this is why its idiotic to say that there's no defense in today's nba. It's more strategic and mental rather than physical like the 90's.
Yeah, I feel like the biggest changes were those made to the illegal defense (allowing for zones instead of strict man coverage) and the removal of hand checking.

It's an interesting point to think in the year 2050 or whatever, will we have a completely functional all 7 footer lineup and how will that look?
With the way the NBA is going, in the year 2050 the defenders will be prohibited from getting inside a two meter radius of the offensive players, and they'll also not be permitted to enter the paint at all.

The average height has been about the same for about 60 years...in fact centers got smaller..in the 60s the average height of centers was 6ft10.35 barefoot and the average height of centers today is around 6ft8.66 barefoot
I greatly appreciate you showing breakdown including shots that miss frequently independent on whether it was a good defensive play or not. Too many videos highlight the outcome and not the process.
I noticed the same thing. When you see the ball go in, you get that dopamine hit. But when it doesn't go in, you are more rational.
Great breakdown, Coach. Based on the clips, Jokic's defense thrives in the modern NBA but is underappreciated by mainstream basketball fans - high IQ, can recognize the gaps, and is optimal in low-man help and rotations.

That's one of the reason why I think coach Malone has been overlooked by this year's GM poll. GMs don't understand defense like that. If you've paid attention to defensive principles and how well implemented they were with the Nuggets, you'd know they were going to win a championship. And that's a lot to do with Malone figuring out the best defensive approach around Jokic
This is an incredible breakdown. Coming from just finishing my college basketball career, it is interesting to see what is the same and different in the way NBA teams defend. I think the main thing to remember is that NBA players are just so elite offensively that it is naive when fans say that NBA players don't play defense or can't "stay in front" of their man.
Used to be true in the past but nobody is really that freakishly skilled or athletic in the nba anymore. This dude keeps saying "modern nba" like it means something. Modern nba just looks like slightly better college

Euroleague plays better defense than today's NBA. And all they did was change up a few rules. FIBA tournament was a taste
Euro follows FIBA rules. Court is smaller,3pt line is shorter and rules like no 3sec defensive changes the game so much,can't say "just a few rules" cause the impact is huge

Defense back then is not better.
The highest scoring era in the nba was the in 60s. The highest fg% era was the 80s. The least free throws per game is 2010-2020s. Most free throws per game 1960s. The highest 3pt% is spread all over the place. The most 3pt shots taken is 2010-2020. 2010-2020 has the least fouls per game of any era. Most assists per game was the 1980s. According to the numbers, the numbers, I just don’t understand how you came up with the assessment. Maybe you can clarify?

@loosie.goosie per game and per possession scoring have been increasing for the last 20 years, it was highest in the 60s but it decreased towards the 90s and has been increasing since 99. Per possession scoring is the highest its been since they started tracking it in 1975.

it's also become tougher on defenses because the offensive player is allowed so much more physicality without being penalized. Multiple clips in this video show the offensive player shoving and pushing the defender with their off hand to get space as their being picked up. That's something that would have been called an offensive foul pretty often years ago. Allows a lot of teams to extend possessions and more opportunities to score when the play realistically should have been shut down.

It would be great if you could show how illegal defence greatly affected the game in the 80s/90s allowing more 1on1 in the post.
There was no zone defense back then. At least in the 90s. So it was all 1 on 1 besides double teams.

Of course, during the 1980s, there was no flagrant foul. So teams used plenty of tactics to harm/injure high scorers. Get hit hard enough, and players can no longer score freethrows or even move.

Also, the 2000s are the most defensive era of all time, not 1990s. Most teams during the 2000s only scored about 90. Thats why 2005-2006 Kobe averaging 35 means so much.

It's funny how you just go around regurgitating the same nonsense without actually disproving the concepts he provided in the video such as hedging, collapsing in the paint and being able to make passes to 4 players who can shoot whereas 2 decades ago, it would at most be 2 3 pt shooters or players camping around the elbow

Long gone are the days where you have an unskilled PF in the dunker's spot fighting for rebounds. You need a PF who can space the floor and shoot otherwise they become a complete liability on offense.
Also it's funny to see how people still want to perpetuate the narrative that Jokic can't defend. He's not an athletic shot blocker, but his positioning and awareness of the court is so good that he's able to get a good contest every time. The only way I see the Nuggets getting beat is if the Suns are firing on all cylinders to take advantage of all those open midrange shots that they give up
That doesn’t account for the fact that Jokic has no vert, and is slow, which doesn’t bode well for him in defense, which is reactionary. Advanced stats put him as an average defender. He’s not a good one, stop with the nonsense.

@@lukekiefer5964 Obviously Jokic isn't as athletic, but that's pretty much irrelevant if you have strong perimeter defenders and a high IQ which Jokic has. We didn't see a single team find a "solution" to attacking Jokic on defense. The closest was the Suns but that required Booker having an all-time great performance, backed up by KD and unlikely heroics from unreliable role players. As soon as that stopped, the Suns got blown out.
Maybe if the Warriors are clicking, but even then I don't see them beating the Nuggets in a 7 game series.

