Exactly. Its a repair to make pass inspection and not look like a total POS. These keyboard warriors never have had a blister and are in debt. Or our in the trade and missing the point. Preach sir
I used spray foam to fill rusted tube steel on both a grill and a ladder rack and it's effectively prevented rust from returning for nearly 10 years now. Super quick and only $5, can't beat it.
Finally someone who gets it! A focus with 200k will never ever ever have collector value. I just want it to look good from across the street, any proper repair will cost more than the car is worth. The common commenter whose knowledge is internet based seems to believe that every single car needs resto quality repairs as if each and every one were a priceless museum piece. I just want not to feel like a poverty stricken asshole every time I drive my beater to work.
@@charredskeleton honestly though, my argument for fixing metal with metal is maintaining structure. If you don't care how pretty it is, then some sloppy welds and extra grinding isn't a big deal when you throw some rattle can paint over it and it'll be stouter. I know most people either don't have a welder or have a friend with a welder, but if you are in a position to start, this kind of stuff would be great practice. That's my plan this summer at least on my old work truck. Same thing, not worth pro work but it runs good enough that I will tinker with some fixes myself.
@@717UT trucks often have fairly flat square rockers, this lends its self well to welding in some square tube and finishing with bed liner. From across the street they’d look like rock sliders, and honestly would take less time then most filler jobs. Even the cheapest square tube is WAY thicker than any body metal. The only thing better than a repair is an upgrade!
Another great way to use this trick is, like he said, use it to support long hair fiberglass, and instead of rocker guard or rubber undercoating, Duplicolor makes an aerosol (spray paint can) truck bed liner. I actually did exactly that and used the bed liner on an entire Jeep Wrangler, inside and out, and it lasted 15 years before I decided to sand it down and redo it all by welding in new metal and repainting it with actual paint.
The can you have is actually asphalt based and not rubber. You can get the rubberized based spray too. It's the same as the paint on you have but just spray. You can also tell by the smell of it. Nasty crap. Haha. One more thing. They make a waterproof foam that is coincidentally black like the rocker guard. Just one more protective step to take. Great tutorial. I've done this to my 4Runner before. Works like a charm.
I suggest using truck bed liner, that stuff is tough as nails and even bulletproof from 22 caliber rounds, its rust proof and lasts a looooong time. I sanded my hitch down about 5 years ago and sprayed it with truck bed liner and it looks just as good today as it did when I did it.
This is a really good trick. But if you want to go the extra mile, spray on a quick coat of foam glue. It will stop the rocker guard from eating the foam... I use the spray foam and sand it to look nice, spray the glue and let jt dry, then i smear it with glazing or spot putty and sand it perfectly, can then be painted properly with what ever you want and makes it mutch more ridgid... Bedliner spray works good too, it will eat the foam and leave a hard fillable surface that you can paint again.
Planning to do this to a car with horrible rocker rust. Minnesota car... got it from the auction with road salt embedded in the layers of rust, nice, right? Gonna be doing a foam+fiber glass+bondo combo. Rust reformer and undercoating and all.
Braden Nielsen depending on your plans for it I'd recommend just cutting off the rockers and welding new ones in. I had two made for my Toyota Matrix and a friend zipped them on, they look and preform like new! And no more fighting with rust. I had been using foam and black paint for the past year to keep it looking better than it was. But ended up going with new metal
I almost went ahead and bought my own welder to spot weld rockers in or something and everyone was like "nooo if you buy a welder get a more expensive one!!! You'll need a teacher too.." But yeah lmao, I know a few welders but they've all moved away or went to college and aren't around anymore. I might have to resort to finding a backyard welder that would help me for cheap.
Skip the foam and take wax paper and use a black marker to outline the hole and make it a extra half an inch or an inch bigger than hole and use short strand fiberglass and press the plastic paper on then smooth out with palm of hand and pull out the ends of the wax paper and keeep it smooth.. wait a minute or two and pull off wax paper. the repair is hard as a rock. Put a second layer on without wax paper and sand down smoothly.. Then drill some quarter inch weep holes.. Quick and painless...
Treat cavities with fluid film black. Wipe off excess. Fill cavity with foam. Carve ledges into foam. A thin coat of Bondo. Use Bondo / primer product over Bondo. Paint and clear coat spray can. Did this for my 95 Miata which I don't drive in rain anymore. Just had to outlast me. Not show condition, but still a looker and great driver
Goodness that would never pass in Nova Scotia. In the same breath there is an older gentilman in town who uses 4x8's for rocker panels .. no idea where he gets his car inspected.. a mill I guess
I did this 15 years ago in my Jeep before I fiberglassed (Bondo). The expanding foam will rot and also retain water/salt underneath (it doesn't absorb it but it will hold it instead of it running off) and speed up rust.
Did you heavily coat the inside rocker with a rust inhibitor and soak it with oil before installing the spray foam? I'm just curious? That may be a key step in the process. Just learning. Thinking about doing this to my 18 yr old pickup until I can do the rockers right, 2 years or so. Thanks for your input.
It would be better if you sanded it to bare metal on that wheel well. Other than that great job! I need to do this to my ‘96 explorer. Thanks for the vid
Good job. How about slowing down a few more hours and working on carefully removing all of the rust so that when you coat the rocker panel with the asphalt and the other stuff, it will probably last longer than you think. I have done quick repairs that lasted longer then I thought it would lasted and I felt badly when the car or truck actually lasted longer but looked rather nasty because I thought the vehicle would not last long. I was wrong, and did a few jobs over because it looked sloppy and messy. Slow down bud. Do it right. You will thank yourself for it.
I gotta get my Dodge 2500s rockers replaced. The driver side is worse. This stuff won't work sadly, I don't think so at least. They're pretty awful I should use this method for my bed panel on the driver side though, that's the most expensive body part on it. Considering the gas insert is on that side.
foam is a Really bad idea, it traps moisture next to the inside on the panel and will cause it to rust out again Fast. yep, you got it! The key is that fumes don't get into the cabin. this is a full frame vehicle, it doesn't rely on the rocker panels for any sort of strength. so its an easy fix for this vehicle and its cheap.
You can do this on vehicles that got chassis, but in jew vehicles without chassis the seal also offers stiffness to the car. Using this method in new cars without chassis is actually dangerous. For sure you know already, is just for some people looking they may not know.

I would have at least ran some fiberglass patch over the holes. The foam would give you good form support for the patch while it dried.
thats an extra step and more expense yes.

That stuff works like a sponge it keeps the water in rusting the panels out even faster. Especially salt brine in the Northeast.
Sometimes looking good is better than being good... was this to pass inspection ?
No. But as it was not structural, it would have been totally legal.
