weak side so many deadly combinations and options
Screen-the screener plays have been pretty popular for a while now. Herb Magee at Philly Univ (now Jefferson Univ) has been running it since the early 90s. It is a great play for sure!

I Love this play, it's so beautifully simple. I think Cleveland should definitely use this set, to give them some relief from their high effort iso plays. They have an abundance of spot up shooters who could spread the corners for this (Kevin Love, Kyle Korver, Richard Jefferson, Channing Frye, JR Smith and Shumpert). They could use it in a number of ways:
-Kyrie or Lebron handling the ball, with Tristan Thompson setting the ball screen, and Lebron or Kevin Love setting the back screen.
-When Lebron is off the floor, use Kyrie handling the ball with Thompson, Love, Frye or Korver setting the screens.
-When Kyrie is off the floor, use Lebron handling the ball with again Thompson, Love, Frye or Korver setting the screens.
-Try having Shumpert or maybe RJ handling the ball with the help of screens from Lebron and Love. They are less talented ball handlers but this type of splitting the defence may give them enough space to help out with the "playmaker" issues.
-Most importantly, when Thompson is off the floor, they can run this play with all 3 of their best players being directly involved. With Kyrie handling the ball, Lebron and Love can set the screens either way around, in order to get Lebron and Kyrie going to the rim, or get high quality spot-ups for Love from 3 or mid-range. This may improve their offence in these lineups, and offset the disadvantages of having no interior presence without Thompson.

I think the OKC could upgrade Russ-Adams pick and roll to this. Russ will be so much effective. Sabonis(PF) can shoot 3s. They only lack a SG or SF to shoot 3 consistently.
And they had it in their offense last year!
Hi coach, can you make a breakdown for Dallas Mavericks, winning back to back against San Antonio and Cleveland?
This pick and roll play was known way before the Olympics.
One option I think is being overlooked is the guard back screening on these plays often aren't really being guarded. Their man is so worried about switching, they're not paying them any mind. If the PNR was set high enough with the back screen around mid block to high, the back screening guard could immediately turn around and get a back door lob, bounce pass, or whatever. It may or may not be there, but just in these clips I think its possible.
Coach, I heard that you were planning to do a breakdown comparing the Warriors from this year to last year. I'm curious, are you planning to do the breakdown during the All-Star Break or some other time? Also, can you do a breakdown on the Utah if you happened to have the time?
THANKS for giving credit where it's due. Scariolo was never a bad tactician, it's his team selection and rotations what make him an arguable national coach at the very least.
One analysis that I'd really like to see is one on Spain's defensive system on the 2006 world championship. They were running a shifting system (sometimes shifting from 1on1 to different zones up to three times within a single possession) that was a nightmare for every other team except, maybe, Argentina. You have the vids on youtube, give them a look :)

Also, something you didn't mention is that IMO this play is as much about transition defense as it is about trying to score.
In the standard PNR, when both players crash to the hoop, your team becomes completely unbalanced because you don't have anybody back. But in this "Spain" PNR, you have a player literally sprinting back toward his own hoop as the PNR is taking place.

The Warriors could defend this with the lineup of death having Draymond , Iggy and Kd guarding the paint and closing out on the shooter. However they would be killed by every lob catcher in the league when Zaza is out there. This might be a usefull weapon to force Steve Kerr to use the lineup of death more than what he wants and eventually wear the starters down.
It's best when a Small Forward is setting the backscreen. A lot of teams don't have a Stretch-4. This eliminates that problem. A perimeter guy is at Top of Key instead of the PF.
Communication is Key!
Coach Nick, have you seen teams run this play, "Spain," where the ball handler attacks the rim after the high ball screen is set, and kicks it out to the corner man who then skips it to the back-screener at the top for an open 3 look? I could have sworn I saw San Antonio run this variation several times!
Panathinaikos Athens did just that in 2002 Euroleague Finals. It was Željko Obradović who ran this action back in the 90s with Real Madrid and later with other teams. Gregg Popovich is a friend of Obradović and said that he borrowed some of his plays. Željko Obradović said back in 2014 that he spent summer dissecting San Antonio offense, especially positioning and off ball movement.
coach why dont teams trap the ball handler hard when they run the pick and roll? if you blow up the initial action you get into a scramble situation and then at least you have a chance of forcing a turn over. id like to hear your thoughts on this

Also I think an important aspect is the timing of the backscreener, too early is not good right? You want the timing to be closer to when the ball handler nears that big man so it's like PnR #2. I think of SPAIN as two PnR's in a row...right?
2 reasons the Warriors don't run this YET #1 Steph don't attack the basket the way most of the guards in this video attack which is KEY to the initial action & #2 KD is one of the WORST screen setters in the league according to a Warrior beat writer

Tonio5100 true I think Dray as the ball handler would be the most effective though because the 4 or 5 will be put in a very unusual situation either way that's why it's always great to have playmakers who can also shoot and penetrate the defense.
The key is having an Aggressive ballhandler that is thinking Dunk/layup 1st. I can't stand these soft guards that have no intention of getting to the rim. Give me Westbrook or Isaiah Thomas anyday. You can call it Spanish, Russian, or Chinese pick & roll if those 2 guys are the ballhandler.

do the lakers run this? would be good action with Lou will or DLo as primary ball handler, zubac/nance/randle as the rollers, nick young/clarkson/deng setting the back screen. i think stressing a GREAT back screen makes Spain PnR work because the defender has very little time to make a decision and communicate the coverage to his teammates. unfortunately, few Lakers set good screens =(
Also for the high PnR's why not just go under the screen? Not many will want that 3 quite that high. Unless you are Curry or Lillard.

I first saw it in the Olympics by the Spanish national team of Gasol and Co.
It was used by European GOAT Željko Obradović since the early 2000s. And he took it from Duško Vujošević, who was his coach in Partizan in the late 80s.
Dean Smith ran all that. They used to run it for Ed Cota, Vince Carter, and Antawn Jamison.

i think so; cousins, m.gasol are considered the 2 best centers and they can spot up for 3s, drive and finish if you run them off the line, post up, and pick and pop for long 2s; they don't just sit on the left block and wait for the ball. KAT, embiid, jokic, and porzingus can all do that as well.
Why not just call it a Spanish pick and roll? Spain pick and roll is a weird way to say it. But this is action we run on my high school team and it was cool to see this analysis of it and learn where it kind of came from

The answer to this is either rotate very quickly, or just switch the initial screen and roll. Now all the offense has is a backscreen for a slow bigman.

Maybe it would, but a zone is kind of easily exploitable by NBA and even good college teams. So while you might stop this action, there are a ton of sets designed to defeat zones and thus you will be forced to go back to man-to-man.

Yeah I think the pnr mechanics on 2k aren't bad, it's the defense that sometimes lacks consistence, but with the correct settings (using ICE can be quite effective) you can manage to get around it.

You're never going to defend this play (or defend well in general) if you're stuck in this antiquated strict man to man mindset.
You're also never going to defend this play if you're depending on verbal communication between the defenders (as in a defender yelling "pick left/right"). Again, that's an antiquated mindset.
Verbal communication is nice to have, but you shouldn't depend on it because it's unreliable. First, it might be too loud to hear. Second, what's stopping somebody on the other team yelling "pick left/right" when there's nothing there, just to fool you?
A defensive system (and offense too) should be based on players seeing things with their own two eyes and acting/reacting accordingly.