Question: this playoffs jimmy butler got many “and ones” doing post-ups from the side…. From where defenses were less accustomed to defending than “ down hill from the top” and maybe that caused the fouls??? I noticed the nuggets didn’t challenge paint shots- staying a good visual distance from the shooter…. Are those hallucinations … I had …???

When people say that teams don't play defense nowadays and that defense was better in the 90s or 00s it just shows how little they actually pay attention to anything besides the finals score.
People also neglect to acknowledge that there is no longer hand-checking and players are allowed to carry and travel on every possession now, as well as get away with offensive fouls like never before. Offensive players initiating contact was almost always a foul up until the early 80s, and it only became more lenient because the pace slowed and defenses began to play more physical outside the paint in the 90s and early/mid 2000s. All of this combined with spacing and absolute snipers from three makes defense almost impossible in today’s league.
@@lukekiefer5964 The not calling carrying thing has been around forever, just watch some MJ and AI highlights. But yes, it is more egregious and its not just stars that get away with it. The far bigger change in the rules is getting rid of the illegal defense rules from the 90s imo.

The relaxed rules and the increased skill level of players today has made defending so much harder.
Don't forget the screens as well. There's only so much a defender can do when pretty much every screen set today is a moving screen.
If watched ball since the 90s defense is no existent and players barely put in the effort it’s very noticeable and defense has been bad since 05 some teams still put in effort but not as physical because they would get a bunch of fouls

Its a generational cycle. Older generation would always look at the next generation to be softer. Bill Russell and Wilt called the 80s and 90s soft and said MJ wouldn't be able to play the way he does in their days. 20s-40s basketball look at the 50s-70s basketball as soft as they used to play in a caged court and its literally no blood no foul. While men from 300 years ago would probably laugh at us while putting a ball in a ring and call it a sport when they kill other men as their sport. Its just a pattern. Perceiving evolution as to being soft. Everyone falls for it.

Great video, most people don't understand that most good modern NBA teams put in a time machine and sent back would blow most previous all time great teams out the water. The game evolves.
Tacko Fall is a starter in the 80s but he's out the NBA rn because versatility and footspeed is essential. Rudy Gobert is literally one of, if not THE all time best defensive player in any other era but gets targeted in pick and roll/switches limiting his value in the modern nba. Centers back then didn’t have to contend with that. Time moves forward, tactics change and old ways become less effective.
No. Because in the 80s, their way of dealing with great offensive players was to physically harm them. No flagrant fouls, a player prone to injury (current Lebron, or Anthony Davis) would be tackled when they are most vulnerable.
A current player in the 1980s environment will lose alot of stamina due to the bully ball game. In terms of Steph Curry, he will receive plenty of unnecessary shoves when flagrant fouls dont exist, for the sake of tiring or injuring him
You cant compare eras too easily. Today's league is filled with load management, players playing half season games to avoid injury. Except in an era with no flagrant fouls, various players try to injury you
A 1980s player may not perform well today. But a modern day player put in a 1980s environment is put in a rough prison ball type game that quadriples the chances of injuries.

Modern nba players have a good 15-20 pounds more muscle now than the 80s & 90s. We like to point out the anomalies like Malone or shaq but most nba players back then looked more like Reggie Miller. Allowing bully ball would probably benefit modern nba players more.
That’s being said, the physicality of the 80s and 90s is so overblown. I’ve watched dozens of games so far (45+) and honest I cannot figure out where the shocking violence is. Paint defence was pretty soft considering how many people were in there, the average center had no vertical presence. Hand checking was literally non-existent with most defenders choosing to play defence from 8’ away, and many of the fouls they called were as soft as they are today but even more frequent.
And how I know the narrative is an agenda push is that literally no one talks about the 2000s, the era with the most oppressive and tactically physical defense in nba history. That’s the era I know many modern and past nba players would struggle in. But nah It’s always the 80s and 90s. Almost like they’re trynna lift up a specific player and put down another 👀

It's kinda fun to watch the defensive and offensive scheme of each teams and you'll see how much effort they do in defense but the players are just too good and continues to evolve into an elite scorers + the rules heavily favors the offense, heck even a bench players or deep in the bench can basically put 40 or 50 in no time.
The rules should be reconsider to balance things out, offense are getting out of hand

hey coach, something thats been bugging me for a while. at 9:41 you highlight blitzing/trapping the PNR as the heat tried to slow down the nuggets. why was/is this a strategy that teams turn to vs teams with bigs that can pass? jokic of course fits that bill. the most textbook (from my understanding) to beat a blitz is to quickly have the handler pass to the rolling big in the middle of the court on the short roll, and ask the big to extend the play with his passing. is blitzing murray/jokic not playing right into denvers strengths by having 2 defenders out of the play and allowing jokic the ball in his hands with momentum downhill? ofc, theres no right way to guard this action, which is why the nuggets were so lethal but to me this seems very suboptimal. what am i missing about why the heat coaching staff made this decision? thanks, love the vids as always!
This is a bad matchup not even due to the passing threat joker has it’s because he’s so much stronger than anyone on that team if bam guards him he’s just gonna headhunt all night because he’s so much stronger and his touch is unmatched at the rim and if bam comes up and gets switched onto Murray it’s a mismatch for joker and if he stays home Jamal has the range to shoot from out there it’s a lose lose for the defense so you want to force the 2 instead of leaving a shooter open behind the arc

