Only like ice defense when u have mobile big men... I'm a guard and when I see ice defense and a slow footed big man in front of me I attack him every single time. And then I haven't even mentioned the fact that it's always an open three for the big man, so ice is vulnerable against good shooting bigs...Great video breakdown!

Hey coach. I play a lot of pickup, and I learned a lot from this... but... I set a lot of screens, and very rarely does anyone ice me (It's just dudes in the gym... it's not like we have team practices or anything... I'm pretty sure nearly none of them know what icing is). This is of course... basically a cheatcode for 2 on 2 (since there's no help D under the basket) but if nobody ices... it's just different. Maybe you could do a video showing how to make defenses pay for not icing?

If they don't ice, it s a switch right? You just abuse the mismatch or roll hard if they hedge. My friend and I ice everything and many people seem to not be able to pick and roll against us.
It's not quite that simple. Sometimes you switch on ice too. Ice simply puts you in a better position to deal with a switch. It's easier to get over the screen and follow, but if they take the screen tight and are not a 3 point shooter, you can still go under. The reason for going under in this situation is actually to prevent the second drive to the basket.
If you ice and go under toward your man, the screener can't move (or it will be a moving screen). Then, you just slow down the drive, pressurize the jumper, and switch.
This is a good idea with someone like Russel Westbrook (on the Thunder). He can burn the switch, so you want to slow him down. He's a willing and able midrange shooter, so you want to pressurize it, and he's not particularly good at passing out of a double, so you can take a bit of a risk doubling him before you switch. With Russ, you would also be okay with a 3 point shot.
But... if you are guarding Steph Curry, no matter how tight he takes the screen, you absolutely have to go over it, he's just too good of a shooter (and not as big of a threat against secondary defense in the post... if it's waiting for him. He's a good finisher when the secondary defense just got there,, but if they are just hanging out, all he's got is a floater (which he can't really risk if you are right behind him).
It totally depends on who's involved... but yes... the primary purpose of icing is to save time getting over a screen.
If they take the screen, that means you didn't ICE their pick and roll. You are supposed to deny their use of the screen. If you go under, then that's not ICE at all. He just screened you.
I wouldn't rely on them calling moving screen on that. Probably if it's really by the book and that player is known for it, but even then, I wouldn't rely on it. Especially if you are talking about pick up games. You'll just get angry and their lives will move on.
I don't have any comments on the NBA level. I'll just take your word for it.
I don't think you understood what I was describing. If you ice a screen and your man beats you and takes the screen anyway, you essentially have 2 choices. If you go over, you can contest a shot, perhaps from behind. If you go under, you prevent a run to the rim (or your help does) and you also prevent the person from picking and rolling... he'll have to pick and pop instead (because when he sets a screen, he has to let you get around him, or it's considered a moving screen). Of course, this comes at some cost. If either of these players are capable 3 point shooters, they will get a pretty good look... but... the pass to the pick and pop will be rather difficult (4 hands in the passing lanes).
As for the icing and not letting them through thing, it depends on the team. Think about Delevadova vs Curry. He was all up in Curry's grill and he was actually willing to take ice position and let curry through. The reason for this is that Deli was fast enough that Curry couldn't get a 3 off (not a good one anyway), but Curry would be able to get to the key. That's fine, considering that if deli cut off the drive for the middle, they would instead screen under and curry would force the switch (who was usually a big and Curry would burn them, and Curry is an underrated decision maker once he burns his man). The Cavs preferred to take their chances with Deli icing simply to get over the screen faster.
You can ice to trap, or you can ice to get over a screen. It totally depends on your needs.

Even in 3-on-3 I've seen players ice pick-n-rolls and my reaction as the big guy up top was often to turn it into a pick-n-pop and hit the cutter on the other side (if his man was ball watching), or just shoot the three. Like Mr. Petersen said, you have to know your man and make your decisions accordingly.

Because the on ball defender wouldn't cancel the screener in time, even if he did the lane would be wide open for a drive.

i would never coach ice for a top down screen side pnr, to much seperation for a pop, and the stun that follows.
down up side pnr you can play it without giving to much ground forcing rotations. but top down like the start of the video will get killed everytime.

Who even uses ice anymore? There are so many bigs who can shoot now and a lot of screens set by guards or forwards (KD etc) that it's just not nearly as useful as it was when it changed the NBA in 2010-11.
tteverywhere 97 but I play oin high school and not everyone on my team are the smartest, and they just panic and turn the ball over when the get iced because they ain't never seen it
