Your translation - including the reference to the "Sandmännchen" (=sandman?) - is very good (as well as the one to "Du hast"). The lyrical and metaphoric texts of Rammstein sometimes seem to be hard to interpret even for some German native speakers. So don't let you confuse by some weird comments. 😀

as you mentioned, there is reference to the modern sandmann basically every german kid grows up with, but especially the more horror parts are inspired by the sandmann of E.T.A. Hoffmann from 1815 who is a monster that steals the eyes sleeping children to feed them to its own offspring (while I was aware of the reference to Hoffmanns Sandmann, the actual monster part, in all honesty, I just now checked on wikipedia, as well as the publication date, to not just name drop him). the premise of that story seems as creepy as this song, so they captured that reallly well :D

    • @NormanTheDormantDoormat
      @NormanTheDormantDoormat Год назад +4

Just fyi since you mentioned people commenting on have/hate hast/hasst:
The double meaning is so obvious to anyone who actually speaks german, that there is a video on youtube (something like "kinder reagieren auf rammstein" or similar) that show actual little german children reacting to du hast and other songs and they instantly get it and comment on it.
So yeah, if someone insists on only "it means have since there is no double s", they are either really bad at german or simply dumbasses. Especially considering how many other rammstein songs are also full of wordplays and double meanings.

It is accepted that the double meaning of 'Du Hast' is an integral part of the song. If people have critcised you for pointing this out, then they need to read a little more about Rammstein. Till Lindemann (lead singer and lyricist) is also a published poet and he refuses to ever explain his words saying that it is up to each person to take what they will from a song or poem. The band's videos tell a story yes, but that is the one they chose - the listener/reader may find another narrative more close to their own life experience, in the example of the song 'Sonne' Rammstein had to come up with something that was entirely unrelated to the reason the song was written (it was written as entrance music for a boxer), the video is great, but it's an entirely imposed concept which happens to work very well at telling it's own story. An exception would probably be 'Deutschland' which is I would say, an integrated experience. Along with others that have commented, I cannot recommend highly enough the piano version of this song - it is truly beautiful - in a Bertolt Brecht,/Kurt Weill kind of way. Till is terrifying LOL! For a truly scary experience, perhaps my favourite Rammstein song 'Weiner Blut' is here (with translation and background story on the video) It's a live performance with Till Lindemann showing his character acting ability perfectly. ruclips.net/video/a82IBbhTWOg/видео.html

The song's lyrics involve a narrator describing the terrors of nightmares. The opening line of the song's intro and chorus ("Now, dear children, pay attention. I have brought something for you") is taken from the German children's TV Show "Mr Sandman", which provided children with a "nice" bedtime story. The song's narrator appears as a much more darker version of this character.
In this video, the character of the Sandman is played by Melanie Gaydos a famous model. Melanie Gaydos has suffered from a rare genetic defect since she was born: Her head is bald, her teeth and nails are malformed. She first appears to a sleeping Richard Kruspe, triggering nightmares and sending him into a state of agony. Meanwhile, Till terrorizes the complex of Beelitz-Heilstätten (military hospital of the Imperial German Army and Adolf Hitler recuperated there after being wounded in the first world war), which acts as an orphanage. He kidnaps the orphans and places them in a cage located in the main bathroom. A female warden attempts to defend the children with a shotgun, but Till overpowers her. The warden appears in the video both young (Viktorija Bojarskaja) and old (Anna von Rüden), while Till remains the same age, indicating immortality and paranormal abilities.
While guarding the orphans, Till takes a grotesque, insect-like form with an elongated head and fingers. The children are then used in various examinations and surgeries with the rest of the band playing the doctors. The female warden is also seen assisting them in her younger form. One of the surgeries sees a child's tears extracted through a syringe, which is then vaginally injected by the Sandman. The Sandman is also subject to examinations by the doctors, as Paul H. Landers is seen giving her a gynecological examination.
She later walks in a dress shielding two small children, possibly indicating that the tears are involved in a form of In vitro fertilisation. While Till is away from the main bathroom, the children (portrayed by the rest of the band as disheveled adults) escape from their cage and the orphanage. This causes Till to tear out and consume his own heart while the Heilstätten is engulfed in an inferno. The video ends with the liberated walking away from the building, while the chorus of the piano version plays in the background, signalling the video of the piano version as an afterword. (Wikipedia)
The song "my heart burns" is the film score for "Lilja 4-ever". A film about child prostitution. That's why you could interpret the text based on this film. In the film, girls from Russia lured to Sweden in the hope of a better life, in which a young and attractive man promises her heaven there: "Dear children, take care, I am the voice from the pillow" Then the sentence "Tore it out of my chest, I can imagine that she died inside every time she was raped. Since the rapes happen under cover of the night, this motif comes up frequently in the song. They steal your hot little tears, The film is a nightmare and it leaves a feeling of emptiness and powerlessness ...

I am as much of a classical music fan, as I am a metal head, and I usually don't like orchestral elements added to metal music. It's quite often an attempt to artificially add air of sophistication, rather than contribute to the music itself. This song is a clear exception. They manage to make it minimal, and contextual enough so that it feels like it belongs in the song. As before, I appreciate the analysis you provided. It's nice to get to see the song from a different perspective than my own.

Lyric-wise the song for me is about nightmares and fears (not only) of children and transports those feelings "very well". The video adds some aspects that I don't recognize in the lyrics, e.g. scenes that can be interpreted as child abuse which happened in a big scale in children's recreation facilities in the 1960s in West Germany. As the members of Rammstein grew up Eastern Germany, I'm not sure whether these pictures have the same meaning for the band.
If you want to see Tills heart burn literally - well not really his heart - you may take a look at a live version of this song. I don't think it would be worth a reaction video, but maybe you'll like to see it.
Rammstein videos that might be interesting for you also from your professional perspective as a mental health coach:
Ich will (I want) heavy, simple, way to celebrity
Spring! (Jump!) (fan-made animated version with english subtitles) slow, partly heavy, very dark sarcasm!
Radio (Radio) catchy song (with serious background)
Keine Lust (not in the mood) heavy, funny, slidely sad
All official videos from their last album "Zeit" in sequence of the tracks on the album (beside the one you already listened to):
Zick Zack (Snip Snap) catchy song, sarcastic, funny
Angst (Fear) very Rammstein, scary, credits at the end are helpful to understand the message
Dicke Titten (Big Boobs) heavy (most of the time), catchy, funny, credits are funny too (my view)
Adieu (Goodbye) dark, sometimes heavy, emotional
Last but not least the great (but not nice) video "Deutschland" which has a lot of references to (mostly unpleasent) parts of German history. Video, lyrics, and sound are great (my view) and work very well together.

They are also an experimental folk band where its members are made up from Norway, Germany, and Denmark. Their music is based on texts and runic inscriptions from Germanic peoples of the Iron Age, and Viking Age. And the word Heilung translates to Healing.
    Thank you.

i know im late to thi8s game but as a german i just want to say if germans correct you or mention something isnt tight pronounced etc, it isnt meant to NOT being nice. It means they want to help because they care, sure there are morons around but germans known as direct and honest this is the way of being nice. Though its up to you to like it or not and keep in mind every german knows you are not talking in your mothers tongue and knows you are for sure better talking german than they (and me) talking dutch eg.
Maybe take it this way if its to understand what i wanted to say :D greetings from germany

Anyone who doesnt get that Rammstein is all about double entendre, doesn't really get the band and is just focused on literal translastion and interpretation. A bit miopic.