idk, ive been watching basketball for almost 15 years now and its disappointing how commentators who should essentially be basketball experts rarely seem to understand how or why a player got open. They just shrug their shoulders and say bad defense without seeing the 4d chess playing out in front of them. Their words shape public perception and i think its a big reason why there's the sentiment that there's no defense in the modern nba.
It triggers me when people say there is no defense today.. the fact is it’s harder than ever to defend cuz of how unpredictable and versatile the offenses are.. back in the day u had fat asses sitting behind the free throw line the entire game and yet that’s called “incredibly physical defense” give me a fucking break.. if u have any athletic experience or iq u can see how tough it is right now to be a good defender.
It is called situational defense used with
quick thinking and quick acting. Before a player can get set to box out in the paint now the person he wants to guard and box out has made a swishing net 3 pointer and on his way down the court!
This is just how quick and fast these tall players are like Tatum and Jalen Brown and the Nuggets! Nothing is going to win against these guys but about 50 -3s per game , no turnovers, no fouls,fast ball handling, defensive dribbling, and no missing free throws! This is new era NBA basketball!
This young playets come from high tech computerized no sweat thinking! They have already planned how they are going tovkeep theirxgeneration fanschappy, playcin the international NBA pain free and injury free, and retire to enjoy their famies andclivescpost NBA!

Modern nba seems like it's a mix of nfl too. Old skool seems to be more on 1 on 1, imma beat you style but modern is like, "oh, you gonna do this play? I'm gonna do this counter" then they'll expect the counter on top of the counter. Then when they're playing one on one, they'll have to keep all these in mind. No wonder they're stressed.

Great breakdown. Just wanted to comment while there were good principles in the 80s & 90s…physicality was never & will never be equivalent to good defense. You can act as if they made changes to help the offense…or you could understand that they only made changes to things that were clearly illegal.

The fly-by close out is a bad idea in my opinion. It's too easy to predict and most offensive players will just pump fake or side step to get an open three.

Defense tactics of the 80s and 90s are not as effective against combined fast paced, great ball handling, defensive dribbling, spaced out ( spread 5 out), and 3 point shooting against these 6.9 ft- 7.0 ft whippersnappers of the 21st century.
It makes it hard to use defensive methods of the 80s and 90s against them without sustaining severe injuries and being put out of the game for bullying and stepping on players' chest!

Basketball is in the entertainment business and fans come to be wholesomely entertained and not by tall guys trying to kill each other in the paint and at the basket. This is what kick boxing, martial arts, and ice hockey are all about!
The “no defense” argument is so funny because if you have ONE offensive liability…you’re going to be exploited to high hell. Look at how a guy like Russell Westbrook is guarded. Go back 20 years and you can find multiple non-shooting guards and wings on a team. And not just any team, but elite squads.

@@peltimies2469 Yes, but even that defense was far better than it is today. Everyone is a traffic cone, and when they aren't then the offense just sets a moving screen every time. Every team copied the Warriors and their moving screen offense. So maybe the defense is bad and everyone is a cone because they know they will get illegal screened anyway. Hard to tell. I think they are just lazy cones, but the illegal screening is pretty much every play in the NBA now.

Dude, stop. If both team are scoring over 100 points, 3 point attempts are out of 50 and getting fouled because of soft touches, I'm sorry... Today's defense isn't "defense". It's a grown-up version of "I Dare You" on the court and it's stupid. Players who missed their shots are usually off in moments, double / triple teamed and forcing shots. This is the easiest era of scoring a basketball and 2nd fastest pace in NBA History. Please... People aren't asking defense to be like the Bad Boys Pistons and throwing fists. We want to see difficulty for scorers and shooters to score their points. The physical nature of defense is still needed in the game. Fundamentally... Today's defense is also lacking on that department despite these current / new gen players are more "skilled, faster and stronger" than older gen players. Anyway... Today's defense doesn't even have to do defense from the 80s and 90s. Late 90s to mid-late 2000s defense would be great.
Defenses have to adapt to offenses and the offenses of today are so much different than the late 90’s-mid 00’s.
Back then it was common to have 2 or 3 non-shooters you could help off of in the paint. Today you typically see 1 non-shooter and 2 at most (and even then one of those non-shooters can have a unique skill like Draymond’s playmaking).
When you have so much more space to cover, you have to adapt with better close outs and taking away extra passes to stagnate offense. You have to close out to the shooters hand on the side to avoid landing space violations. Most of all you still need to prevent open layups and high value 3’s, meaning you’ll live with guys living in that 12-19 ft area with a slight contest.
These offensive players are too good to defend like it’s 2002, and frankly defense is more skilled today than it was then because it’s much more 1 on 1 and playing in space that someone in 2002 would not have to play in.

By avoiding the offensive player and staying out of their way. In 2030 NBA will apply technical fouls to dwfensive players who look at offensive players during games.
