not necessarily, if from icloud then ofc but not if its from a backup drive. also you can use a bootable installer of the latest mac os (a usb) that way you wouldn't require internet for while resetting/Erasing the computer. I found out how to do this by simply searching how and following the instructions really helpful when updating a few macs at once to the latest OS
I am currently running MacOS Mojave on my computer, and am having some crashing issues so I would like to do a factory reset. I would like to reinstall Mojave and not Big Sur; will my Mac automatically try to get a newer operating system, or will it reinstall the last version it had on it?

...one should avoid Reinstall Mac OS, as Apple will 'force' you to install a newer version! (for obvious reasons, this should be avoided too) Most of times you cannot reinstall the OS it came from factory (if it's 2 versions old)! Hence the errors, which I also got :(

there is no “macintosh HD” hard drive showing up, there’s “ST9500325ASG Media” which always fails to erase and “Untitled 1” which is apparently not mounted. help?
on the left side of the disk utilities there is a drop down section on the left top of the window called "view" , from the drop down, select "show all devices" instead of preselected "Show only volumes" then under internal click on the highest drive available usually named a random number word sequence then erase that disk. also make sure that the "format" is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and the scheme is GUID Partition Map and give it a name then erase it should work let me know if there are any other problems :)
