How The Rockets Expertly Attack The Hard Hedge

  • The Rockets are a smart veteran team who attacks the hard hedge on offense using various concepts such as slipping the screen, changing the angle of the screen and more. James Harden and Chris Paul manipulate the defense and that helps as well. I also add some bonus content with a screening observation regarding Clint Capela. NBA

    I love how you don’t just show the made baskets. Sometimes you get exactly what you want offensively but the shots don’t go in.

    Great video. Very informative! I really enjoyed the analysis on changing the angle of the screen. The use of slip screens to counter hard hedges is very effective too. A lot of teams don't expect slip screens.

    Not surprised that one of the things they use as a counter is some slipping of screens when a hard hedge is coming. I saw a video on another channel, I’m forgetting which one, that one of the things UMBC did against Virginia which was so successful was to slip screens against the hard hedge often.

    I have a question for Coach Daniel; Love your work by the way; could you summarize or characterize the modern game in 'shortest amount of words' to describe multiple numbers of set plays by the following; "Spread the floor, collapse the D, look inside the paint, take the 3" basically in no specific order. Would that be an acceptable way to define the way basketball, especially Mike D Antoni rolls with his offense? Or is this just plain old wrong? ( i am aware of the 7 seconds or less principle). Respect to your channel and analysis of the game. Massive Respect

    Why don't they just go under the screen when it is set near half-court? There is no risk, only giving up a 3 way way behind the line.

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  6 лет назад +1

      Yep when at half court going under is best, though it can be tough to navigate and communicate in certain circumstances.

    • @andyofzz
      @andyofzz 6 лет назад

      tteverywhere 97 the big men of the rockets are faster, even the initial defender goes under, player like Clint could beat his defender to the hoop, forcing help defense opening up a corner 3.

      Go under while the bigman defender stays closer to the rim than his man.
      Not go under and hedge, just go under.

    could you do a video on how to play against a 3-2 zone defense

    • @ehjazkhan9521
      @ehjazkhan9521 6 лет назад

      Against a 3-2 zone defence we play (41) 4 out 1 in. All the centre does is go from elbow to elbow on the strong side (where the ball is). With four out the three guards run like crazy to keep chasing the ball. One the ball hits the centre you can run triangle offence or if both wing men cut you can have 3 v2. Hope that makes some sense, but 41 offence puts 32 zone under a lot of pressure especially if you have good 3 point shooters.

    When they (Capela/Anderson) set the high screen for Harden why don't opposing teams trap him near half court and force Capela/Anderson to make a play?

    • @roxfan28
      @roxfan28 6 лет назад +1

      Floyd steel A trap is a double team which leaves a man open and capela and Anderson are decent passers. That would open everything up for Houston

    • @floydsteel1703
      @floydsteel1703 6 лет назад

      cHicks I'd say they're good passers in the right situations, when Capela is sitting comfortable in the post he can pass out to a cutter and Anderson is a good swingman but I think harden passing it out of a double near half court to one of them a couple feet behind the arch would force them to make a dribble pass play which they aren't very good at.

    • @a.k.infinity1502
      @a.k.infinity1502 6 лет назад +2

      Depends on the read. If Capela sees a trap on the way (not quute there) he's gonna have a full head of steam 2 the basket. If Anderson sees the same thing then he's wide ass open at the 3pt line. The Rockets have a pick ur poison offense. U are always in a bind and are forced 2 commit 2 something that u would rather not have 2.

    • @floydsteel1703
      @floydsteel1703 6 лет назад

      Scott Tebebi how could Capela "see" a trap on the way? They would come at random obviously the warriors are too smart to make it predictable...I'm pretty sure teams would be comfortable letting the role players like Anderson beat them with 3's instead of letting Harden go into the iso one on one game he loves so much

    • @a.k.infinity1502
      @a.k.infinity1502 6 лет назад

      Floyd steel ive watch them all season. Capela and Harden have great repore. This is what they do. People think they just shoot 3's. They actually read and react to whatever the defense does. Have you watched their 1st couple playoffs games? This holds true.

    Isn't not screening at all a very similar concept to slipping through the screen?

    • @coachdaniel8163

    Difference between Blitzing and Hedge ?

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  2 года назад +1

      Blitz is when the screeners defender traps the ball and forces a pass. A hedge is when the screeners defender jumps out quickly but then returns to his own man to prevent an advantage.

  • @gustavnedergaard7421
    @gustavnedergaard7421 6 лет назад

    Why is it that the defender cant just go under the screen when its is all the Way back at the halfcourt?

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  6 лет назад

      Good question and yes when the ball is near halfcourt the defender should go under. But that doesn't always happen.

  • @Floyd_Steel

    Why not just switch if your gonna hedge? Hedging then trying to get back to your man causes too much confusion

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  5 лет назад

      Well if you switch now your giving Harden a mismatch. Not a lot of bigs or even forwards can guard him well.

    • @Floyd_Steel
      @Floyd_Steel 5 лет назад

      @@coachdaniel8163 I rather that than Harden getting a straight line drive cuz the defense is miscommunicating. Let the mismatch stick to his left and funnel him into the help.
