  • I'm gonna be honest, I almost didn't post this one because, admittedly, it sorta creeped me out and I'm not trying to trash anybody's musical taste. That being said, I've got nothing against ‪@RammsteinOfficial‬ or their fans. Simply put, this particular song wasn't for me but I am open to suggestions. Please feel free to drop me a reaction suggestion for their music - I'm not closed off to them.

"Du hast, live from Paris" would be the better choice to discover rammstein.... greetings from Germany

When I started reading the description, I was crestfallen. Then, I gave myself a talking to - reminded myself people have their own take, their own views, their own feelings. So, it's absolutely understandable that you didn't take to this one. Personally, I adore it. The piano, Til's vocal performance is... wow. I think there's just something about the exquisitely precise pronunciation.
Creepy video, for a creepy story for sure.
Honestly, I'd be interested to know how you'd feel about this after a second or... dare I say it... a third viewing. Once the shock value of a first view has worn off.

Fear and nightmares affect children throughout their lives. In some families and institutions in particular, it is used as an “educational tool”. There were 2 versions of the Sandman in Germany EAST and WEST. Teachers in the East questioned children to find out whether they were watching banned Western TV. You need texts and background information for Rammstein. It's so complex and artistic. Not easy stuff.

With the lyrics, this song is even more creepy. There are references to the German children's TV show "Sandmännchen" (little sandman) that told the children that it is now time to go to sleep but before he tells a nice animated story. It started with the first and third line of the Rammstein lyrics "Nun liebe Kinder gebt fein acht, ich hab euch etwas mitgebracht." (Now dear children pay good attention, I have brought you something ...) Of course those stories were not scary.
This was a rather untypical Rammstein song.
If you want to hear and see more typical Rammstein songs, I have a "few" suggestions.
If you want to see their (incredible) live performances I would suggest
Rammlied (live from Madison Square Garden)
    Du hast (live from Paris)
Engel (live from Madison Square Garden)
Sonne (live at Rock im Park 2017)
Links 2 3 4 (live from Madison Square Garden)
Ich will (live from Hurricane Festival 2016)
Ich tu dir weh (live from Madison Square Garden) (don't take the lyrics too serious)
Sehnsucht (live in Nimes, France, 2005 Volkerball tour)
Feuer Frei! (live from Madison Square Garden)
Benzin (live from Madison Square Garden)
Mein Teil (live at Hurricane Festival 2013)
Wollt Ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen (live from Paris)
Frühling in Paris (live from Paris)
Los (live from Völkerball, Nimes, 2005)
    Amazing official videos
Sonne (Sun) heavy, screwed up fairy-tale
Links 2 3 4 (left) partly heavy march
Ich will (I want) heavy, simple, way to celebrity
Spring! (Jump!) (fan-made animated version with english subtitles) slow, partly heavy, very dark sarcasm!
Radio (Radio) catchy song (with serious background)
Keine Lust (not in the mood) heavy, funny, slidely sad
Mein Herz brennt (My heart burns) (official video, whole band) scary, nightmarish, very special
Amerika (America) catchy, not a love song
Mein Land (My land), sounds & looks like easy living (unless you look at the slightly developing of the lyrics)
Ohne Dich (without you) melancholic, Till singing softly
    Amour (love (French)) lyric video
Newest official videos from their last album "Zeit" in sequence of the tracks on the album:
Zeit (Time) slow, dark, melancholic, emotional
Zick Zack (Snip Snap) catchy song, sarcastic, funny
Angst (Fear) very Rammstein, scary, credits at the end are helpful to understand the message
Dicke Titten (Big Boobs) heavy (most of the time), catchy, funny, credits are funny too (my view)
Adieu (Goodbye) dark, sometimes heavy, emotional
Last but not least the great (but not nice) video "Deutschland" which has a lot of references to (mostly unpleasent) parts of German history. Video, lyrics, and sound are great (my view) and work very well together. To get less confused, watch the version with English subtitles from "educated marine".
I wish you to enjoy your Rammstein journey.

the stories of 'The Sandman' are very old and spread over many countries and cultures .
one version of it was written down by the grimm brothers and much like most the other fairy tales, like snow white or goldielocks, they have been 'cleaned up' for our modern time... the original stories are much darker than the disney movies.
this is a dark rendition of a version of the sandman
as usual with rammstein, the lyrics can be interpreted multiple ways.

There is a sandman from german literature too, older and completely different from the kids character... written by E.T.A Hoffmann if i remember correctly. That one is nightmare fuel. But i believe from the shooting location and the pictures of the official music video that there is a historical layer of real child abuse in an german 19th centurys orphanage that is told by this song too, without mentioning details in the lyrics. There are often many ways to interpret their songs, the sandman is only a part of this song.

The educatedmarine and the Bucksttabu channel has videos with English subtitles.
At Rammstein Songs, English subtitles are important.

Nun liebe Kinder, gebt fein Acht' = Now dear children, pay attention........'Ich bind die Stimme aus dem Kissen' = I am the voice from the pillow'..........Till portrays the "Sandman", who has the power to deliver children from the monsters in their nightmares OR allow their terror to continue until the 'bright light shines from Heaven' in the morning ( ein heller Schein am Firmament ).....while terrifying, the Sandman actually cares for children, which explains the sadness and tears while he sings......and why his smile is so painful.......'Mein herz brennt' = my heart burns..........

Hey you heard of "the brothers grimm?" Most of the old fairly tales we heard growing up are stories from these two german brothers only their original versions are all tragic, creepy or strait up horrific. The stories were changed in order to be more suitable for american audiances.. or atleast somthing like that.😊😊

Omg, you have some beautiful treasures that you have not discovered yet.
Btw. You should practice how to say RAMMSTEIN.
I will teach you… say HAMMER but exchange H to r and skip the last letter. RAMM with a strong rolling “R”.
    ST as STone.
    EI as Ice
    N
RAMM ST EI N! Then you put a Hard german accent when you say it out loud.

If you're looking to expand into German bands but not be creeped out, check out anything by Electric Callboy. They have been around for more than a decade but really refined their sound with the newer singer who joined right before the pandemic, and they have released an EP and an LP since then, and you can use literally any of the tracks from those, and more specifically the official music videos, to serve as a great palate cleanser if you find yourself in the Rammstein doldrums. Honestly, it is better to go in blind and not look up too much about them, imo. You can start chronologically in terms of releases, so Hypa Hypa first, then maybe We've Got The Moves, then Pump It, then Spaceman.... But they also just released the video for their own cover of Every Time We Touch, which they wrote for the LP but decided it didn't fit, and that is also amazing. So you can start anywhere, really.

This has nothing to do with Rammstein, but I ABSOLUTELY feel that you will lose your mind if you watch 900 Days. Ren just recommended it to all his fans.
It’s FREAKING AMAZING and totally your style of music/vocals

If you want something more cheerful, try Seeed, Peter Fox, Die Ärzte, Alligatoah or maybe, Sondaschule. The following applies to all: please provide a translation. German music is often very focused on good lyrics. You should have already noticed that with AnnenMayKantereit.

I am glad that this isn't your cup of tea. I don't like their music and I never will, even when I need to say that this video wasn't as awful as others of them. In Germany the sandman brings the sleep. The one for the kids is definitely a lot nicer...
